SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Survival
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Beyond Survival\, an exhibition of works by incarcerated artists in Michigan presented by PCAP co-founder Janie Paul and the Flint Institute of the Arts. The exhibit opens May 30th and runs through September 14th. \n\nThe pieces span nearly 30 years\, many of them having been featured in our Annual Exhibition.\n\n\"Through drawings\, paintings\, and sculptures made with simple materials\, artists expose the harsh realities of incarceration while imagining life beyond prison. These works reveal a longing for home and family\, joy and beauty\, connections to nature\, flights of the imagination\, and journeys toward freedom—acts of creation made despite and in direct response to carceral conditions.\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Webinar: A Roadmap for Addressing Marine Debris in the NERRS
DESCRIPTION:Estuaries are an important link in the chain of trash becoming marine debris. Plastic and other anthropogenic marine debris alter aquatic ecosystems\, contaminating waterways and impacting water quality and habitat resilience. Across the NERRS\, marine debris is an issue of concern for reserves and their surrounding communities. A System-wide survey conducted by the Marine Debris workgroup after the 2019 NERRS/NERRA Annual Meeting revealed an overwhelming desire for NERRS staff to work across sectors on the issue of marine debris and develop coordinated long-term monitoring and public messaging to promote understanding\, behavior-change\, and policy actions. To address this need\, this project facilitated four knowledge transfer workshops across reserves and with the greater Debris Community of Practice (DCoP). These workshops elevated and articulated the NERRS’s niche in addressing marine debris and provided a forum to develop a Roadmap that contains resources for Reserves and DCoP members to address marine debris in individual estuaries. \n\nIn this webinar\, the project team will introduce the Roadmap and describe the process of its development\, explore with participants how it might be applied in Reserve and other specific contexts\, and share insights on how the resource and community of practice can support reserves to make a meaningful impact on marine debris and better protect estuaries.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Advancing Healthcare Through AI and Machine Learning Innovations\nAbstract:\nHealthcare constitutes nearly one-fifth of the U.S. economy and approximately 10% of the global economy\, yet it faces profound challenges\, including inequitable access\, an aging population\, and rising per capita costs. These factors underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions. In this talk\, we will present how artificial intelligence\, driven by the urgent needs of healthcare\, is advancing both clinical and technological frontiers. I will share our work on medical image reconstruction\, MRI-based automated diagnosis\, and AI-powered precision medicine solutions. These applications are built on specialized deep learning algorithms\, such as video-based AI and longitudinal imaging reasoning\, with a focus on integrating biological complexities into their design. By bridging engineering principles with clinical applications\, we aim to transform medical diagnostics and treatment while broadening AI's impact across disciplines\, paving the way for more effective and accessible healthcare solutions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy 2025-2026 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:Luke’s Title: Characterizing hot Jupiter atmospheres using Keck/KPIC high-resolution spectroscopy\n\nAbstract: High-resolution cross-correlation spectroscopy (HRCCS) is a technique for characterizing the atmospheres of hot giant exoplanets by treating the system as a spectroscopic binary. Hot Jupiters near conjunction exhibit a rapid change in radial velocity relative to their host star\, which can be used to isolate spectral features associated with the planet from stellar and telluric features. The HRCCS technique can be applied in transmission or emission\, and is the only technique capable of characterizing atmospheres of close-in non-transiting planets. Since HRCCS directly detects planetary spectral features\, this technique can be used to measure atmospheric composition\, particularly the C/O ratio\, and is also sensitive to atmospheric circulation effects via changes to the shapes of planetary spectral lines. Keck/KPIC has obtained HRCCS observations of approximately 20 hot Jupiters in the infrared K band\, and complementary L band observations are ongoing. Initial results of this survey program include the characterization of benchmark hot Jupiters HD 189733 b and HD 209458 b\, measuring the orbital inclination of the non-transiting hot Jupiter HD 143105 b\, and the detection of six ultra-hot Jupiters with strong CO emission features. Ongoing work to combine these data with observations from other optical/infrared high-resolution spectrographs will enable measurement of refractory/volatile ratios for many of these planets. For objects observed at a wide range of orbital phases\, HRCCS is a promising avenue for testing predictions from Global Circulation Models (GCMs) of hot Jupiter atmospheres. \n\nTeresa’s Title: Multi-molecular analysis of turbulent motions during planet formation\n\nAbstract: Turbulence is a key physical process expected to stir the planet-forming material in the early stages of planetary systems and act as an effective viscosity\, aiding the evolution of protoplanetary disks. Even though it is a key phenomena\, expected to have shaped our own Solar System\, detection of turbulent motion has been scarce in the past years. This work presents an observationally motivated methodology that takes advantage of the high spatial and spectral resolution of ALMA observations to measure turbulence through molecular line broadening. By tracing distinct regions of the protoplanetary system through specific molecular tracers\, we are able to resolve vertical variations in turbulent motions\, obtaining the first insights into the physical instabilities that may be driving turbulence in these disks.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Behavioral ecology at the ant-plant-herbivore interface: Ant-induced effects on herbivore decisions
DESCRIPTION:Foliage represents a major zone of biological interaction in terrestrial ecosystems. Therefore\, the capacity to make appropriate decisions during host plant selection is a crucial behavioral trait of insect herbivores. Our research group investigated behavioral decisions by butterflies and bees that exploit ant-visited plants in the Cerrado savanna of Brazil. Observations and experiments were performed under contrasting ecological scenarios: antagonism and mutualism with ants. Field experiments show that detection of ants by these two groups of flying insects can either discourage or promote potential contact with ants on foliage. Interaction trials suggest that behavioral decisions are associated with the risk of ant-induced injury\, or with the benefit of protection via ant mutualists. Visual recognition of aggressive ants represents an unusual case of behavioral adaptation by flying insects associated with the use of plant resources (leaves\, flower rewards) on ant-occupied foliage\, and is particularly relevant in ant-rich Cerrado.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY SEMINAR. Compactness for G-invariant minimal hypersurfaces
DESCRIPTION:Consider the space of embedded minimal hypersurfaces in a closed Riemannian n-manifold\, with the C^k topology. For n=3\, a celebrated work of Choi--Schoen gives natural geometric conditions that determine compact subsets of this space\; notable extensions to n<=7 were given by Sharp and Ambrozio-Carlotto-Sharp. I will discuss a compactness result for minimal hypersurfaces that are invariant under isometric group actions whose orbit space is smooth and 2-dimensional\, which does not require volume or index bounds\, nor restrictions on the ambient dimension n. This talk is based on joint work in progress with Dario Corona\, Fabio Giannoni\, and Paolo Piccione.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Digging Deeper/Kozma Lecture | Current Work at Vindolanda: Archaeological Leather and the Precarious Future of Organic Evidence
DESCRIPTION:Join the Kelsey Museum for our annual Kozma Lecture! This free\, public event will feature a presentation by Dr. Elizabeth M. Greene\, Canada Research Chair in Roman Archaeology at the University of Western Ontario\, followed by a question-and-answer session.\n\nThe Roman site of Vindolanda on the northern frontier of Britain has provided one of the best assemblages of organic material from anywhere in the empire. Over 8\,000 leather finds—including nearly 5\,000 shoes—and countless wood and bone objects have provided a more complete picture of life in the past than is typical of most sites. However\, this invaluable resource is also under threat from environmental shifts\, and Vindolanda is also leading the way on several initiatives to understand how climate change is affecting archaeological remains. This talk will first present current work on archaeological leather and then focus on its role in assessing the impact of climate change over the past five decades.\n\nDr. Greene’s presentation will take place in the Rackham Amphitheatre\, located on the fourth floor of the Rackham Building (915 E. Washington Street\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109).\n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Jobi Riccio
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Morrison\, Colorado - a tourist town in the foothills outside of Denver that’s home to Red Rocks Amphitheater - Jobi Riccio grew up surrounded by music and found inspiration in artists ranging from Sheryl Crow to Joni Mitchell. Sonically\, Jobi’s music exists between worlds\, melding the classic craftsmanship of her songwriting with modern indie-leaning production to forge a lush\, expansive sound that feels traditional and experimental all at once.\n\nShe has received significant acclaim for her songwriting\, including winning the 2019 NewSong Music Competition and the 2019 Lee Villiare Scholarship from her alma mater Berklee College of Music. More recently Jobi was awarded the 2023 Newport Folk Festival John Prine Fellowship\, chosen as a 2024 Luck Reunion Artist On The Rise and was nominated for the Americana Music Association&#39\;s 2024 Americana Honors and Awards in the category of Emerging Artist of the Year.\n\nHer debut album\, Whiplash (out now on Yep Roc)\, has garnered praise from The New York Times\, Billboard\, NPR\, and The Nashville Scene to name a few. “This is the kind of album where you leave knowing an artist better than you ever thought you could in less than 40 minutes\, and learn a thing or two about yourself in the process” Says Marissa R. Moss\, who named Whiplash her number one Country album of 2023 for Stereogum. Not one to be confined into any one mold\, Riccio’s Whiplash introduces influences from a variety of genres\, while still holding space for her love for all decades of country and americana music.
