SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Effects of Heat on Teachers and Their Students
DESCRIPTION:This paper examines how extreme heat during the school year affects teacher effectiveness and student learning\, focusing on how teacher age amplifies these effects. This analysis is based on matched student-teacher administrative data with high-resolution temperature data and uses fixed-effects regressions to estimate the causal impact of heat on test scores and teacher absenteeism. Results show each extreme heat day reduces student test scores for teachers in the oldest 10%\, with nearly zero effect for younger teachers. Older teachers also experience 1.5 times more absences per heat day than younger teachers\, highlighting climate-related disparities in education and underscoring the need for targeted teacher support\, infrastructure investment\, and heat emergency protocols.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Matroids and the integral Hodge conjecture for abelian varieties
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss a proof that the integral Hodge conjecture is false for a very general abelian variety of dimension ≥ 4. Associated to any regular matroid is a degeneration of principally polarized abelian varieties. We introduce a new combinatorial invariant of regular matroids\, which obstructs the algebraicity of the minimal curve class\, on the very general fiber of the associated degeneration. In concert with a result of Voisin\, one deduces (via the intermediate Jacobian) the stable irrationality of a very general cubic threefold. This is joint work with Olivier de Gaay Fortman\, and Stefan Schreieder.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: Large Deviation Principle for the Directed Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The directed landscape is a random directed metric on the plane that arises as the scaling limit of classical metric models in the KPZ universality class. In this talk\, I will discuss a functional large deviation principle for the entire random metric and mention certain interesting features of the underlying rate function. If time permits\, I will also discuss some applications of our results. Based on a joint work with Duncan Dauvergne and Balint Virag.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will present a singular perturbation problem for second-order Hamilton–Jacobi equations\, focusing on the asymptotic behavior of solutions as the perturbation parameter vanishes. The analysis is carried out in the framework of viscosity solutions for equations in the Wasserstein space\, using the perturbed test function method adapted to this infinite-dimensional setting. I will also discuss connections with the homogenization of systems of slow–fast McKean–Vlasov stochastic differential equations.

SUMMARY:Performance:Brain Plasticity Ukelele Collective & Blueshouse
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor’s Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective is a proudly intergenerational group\, sharing instruments\, knowledge\, kindness\, and talent across eras. Instruments you might hear in the music of the collective include not only ukuleles but also guitar\, flute\, percussion\, harmonica\, accordion\, mandolin\, mandola\, bass\, piano\, and melodica. The group is inspired by the idea that music cuts across diverse cognitive capabilities and resources\, including numeracy\, language\, and space perception.\n\nMike Brooks\, veteran blues guitar player/singer/songwriter from the UK has been playing guitar since the age of 10\, and professionally since the age of 16. His musical career and accolades are many and varied\, but include hitting the UK charts in 1979 (#28 on “the New Wave of British Heavy Metal” despite being a blues band)\, getting a cease and desist order from Walt Disney Corp for using a band name too close to that of a cartoon mouse\, opening for bands such as the Yardbirds\, the Animals\, Wishbone Ash and Nine Below Zero\, and playing in some of the most famous venues anywhere such as London’s Marquee\, and\, well\, The Ark! In addition to leading BLUESHOUSE and fronting the Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective\, he also works with Ann Arbor’s youth at the Neutral Zone\, a continuation of a youth music project begun in the UK called Electric896\, which taught disengaged youth how to rock the blues.\n\nCancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor is a local nonprofit affiliate of The International Cancer Support Community (CSC)\, opening our doors in 2007. The Cancer Support Community is the largest and most comprehensive program in the country devoted solely to providing emotional support and education to people with cancer\, their caregivers and children – all free of charge.

SUMMARY:Performance:Mustard's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Music to cure what ails you\n\nMay 1975. It seemed inevitable. Libby Glover\, Michael Hough and David Tamulevich had been informally jamming with each other for 3 months in the Rathskellar of the Old Heidelberg Restaurant in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. The room had grown consistently packed with enthusiastic fans every weekend. They all agreed it was time the trio made it official and chose the name Mustard’s Retreat\, which was a tune David had written. \n\nMustard’s Retreat has always sung the songs they enjoyed and cared about\, regardless of the trends of the music industry and pop culture. They are committed to simply being themselves\, not chasing fame or brass rings\, while delighting in and connecting with their audiences as if they were family. The honesty of what they present onstage and the extensive body of outstanding original songs and recordings all contribute to a fiercely loyal audience that continues to grow. “Music to cure what ails you” was how one reviewer in the 1970s described them\, and that is as true now as it was then. They’ve traveled more than a million miles and performed more than 6\,000 shows\, from pig roasts and pool parties to Lincoln Center Out of Doors\, The Barns at Wolftrap and the Kennedy’s Center’s Millennium Stage.\n\nTheir performances are always joyful and uplifting\, as well as intelligent\, thought provoking and insightful. They’ve recently begun referring to their career and touring as “Defiantly Hopeful.” In part due to their long career\, but more as a statement about what the music has meant to them. “Folk music is\, at its heart\, defiantly hopeful!” Tamulevich says. “We came of age in the 60s\, at the confluence of Pete Seeger\, Peter\, Paul & Mary\, Bob Dylan and the singer/songwriter revolution. We care much more about what we do and stand for and finding that common ground with our audiences\, than fame or money: this is our community of choice\, and we consider ourselves so fortunate to be here.”\n\nNote early start time of 7:30!
