DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. DESCRIPTION:CREES is delighted to support the international art exhibition Between Voice and Silence. Dedicated to the fallen Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov\, the exhibit’s title is borrowed from one of his poems. Exploring the role of empathy and humanity in the times of crisis\, Ukrainian and American artists Katya Lisova (textiles)\, Matvii Vaisberg (prints)\, and Ira Bondarenko (ceramics) reflect on the power and limits of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\n\nThe exhibition\, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan’s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5\, 2025\, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | BPS Black Holes in AdS3xS3xS3xS1 and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:The Bekenstein–Hawking formula gives a coarse-grained count of the number of microstates of a black hole\, and it is remarkable that it may sometimes be reproduced from a microscopic count in string theory. However\, the standard approach neglects quantum effects in the bulk which lead to pathologies for both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric black holes\, such as the breakdown of thermodynamics at sufficiently low temperatures. \nIn this talk\, we will explain how a more careful treatment of the gravitational path integral resolves these tensions and leads to new and surprising effects that are completely invisible classically.\nFor extended supersymmetry\, we will find that physically sensible black holes can preserve at most 4 supercharges\, with the most exceptional example being black holes in AdS3xS3xS3xS1. This notoriously poorly understood background in string theory has a nonlinear large N=4 superconformal symmetry\, but we are nevertheless able to make novel predictions for the BPS and near-BPS spectrum from gravity. Notably\, we find discrete jumps in the BPS spectrum as a continuous parameter is adjusted-- a quantum gravity effect for which no microscopic derivation is currently known. This result is corroborated by constructing a family of non-extremal supersymmetric black holes that contribute to a supersymmetric index yet possess a temperature-dependent free energy.

DESCRIPTION:Between the two world wars\, millions of Egyptians experienced industrial work and urban life for the first time\, transitioning from rural\, handcraft traditions to factory systems. *Industrial Sexuality* by Hanan Hammad explores this transformation through the lives of working-class men\, women\, and children in al-Mahalla al-Kubra\, home to Egypt’s largest textile factory. Drawing from previously untapped archival sources\, Hammad reveals how industrialization reshaped gender roles\, sexuality\, and public morality. The factory environment intensified issues like harassment\, exploitation\, and the public exposure of private relationships. Yet\, these workers played an active role in shaping modern Egyptian urban life\, challenging elite-centered narratives of modernity.\n   \n   Hanan Hammad is a social and cultural historian of modern Egypt whose work focuses on gender\, sexuality\, working classes\, and popular culture. She is the author of enormous academic publications\, most notably *Industrial Sexuality: Gender\, Urbanization\, and Social Transformation in Egypt* from the UT Press 2016 and *Unknown Past: Layla Murad\, The Jewish-Muslim Star of Egypt* from Stanford University Press. Her work has won prizes from the National Women's Studies Association\, the Association for Middle East Women's Studies\, MESA\, the Arab American Book Awards\, and the Journal of Social History. DESCRIPTION:The Hodge-Tate decomposition for an abelian variety is a p-adic analogue of the Hodge decomposition of a complex algebraic variety which allows us to relate the étale cohomology of a variety to its Hodge cohomology groups. In this talk\, we sketch a proof of this decomposition for H^1 of an abelian variety over a p-adic field with good reduction. The only prerequisites are the basic facts about p-adic fields and abelian varieties.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Exploring moiré magnetism in twisted two-dimensional magnets
DESCRIPTION:Moiré superlattice emerges from the interference between two mismatched atomic lattices\, and it has led to tremendous success in designing and tailoring the electronic states in two-dimensional (2D) homo- and hetero-structures. Yet\, the power of moiré superlattice in controlling the spin degree of freedom and thus modifying the magnetic states is much less explored. Only very recently after the development of 2D magnet research\, there have been a few experimental attempts in realizing moiré magnetism in twisted 2D magnet homo-structures. In this talk\, I will show our recent effort in studying magnetic phases in twisted double bilayer chromium triiodide (CrI3) and progressive steps towards realizing moiré magnetism. Noting that bilayer CrI3 is a layered antiferromagnet and that any homogeneous stacking of two bilayers necessarily produces zero magnetization\, we have revealed\, in twisted double bilayer CrI3\, an unexpected net magnetization showing up at intermediate twist angles and its accompanied noncollinear spin textures. I will show the optical spectroscopy signatures of this twist-induced magnetic phase\, then discuss its dependence on twist angle\, external magnetic field\, and temperature [1\, 2\, 3\, 4\, 5]. \n\nReference: \n1. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: Multipoint distributions of the KPZ fixed point with compactly supported initial conditions
DESCRIPTION:The KPZ fixed point is a universal limiting space-time random field for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. While the joint law of the KPZ fixed point at a fixed time has been studied extensively\, the multipoint distributions of the KPZ fixed point in the general space-time plane are much less well understood. More explicitly\, formulas were only available for the narrow wedge initial condition [JR21\,Liu22] and the flat initial condition [Liu22] for the multipoint distributions\, and the half-Brownian and Brownian initial conditions [JR22\, Rah25] for the two-point distributions.\n\nIn this talk\, I will talk about my recent work with Yuchen Liao in which we obtained the first formula for the space-time joint distributions of the KPZ fixed point with general initial conditions of compact support. The formula is obtained through taking 1 : 2 : 3 KPZ scaling limit of the multipoint distribution formulas for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP). A key novelty is a probabilistic representation\, inspired by [MQR21]\, of the kernel encoding the initial condition for TASEP\, which was first defined through an implicit characterization in [Liu22]. Moreover\, we also verify that the equal time degenerated version of our formula matches the path integral formula in [MQR21] for the KPZ fixed point.\n\nThis is a joint work with Yuchen Liao (University of Science and Technology of China).

DESCRIPTION:I will discuss two notions of entropy for the geodesic flow: the topological entropy and the measure-theoretic entropy with respect to the Liouville measure. How these dynamical invariants relate to the underlying Riemannian metric has long been of interest. For negatively curved surfaces\, Katok proved that equality of the Liouville and topological entropies characterizes metrics of constant negative curvature. In this setting\, Manning asked how these two entropies vary along the normalized Ricci flow\; more specifically\, he proved the topological entropy is monotonic. The main result of this talk\, joint with Erchenko\, Humbert\, and Mitsutani\, is that the same is true for the Liouville entropy. In addition to geometric and dynamical methods\, we use microlocal analysis to differentiate the Liouville entropy with respect to a conformal perturbation of the metric.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: Mathematical modeling of dopamine rhythms and timing of dopamine reuptake inhibitors
DESCRIPTION:Dopamine (DA) plays a vital role in mood\, alertness\, and behavior\, with dysregulation linked to disorders such as Parkinson's disease\, ADHD\, depression\, and addiction. In this study\, we develop and analyze a reduced mathematical model of dopamine synthesis\, release\, and reuptake to investigate how daily rhythms influence dopamine dynamics and the efficacy of dopamine reuptake inhibitors (DRIs) used in the treatment of various neuropsychiatric conditions. We simplify a detailed mathematical model of dopamine synthesis\, release\, and reuptake and demonstrate that our reduced system maintains key dynamical features including homeostatic regulation via autoreceptors. Our model captures core autoregulatory mechanisms and reveals that DRIs can exert substantial time-of-day effects\, allowing for dopamine levels to be sustained at elevated levels when administered at circadian troughs. These fluctuations depend sensitively on the timing of DRI administration relative to circadian variations in enzyme activity. We further extend the model to incorporate feedback from local dopaminergic tone\, which generates ultradian oscillations in the model independent of circadian regulation. Administration of DRIs lengthens the ultradian periodicity. Our findings provide strong evidence that intrinsic fluctuations in DA should be considered in the clinical use of DRIs\, offering a mechanistic framework for improving chronotherapeutic strategies targeting dopaminergic dysfunction.

We're excited to kick off our month-long celebration with a keynote by New York Times bestselling author Erika L. Sánchez and we hope to see you there! Food provided.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nErika L. Sánchez is the daughter of Mexican immigrants. Her debut poetry collection\, Lessons on Expulsion\, was a finalist for the PEN America Open Book Award. Her debut young adult novel\, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter\, was a New York Times bestseller\, National Book Award finalist\, and Tomás Rivera Award winner. Time has recognized it as one of the best YA novels of all time. It is now being made into a film directed by America Ferrera. I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter has also been adapted to the theater at Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago and Seattle Rep Theater. Most recently\, Sánchez published a critically acclaimed memoir-in-essays titled Crying in the Bathroom with Viking Books. It won the Chicago Review of Books Nonfiction award. Sánchez was a Fulbright Scholar\, a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent fellow from the Poetry Foundation\, a Princeton Arts Fellow\, a recipient of the 21st Century Award from the Chicago Public Library Foundation\, and a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. DESCRIPTION:“weightless notes and melodies that pierce our hearts…. somewhere between Gillian Welch and Laura Veir.” –Rolling Stone\n\nToronto songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abigail Lapell returns with Anniversary\, an evocative collection of original love songs. Produced with Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker\, the album was recorded at 200-year-old St Mark’s Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake\, Ontario. Dekker helped shape the sessions’ spooky\, resonant sound and also lent his voice to a couple of spellbinding duets.\n\nLapell’s deft lyrics jostle with love song tropes\, grappling with love’s finitude and the irony of how codependency and longing are revered in popular music. A ghost story is woven through the album: waltzing in the dusty barroom country of “Blue Blaze\,” buried in the superstitious lyrical streak of “Rattlesnake” and audible in a wheezing organ as it shuts down at the end of “Footsteps.” Still\, Anniversary emerges as an earnest celebration of commitment. Earworms like “Anniversary Song” and “Someone Like You” showcase intricately layered harmonies\, while closer “Stars” affirms that there’s no place the speaker would rather be than with the one she loves.\n\nLapell has garnered three Canadian Folk Music Awards\, hit number one on Canadian folk radio and reached a staggering 40 million + streams on Spotify.
