SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CCPS Lecture. Polish Diaspora Identities in Archival Home Movies
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Zborowska will examine home movies and related oral histories as sources for studying the transformation of the Polish-American diaspora. Her project “Critical Archives of Ordinariness: Vernacular Moving Image Practices and Migrant Identity in Polish Chicago” juxtaposes home movies — “ordinary” motion pictures created for family and close friends — with interviews with their creators to uncover the “not-so-ordinary” capabilities of this underused data source for studying and empowering underrepresented groups. Zborowska’s work shows how analogue home movies offer a unique insight into the lives of individuals and families\, as well as the experience of migration\, adaptation to new environments\, and changing lifestyles\, habits\, values\, and norms.\n\n Agata Zborowska is a cultural historian with research interests at the intersection of material and visual cultures\, property relations\, and critical archival studies. Her project “Critical Archives of Ordinariness: Vernacular Moving Image Practices and Migrant Identity in Polish Chicago” investigates pre-digital era home movies and related oral histories to challenge and broaden our understanding of evolving migrant and diaspora identities. As a Chicago Film Archives scholar in residence\, she works on the Polish diaspora film collection to increase community access to archival material. Her research has been supported by the European Commission\, Kosciuszko Foundation\, Franke Institute for Humanities at the University of Chicago\, Al Larvick Conservation Fund\, and Polish National Science Centre.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | S-matrix Bootstrap: Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:The modern S-matrix bootstrap carves out the space of 4-point amplitudes compatible with unitarity\, causality\, and locality. In my talk\, I review the current standing and future goals of the bootstrap with an emphasis on three central questions: What features do legal amplitudes have? How can we determine when these 4-point amplitudes extend to n-point S-matrices? To what extent can the bootstrap be applied to amplitudes in the real-world?

SUMMARY:Presentation:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series - Where Granularity Matters: Calibrating Subdomain Inference for Binary Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nMPSDS M3 Series\n\nSeptember 3\, 2025\n12:00 - 1:00 pm EST\n\nIn person\, room 1070\, Institute for Social Research and via Zoom.\nThe Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation.\n\nWhere Granularity Matters: Calibrating Subdomain Inference for Binary Outcomes\nSmall area estimation (SAE) helps us make accurate estimates for local communities or groups\, such as counties\, neighborhoods\, or demographic subgroups\, when there are not enough data for each area. This is important for targeting local resources and policies\, especially when national-level or large-area data mask variation at a more granular level. Researchers often fit hierarchical Bayesian models to stabilize estimates when data are sparse. Ideally\, Bayesian procedures also exhibit good frequentist properties\, as demonstrated by calibrated Bayes techniques. However\, hierarchical Bayesian models tend to shrink subdomain estimates toward the overall mean and may produce credible intervals that do not maintain nominal coverage. Hoff et al. developed the Frequentist\, but Assisted by Bayes (FAB) intervals for subgroup estimates with normally distributed outcomes. However\, non-normally distributed data present new challenges\, and multiple types of intervals have been proposed for estimating proportions. We examine subdomain inference with binary outcomes and extend FAB intervals to improve nominal coverage and estimation efficiency. We describe how to numerically compute FAB intervals in the binary case and demonstrate their improvement through repeated simulation studies. Finally\, we apply the proposed methods to estimate COVID-19 infection rates in subgroups\, based on geography and demographic characteristics. This is joint work with Rayleigh Lei.\n\nYajuan Si is a Research Associate Professor in the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. Yajuan’s research lies in cutting-edge methodology development in streams of Bayesian statistics\, linking design- and model-based approaches to survey inference\, data integration\, missing data analysis\, confidentiality protection involving the creation and analysis of synthetic datasets\, and causal inference with observational data. She regularly teaches courses on statistics and sampling in the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science and the Joint Program in Survey Methodology.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS Colloquium Series. Family Archives and Female Spaces of Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:In early modern Islamic history\, women are often excluded from the historical record\, leaving gaps in our understanding of gendered experiences. Professor Babayan explores gendered literacy and female friendship through a seventeenth-century anthology preserved in the library of the Urdubadi family\, a household of poets and bureaucrats in Safavid\, Iran. She argues that this anthology functions as a family archive\, making visible the social world of the household in which it was compiled. Central to this archive is the role of a female family member\, a widow of the Urdubadi\, household whose pilgrimage to Mecca is documented alongside expressions of love for a female companion who was forced to leave Isfahan due to circulating rumors about their relationship. Through this case\, Professor Babayan highlights how a ritual of sisterhood reveals an empathetic community and expands our understanding of premodern female friendships.\n \nKathryn Babayan specializes in the social history and culture of the early-modern Persianate world\, gender studies\, and the history of sexuality. She has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for 2024-25. Babayan is the author of two award-winning books\, *Mystics\, Monarchs and Messiahs: Cultural Landscapes of Early Modern Iran* (Cambridge\, MA: Harvard University Press\, 2003)\, and *The City as Anthology: Eroticism & Urbanity in Early Modern Isfahan* (Stanford: Stanford University Press\, 2021). Babayan has also co-authored *Slaves of the Shah: New Elites of Safavid Iran*\, with Sussan Babaie\, Ina Baghdiantz-McCabe\, and Massumeh Farhad (London: I.B. Tauris\, 2004)\, and co-edited two books: *Islamicate Sexualities: Translations Across Temporal Geographies of Desire* with Afsaneh Najmabadi (Cambridge\, MA: Harvard University Press\, 2008)\, and *An Armenian Mediterranean: Words and Worlds in Motion* with Michael Pifer (Cham\, Switzerland: Palgarve Macmillan\, 2018).\n\nAccommodation: If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning the Major: The Role of Early Specialization in Educational and Labor Market Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:This paper examines how the timing of college field specialization affects students’ educational and labor market outcomes. To study this question\, I exploit a 2011 policy change at a Midwestern flagship university that incentivized only engineering students to declare a major earlier. I develop a conceptual framework in which students learn about their match quality across majors through course grades while accumulating credits toward graduation. Earlier major declaration increases exposure to major-specific high-level coursework\, but also reduces flexibility to exit the initial field as a result of increased specialization\, creating a trade-off. The framework generates predictions that I test empirically using a difference-in-differences design. I find that the policy increased within-engineering switching by 75%\, reduced exits from engineering by 80%\, and improved academic outcomes\, as reflected in higher GPAs and a 14% increase in honors graduation rates. LinkedIn-based career data further indicate enhanced early career outcomes in engineering: greater persistence in engineering positions\, longer initial job tenure\, and a greater likelihood of attaining managerial roles. These results suggest that\, in settings where students retain flexibility in major selection\, incentivizing early major declaration can improve student-major match quality.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Non-Thermal Plasmas for Revolutionizing Goods Production
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nIt is well-recognized that non-thermal (non-equilibrium) plasmas have played a critical\, if unsung\, role in every day technologies\, and really\, our modern way of life. The microchips and processors that make up our phones\, computers\, and the entire information technology ecosystem all utilized plasma processing at some point in the manufacturing chain. While microfabrication technologies such as etching and sputtering are well developed and commercially deployed\, the next evolution of plasma processing will expand the types and kinds of goods beyond electronics to include fertilizers\, high-value chemicals\, metals\, and more\, helping create a more energy resilient and security robust manufacturing sector. This talk will overview two areas that are primed for great impact based on processing at a plasma-liquid interface. The first is bulk-phase chemical and metal production using plasma electrolysis\, where a plasma in contact with a solution drives useful solution-phase chemistry without the need for catalysts. The second is additive manufacturing\, where a plasma in contact with aerosols containing functional inks accelerates and improves the printing process of functional devices. The talk will overview both fundamental work on the plasma-liquid interface and discuss specific application demonstrations that highlight recent advances\, stressing the need for continued research and development to move the field toward practical technologies.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDavid B. Go is the Viola D. Hank Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and Vice President & Associate Provost for Academic Strategy at the University of Notre Dame. Prior to his current role\, he was the Chair of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. Professor Go has published widely in the areas of plasma science and engineering\, heat transfer and fluid dynamics\, and chemical analysis and holds ten patents or patent applications\, leading to two licensed technologies. Professor Go has been recognized with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Research Award\, the National Science Foundation CAREER award\, the Electrochemistry Society Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship\, the Electrostatics Society of America Rising Star and Distinguished Service Awards\, and the IEEE Nuclear & Plasma Sciences Society Early Achievement Award. He has also been recognized as a Viskanta Fellow and received the Outstanding Mechanical Engineer Award from Purdue University. Professor Go is an ASME Fellow\, Senior Member of IEEE\, and former President of the Electrostatics Society of America. At U. Notre Dame\, he has received the Rev. Edmund P. Joyce\, C.S.C. Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and was a Kaneb Center for Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellow. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2008\, Professor Go received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame\, M.S. in aerospace engineering from the University of Cincinnati\, and Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person\, with livestream in Zoom. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2025 Ziwet Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 9\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1324: Science 2.0 - Evolving the Scientific Method in the Age of AI\nThere will be a reception after the Tuesday Colloquium in the Math Upper Atrium.\n\nWednesday\, September 10\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1360: Matrix-Mimetic Tensor Algebra: Optimal Decompositions and Equivariant Learning\n\nThursday\, September 11\, 4 pm\, East Hall 4448: From Big Data to Right Data: Information-Theoretic Optimal Experimental Design\n\n\nTuesday\, September 9\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1324: Science 2.0 - Evolving the Scientific Method in the Age of AI\nThis lecture addresses the historical trade-off between interpretable but expertise-dependent deductive models and scalable but non-interpretable data-driven approaches by introducing hybrid AI frameworks that transcend this divide. We present AI-Descartes (generator-verifier paradigm)\, AI-Hilbert (unified hypothesis generation and testing)\, and AI-Noether (algebraic-geometric theory revision via abductive reasoning) as transformative approaches to mathematical model discovery. These frameworks advocate for conceptual evolution of the scientific method toward deeper AI integration in pursuing both interpretable and universal models.\n\nWednesday\, September 10\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1360: Matrix-Mimetic Tensor Algebra: Optimal Decompositions and Equivariant Learning\nThis lecture introduces a novel tensor-tensor algebra that preserves essential matrix-algebraic properties while overcoming limitations of conventional tensorial frameworks\, culminating in an Eckart-Young-like theorem that resolves a decades-long open problem in tensor analysis. We demonstrate how this framework enables seamless retrofitting of existing computational workflows (Hamiltonian neural networks\, tensor Graph Convolutional Networks) and extends to tensor group symmetry theory for equivariant learning applications. This work opens pathways to new tensorial algebras that can reveal deeper patterns in high-dimensional information previously inaccessible to traditional methods.\n\nThursday\, September 11\, 4 pm\, East Hall 4448: From Big Data to Right Data: Information-Theoretic Optimal Experimental Design\nThis lecture addresses the modern paradox where unprecedented data accumulation capabilities make selective identification of informative samples more critical than ever for meaningful model development. We review theoretical foundations of experimental design within inverse problems frameworks\, examining strategies for well-posed and ill-posed settings while establishing approaches for design preferences\, budget allocation\, and risk assessment. Through information-theoretic principles\, we demonstrate how optimal experimental design creates a paradigm shift from data volume to information content\, with transformative implications for resource-constrained scientific methodology.\n\nDr. Lior Horesh is a Principal Research Scientist\, Master Inventor and a Senior Manager of the ‎Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science (formerly Mathematics of AI) department at IBM Research. His department’s mission is to approach some of the big ‎challenges the field of AI is facing\, from a principled mathematical angle. Additionally\, Dr. Horesh ‎holds an adjunct Associate Professor position at the Computer Science department of Columbia ‎University where he teaches graduate level Advanced Machine Learning and Quantum Computing ‎courses. Dr. Horesh Received his Ph.D. in 2006 from UCL and joined IBM in 2009.\n\nThe Ziwet Lectures were established in 1934 through a bequest from Professor Ziwet\, Chair of the UM Department of Mathematics from 1888-1925. He stipulated that his estate “should be used for the promotion of scientific work.” The Ziwet lectures have been one of the most prestigious lecture series in the department.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CCMB/DCMB Weekly Seminar Series featuring Winston Timp\, PhD (Prof. at Johns Hopkins)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nSingle molecule sequencing has evolved from a niche technology into a robust\, accessible platform for decoding the complexities of genome regulation and cellular identity. In this talk\, we'll explore how recent improvements in accuracy\, throughput\, and targeted enrichment now allow us to phase variants\, resolve repetitive loci\, and detect epigenetic modifications—often in the same molecule. These methods enable analysis of allele-specific methylation\, chromatin accessibility\, and protein-DNA interactions\, even in challenging regions like centromeres or BRCA1. We'll also cover how these techniques apply to spatial and single-cell transcriptomics\, empowering nuanced studies in neuroscience and cancer. Altogether\, this work moves us closer to a future where multiomic profiling at single-molecule resolution becomes routine—at the bench\, not just the core.\n\nShort Bio\n\nWinston Timp\, an associate professor of biomedical engineering\, focuses on the development and application of sequencing technologies to gain a deeper understanding of biology and a more accurate set of clinical tools for human disease. He holds joint appointments in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.\n\nTimp’s research integrates the principles of biophysics\, molecular biology and computational biology to create new tools for exploring the epigenomes and genomes of different lifeforms ranging in size from the flu virus to hummingbirds to California redwoods. Based on the knowledge gained from these studies\, Timp and his team apply their toolsets to clinical samples for the diagnosis\, surveillance\, and treatment of human disease.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Computing the adapted Wasserstein distance between the laws of stochastic processes
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, the adapted Wasserstein (AW) distance has emerged as an attractive alternative to the usual distances between laws of stochastic processes due to its application to dynamic optimisation problems\, such as optimal stopping\, for example. However\, similar to classical Wasserstein distance\, the exact value of the AW distance is difficult to determine in general. In this talk\, we discuss two methods — a transfer principle\, and a discretisation approach — to compute\, either explicitly or numerically\, the AW distance between the laws of certain stochastic processes\, such as mean-square continuous Gaussian processes and stochastic differential equations.

SUMMARY:Performance:Katie Pruitt: Time Wasn't Wasted Tour
DESCRIPTION:Time Wasn’t Wasted Tour\n\nKatie Pruitt is living proof of music’s power to transform the way we experience the world. Soon after the arrival of her acclaimed debut Expectations—a 2020 LP on which she documented her journey in growing up queer in the Christian South—the Georgia-bred singer / songwriter / guitarist heard from countless listeners that her songs had impacted their lives on an elemental level. With her sophomore album Mantras\, the Nashville-based musician now looks inward to explore such matters as gender identity\, self-compassion or the lack thereof\, and the struggle for peace in times of chaos and uncertainty—ultimately arriving at a body of work that speaks to the strength in undoing harmful self-beliefs and fully living your truth.\n\nMainly produced by Collin Pastore and Jake Finch (both known for their work with boygenius and Lucy Dacus)\, Mantras delves deeper into the empathetic storytelling and incisive self-examination that defined Expectations—an album that earned Pruitt a nomination for Emerging Artist of the Year from the Americana Music Association\, in addition to drawing praise from major outlets like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. This time around\, Pruitt sets her lived-in lyricism to a folk-leaning sound informed by her love for the more experimental edges of indie-rock\, stacking her songs with plenty of propulsive grooves and overdriven guitars.\n\nLooking over the tracklist to Mantras\, Pruitt notes that a certain narrative thread emerged without her intention. “I didn’t realize it at the time\, but the throughline for this record ended up being my own personal journey of letting go and learning how to love myself again—it begins with tension\, frustration\, and fear and resolves to a place of acceptance\, surrender\, and stillness\,” she says. “I hope when people hear the record they feel what I felt after writing it\, which was a sense of trusting myself and trusting that—no matter how bad things look—there’s always hope where there’s fear. I know that so much of the time we feel alone in our pain\, so hopefully these songs help everyone to see that they can work through those big life changes and end up loving themselves a lot more.”
