DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. Her process follows personal rules:\nno hierarchy of materialssubvert expected usecomplicate binaries\, stereotypes and associationsmisuse\, misapplyallow for variable arrangementsrepeat\, reiterate\, reuseconsider the subversive possibilities of the excessive\, fantastic\, and necessaryalways let the labor be visible\nMcKenna earned her BFA from Columbus College of Art &amp\; Design in 2012 and later completed her MFA at Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan. DESCRIPTION:CREES is delighted to support the international art exhibition Between Voice and Silence. Dedicated to the fallen Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov\, the exhibit’s title is borrowed from one of his poems. Exploring the role of empathy and humanity in the times of crisis\, Ukrainian and American artists Katya Lisova (textiles)\, Matvii Vaisberg (prints)\, and Ira Bondarenko (ceramics) reflect on the power and limits of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\n\nThe exhibition\, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan’s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5\, 2025\, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Jet-Age Nationhood: Pan American World Airways as Postwar Japan

Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/D8z9M\n   \n   When Pan American Airways began regular commercial service to Tokyo in 1947\, it caused a tremendous stir in Occupied Japan (1945-1952). Although Pan Am was not the first American carrier to fly to Japan\, the airline brought prestige and influence unmatched by any other in the world. Pan Am’s Jet Age became Japan’s as well. Based upon interviews\, archival research\, and media analysis\, this talk examines the airline’s activities in Japan from 1947 through 1986\, when Pan Am sold its Pacific routes to United Airlines and subsequently went bankrupt in 1991. Professor Yano will examine both the role of Japan within Pan Am’s business strategy and the role of Pan Am in establishing Japan’s own “Jet-Age nationhood.” What did Japan’s Jet-Age nationhood look like\, and how did Pan Am help shape it? The intertwining of Pan Am and Japan during the postwar years served as a critical cross-national bond\, as an American corporation within the Japanese political sphere. Pan Am thus became Japan’s global icon\, through its dominance of the international airline industry and its domestic media presence.\n\nProfessor Yano will also deliver a lecture on Saturday\, September 20\, as part of the series \"A Celebration of Japanese Music and Dance: The Ethnomusicology Legacy of Professor William P. DESCRIPTION:A reception with light refreshments will be held in the B10 lobby before each seminar from 1-1:30 p.m.\n\nAbstract: Transport of nanoparticles affects applications ranging from targeted drug delivery to point-of-care diagnostics to processing of nanocomposite materials. In each of these applications\, nanoparticles must be transported through a macromolecule-laden fluid to reach the desired target\, whether a cancerous tumor\, a membrane\, or a polymer melt. For large particles\, the surrounding medium is effectively homogeneous across the surface of the particle\, so that the transport properties can be directly related to the bulk fluid properties. For nanoparticles\, however\, the particle size is comparable to the length scales of heterogeneities in the fluid so that the particle dynamics decouple from bulk mechanics and are poorly understood. Here\, we combine microscopy and scattering experiments with molecular simulation to investigate how nanoparticles transport through polymer solutions\, which serve as a tunable model of viscoelastic liquids\, and examine how the dynamics of the nanoparticles are coupled to relaxations of the surrounding liquid. I will focus on our recent work probing transport through solutions of synthetic and natural polyelectrolytes\, in which charges along the polymer backbone alter the polymer's structure and dynamics. The physics elucidated in these studies will grant better control over the transport and dispersion of nanoparticles through complex\, heterogeneous materials.\n \nSpeaker Bio: Jacinta Conrad is a physical scientist studying transport and dynamics within soft\, complex materials and matrices. Using a broad range of microscopy\, rheology\, scattering\, and computational methods\, her group seeks to understand how microscale particles\, including colloids\, nanoparticles\, bacteria\, viruses\, and proteins\, explore and/or transport through confined and crowded environments. Insights gained from fundamental studies of these non-equilibrium processes inform the design of materials for preventing fouling and corrosion\, for remediating environmental damage\, and for sensitively diagnosing disease. She earned an SB in Mathematics from the University of Chicago and MA and PhD degrees in Physics from Harvard. She worked as a postdoctoral associate in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before starting her faculty position at the University of Houston (UH). Currently\, she is the Frank M. Tiller Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at UH\, an Executive Editor at ACS Applied Nano Materials\, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)\, the American Physical Society (APS)\, and the Society of Rheology.

DESCRIPTION:Presenter Bio:\n\nBrad Sturt is an assistant professor of Information and Decision Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago. His research uses the methodologies of stochastic programming and robust optimization to develop solutions for operational problems in business and government. Recent applications have included election security\, data-driven assortment planning\, and high-dimensional options pricing. His research has received several recognitions\, including the Roger J-B Wets Junior Researcher Best Paper Prize in Stochastic Programming\, second place in the INFORMS Junior Faculty Interest Group (JFIG) Paper Competition\, and second place in the INFORMS George Nicholson Student Paper Competition. Outside of academia\, he is a co-founder of BallotIQ\, an elections administration startup based in Ann Arbor.\n\nAbstract:\n\nFor more than a century\, election officials across the United States have inspected voting machines before elections using a procedure called Logic and Accuracy Testing (LAT). This procedure consists of officials casting a test deck of ballots into each machine and confirming the machine produces the expected vote totals. In this talk\, I will bring a scientific perspective to LAT by introducing a robust optimization approach to designing test decks with rigorous security guarantees. To facilitate deployment at scale\, we develop a practically efficient custom algorithm for solving our robust optimization problems based on the cutting-plane method. In partnership with the Michigan Bureau of Elections\, we retrospectively applied our approach to the November 2022 election\, which revealed that our test decks would have required only 1.2% more ballots than the current practice. Our approach has since been deployed by Michigan in real-world elections to improve election security and increase public confidence.

DESCRIPTION:Creating a Cellular “Google Map” of the Brain with Engineered Spatial Sequencing Technologies\nAbstract:\nCells are not independent\; they communicate and work synergistically in the brain. Unlike traditional approaches that rely on bulk assays\, novel spatial technologies preserve the tissue's architecture at near single-cell resolution\, allowing for more precise functional interpretation of the cell types and states. In this talk\, I will introduce spatial proteomics and spatial epigenetics\, two leading methods that enable in situ detection of proteins and open chromatin. Compared to spatial transcriptomics\, spatial proteomics directly addresses key challenges in visualizing cellular morphology and evaluating whether RNAs are the best proxies for proteins. I will discuss how these approaches advance our understanding of brain function and disease\, particularly in psychiatric disorders and traumatic brain injury.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Powering the Intelligence Economy: Energy Solutions for Robots\, Data Centers\, and Disconnected Grids
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe intelligence economy—the emerging system in which machines\, data centers\, and grids embody and deliver intelligence into everyday life—will only thrive if we can solve its energy challenges. On the embodied side\, autonomous systems such as aircraft\, robots\, and heavy machines demand energy densities far beyond today’s lithium-ion batteries. While animals store energy at nearly 9 kWh/kg and operate continuously by consuming new fuel\, robots typically run for only a fraction of the day on batteries with less than 0.3 kWh/kg. On the infrastructure side\, data centers and compute are limited by the availability of energy sources\, yet the disconnected and rapidly growing electrical grids in the United States require new ways to move energy across space and time. More than 2\,000 GW of generation and storage projects are currently stalled awaiting transmission interconnections. Building new power lines is costly and slow\, but the nation’s transportation network could connect grids by carrying high–energy-density electrochemical fuels that are charged in regions of oversupply\, shipped or piped to areas of demand\, and converted back into electricity at lower cost and with greater flexibility than new transmission infrastructure.\n\nOur research addresses both challenges with a common approach: developing electrochemically rechargeable fuels and advanced metal–air systems that use separate charging and discharging devices to unlock higher energy densities\, lower costs\, and leverage domestic supply chains. For robots and vehicles\, we demonstrate bio-inspired designs—emulsion electrolytes that act like “artificial blood” to deliver oxygen with faster kinetics than saturated electrolytes\, and mechanically rechargeable metal–air cells that mimic digestion—to extend endurance well beyond lithium-ion limits. For grid applications\, we show that organosulfur-based electrochemical fuels can deliver >850 Wh/kg at relevant power densities\, be recharged with >98% efficiency\, and be rapidly refilled in under two minutes\, enabling not only continuous machine operation but also “chemical wires” that transfer power between grids. These approaches rely on earth-abundant\, low-CO2 materials and existing logistics networks\, offering a scalable\, sustainable path forward.\n\nBy unifying advances in robot endurance and grid connectivity under the shared framework of the intelligence economy\, this talk will highlight how new electrochemical paradigms can power both the machines that embody intelligence and the infrastructure that moves it.\n\nBiography:\nJames Pikul is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and serves on the Microsystems Advisory Council for DARPA. He earned his B.S. (2009)\, M.S. (2011)\, and Ph.D. (2015) in Mechanical Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign\, where he was a DOE Office of Science Graduate Research Fellow and Carver Fellow. Before joining Wisconsin\, he was on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania.\n\nJames leads a research group that develops new energy storage concepts\, multifunctional materials\, and soft robotic systems to power the emerging intelligence economy. His team has contributed to advances in electrochemistry and soft matter physics\, demonstrating batteries with record power and energy densities\, soft actuators and sensors that enhance robotic perception and mobility\, and electrochemical approaches for adaptive metals\, including room-temperature self- repair. DESCRIPTION:Jayatee’s Title: Warm chemistry in planet-forming disks\n\nAbstract: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) revolutionizes our understanding of planet-forming disks\, offering unprecedented insights into their physical and chemical structures. Here\, I present the results from JWST MIRI/MRS spectra of disks around very low-mass stars known to have a higher occurrence rate of planets\, revealing dust features and\, a rich array of large molecules such as C6H6\, C4H2\, C3H4\, C2H6\, HC3N\, C2H2\, CO2 etc. and isotopologues such as 13CCH2 and 13CO2. By leveraging the recently developed extended hydrocarbon chemical network that can form simple aromatics such as C6H6 and using the thermo-chemical disk models\, I check if these molecular detections are consistent with our astro-chemical understanding in the high-density inner regions of the disks. As we predominantly observe hydrocarbons in the disk\, varying the carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio leads to the formation of these detected species in the surface layers of the disk. There still are unidentified spectral features in the spectra that led me to employ these models to predict additional detectable species. We need the spectrum for these predicted species to confirm or rule out their presence. I then use thermo-chemical disk models to place the slab model results into a larger context and identify the 2D geometry conducive to those conditions. My study paves the way for a deeper understanding of the spectra. It provides new constraints for planet formation in disks around VLMS and highlights the instrumental role of JWST in providing insights into the origins of planetary systems.\n\n\nYisheng’s Title: Magnetic Pressure Driven Outflows: Lightly Loaded Jets and Dense Disk Winds in Protostellar Systems \n\nAbstract: Jets and outflows in young stellar objects (YSOs) play a critical role in connecting the inner disk environment with large-scale observables\, yet their launching mechanisms remain poorly understood. Observations of both symmetric and asymmetric\, including uni-polar\, jets raise important questions about the physical processes that govern jet morphology. To investigate these processes\, we conduct non-ideal MHD simulations that naturally give rise to three distinct outflow components: (1) a fast\, magnetically driven jet along the rotation axis\; (2) an MRI-active turbulent disk wind at intermediate cylindrical radii\; and (3) a slower\, laminar disk wind at larger radii. We find that jets are lightly mass-loaded and launched by toroidal magnetic pressure\, bridging features of both classical magneto-centrifugal and magnetic tower models. Crucially\, whether MRI-driven turbulent winds fill the polar region and suppress jet launching in one hemisphere\, thereby producing asymmetric or uni-polar jets\, depends on the interplay between the stellar magnetosphere and the large-scale disk magnetic field. In cases where the disk field dominates\, jets are more likely to be one-sided\; conversely\, a strong\, rotating stellar magnetosphere suppresses polar MRI activity and facilitates the launching of symmetric\, bipolar jets. This sensitivity to magnetic field topology provides an observational handle for probing the relative roles of stellar and disk magnetism.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DE Seminar: From Schrödinger to diffusion- speckle formation of light in random media and the Gaussian conjecture
DESCRIPTION:A well-known conjecture in physical literature states that high frequency waves propagating over long distances through turbulence eventually become complex Gaussian distributed. The intensity of such wave fields then follows an exponential law\, consistent with speckle formation observed in physical experiments. Though fairly well-accepted and intuitive\, this conjecture is not entirely supported by any detailed mathematical derivation. In this talk\, I will discuss some recent results demonstrating the Gaussian conjecture in a weak-coupling regime of the paraxial approximation.\n \nThe paraxial approximation is a high frequency approximation of the Helmholtz equation\, where backscattering is ignored. This takes the form of a Schrödinger equation with a random potential and is often used to model laser propagation through turbulence. In particular\, I will describe a diffusive scaling where the limiting probability distribution of the wavefield is completely described by a second moment which follows an anomalous diffusion. The proof relies on the asymptotic closeness of statistical moments of the wavefield under the paraxial approximation\, its white noise limit and the complex Gaussian distribution itself.  An additional stochastic continuity/tightness criterion allows to show the convergence of these distributions over spaces of Hölder-continuous functions. Numerical simulations illustrate theoretical results.\n \nThis is joint work with Guillaume Bal.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - How does density dependence affect evolutionary rescue\, and how does an evolutionary ecologist shift university culture and climate? A tale of two roles
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary - I’ll present on two topics. First\, I’ll discuss experiments on evolutionary rescue\, which is adaptation that enables a population to persist and grow following detrimental environmental change. Using Tribolium beetles as a model system\, we evaluated how density dependence reduce the probability of rescue\, but do not inhibit adaptation of populations that persist. Second\, I’ll discuss Colorado State University’s NSF ADVANCE grant\, and how as an evolutionary ecologist I’ve been able to shed light on university data to reveal low retention of faculty women of color relative to other groups of faculty members. I’ll then discuss the kinds of programming we have put in place to improve recruitment and retention and overall success of faculty members to reduce the gaps the data reveal\, and how we used the ADVANCE grant to leverage university resources and structures in ways that should have lasting impact.

DESCRIPTION:Understanding protein-ligand interactions at the molecular level is critical for elucidating disease mechanisms and enabling early diagnosis of conditions such as cancer\, neurological disorders\, and neurodegenerative diseases. This seminar will highlight recent work in our lab in the areas of molecular recognition\, characterization of protein binding\, and biomarker detection using the label-free technique of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Our research integrates biomimetic interface engineering\, novel plasmonic sensing schemes\, and machine learning-based data analysis to address complex analytical challenges. We employ supported lipid bilayers to investigate protein interactions under relevant conditions\, including curved membrane geometries. A glycolipid microarray platform for SPR imaging will be presented for the detection of multiple sclerosis biomarkers\, where machine learning algorithms were used to resolve cross-reactivity issues that hinder diagnostic specificity. Additional topics will include new chip designs\, 3D-printed optical components\, and the use of unconventional aluminum substrates in the Kretschmann configuration for enhanced sensing. Finally\, plasmonic film-enhanced laser desorption ionization process for single cell analysis will be discussed.

You will hear from two of our Senior Principals about how we apply “Moneyball” to develop access strategies for pharmaceutical clients. Why Moneyball? Don’t worry\, we aren’t looking for candidates with backgrounds in sports\,reading Michael Lewis novels or indulging in Brad Pitt movies. In the early 2000s\, the Oakland Athletics baseball team implemented enhanced statistical insights to understand the real value of players\, as opposed to “old-school” approaches that are outdated\, subjective and often flawed. Using enhanced insights\, the A’s remained a competitive baseball team despite having limited funds to pay high-value players and managers – their unique approach to gain deeper insights about players had ushered in anera of new thinking to the game. These enhanced insights are now a necessity to “play ball” across industries.In our world of healthcare\, ongoing changes in patient insurance coverage\, increasing industry consolidation\, and the growth in expensive transformative therapeutics continue to challenge the life sciences landscape. These changes at a macro-level have ripple effects across the industry. For example\, the aging of theUS is leading to approximately 15 M people enrolling in Medicare over thenext ten years\, but this impact is likely to be greater in specific states. Furthermore\, the growth in high deductibles continue to drive higher costs across the landscape of various treatment options.We support our clients by developing “Moneyball”-like solutions to provide betterinsights for our clients to adapt to a demanding market. Payer restrictions and high costs represent critical barriers to patients accessing the therapies they need. Health insurers restrict patient access to therapies that carry less value for them\, and insurance plans often require high patient cost-sharing\, posing puzzles for us to solve. We use the power of healthcare data to help manufacturers measure the impact of market access on brand performance and the cascading influence this has on how prescribers and patients gain access to innovative therapies. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Roberto Lugo
DESCRIPTION:Roberto Lugo creates defiant genre-mixing works that confront the function and subject matter of high art objects from Classical Antiquity\, East Asia\, the Italian Renaissance\, seventeenth-century Europe\, and beyond. Using the ancient medium of clay as his canvas\, Lugo draws attention to intergenerational experiences of racial injustice while honoring African American and Latino culture.\nCeramics hold particular significance for Lugo due to their deep anthropological context. Over the course of history\, finely-crafted ceramic objects stood as a symbol of class\, privilege\, and the aristocracy. Lugo intervenes in these histories\, and countless more\, to create a new mode of storytelling that blends narrative and portraiture with cross-disciplinary techniques and time-honored forms in order to introduce those notably absent from the art historical canon. The result is distinctive works in clay unified by Lugo’s call for representation.\nRoberto Lugo holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Penn State. His work has been featured in exhibitions at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art\, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York\, among others. He is the recipient of numerous awards\, including a 2019 Pew Fellowship\, the Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon Polsky Rome Prize\, a US Artists Award\, and\, most recently\, the Heinz Award for the Arts. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\; Philadelphia Museum of Art\; High Museum of Art\; Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\; Brooklyn Museum\; Metropolitan Museum of Art\; Walters Art Museum\; and more.\nPresented with support from the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan.\nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS\, ALL ARTS\, and PBS Books. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, September 18 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. for the opening receptions of Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project and Untold Stories\, Part II at Stamps Gallery.\n\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery.
