SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Friday Seminar Series - Ant-fruit/seed interactions in Neotropical ecosystems: Effects on the biology of seeds and seedlings
DESCRIPTION:Although most shrub and tree species in tropical environments are primarily vertebrate-dispersed\, interactions between ants and fallen fleshy diaspores are frequent. Our studies have focused on the services provided by ants to fallen fleshy diaspores of primarily vertebrate-dispersed trees in Brazilian Cerrado savanna and Atlantic rainforest. In this talk\, I report which ant species interact with fallen diaspores\, their contribution to seed removal\, and effects on seedling establishment and growth. Field studies by our group confirm the prevalence of interactions between ants and fallen fleshy diaspores\, revealing potential ant-derived benefits to seeds and seedlings in both biomes. Although seed dispersal distances by ants are shorter compared to birds\, our data show that fine-scale\, ant-induced seed movements may ultimately enhance plant regeneration at early developmental stages in Cerrado and Atlantic rainforest. Current human-induced fragmentation and defaunation of tropical environments suggests that short-distance dispersal by ants may become increasingly important in the dynamics of ecosystems\, since many vertebrate seed dispersers have been locally extirpated or are in decline.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:30th Anniversary of the Joint Ph.D. Program in Psychology and Women's & Gender Studies
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the joint Ph.D. program in Psychology and Women’s and Gender Studies. Starting in 1995\, the joint doctoral program began training students and established itself as the model for interdisciplinary scholarship. The founding of the Psychology/WGS joint program signaled – and continues to lead – in the growth of the field of feminist psychology.\n\nGender and the broader study of inequality has become a crucial site of education and knowledge production. As the national discourse concerning gender\, racism\, and inequality has grown contentious and even dangerous in recent years\, it is more important than ever to note this 30th anniversary milestone of a program that is dedicated to training future generations of feminist psychologists.\n\nThe 30th anniversary celebration will include: a discussion of the program’s founding and development with Dr. Abby Stewart\, a keynote by Dr. Michelle Fine on the crucial role that feminist psychology plays in contemporary scholarship and activism\, and a panel of alumni from the program will speak about their careers and the unique training they received in the UM joint program.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Survival
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Beyond Survival\, an exhibition of works by incarcerated artists in Michigan presented by PCAP co-founder Janie Paul and the Flint Institute of the Arts. The exhibit opens May 30th and runs through September 14th. \n\nThe pieces span nearly 30 years\, many of them having been featured in our Annual Exhibition.\n\n\"Through drawings\, paintings\, and sculptures made with simple materials\, artists expose the harsh realities of incarceration while imagining life beyond prison. These works reveal a longing for home and family\, joy and beauty\, connections to nature\, flights of the imagination\, and journeys toward freedom—acts of creation made despite and in direct response to carceral conditions.\"

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:CSAS Graduate Student Conference | New Directions in South Asia: From Nostalgia to New Politics
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/W6drV\n\nThis conference will bring together graduate students at the University of Michigan from all disciplines\, featuring panelists discussing papers on the theme of “New Directions\,” rethinking key ideas in scholarship pertaining to South Asia. In the last decade\, South Asia has witnessed the contours of democracy change\, the economic center of gravity shift eastwards\, and an unprecedented influx of climate and political refugees. Reflecting on recent global events\, how can we meaningfully situate South Asia in the world?\n \n OPENING REMARKS (10:00 AM – 10:15 AM)\n \n PANEL 1 (10:15 AM – 11:45 AM): Literary Critique in Context\n Aditya Bhattacharya (doctoral student in Asian Languages and Cultures)\, Sarvadamana Bharata in the *Mahābhārata* and the *Abhijñānaśākuntala*: The Puru Prince in the Changing Politics of Legitimacy\n Shreya Dutta (doctoral student in History)\, Navigating the Unfamiliar? Rethinking Babu Satires in Late Nineteenth-Century Bengal\n Gurkirat Singh Sekhon (doctoral student in English and Women's and Gender Studies)\, Is the *Post-* in Postsecularism the *Post-* in Postcritique?\n \n CATERED LUNCH (11:45 AM – 1:00 PM)\n \n PANEL 2 (1:00 PM – 2:30 PM): Networks of Prints and Visual\n Nathan Omprasadham (doctoral student in English Language and Literature)\, The Editor as Nexus: Sri Lankan Literary Networks and the Politics of Patronage in Post-war London\n Srimati Ghosal (doctoral student in Comparative Literature)\, Magazine Manifestoes: The Formation of Third-world Literary Aesthetics through the Magazine Format\n Arighna Gupta (Ph.D. candidate in History)\, Visualizing Rebels and Collectives in Early-colonial Company Paintings\, 1780–1840\n \n COFFEE BREAK 1 (2:30 PM –2:45 PM)\n \n PANEL 3 (2:45 PM – 4:15 PM): Political and Legal Lives of South Asia\n Avina Kohli (doctoral student in Asian Languages and Cultures)\, State Publicity and Pedagogy in Postcolonial India\n Vishesh Chander Guru (doctoral student in Anthropology)\, Troubling Crime: Insanity\, Law\, and Reason in (Post)colonial India\n Saifullah Nasar (Ph.D. candidate in Sociocultural Anthropology)\, title TBA\n \n COFFEE BREAK 2 (4:15 PM – 4:30 PM)\n \n KEYNOTE ADDRESS (4:30 PM – 6:00 PM): Documentation as Political Practice: From Contemporary Nostalgia for the Left to the New Evidentiary Politics in 1970s South India\n \n Five decades ago\, the Andhra Pradesh Radical Students Union launched the Go to Villages Campaign\, in which groups of university students were sent to rural Dalit settlements\, where they were tasked with documenting the conditions of life and labor. In that same decade\, anthropologists and sociologists like Clifford Geertz and Joseph Gusfield fundamentally transformed the social sciences by newly centering attention to writing. This talk asks why Telugu South India similarly saw the emergence of new socio-political writing and documentation practices in the 1970s\, highlighting four examples: the Jana Natya Mandali’s (People’s Theatre Troupe) new documentary song-story compositions\; AP State Harijan Conference reports\; documentation produced by the RSU’s “Go to Villages Campaign”\; and the Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee’s introduction of regular “fact-finding missions.”\n \n Lisa Mitchell is Professor of anthropology & history in the Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of *Hailing the State: Indian Democracy between Elections* (Duke University Press 2023\; Permanent Black 2023) and *Language\, Emotion\, and Politics in South India: The Making of a Mother Tongue* (Indiana University Press 2009\; Permanent Black 2010)\, which received the Edward Cameron Dimock Prize in the Indian Humanities. Her research has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities\, Wenner-Gren Foundation\, Fulbright\, European Research Council\, American Institute for Indian Studies\, and the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology. In 2020 she was a recipient of the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.\n\n If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at tinagrif@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:How Do You Conceptualize Your Time in Graduate School?: From the Practical to the Philosophical
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are moving directly from your undergraduate degree or returning after some time away\, the first term of graduate school will challenge you to expand skills critical to your success. Two of the most essential skills needed to thrive are reading and writing. This four-part Rackham/Sweetland workshop series will showcase reading and writing practices for new graduate students that will inform your approaches to reading and writing through the course of your graduate career.\n\nThis workshop will address time management strategies\, and effective habits and motivation for early graduate school success.\n\nTime management and productivity may not seem like an exciting topic\, but harnessing concrete tactics and strategies for how to maintain autonomy and agency over your own schedule is a crucial skill in graduate school. You will find yourself juggling multiple\, and often competing\, priorities– and many of them have to do with writing… lots\, and lots of writing! This 50-minute Rackham/Sweetland workshop will address time management strategies across scales (from pomodoros to physical planners to semester and year-long planning)\, as well as considerations regarding habits and motivation. The earlier you find what works for you\, the more you can tailor your schedule to fit your life instead of the other way around!\n\nRegister at https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/session/96936

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:What makes us feel supported? Unpacking work support perceptions
DESCRIPTION:For more than fifty years\, research has underscored the central role of social support in fostering employee well-being and organizational effectiveness. Yet\, despite its prominence\, relatively little is known about how employees actually form judgments of how supported they feel at work. This lack of clarity creates persistent challenges for scholars attempting to measure the construct and for practitioners striving to cultivate genuinely supportive workplaces. To address this gap\, I will present findings from two studies designed to clarify the nature of social support and illuminate the processes through which employees develop perceptions of it.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Magical Implementation (joint with Jacob Glazer)
DESCRIPTION:A principal needs to decide which of two parties deserves a prize. Each party privately observes the state of nature that determines which of them deserves the prize. The principal presents each party with a text that truthfully describes the conditions for deserving the prize and asks each of them what the state of nature is. The parties do not behave strategically. Each party can lie by activating a cheating procedure which relates to the state and the text given to him. The principal “magically implements” his goal if he can come up with a pair of texts satisfying that in any dispute\, he will recognize the cheater by applying the following rule: the truth is with the party satisfying that if his statement is true\, then the other party (using the cheating procedure) could have cheated and made the statement he is making\, but not the other way around. Several examples are presented to illustrate the concept.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Higher Dimer Models (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:The \"dimer model\" is the study of random perfect matchings (or \"dimer covers\") of a graph. More generally\, \"n-dimer covers\" are multisets of edges so that every vertex of the graph is covered by exactly n edges (counted with multiplicity). I will discuss an interesting class of probability measures on n-dimer covers which are related to SL(n)-webs. For these measures\, the partition function is given by a determinant\, and one can obtain nice formulas for local edge statistics and correlations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: The Valuative Tree\, Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Consider the set of valuations v: C[[x\,y]] -> R \cup \{\infty\}\, normalized so that min(v(x)\, v(y)) = 1. We'll show that this set naturally has the structure of a metric tree. This insight allows us to study the singularities of ideals\, graded systems of ideals\, and plurisubharmonic functions in a unified way. \n\nThis talk will serve as an introduction to the valuative tree\, following Favre-Jonsson. We'll focus on the basic structure of the tree and numerical invariants of valuations with examples.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Junjie Dong
DESCRIPTION:Water is fundamental to the Earth’s surface environment. Volcanic outgassing and subduction recycling connect the deep interior with the atmosphere and oceans\, shaping the planet’s long-term habitability. Surface oceans and mantle water are not separate reservoirs\; they are inherently linked to the planet’s thermal and redox evolution.\n\nIn this talk\, I will trace the storage and distribution of water in the mantle. Our earlier work showed that the capacity of the mantle to hold water depends strongly on temperature. A hotter Archean mantle could have held less water than the mantle actually contains today\, suggesting that Earth's early surface might have been covered by larger oceans. The interplay between mantle cooling\, water cycling\, and sea-level stability highlights the importance of the mantle as a dynamic water reservoir. More recently\, we examined how the disproportionation of iron in silicate minerals further regulates mantle water distribution. As the mantle becomes increasingly reduced with depth\, metallic iron stabilizes and reacts with structural water in nominally anhydrous minerals\, producing reduced hydrogen species such as molten FeHx or fluid H₂. This water–iron reaction prevents hydration of mantle silicates and drives hydrogen into metal-rich reservoirs\, thereby altering the form and location of water in the mantle.\n\nTogether\, this research provides a framework for understanding how much water the mantle can store and where it resides. The results suggest that the coevolution of water with Earth’s thermal and redox states governs its deep storage\, distribution\, and cycling\, and\, by extension\, ocean volume\, atmospheric composition\, and the long-term redox evolution of the planet.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Documentation as Political Practice: From Contemporary Nostalgia for the Left to the New Evidentiary Politics in 1970s South India
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/W6drV\n\nFive decades ago\, the Andhra Pradesh Radical Students Union launched the Go to Villages Campaign\, in which groups of university students were sent to rural Dalit settlements\, where they were tasked with documenting the conditions of life and labor. In 2020 she was a recipient of the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.\n \n This lecture is the keynote address of the CSAS 2025 Graduate Student Conference “New Directions in South Asia: From Nostalgia to New Politics.”\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at tinagrif@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

DESCRIPTION:Panelists: Prof. Jonathan Brennan\, Hrithik Ravi\nModerator: Prof. Rada Mihalcea\nInteractive Activities: Yara El-Tawil\, Snehal Prabhudesai\nOrganizer: Michigan AI Lab\, in collaboration with the Ann Arbor District Library\nWhen: September 5\, 2025\, 6:30pm – 7:30pm\nWhere: AADL Ann Arbor downtown\,1st Floor Lobby (343 S 5th Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48104)\n\nAI is increasingly embedded into our daily lives\, influencing the way we think\, learn\, and interact with the world. But as we rely on algorithms to help us write\, navigate\, and even make decisions\, several fundamental questions arise: Is AI shaping our habits\, our skills\, and our sense of self? Are we enhancing human capabilities\, or do we end up outsourcing them? Join us for a conversation with experts in AI\, psychology\, and ethics as we explore how AI may be quietly reshaping our cognition\, relationships\, and daily lives. We’ll ask where the line lies between assistance and overreliance\, and what it means to remain human in a machine-augmented world. With interactive activities developed by graduate students Snehal Prabhudesai and Yara El-Tawil.\n\nAbout the speakers:\n\nJonathan R. Brennan is an Associate Professor of Linguistics and Psychology at the Univeristy of Michigan where he directs the Computational Neurolinguistics Laboratory. His research focuses on how the human brain creates and makes sense of language\, drawing on theories and methods from linguistics\, neuroscience\, and computer science. This research is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. He recieved his PhD in 2010 from New York University and completed post-doctoral training at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He received the Early Career Award from the Society for the Neurobiology of Language in 2019 and is the author\, in 2022\, of \"Language and the Brain: A slim guide to Neurolinguistics.\n\nHrithik Ravi is an AI researcher currently working with Prof. Rada Mihalcea and Prof. Ambuj Tewari to explain why AIs can't solve basic planning and reasoning tasks. He completed his BSE in Computer Science and MS in Machine Learning\, both at the University of Michigan. His previous research mathematically proved how AI generalizes on inputs it didn't see during training\, and was published at a prestigious international AI conference. He aims to start a PhD next year\, and conduct deep research to develop a better\, rigorous understanding of AI's capabilities and limitations. You can follow him on Twitter (@r1pster7).\n\nModerator: Rada Mihalcea is the Janice M. Jenkins Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan and the Director of the Michigan Artificial Intelligence Lab. Her research interests are in natural language processing\, with a focus on multimodal processing and computational social sciences. She is an ACM Fellow\, a AAAI Fellow\, and served as ACL President (2018-2022 Vice/Past). She is the recipient of a Sarah Goddard Power award (2019) for her contributions to diversity in science\, and the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers awarded by President Obama (2009).

SUMMARY:Other:Literature's Refuge: Rewriting the Mediterranean Borderscape
DESCRIPTION:In 1923\, the Greco-Turkish Population Exchange uprooted and swapped nearly two million Christians and Muslims\, “pacifying” the so-called Near East through ethnic partition and refugeehood. This imposition of borders not only uprooted peoples from their place in the world\; it also displaced many of their stories from a place in world literature. In Literature’s Refuge\, William Stroebel recovers and weaves together work by fugitive writers\, oral storytellers\, readers\, copyists\, editors\, and translators dispersed by this massive “unmixing” of populations and the broader border logic that it set in motion. Stroebel argues that two complementary forces emerged as a template for the Eastern Mediterranean’s cultural landscape: the modern border\, which reshuffled people through a system of filters and checkpoints\; and modern philology\, which similarly reshuffled their words and works. Philologists and publishers defined modern literature by picking apart\, extracting\, reformatting\, or dispossessing refugee and diasporic texts across a racialized borderscape—a gray zone of semi-inclusion and semi-exclusion\, semimobility and immobility.\n\nStroebel reaches into the chinks and crannies of this borderscape to reconstitute the rich textual geography between Greek Orthodoxy and Sunni Islam\, between Greek-script\, Arabic-script\, and Latin-script literary traditions at the edges of Europe and the Middle East. Doing so\, he offers a new methodological toolkit for rewriting the modern borderscapes of world literature.\n\nWilliam Stroebel is assistant professor of Modern Greek and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Performance:David Zerkel\, tuba: \"Animal Ditties\"
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Professor David Zerkel\, tuba\, with:\nLiz Ames\, piano\nJason Fettig\, narrator\nTim Zerkel\, illustrator\n\nDavid and Liz will perform a recital that is thematically centered around our friends from the animal kingdom. The program will begin with Jean-Michel DeFaye's *Suite Marine*\, a depiction of various creatures from the sea. Jason Fettig\, Director of Bands at the SMTD and budding thespian\, will join us to narrate Anthony Plog's *Animal Ditties IX*\, which is a colorful work based on short poems by Ogden Nash\, widely considered to be America's Poet Laureate of Light Verse. Closing the first half will be the world premiere of *\"Woof!\"*\, by hornist\, composer\, and SMTD alum James Naigus. This piece is a clever depiction of the characteristics of seven dog breeds.\n\nThe second half is dedicated to the evening's protagonist. Written in 1960\, *Effie the Elephant\, Suite no. 1* by Alec Wider is a relatively early work for solo tuba depicting Effie in pursuit of various human endeavors: singing a lullaby\, going folk dancing\, and falling in love\, etc. David decided that Effie needed a rebrand\, and perhaps to get out a little more: we present *Effie Swipes Left*\, *Effie Goes Clubbing*\, *Effie goes to Therapy*\, *Effie Goes to the DMV*\, *Effie Adopts a Puppy*\, and *Effie Gets Tipsy*. We're grateful to the University of Michigan for funding this commission\, and are thrilled to perform this world premiere of Jim Stephenson's *The Further Adventures of Effie the Elephant*. Jim is a wonderful composer and recovering brass player\, and this caricature is as charming as it is clever.\n\nThis will be a multimedia event\, as David's much more talented brother\, Tim\, has created an illustration for each of the 32 (short) movements on the program. \n\nThis will be a family friendly evening of storytelling and a delightfully innocuous introduction to the tuba as a solo voice.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Gibson Brothers
DESCRIPTION:“The Gibson Brothers have built their legacy upon a sound that salutes the past while still pushing forward.” –Rolling Stone\n\nThere’s a reason why Ricky Skaggs pulled Eric and Leigh Gibson off the stage at the Ryman two decades ago and offered to produce their debut record. The same thing that led David Ferguson and Grammy Award winning producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach to co-write and produce their 14th album “Mockingbird” (2018) and release it on his own label Easy Eye Sound alongside cultural icons such as Hank Williams Jr. and Dr. John: The Gibson Brothers are the real deal. They can pick. They can sing .And they can write a damn good country song. They’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released albums on almost every premier Americana label you can think of including Sugar Hill and Rounder\, and\, if that’s not enough\, their songs have been recorded by bluegrass legends no less than Del McCoury.

SUMMARY:Performance:Over The Rhine
DESCRIPTION:A holiday show and more\n\nOver the Rhine\n2025 Christmas Tour Thoughts\n\nOne December\, not long after Over the Rhine began recording and touring\, we were invited to perform some seasonal songs on a public radio station in Cincinnati. It was Christmastime and apparently they thought we were up to the task. We worked up a few carols and traditional tunes and Karin even read a poem by Thomas Hardy called\, The Oxen.\n\nIt actually felt really good and conjured up an unusual mix of feelings from childhood: innocence\, loss\, wonder\, joy\, sadness. I think we were surprised.\n\nPeople must have tuned into the radio broadcast\, because we began receiving inquiries as to whether we had recorded any of our Christmas songs. I don’t think we had considered it at the time\, but any young\, struggling songwriter is open to the suggestions of the marketplace\, and people were persistent.\n\nIn December of 1996 – can it really be almost 30 years ago? – we recorded and released our first song cycle of some of the Christmas carols that still haunted us. We included a few original tunes and called our wintry mix The Darkest Night Of The Year. We played a special “darkest night” release concert on winter solstice in an old 1300-seat theater in Cincinnati. Every last seat was full. Folks began snatching up copies and seemed to agree that they hadn’t heard anything quite like it.\n\nWe began playing concerts around the Midwest every December and found that the rooms were usually packed full of people who had bundled in out of the cold with prized compatriots. Hats and scarves abounded. If you stepped outside during intermission\, you could make ghosts with your breath in the crisp night air. And it was dark – oh so dark: a time of year with its own music.\n\nA decade later\, in 2006\, we released our first full collection of original Christmas/holiday songs called Snow Angels. What is it about Christmas music and the undeniable gravitational pull it exerts on some songwriters? So many Christmas songs have already been written. I think we are genuinely curious about the ones that haven't yet been written.\n\nWe continued to tour every December and these special year-winding-down concerts began to feel like an annual tradition – gatherings of extended musical family\, without whom\, we’d be homeless.\n\nBy the time we released our third holiday album of original songs\, Blood Oranges In The Snow\, in December of 2014\, Karin suggested we had discovered a new genre of music: Reality Christmas.\n\nIt’s true: if you’ve buried a loved one\, or lost a job\, or battled a chronic illness\, that stuff doesn’t go away during the holidays. It can be a complicated season for many of us.\n\nAnd then there’s family.\n\nWhen Karin and I make the annual holiday pilgrimage home to visit family and pull into the driveway and turn off the car\, one of us inevitably looks over at the other and says\, “Tie a rope around my waist\, I’m goin’ in.”\n\nIn 2025\, just shy of 30 years after releasing our first holiday CD\, we are still at it. This year\, we will be leaning into some harmonies and making an intimate but hopefully holy ruckus. It won’t be all Christmas music: we’ll certainly mix in tunes from many of our records along the way. But hopefully it’s still true: hopefully you haven’t heard anything quite like it.\nMaybe a midnight snow will fall and turn each streetlight into its own private snow globe.\n\nMaybe\, regardless of whatever reality Christmas brings\, we’ll hear a faint echo of a song once rumored to have been sung by angels\, a song of peace on earth\, goodwill toward all…\n\nWe’ve never heard anything quite like it.\n\nWe hope you’ll join us\,\n\nLinford Detweiler\nWith Karin close by\nNowhere Else\nClinton County\, Ohio

SUMMARY:Performance:Mike Cooley
DESCRIPTION:“...one of the best American songwriters alive. The man is a documentarian of the casually overlooked\, the ruefully funny\, the unvarnished machinations of the human beast.” –PopMatters\n\nMike Cooley is an American guitarist\, singer\, and songwriter\, best known as a member of the Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers. The Alabama musical style blends elements of rock\, country\, and Americana\, and he is recognized for his sharp\, evocative lyrics and distinctive guitar work. As one of the band's primary songwriters\, Cooley has written numerous iconic tracks for Drive-By Truckers\, with his songs often exploring themes of personal introspection\, Southern identity\, and social commentary. Alongside bandmate Patterson Hood\, Cooley has been a driving force behind the band's evolution since their formation in the late 1990s\, contributing to their gritty\, honest sound and critical success.\n\nIn addition to his work with the band\, Cooley has pursued a solo career\, releasing his debut solo album The Fool on Every Corner in December 2012. The album showcases his storytelling prowess and ability to create poignant\, introspective songs with a more stripped-down\, intimate sound compared to his work with Drive-By Truckers. Known for his wit and keen observational style\, Cooley's solo work highlights his versatility as an artist\, cementing his place as an influential figure in contemporary American roots music.

SUMMARY:Performance:On a Winter's Night
DESCRIPTION:Due to an unforeseen injury to Patty Larkin\, On A Winter’s Night will be a trio format\, featuring John Gorka\, Cliff Eberhart\, and Lucy Kaplansky. The show will go on\, and the length and spirit will not change.\n\nPresenting the 2026 Reunion Tour of “On A Winter’s Night” from veteran singer-songwriters that remain among the brightest stars of the singer-songwriter movement for the past three decades. In 1994 Christine Lavin gathered them together\, along with folk and Americana artists to showcase music of the Winter Season on the now-classic On A Winter’s Night CD\, followed by several years of touring collaborations. These artists have released dozens of recordings and toured steadily through the decades\, with fond memories of their touring days together. The winter season is again celebrated by these unique and popular performers\, back together by popular demand.\n\nCLIFF EBERHARDT One of the most original songsmiths currently on tour\, Eberhardt is a highly intelligent\, articulate artist whose penetrating and profound lyrics are sometimes overshadowed by his extraordinary guitar playing. Upon close listening\, the Philadelphia-born singer’s gift for the English language is abundantly clear. The words that tumble from his mouth are framed by a raspy yet deeply elegant voice. \n\nJOHN GORKA Hailed by Rolling Stone as “the leading singer-songwriter of the New Folk movement\,” John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential singer-songwriter of the 90’s folk scene. Originally from New Jersey\, John served an apprenticeship at Godfrey Daniels coffeehouse in Bethlehem\, PA\, then the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene. Winning the prestigious New Folk award at the Kerrville Folk Festival\, in 1984\, he was then signed to Red House Records on which he released his landmark first of 17 recordings\, I Know. \n\nLUCY KAPLANSKY Blending country\, folk and pop styles\, Lucy has the unique ability to make every song sound fresh\, whether singing her own sweet originals\, covering country classics by June Carter Cash and Gram Parsons\, or singing pop favorites by Lennon/McCartney and Nick Lowe. A Billboard-charting singer and one of the top-selling artists on Red House Records\, she has topped the folk and Americana radio charts and has been featured on shows throughout the world from NPR’s Weekend and Morning Editions to BBC Radio to CBS Sunday Morning.

SUMMARY:Performance:Dar Williams
DESCRIPTION:New music!\n\n“It’s a highway\, filled with deep\, exotic colors and beautiful delicate things as well as the perils that come from moving so fast\,” says Dar Williams\, describing modern life. On her 13th album\, Hummingbird Highway\, out September 12 on Righteous Babe Records\, Williams celebrates the colors she glimpses from her vantage as a touring musician. “I was a kid from the suburbs who listened when her hippie teachers said to get out in the world\,” Williams muses. Hummingbird Highway is the latest chapter in a richly unfolding story. Drawing on her experience as a playwright\, Williams populates her latest album with nuanced characters that come alive in the space of a few minutes.
