DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Equilibrium Effects of Quality Regulation of For-Profit Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:This paper studies the equilibrium effects of the Gainful Employment Rule (GER)\, the largest quality regulation policy in the U.S. higher education market. The rule required for-profit institutions to meet quality standards to retain access to their primary source of revenue: federal student aid. Using administrative data and an event-study design\, I find that the GER increased for-profit exit rates by 5 percentage points\, while surviving institutions reduced prices and enrollment by 4% and 20%\, respectively. Untargeted competitors raised prices without enrollment losses\, consistent with increased market power. Informed by these reduced-form estimates\, I develop an empirical model of demand and supply with endogenous exit and a quality constraint to evaluate how counterfactual levels of regulatory stringency would shape the distribution of value-added within an equity–efficiency framework. I show that tuning regulatory stringency can increase equity without reducing efficiency.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Multi-view data\, where different data types are collected from the same samples\, are increasingly prevalent due to advances in omics and wearable technologies. For instance\, The Cancer Genome Atlas provides omics data from multiple platforms\, while affordable digital technologies enable the collection of multiple types of high-frequency wearable signals (e.g.\, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)\, actigraphy) alongside tabular clinical characteristics. Integrating this multi-view data has the potential to enhance scientific insights but also presents significant analytic challenges. In this talk\, I will focus on one critical problem in multi-view representation learning: distinguishing between joint and individual signal subspaces in noisy\, high-dimensional data. I will present our recent work\, where we characterize the conditions under which these subspaces can be reliably identified\, based on an analysis of spectrum perturbations of the product of projection matrices. We develop an easy-to-use\, scalable estimation algorithm based on these insights\, which employs the rotational bootstrap and random matrix theory to partition the observed spectrum into joint\, individual\, and noise subspaces. I will illustrate this method using multi-omics data from colorectal cancer patients and a nutrigenomic study of mice. Towards the end of the talk\, I will broaden the discussion to the unique challenges of high-frequency wearable data\, where a distributional representation is more attractive than a matrix representation of derived features. I will briefly highlight some recent work in this area and conclude by outlining open problems and future research directions for multi-view representation learning.

DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:This virtual Flash Talk highlights Professor Natalie Abell’s latest field season on the Cycladic island of Kea\, Greece. Building on excavations from the 1960s and 1970s\, Dr. Abell’s research investigates metalworking traditions at Kephala\, an important Final Neolithic site\, and Ayia Irini\, a settlement featuring a multi-phase shrine active from the Bronze Age until at least the Classical period. Her team is analyzing metal artifacts\, metallurgical debris\, and associated pottery to shed light on nearly two millennia of copper\, silver\, and lead working in domestic contexts. This talk explores how lives and economies in northwestern Kea were shaped by metallurgy and connected to wider developments across the ancient Aegean.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, graduate students\, and guests talking about their recent research or current projects. DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Veronica Williamson (Museum Studies Program student\; PhD candidate\, Germanic Language & Literature)\n\nWhen the Chickasaw Cultural Center’s 184-acre campus opened just outside of downtown Sulphur\, Oklahoma in 2010\, several shifts happened simultaneously: Sulphur—known for its healing waters—re-emerged as a geographically-central cultural site for the tribe\; the Cultural Center itself also became administratively separate from a series of other tribal museums\, including the Chickasaw Capitol Building\, Old Council House Museum\, and Chickasaw White House (all located to the southwest in the Nation’s capital\, Tishomingo). Connected yet doubly separate from its peer institutions\, the Cultural Center has come to serve a series of unique and vital functions within the tribe.\n\nIn this talk\, I’ll draw on my Collections Management Intern experiences to examine two of the Cultural Center’s most impactful purposes: serving as an active guardian of tribal sovereignty by stewarding the tribe’s material history and providing a space that functions as a threshold to community for tribal individuals. In doing so\, I hope to elucidate the role that the Cultural Center plays in comparison to the Chickasaw Nation’s other cultural initiatives and to consider the unrelenting importance of material history for tribal sovereignty.

A century later\, it was an abandoned building with an uncertain future. From cornerstone to keystone\, from the first director to the people who saved it from destruction\, explore the life of a historic observatory 170 years in the making.\n\n\"Watcher of the Sky\" is being developed by student docents at the Detroit Observatory. They are currently collaborating with a museum design firm on the final version of the exhibit\, which will debut in fall 2025. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statements of Value vs. Statements of Action: Exploring Organizational Responses to COVID-19 and Race in 2020
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on a content analysis of statements from Fortune 500 companies\, US News and World Report’s top 100 universities\, and Forbes’ top 100 nonprofits\, this project captures and analyzes organizational responses to COVID and issues of racial inequality in the US. Both issues were central in US life in 2020. We explore two questions: How did organizations talk about COVID and race-related issues in 2020? Relatedly\, was there any variation in the presence and content of organizational statements about these two issues? Based on their statements\, COVID pushed organizations to produce tangible responses grounded in actions aimed at reducing the impact of the pandemic\, while race-related issues generated condemnations of racism attached to abstract reflections on the implication of racial inequality or calls for further discussion of the issue. As ubiquitous as both issues were in the US\, any talk of a “national conversation” around these topics misleadingly obscures important variation in how organizations talked about these concurrent social issues. Across organizational type\, the contrast in how companies talked about both issues suggests that robust organizational engagement with broader social issues can happen\, but organizations are selective in choosing which issues garner deep\, action-oriented engagement.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar:  Particle Simulations of Fluids and Plasmas
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  The first part of the talk presents simulations of elliptical fluid vortices described by the 2D incompressible Euler equations where an open question is whether such vortices evolve into an axisymmetric state. The second part of the talk presents simulations of collisionless electrostatic plasmas governed by the 1D1V Vlasov-Poisson equations applied to Landau damping and halo formation in an ion beam. The fluid calculations use a recently developed version of Chorin's vortex method and those techniques were adapted to do the plasma simulations. Rappaport Lecture Series\, “Bananapocalypse: Un/Making Plantation Capitalism\,” with Assistant Professor Alyssa Paredes:\n\n“Existential crises hang over the producers of the world’s food. Many of these challenges are self-inflicted. In the banana-growing regions of the Southern Philippines\, which produce fruit for export to Japanese markets\, plantations unleash pesticide drift\, food waste\, water effluent\, and fungal pathogens into the surroundings. The plantocratic elite systematically shirks responsibility for these excesses\, using legal contracts\, scientific conventions\, and standards of trade to frame them as “external” to their supply chains. However\, plantation management is regularly proven wrong in its assumption that the things they try to push downstream will not double back to haunt them. Everyday actors on the plantations’ peripheries transform the devices designed to work against them into openings for intervention. Their efforts implore critical scholars of the environment and of global economies to take seriously the possibility that Big Ag’s increasingly frequent failures to reproduce itself are more than just minor inconveniences to business-as-usual. In this series of lectures\, I trace the afterlives of the externalities that commodity production obscures\, disguises\, or otherwise erases from its ambit of accountability. She holds a BS in engineering from Stanford University and an MFA in painting from the Royal College of Art\, London. She has exhibited her artwork around the world\, including MoMA P.S.1\; MassMoca\; The Drawing Center\; Kunsthalle Vienna\; The Today Art Museum\, Beijing\; among others. Her work has been featured in the New York Times\, The New Yorker\, Washington Post\, The Brooklyn Rail\, Time Out New York\, ArtNews\, Artforum\, and on PBS\, CNN\, NPR\, and the BBC. Two books have been published on her work: *Food Chain* (Aperture 2000) and *American Cockroach* (Aperture 2004). Her video “Safari” won Best Experimental Short at SXSW Film Festival in 2008. In 2010 Chalmers received a Guggenheim Fellowship. She lives in NYC.\n\nDr. Stella Cousins is an ecosystem ecologist interested in understanding how and why forests change. She uses patterns measured in trees and forests such as growth\, mortality\, and community dynamics to reveal how ecosystems respond to human demands and disturbances. Her current research focuses on the drivers of tree mortality in California forests and the transformations that can be expected in ecosystems that experience rapid change. In earlier research she has examined forest carbon processes\, air pollution impacts to montane forests\, provision of watershed services\, and the management of vegetated cultural landscapes. Her work leverages comprehensive surveys conducted by the USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program\, long-term monitoring\, and measurements ranging from individual tree rings to whole forest structures. Dr. Cousins is broadly interested in how landscapes can be sustainably managed for multiple benefits\, which often involves collaborating on multi-disciplinary teams and investing in place-based data collection. She is especially interested in social-environmental problems facing the Western United States. Prior to joining SEAS\, Dr. Cousins was an Assistant Professor at California Polytechnic State University and a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley. She completed her Ph.D. at UC Berkeley and was a graduate fellow at the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC). \n\nAmanda Krugliak is a curator and artist known for performative\, conceptual\, and experiential installations\, in charge of programming for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery since 2009. In 2012\, she co-created the internationally recognized installation *State of Exception *with artist Richard Barnes and U-M anthropologist Jason De León based upon De León’s Undocumented Migration Project. She is frequently a guest lecturer and leads workshops on curating scholarship and the gallery as a social justice practice.

DESCRIPTION:The origins of the glacial-interglacial timescale changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide observed in ice cores spanning the last million years is a decades long debate in the earth and ocean sciences. Reconstructions of nutrient drawdown in the Southern Ocean have figured prominently in most data driven explanations for ocean uptake of carbon dioxide during ice ages. Amongst these reconstructions\, diatom-bound nitrogen isotope records of nutrient drawdown in the surface ocean are both abundant and considered robust. Groundtruthing of the diatom nitrogen isotope proxy is ongoing.

In joint work with Ishan Levy\, we prove the Picard rank conjecture when g is sufficiently large relative to d. The main input is a new result in topology where we prove that the homology of Hurwitz spaces stabilizes and compute their stable value. Using the same homological stability results\, we prove a version of Malle's conjecture over  F_q(t)\, which predicts the number of G extensions of F_q(t)\, for G a finite group.

He is currently working on a collection of stories and a novella. Jared will be introduced by Sean Cavanaugh\n \nAlejandro de la Garza is a writer from Dobbs Ferry\, New York. Prior to coming to the University of Michigan\, he worked as a journalist covering climate change.
