SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Survival
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Beyond Survival\, an exhibition of works by incarcerated artists in Michigan presented by PCAP co-founder Janie Paul and the Flint Institute of the Arts. The exhibit opens May 30th and runs through September 14th. \n\nThe pieces span nearly 30 years\, many of them having been featured in our Annual Exhibition.\n\n\"Through drawings\, paintings\, and sculptures made with simple materials\, artists expose the harsh realities of incarceration while imagining life beyond prison. These works reveal a longing for home and family\, joy and beauty\, connections to nature\, flights of the imagination\, and journeys toward freedom—acts of creation made despite and in direct response to carceral conditions.\"

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:In-person Arabic Placement test_August 19\, 2025 (10:00am-1:00pm)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: a. Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.b. Students who are not able to write in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) do not need to take the placement test and they will be advised to enroll in Arabic 101.\nWhere can I view my results?a. Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.b. You will not be notified of your score automatically. c. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.  * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 504\, 511 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 & 102\, combined) AND Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer terms.\nUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to developing the four language skills of formal Arabic (fuSHa). \nIf you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu.\n

SUMMARY:Presentation:Learning Articulated Object Representations for Robotics
DESCRIPTION:Committee Chair: Odest Chadwicke Jenkins\n\nAbstract: \nThis dissertation proposes various techniques for creating articulated object representations in a scalable manner that require little human labeling. These representations are shown to be useful through experiments in articulated object pose and configuration estimation\, as well as performance via comparisons to other methods on common articulated object datasets. We posit that these scalable representations can be used in the future to improve robot manipulation capabilities directly or as augmentations to data-driven techniques. The approach proposed in this work addresses the dimensionality and data scale issues originally described as difficulties in articulated object representation\, which should improve the robotics communities' ability to ingest\, share\, and utilize articulated object data within subsequent research efforts.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Roadway Friction Screening and Measurement with Automated Vehicle Telematics and Control — CCAT Research Review
DESCRIPTION:This project develops an automated roadway friction screening and measurement system using telematics-based cooperative perception and customized AV control. The system offers a low-cost\, automated alternative to traditional friction measurement methods\, enabling frequent\, wide-area monitoring without the need for dedicated instrument calibration.\n\nLeveraging Physics-Enhanced Residual Learning (PERL)\, the AV control module achieves high slip ratios at peak Tire-Road Friction Coefficient (TRFC) values\, improving estimation accuracy. Cooperative perception aggregates telematics data from connected AVs and regular vehicles (RVs)\, mitigating individual measurement errors and expanding coverage across diverse road conditions. A network smart routing strategy is proposed to optimize AV deployment for friction sensing\, utilizing real-time traffic and environmental data without incurring extra resource costs. Field validation will be conducted at the Level-3 CAV testbed at the University of Wisconsin–Madison\, using vehicles equipped with FHWA CDA CARMA capabilities.\n\nMore on this research: https://myumi.ch/XGxQX\n---\nAbout the speakers:\nDr. Xiaopeng (Shaw) Li is currently a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and an affiliate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). He served as the director of National Institute for Congestion Reduction (NICR) before. He is a recipient of a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award. He has published over 110 peer-reviewed journal papers. He has served as the PI or a co-PI for a number of federal\, state\, and industry grants\, with a total budget of around $30 million. His major research interests include automation\, connectivity\, and sensing in transportation and related systems. He received a B.S. degree (2006) in civil engineering with a minor in computer engineering from Tsinghua University\, China\, an M.S. degree (2007)\, and a Ph.D. (2011) degree in civil engineering along with an M.S. degree (2010) in applied mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urban- Champaign\, USA.\n\nDr. Heye Huang is a Research Associate with the Connected & Autonomous Transportation Systems Lab\, University of Wisconsin–Madison. SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Teacher Pathways for Non-Traditional Teachers: Navigating the Alternate Route(s)
DESCRIPTION:Join the NYU Teacher Residency for a live event this month where we help non-education majors understand the basics of how to become a well-trained\, licensed K-12 teacher without necessarily having studied education before. Join me\, our Resident Recruitment Manager\, as we take a look at topics relevant to folks considering a career in teaching who are struggling to know where to begin.   Questions we’ll address include:    What’s the difference between elementary and secondary education\, both professionally and practically?   How can I determine what my (non-education) undergraduate degree will permit me to teach in the places I’d like to live?     How can I gain the experience I’d need to understand if teaching is a good path for me\, ideally in a way that would be appealing to education programs or K-12 schools?     I’ll be facilitating the discussion as a non-traditional teacher with personal experience navigating the professional and logistical challenges of taking the alternate route to teaching. Thegoal of this session is to help provide context in an open discussion setting\, which means that we’ll follow an outline of topics but leave plenty of room for impromptu questions and discussion.     Ihope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Performance:Selwyn Birchwood
DESCRIPTION:\"A remarkable\, contemporary bluesman...a powerhouse young guitarist and soulful vocalist” –Rolling Stone\n\nAlthough award-winning Florida musician Selwyn Birchwood is firmly rooted in the tradition\, the young guitarist\, lap steel player\, songwriter and vocalist sets a course for the future of the blues with his visionary\, original music. Birchwood\, whose band features the pulsating interplay of his blistering guitar with Regi Oliver's driving baritone sax\, deploys a singular sound and style all his own. He calls it \"Electric Swamp Funkin' Blues\,\" an intoxicating mix of deep blues\, blistering\, psychedelic-tinged rock\, booty-shaking funk and sweet Southern soul\, played and sung with the fire-and-brimstone fervor of a revival tent preacher with a hellhound on his trail. Tastemaker Americana music magazine No Depression says\, \"Selwyn Birchwood reaches back in the blues tradition to launch something out of this world.\"\n\nOn his new release\, Exorcist (his fourth for Alligator and sixth overall)\, Birchwood delivers the most far-reaching\, musically adventurous album of his career. \n\nLive\, Birchwood is a force of nature. His ability to win over an audience--any audience--is proven night after night on the bandstand. With his warm\, magnetic personality\, Birchwood is as down-to-earth as his music is thought-provoking and electrifying. With his band feeding off his energy\, the 6'3\" musician roams the stage barefoot\, ripping out memorable guitar licks with ease\, his soulful\, rocks-and-gravel vocals firing up his fans. When he sits down to play his lap steel\, he takes the crowd to a whole other level\, with the music exorcising any bad times and troubles.

SUMMARY:Performance:Cris Williamson
DESCRIPTION:A celebration in honor of The Changer and The Changed\n\nCris Williamson returns to the Ark for a celebration and special 50th Anniversary solo presentation of the beloved Changer and the Changed\, the album that became the soundtrack of a movement. \n\n\"The Changer” as it is often called\, is a seminal album in feminist music history. Released in 1975 on Olivia Records\, an all-women recording company\, the album is considered a cornerstone of women's music. NPR's Music Critic Ann Powers has praised the album as a work that explores themes of loss\, grief\, and renewal\, suggesting it's a portal that allows listeners to travel through time and return refreshed. The album's impact is significant\, with Powers and others highlighting its enduring influence on the folk\, pop\, and feminist music movements. \n \n\"Even though it’s over 50 years old\, The Changer and the Changed seems to still hold water\, and continue to refresh those who find it. I’m honored to claim it\, and thrilled to perform it. What a joy to play these old songs. It feels new every time!” - Cris\n\nCome join Cris in celebration\, and bring your memories.
