DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:The Office of Campus Sustainability\, The U-M Medical School\, and the Planet Blue Ambassador Program are hosting a “Sustainable Lab Day” in the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC) on September 16th to try and reduce barriers for labs looking to become sustainably certified. The sustainable lab certification helps labs reduce their energy and waste\, make greener pruchases\, and practice green chemistry. Prior to the event\, labs need to complete the baseline certification application form. Then they can sign up for a lab site visit to review improvements as well as attend a Planet Blue Ambassador training with their lab mates. Free pizza will be available during the training. There will be a farmer's market event from 11am-1pm outside of Picasso's and there will be a table outside of Picasso's from 9am-2pm with sustainability information\, giveaways\, and snacks!

Edited by Julia Miller and published by Cathleen A. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Linocuts by Meredith Stern
DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. DESCRIPTION:Join the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Jake Grumbach\, an associate professor at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley.\n\nAbstract: “Compared to those of other countries\, politicians in the United States are among the oldest. We investigate the role of money in politics in maintaining age inequality in political influence and office-holding. Using record linkage\, we create a novel dataset that combines administrative data on the age of voters\, donors\, and candidates. Descriptively\, we find that the median dollar in the U.S. campaign finance system comes from a 66-year-old donor—significantly older than the median voter\, candidate\, or elected official—and that older donors are much more ideologically conservative than younger donors. We then investigate whether candidate age matters to donors. Results from within-district and within-donor analyses suggest that individuals are more likely to donate and donate more to candidates closer to their age. We conclude with a discussion of how various campaign finance policies might affect the age distribution of money in politics.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Geography of Innovative Firms(joint work with Craig A. Chikis and Benny Kleinman)
DESCRIPTION:Most U.S. innovation output originates from firms that operate R&D facilities across multiple local markets. We study how this geographic structure influences aggregate innovation and growth\, and whether it is socially optimal. First\, we develop an endogenous growth model featuring multi-market innovative firms that generate knowledge spillovers to geographically proximate firms. In equilibrium\, firms may operate in too few or too many local markets\, depending on how sensitive the local spillovers they generate are to their local size. Second\, to quantify these effects\, we link the model to data on firms’ R&D locations\, patents\, and citation networks. Using an event-study design\, we show that firms’ spatial expansion increases spillovers to other firms and estimate how these spillovers depend on a firm’s local footprint. Our estimates imply that U.S. innovative firms operate in too few markets relative to the social optimum. Third\, using quantitative counterfactuals\, we find that policies promoting broader spatial scope yield larger welfare gains than standard R&D subsidies. Moreover\, unlike R&D subsidies\, such policies can also reduce regional inequality.

Dedicated to the fallen Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov\, the exhibit’s title is borrowed from one of his poems. Exploring the role of empathy and humanity in the times of crisis\, Ukrainian and American artists Katya Lisova (textiles)\, Matvii Vaisberg (prints)\, and Ira Bondarenko (ceramics) reflect on the power and limits of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\n\nThe exhibition\, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan’s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5\, 2025\, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Description: Research has shown that active learning and high structure can reduce disparities in learning outcomes by 40-60% across STEM courses (Theobald et al. 2020). Follow-up research is currently focused on two questions: 1) why are active learning and high-structure so effective in helping underprepared students\, and 2) what additional interventions can close historical gaps even further? To achieve disproportionate benefits for underprepared students\, the heads-and-hearts hypothesis focuses on increased deliberate practice and supportive learning environments\, while the study-skills hypothesis emphasizes course designs based on learning objectives and advances in cognitive science. The literature shows that switching from traditional to evidence-based teaching leads to significantly higher student success.

Inequities in stress\, trauma\, and neighborhood conditions become biologically embedded in immune cells\, shaping patterns of immunosenescence. By examining how the aging immune system captures these lived experiences\, we can use it as a “social sensor” to trace the biological consequences of inequity. Drawing on analysis of the Health and Retirement Study and the National Neighborhood Data Archive NaNDA data\, this seminar will bridge social and biological sciences\, offering unique insights into population health.\n\nBiography\nDr. Grace Noppert is a social and infectious disease epidemiologist whose work bridges the biological and the social\, examining how trauma\, persistent viral infections\, and neighborhood environments shape immune aging at the cellular level. Her interdisciplinary research portfolio includes grant-funded studies on immunosenescence\, infectious disease disparities\, and biomarker innovation. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Magnetophononics: Breaking Time Reversal Symmetry with  Non-Maxwellian Magnetic-esque Fields
DESCRIPTION:Optical rectification of circularly polarized light generates a static magnetization through the inverse Faraday effect. Recent ultrafast experiments have unveiled a substantial\, orders-of-magnitude gap between the measured magnetic fields and theoretical predictions [1]. In this talk\, we show that the discrepancy arises due to a missing factor on the order of  α^{-2} ≈ 2 × 10^4 \, where α ≈ 1/137 is the fine structure constant. \n\nWe demonstrate that circular polarization generally creates large non-Maxwellian fields that disrupt time-reversal symmetry\, effectively mimicking authentic magnetic fields within the material while eluding detection externally [2]. These unconventional fields\, reaching effective magnitudes as high as 100 T\, lead to phenomena akin to Faraday rotation and robustly interact with magnons in magnetically ordered materials. The connection between the non-Maxwellian fields and the Autler-Townes and AC Stark effects of atomic physics will be discussed.\n\nThese considerations are particularly relevant to the direct\, resonant excitation of polar phonons. Contrary to common perception\, the origin of phonon-induced magnetic activity does not stem from the motion of ions themselves\; instead\, it arises from the effect their motion exerts on the  electron subsystem via the electron-phonon interaction [3]. Because the light-induced non-reciprocal fields depend on the square of the phonon displacements\, the chirality the photons transfer to the ions plays no role in magnetophononics.\n\n1. M. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We will discuss a recent joint work with Yu Deng (Chicago) and Xiao Ma (Michigan) which gave the rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann and fluid equations from Newton's laws. This executed the so-called \"Hilbert’s Program\"\, proposed in Hilbert's sixth problem from 1900\, which asked for the derivation of fluid equations (like Euler’s and Navier-Stokes’) using Boltzmann’s kinetic theory as an intermediate step. The result follows parallel progress (by Deng and myself) in the wave setting\, where colliding particles are replaced by interacting waves.\n\nBio: Dr. Hani is the Frederick W. and Lois B. Gehring Professor of Mathematics and his research is in the area of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE). Particularly\, I study equations modeling wave-type phenomena\, which are often called nonlinear dispersive PDE.

DESCRIPTION:Hyperbolic groups are groups with ‘negative curvature’. Although their definition is geometric in nature\, hyperbolic groups satisfy various algebraic rigidity properties. One example is Paulin’s theorem\, which sharply characterizes torsion-free hyperbolic groups with finitely many outer automorphisms.\n\nIn this talk I will introduce the notion of hyperbolic groups (with lots of examples)\, and walk through the proof of Paulin’s theorem\, which uses a limiting argument to extract group actions on spaces called ‘R-trees’. If time permits\, I will explain additional applications of this technique.

Shelleg is the author of the award-winning book \"Jewish Contiguities and the Soundtrack of Israeli History\" (Oxford University Press\, 2014)\, in addition to \"Theological Stains: Art Music and the Zionist Project\" (Oxford University Press\, 2020) and \"The State of Afterness: Contemporary Music in an about Israel\" (Oxford University Press\, 2025). Previously the director of the Cherrick Center for Israel Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem between (2021-24)\, Shelleg has also served as a curator for the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (2020-22)\, and a music contributor for Haaretz. His new book \"Jewish Art Music as Art Music\" is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press in 2026.\n\nJeremiah Lockwood is a scholar and musician\, working in the fields of Jewish studies\, performance studies and ethnomusicology. He is a Research Fellow at the Lowell Milken Center for Music of American Jewish Experience at UCLA. His work engages with issues arising from peering into the archive and imagining the power of “lost” forms of expression to articulate keenly felt needs in the present. His first book\, Golden Ages: Hasidic singers and cantorial revival in the digital era\, was published in 2024 by University of California Press. Jeremiah was a 2023-24 UPenn Katz Center Fellow\, and a 2022-23 Yale Institute of Sacred Music Fellow. As 2024-25 Frankel Center Fellow he is writing his second book project\, a cultural history of the cantorial phonograph era. Lockwood has recorded more than a dozen albums over a music career that spans decades\, with his band The Sway Machinery\, the Khazones Underground\, and other projects.\n\nTamar Sella is a scholar of music and performance cultures. She is currently working on her first book\, Unsettled Sounds\, which proposes a lens for understanding the political meanings of Arab-Jewish cultural inheritance in the wake of its dislocations. Her work has been published in journals including Women and Music\, American Music\, and Ethnomusicology. Before her current position as assistant professor of ethnomusicology at the University of North Texas\, Tamar held a postdoctoral fellowship at Rice University. She holds a PhD from Harvard and a BA from UC Berkeley\, both in music.\n\nUri Schreter is an interdisciplinary musicologist\, composer\, performer\, and filmmaker whose work bridges scholarship and creative practice. He holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from Harvard University\, as well as an M.A. in History and a B.A. in Music from Tel Aviv University. His research focuses on twentieth-century Jewish history\, with particular attention to Yiddish language\, music\, and culture. His work has been supported by the American Musicological Society\, the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture\, and the YIVO Institute\, and has appeared in the Journal of Synagogue Music and In Geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies. Beyond academia\, Schreter collaborates with artists across Jewish cultural spheres\, including Shane Baker\, Anthony Russell\, Isabel Frey\, and Judy Bressler. In 2025–2026\, he will serve as a Fellow at the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan and as the Bader Postdoctoral Fellow in Jewish History at Queen’s University.

DESCRIPTION:Insect Encounters brings together two distinct bodies of video artwork by artist and filmmaker Catherine Chalmers: the *American Cockroach* series and the *Leafcutters* quadrilogy. The five films of *American Cockroach* capture a surreal and at times hauntingly anthropomorphic view of the contemporary cockroach\, using intricate set design and immersive macro cinematography to trace a path from the creature’s chaotic life in the wild to a bizarre yet equally hostile existence inside modern kitchens and bathrooms. Meanwhile\, the four Leafcutters videos are an unusual and mesmerizing collaboration with millions of wild ants\, filmed in Panama and Costa Rica. DESCRIPTION:Join the Quantitative Methods in the Social Science (QMSS) Program for a resume-building workshop with a special focus on highlighting & marketing your data-related skills from QMSS (and other!) courses. \n\nFirst\, students will receive a rundown of general advice on how to structure a resume\, how a resume is different from a curriculum vitae (CV)\, and some dos and dont's and tips and tricks for using them in applications. Then\, we will dive deeper into specific advice for how to market data and analytical skills taught in QMSS courses including QMSS 201\, 301\, and 451 and how to supplement previous and current work/related experiences with data-related points. \n\nIn the second half of the workshop\, students will work in real-time on their own resumes to edit their skills and experience sections based on the workshop's content and ask questions one-on-one with the presenter about their specific resume\, experiences\, and/or goals.\n\nFollowing the workshop\, participants will have an opportunity to send their resume in and receive written feedback from the presenter and/or senior QMSS Peer Mentors as well as make one-on-one appointments with the presenter or QMSS Peer Mentors to discuss further.\n\nStudents are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet to take notes\, work on (or create!) your current resume\, and/or ask specific questions during the workshop.
