SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: a. Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.b. Students who are not able to write in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) do not need to take the placement test and they will be advised to enroll in Arabic 101.\nWhere can I view my results?a. Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.b. You will not be notified of your score automatically. c. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.  * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:“She is an intoxicating and unmissable cocktail of power and vulnerability.” –The Times\n\nStorm Large: musician\, actor\, playwright\, author\, awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova\, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale\, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day. Storm appeared on the 2021 season of America’s Got Talent.\n\nOn the 10th anniversary of its premiere\, Storm reprised her one-woman autobiographical musical memoir Crazy Enough at La Jolla Music Society and Portland Center Stage in 2019. She has headlined with orchestras around the world\, including the Chicago\, Detroit\, Houston\, National\, Toronto\, BBC\, and RTE Symphonies\; the NY Pops and Philly Pops\; and the Louisville Orchestra\, with which she recorded the 2017 album All In for Decca Gold. Storm continues to tour concert halls across the country with her band Le Bonheur.\n\nStorm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011\, singing four sold-out concerts at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC. \n\nWhat better way to spend a holiday than with Storm Large? DESCRIPTION:Good Story Tour\n\nIt appears to be a trophy at first. Look closer\, and you’ll see the cover of Good Story features Eliza McLamb holding a makeshift award\, hot-glued together from scraps she and her mother salvaged. It is\, of course\, silver — a self-deprecating wink introducing the timbre of McLamb’s sophomore album. These last few years\, McLamb’s been parsing her upbringing\, the songs she wrote about it\, and the whole endeavor of the stories we tell about ourselves. “If you get really good at telling the story of who you are\, you become the story you told instead of the ever-dynamic\, ever-changing person you have to be\,” McLamb says. “I did really well telling the story of who I am\, but I began asking: What’s the point of it?” \n\nAt only 23\, McLamb has already lived multiple lives. In her late teens\, McLamb found success via co-hosting the podcast Binchtopia and sharing songs on TikTok. She soon pulled back from the platform\, feeling it didn’t represent her actual ethos as a songwriter. Instead\, she signed to Royal Mountain and released her 2024 debut Going Through It\, a document of a complex\, traumatic childhood that led to searching phases — dropping out of college during the pandemic in favor of working on Midwest farms\, eventually leaving her North Carolina hometown behind for Los Angeles. It all gave her plenty of stories to tell on Going Through It. And now on Good Story\, she wonders how that process affected her. Yet the homemade trophy of Good Story’s cover is far from a jocular consolation prize alone. It’s a symbol of the layered\, accomplished writing McLamb arrived at as she interrogated everything she thought she was about as an artist.
