SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Pfaffians as τ -functions of the BKP hierarchy: a constructive parametrization of complex pure spinors de E. Cartan
DESCRIPTION:It is well known that τ -functions of KP hierarchy are parameterized by points in Sato’s Universal Grassmannian manifold (UGM). These τ -functions have Schur expansions with coefficients satisfying Plücker relations. In this talk we will show that all τ -functions of BKP hierarchy can be written as Pfaffians of skew-symmetric matrices. These τ -functions are parameterized by points in the universal orthogonal Grassmannian manifold (UOGM). They have natural Schur-Q expansions with coefficients satisfying Cartan-Plücker relations. As a byproduct this parameterization gives a constructive description for complex pure spinors de E. Cartan. As an application\, we reprove a theorem due to A. Alexandrov which states that τ -functions of KdV satisfy BKP up to rescaling of the time parameters by 2. We prove this by showing that the KdV hierarchy can be viewed as 4-reduction of the BKP hierarchy. This interpretation gives complete characterization for the KdV orbits nside the BKP hierarchy. This talk is based on preprint arXiv:2210.03307.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"Rising Wealth Concentration and Disparities in Social Outcomes Across the United States\"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Manuel Schechtl\, Assistant Professor of Public Policy\, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, and 2025-2026 Visiting Fellow. Dr. Schechtl is a social demographer studying the creation\, persistence\, and reproduction of inequality\, poverty\, and mobility\, with substantive interests in wealth and its intersection with public policy. His research encompasses the quantitative analysis of survey data\, administrative records\, and experimental data. Currently\, Manuel is focusing on multiple facets of wealth inequality and accumulation\, with a particular focus on the impact of inheritances and inheritance taxes.\n\nAbstract: “Wealth inequality in the United States has reached heights not seen since the Gilded Age\, renewing concerns that skyrocketing disparities in economic power may challenge the basic social functioning of society. Yet empirical research linking rising wealth inequality to changes in social outcomes\, be it democratic erosion\, collapsing communities\, or increasing social immobility\, remains scarce. Beyond data limitations\, trying to study wealth inequality as a determinant rather than an outcome comes with substantive challenges for establishing causality. The talk outlines this broader research agenda\, including the development of a shift-share instrument for wealth inequality.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Information Spreads (with Antonio Falato and Jasmine Xiao)
DESCRIPTION:We propose a financially-driven business cycle propagation mechanism in which firm credit spreads arise from default concerns under incomplete information. Investors learn from public information and adjust expectations about firm creditworthiness downward in response to a deterioration in the profit outlook or increase in uncertainty. Empirically\, we show that spreads and real outcomes -- both at the aggregate and firm-level -- respond predictably to the new information summarized in professional forecast revisions. Quantitatively\, the model explains the high level and variation of credit spreads and the patterns in responding to public information\, and establishes a novel amplification mechanism whereby credit spreads transmit changes in public information and its uncertainty to investment and the real economy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series: 1) Uncovering the Early Evolution of Canids from an Exceptional Skeleton of Mesocyon// 2) Reducing Plastic Waste in the Lab (Pt. 1!)
DESCRIPTION:This week\, we have two speakers for our Tuesday seminar! \nPlease read details below: \n\n1) Dr. Anne Kort\, Michigan Society of Fellows Postdoctoral Scholar\n\nTitle: Uncovering the Early Evolution of Canids from an Exceptional Skeleton of Mesocyon\n\nDescription: Living members of the dog family\, including wolves\, foxes\, and our own household pets\, are well-adapted for running fast and far\, with long legs and stabilized joints. These skeletal adaptations appear in many fossil relatives of dogs\, especially in the last 15 million years when grasslands became more dominant on the landscape. But what did the earliest members of the dog family look like? Mesocyon coryphaeus is an early relative of modern dogs that lived in the Pacific Northwest of North America approximately 30 million years ago. Although this species has been known from skulls and teeth for over a century\, the skeleton of Mesocyon has been essentially unknown through this time. A spectacular fossil of Mesocyon was discovered by John Day Fossil Beds National Monument staff in the late 1980s. After over 500 hours of preparation work on and off throughout the following decades\, the near-complete skeleton of this animal was fully uncovered in 2022. This skeleton is close to a coyote in size but has short\, robust limbs and relatively flexible joints\, suggesting that Mesocyon was an ambush predator\, unlike most modern canids.\n\n2) Dr. Jill Myers\, biodiversity lab manager\n\nTitle: Reducing Plastic Waste in the Lab (Pt. 1!) \n\nDescription: Globally\, research labs generate more than 12 billion pounds of plastic waste per year. Single-use plastic pipette tips are one major source of this waste. In this short talk\, I will introduce our new pipette tip washing machine and share plans for its current and future use in EEB and the anticipated impacts.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Innovation and the Great Divergence
DESCRIPTION:The Great Divergence of GDP per capita between the leading regions of Europe and China occurred around 1700 as a period of positive growth in Britain and the Netherlands coincided with a period of negative growth in the Yangzi Delta. The positive trend in northwest Europe was a continuation of a process that began in the fourteenth century\, while the negative trend in the Yangzi Delta continued a pattern of alternating periods of growing and shrinking\, but reaching lower levels of income. TFP growth was strongly positive in Britain after the Black Death\, in the Netherlands during the Dutch Golden Age and again in Britain from the mid-seventeenth century. Although TFP growth was positive in China during the Northern Song dynasty\, it was predominantly negative during the Ming and Qing dynasties\, in the Yangzi Delta as well as in China as a whole.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2025 Ziwet Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 9\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1324: Science 2.0 - Evolving the Scientific Method in the Age of AI\nThere will be a reception after the Tuesday Colloquium in the Math Upper Atrium.\n\nWednesday\, September 10\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1360: Matrix-Mimetic Tensor Algebra: Optimal Decompositions and Equivariant Learning\n\nThursday\, September 11\, 4 pm\, East Hall 4448: From Big Data to Right Data: Information-Theoretic Optimal Experimental Design\n\n\nTuesday\, September 9\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1324: Science 2.0 - Evolving the Scientific Method in the Age of AI\nThis lecture addresses the historical trade-off between interpretable but expertise-dependent deductive models and scalable but non-interpretable data-driven approaches by introducing hybrid AI frameworks that transcend this divide. We present AI-Descartes (generator-verifier paradigm)\, AI-Hilbert (unified hypothesis generation and testing)\, and AI-Noether (algebraic-geometric theory revision via abductive reasoning) as transformative approaches to mathematical model discovery. These frameworks advocate for conceptual evolution of the scientific method toward deeper AI integration in pursuing both interpretable and universal models.\n\nWednesday\, September 10\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1360: Matrix-Mimetic Tensor Algebra: Optimal Decompositions and Equivariant Learning\nThis lecture introduces a novel tensor-tensor algebra that preserves essential matrix-algebraic properties while overcoming limitations of conventional tensorial frameworks\, culminating in an Eckart-Young-like theorem that resolves a decades-long open problem in tensor analysis. We demonstrate how this framework enables seamless retrofitting of existing computational workflows (Hamiltonian neural networks\, tensor Graph Convolutional Networks) and extends to tensor group symmetry theory for equivariant learning applications. This work opens pathways to new tensorial algebras that can reveal deeper patterns in high-dimensional information previously inaccessible to traditional methods.\n\nThursday\, September 11\, 4 pm\, East Hall 4448: From Big Data to Right Data: Information-Theoretic Optimal Experimental Design\nThis lecture addresses the modern paradox where unprecedented data accumulation capabilities make selective identification of informative samples more critical than ever for meaningful model development. We review theoretical foundations of experimental design within inverse problems frameworks\, examining strategies for well-posed and ill-posed settings while establishing approaches for design preferences\, budget allocation\, and risk assessment. Through information-theoretic principles\, we demonstrate how optimal experimental design creates a paradigm shift from data volume to information content\, with transformative implications for resource-constrained scientific methodology.\n\nDr. Lior Horesh is a Principal Research Scientist\, Master Inventor and a Senior Manager of the ‎Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science (formerly Mathematics of AI) department at IBM Research. His department’s mission is to approach some of the big ‎challenges the field of AI is facing\, from a principled mathematical angle. Additionally\, Dr. Horesh ‎holds an adjunct Associate Professor position at the Computer Science department of Columbia ‎University where he teaches graduate level Advanced Machine Learning and Quantum Computing ‎courses. Dr. Horesh Received his Ph.D. in 2006 from UCL and joined IBM in 2009.\n\nThe Ziwet Lectures were established in 1934 through a bequest from Professor Ziwet\, Chair of the UM Department of Mathematics from 1888-1925. He stipulated that his estate “should be used for the promotion of scientific work.” The Ziwet lectures have been one of the most prestigious lecture series in the department.

Putin seems to think war is working for him. Is it? Or could it imperil his country's welfare and his own political survival? Jill Dougherty\, author of *My Russia: What I Saw Inside the Kremlin*\, examines the evidence.\n \n Jill Dougherty served as CNN's Moscow Bureau Chief for almost a decade\, as well as covering the White House and U.S. State Department. She currently is CNN's on-air contributor on Russia issues and teaches at Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service. Her areas of interest are disinformation and young people in Russia. She travels widely in the region\, with a special focus on the Baltic countries and Georgia.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Performance:The Blues of Achilles
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Joe Goodkin\n\nThe Blues of Achilles is a set of 17 original songs for guitar and vocals. It tells the story of the Iliad through the eyes of the characters: Achilles\, Patroklus\, Briseis\, Helen\, Priam\, and more. The performance evokes the original oral tradition of epic bards that stretches back millennia and frames the poem in an accessible way (both musically and narratively) for modern audiences. A discussion will follow the performance. \nMore info at https://www.thebluesofachilles.com.\n\nJoe Goodkin is a Chicago-based singer/songwriter with a BA in Classics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has performed his original song retellings of Homer's Odyssey and Iliad 500 times in all 50 US States\, Canada\, Greece\, Italy\, England\, Scotland\, Ireland\, and the Netherlands. He has released 14 albums of original music\, including a collection called Consolations and Desolations produced by founding Wilco drummer Ken Coomer.

SUMMARY:Performance:Solas
DESCRIPTION:“the finest Celtic ensemble this country has ever produced” –The Boston Globe\n\nSolas is lighting up stages across the globe as they celebrate three decades of pushing boundaries and honoring traditions in Irish music. Hailed by The Wall Street Journal as “an Irish traditional band bearing all the marks of greatness\,” Solas continues to captivate audiences with their spellbinding musicianship and genre-defying creativity.\n\nFormed in New York City in 1995\, Solas quickly rose to prominence as a revolutionary force in Irish-American music. Now\, with twelve critically acclaimed albums and a reputation for dynamic\, emotionally charged live performances\, Solas has set new standards for musicianship\, repertoire\, and intensity.\n\nWhile Solas has seen various lineup changes over the years\, the spirit of innovation and reverence for Irish tradition has remained constant. SUMMARY:Performance:BeauSoleil
DESCRIPTION:Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!\n\nFor the past 50 years\, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet has been making some of the most potent and popular Cajun music on the planet. Born out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members\, and created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals\, BeauSoleil is notorious for bringing even the most staid audience to its feet. BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from the distilled spirits of New Orleans jazz\, blues rock\, folk\, swamp pop\, Zydeco\, country and bluegrass\, captivating listeners from the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans\, to Carnegie Hall\, then all the way across the pond to Richard Thompson’s Meltdown Festival in England.\n\nTheir most recent album was titled “From Bamako to Carencro\,” alluding the cultural and migratory connection between Bamako\, in Mali\, West Africa\, and Louisiana (symbolized in name by the Lafayette\, LA suburb of Carencro)\, a connection that draws a sonic bloodline back to BeauSoleil’s roots. Since becoming the first Cajun band to win a GRAMMY with “L’amour Ou La Folie” (their Traditional Folk Album – 1998) and then a second Grammy in 2010\, “Live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival”\, BeauSoleil has garnered many accolades\, including twelve GRAMMY nominations. They are regular guests on Garrison Keillor’s NPR show A Prairie Home Companion\, where Keillor has dubbed them as “the best Cajun band in the world\,” and their music is so integral to the Cajun culture that they have been featured on the New Orleans–based hit HBO program “Treme”. Critics unanimously agree that it is “bon temps\, every time they play\,” (New York Times).
