SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Survival
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Beyond Survival\, an exhibition of works by incarcerated artists in Michigan presented by PCAP co-founder Janie Paul and the Flint Institute of the Arts. The exhibit opens May 30th and runs through September 14th. \n\nThe pieces span nearly 30 years\, many of them having been featured in our Annual Exhibition.\n\n\"Through drawings\, paintings\, and sculptures made with simple materials\, artists expose the harsh realities of incarceration while imagining life beyond prison. These works reveal a longing for home and family\, joy and beauty\, connections to nature\, flights of the imagination\, and journeys toward freedom—acts of creation made despite and in direct response to carceral conditions.\"

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Student Dissertation Defense - Divergence in Gene Expression Plasticity
DESCRIPTION:Defense Preview:\nOrganisms respond to shifts in their environment by changing the abundance of different mRNA transcripts in their cells\, a process called \"gene expression plasticity\". We understand that gene expression plasticity itself can evolve---the same environmental shift can cause different patterns of gene expression plasticity in different genetic backgrounds. We don't\, however\, know much about how gene expression plasticity tends to evolve. Is divergence in gene expression plasticity common between closely related species? Are certain genes more or less likely to experience evolutionary changes to their patterns of expression plasticity? In this dissertation defense\, I characterize gene expression plasticity divergence in two yeast species: the baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and one of its closest related species\, Saccharomyces paradoxus. To describe the extent of gene expression plasticity divergence\, I cluster gene expression responses to six different environments. I find that each of the six environments identifies a unique set of at least 100 genes that have diverged in gene expression plasticity. Interestingly\, the genes most likely to experience this expression plasticity divergence are the genes with the fewest connections in the regulatory network. My work demonstrates that different environments can reveal hidden dimensions of molecular evolution\, and that network connectivity is associated with more robust expression plasticity over evolutionary time.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899 - Jingwen Hu\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Hu is a Professor at IOE and a Research Professor at UMTRI. His research interests primarily focus on injury biomechanics and traffic injury prevention by a multidisciplinary approach using a combination of experimental\, numerical\, and epidemiological methods. Dr. Hu is an author of 150+ peer-reviewed journal and conference papers with four Best Paper Awards. His research has been funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration\, the National Science Foundation\, the National Institute of Justice\, the Department of Defense\, and the Auto Industry.\n\nAbstract:\nRecent literature has shown that there is a growing concern of safety disparity in motor-vehicle crashes (MVCs)\, but technological tools for addressing this issue are limited. In particular\, females\, the elderly\, and obese occupants are among the vulnerable populations who are often at increased risk of death and serious injury compared with mid-size young men in MVCs. This presentation will introduce the parametric finite element (FE) human and vehicle modeling work conducted in the past decade\, along with recent machine-learning models and design optimizations. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of a population-based virtual testing framework on improving safety disparity among the diverse population.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Significant Alumni Award Featured Lecture with Laila Poisson\, PhD '09
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Biostatistics is pleased to invite you to join us in honoring Laila Poisson\, PhD '09 at the inaugural Michigan Biostatistics Significant Alumni Award Lecture.A pre-lecture reception will be held beginning at 3:00 p.m. in 1627 SPH I for all attendees of the lecture\, which will begin at 3:30 p.m. in 1690 SPH I and will feature the presentation of the inaugural Significant Alumni Award.SIGN UP FOR MEETINGS WITH DR. POISSON HERE.TITLE: Being in CollaborationABSTRACT: There are many ways to be a biostatistician. Beyond whether you identify as a Bayesian or frequentist - beyond whether your expertise is in time-to-event analysis\, missing data\, or genetics - we each have a role in the broader community of science and research. In this presentation we will explore the role of the biostatistician as a team scientist and collaborative researcher. While examples will be drawn from experiences in an academic medical center\, the principles of communication\, leadership\, statistical expertise\, and domain knowledge apply across settings. Here\, at the beginning of a new academic year\, let’s take a moment to celebrate our unique abilities and the joy of seeing their impacts – big and small – in the world around us.ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dr. Laila Poisson\, PhD\, exemplifies the collaborative nature of biostatistics in addressing issues of significance in public health and medicine using data and science. A 2009 graduate of the Biostatistics PhD program at Michigan\, Dr. Poisson has since become a nationally recognized leader in neuro-oncology research\, data integration\, and biostatistics education. She currently serves as Vice Chair of Biostatistics in the Department of Public Health Sciences and a Senior Scientist in the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center at Henry Ford Health in Detroit. In parallel\, she is a Research Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Michigan State University.Click here to read more about Dr. Poisson and learn more about the Significant Alumni Award.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe metabolic underpinnings of immune cells in various inflamed tissues\, such as the implant microenvironment or the diseased heart\, are poorly understood. For instance\, polylactide (PLA) is the most widely used biopolymer in medicine. Yet\, for decades\, PLA had been thought to activate immune cells by reducing surrounding pH because PLA biodegrades into monomers and oligomers of lactic acid. During my talk\, I will discuss an alternative paradigm underscoring immune cell metabolism (immunometabolism) as the pivotal determinant of the proinflammatory versus pro-regenerative tissue microenvironment with biodegradable and non-biodegradable biomaterial examples. Further related to tissue engineering\, I will present on reversing established cardiac dysfunction and fibrosis in heart failure (following myocardial infarction) via targeted and enzyme-responsive nanomaterials. Finally\, I will unveil my vision to revolutionize therapeutic strategies for the various phenotypes of heart failure by leveraging the metabolic underpinnings of immune and stromal cell populations\, thereby engineering next-generation clinical interventions that shape the future of medicine.
