SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Text Analysis\nJuly 21-24\, 2025\n10:00am-11:30am EDT (M-Th)\nLive Online via Zoom\n\nIn this two-week course\, students will learn a variety of natural language processing methods for analyzing and extracting meaning from text data. The course will start with an introduction to text data\, including text preprocessing and exploratory methods. The topics that follow will include machine learning models used for topic modeling\, clustering\, classification\, sentiment analysis\, and word embeddings. Students will also be introduced to web scraping. Considerations to both long and short texts of various subject matter. Class examples will be demonstrated primarily in R. This course assumes a bachelors-level background in Statistics or related field and knowledge of R or Python\; no prior knowledge of text analysis is assumed.\n\nRobyn Ferg is a senior statistician at Westat. Her doctoral and postdoctoral research focused on developing methods for extracting insights from social media data. She has taught graduate and short courses at the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (University of Maryland) and given talks on text analysis at the Census Bureau\, University of Maryland\, University of Michigan\, Michigan State University\, and several national and international conferences. She has published original research on this topic in several peer reviewed journals. She has a PhD in Statistics from the University of Michigan.\n\nThe Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques provides rigorous and high quality graduate level training in all phases of survey research. The noncredit courses are open to all. The courses are live online via Zoom. Registration and payment are required. Course fees are based on the total number of hours assigned to each course\, the hours are listed on the course description. The 2025 schedule lists additional courses. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Webinar: Aquatic Acoustics: Listening to Fish in the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve
DESCRIPTION:The Hudson River Estuary supports a wide range of fish\, including a number of migratory and endangered species. Advances in marine ecosystem technologies\, which include the use of passive acoustic monitoring\, have enabled the Hudson River Reserve to address critical management challenges including understanding how fish species use the estuary\, monitoring species population dynamics of protected and endangered animals\, and creating engaging communication tools that inspire public stewardship of key fish species. The management of key fish within the estuary is a priority for the Hudson River Reserve\; data deficiencies and critical questions remain for several key species\, particularly related to spatial\, temporal and seasonal patterns of habitat use. To address these needs\, this collaborative research project implemented a passive acoustic monitoring approach that targeted these information gaps within the reserve sites and adjacent estuarine habitats. \n\nIn this webinar\, members of the project team will share findings\, including characterization of a diverse range of soundscapes across latitudinal and salinity gradients along the Hudson River\, and comparisons of sounds from tributary and wetland habitats to those of the main channel of the river. They will also discuss their collaborative approach and how the project has strengthened relationships among regional partners\, students\, and intended users.

DESCRIPTION:Spontaneous roots-based music that makes a connection\n\nWelcome to Adam Ezra Group\, who\, along with nonprofit organization RallySound\, host a free festival every summer that raised $143\,000 for homeless veterans in 2023. During the pandemic\, Adam live-streamed for 500 nights in a row. The group co-produced an album with 163 fans\, and Adam takes a month out of each year to visit the living rooms of his fans around the country.\n\nIf you haven’t connected with Adam Ezra Group yet\, these are just a few examples to help understand how this underground\, Americana songwriter and his bandmates seem to have popped out of nowhere\, establishing a connection with their fans unlike any other\, and are suddenly selling out theaters throughout the Northeast.  \nAdam Ezra will joke with you that while the “nowhere” part might be accurate\, nothing has ever just “popped” for this folk musician\, activist.  Without resources\, connections\, or any kind of clue how the music world works\, Ezra began playing shows over 20 years ago. He played bars\, bookstores\, fields\, and parking lots\, often raising money for causes he cared about\; a practice that grew into his nonprofit organization RallySound.  \n\nSo how did this band operating so far outside the traditional music world come to win New England Music Award’s “Americana Act of the Year” in 2023? What could have happened to inspire John Oates to call Adam and invite him to begin a songwriting friendship that would lead to John producing their upcoming release and co-write\, “Hold Each Other Now”?  What happened to catch the attention of The Wallflowers\, who recently invited AEG to join them on their spring tour\, or SPIN Magazine who recently proclaimed\, “This Independent Underground Folk Band Is Blowing Up Without Selling Out”? \n\nIf you ask Adam\, he’ll tell you: “One person at a time\, over many years and thousands of shows\, decided to turn their heads to listen…  It’s no fairytale\, but it sure makes me proud and humbled when I look out from the stage to watch theaters full of people singing along to our music.”\n\nThese days you’ll find Adam and his bandmates\, Corinna Smith (Fiddle)\, Poche Ponce (Bass)\, and Alex Martin (Percussion)\, constantly out on the road. If you look at their tour schedule now\, you can buy tickets to see them at festivals\, rock venues\, and theaters around the country\, but you will also see their tour continuously peppered with activism and grassroots events\; a testament to an artist who will never forget where he came from\, and whose mission is about much more than music.
