DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Deep learning has had a significant impact on both science and society due to its successful application of data-driven artificial intelligence. One of the key characteristics of deep learning is that its accuracy improves with an increase in the model size and the amount of training data. This feature has notably enhanced state-of-the-art learning architectures across various fields over the past decade.  However\, the lack of a solid mathematical and statistical foundation has restricted the development of deep learning to specific applications and has hindered its broader\, high-confidence implementation.  This foundational gap becomes particularly evident when deep learning is applied to statistical  estimation and inference\, especially with limited training sample sizes. To address this issue\, we aim to develop a statistically principled framework and theory that can validate the application of deep learning and support the creation of interpretable models. Our approach is grounded in Bayesian statistical theory and methodology\, as well as scalable computation. We will demonstrate our methods across a wide range of applications.

DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. DESCRIPTION:CREES is delighted to support the international art exhibition Between Voice and Silence. Dedicated to the fallen Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov\, the exhibit’s title is borrowed from one of his poems. Exploring the role of empathy and humanity in the times of crisis\, Ukrainian and American artists Katya Lisova (textiles)\, Matvii Vaisberg (prints)\, and Ira Bondarenko (ceramics) reflect on the power and limits of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\n\nThe exhibition\, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan’s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5\, 2025\, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Domesticated: Unlocking inter-species integration via biomolecules
DESCRIPTION:Over the last two decades\, archaeological research across north-central Asia has led to a clarification of the timing of the introduction of domesticated animals and plants. As economies in this region shifted from foraging to the use of ruminant livestock\, to horse dairying and riding\, and finally to the cultivation of grains\, these marked major thresholds in human history. As part of my forthcoming book\, a new model is proposed for the stages of integration of cultivated species into societies—from the initial introduction of domesticated animals or plants to their acceptance\, solidification or complete incorporation\, and finally intensification. The delineation of these varied stages depends on novel biomolecular techniques to refine these broader narratives\, including proteomics\, ancient DNA\, and isotopic analyses. Resulting findings suggest that there were multiple trajectories and timelines for cooperation between species\, as domestic species were integrated into societies there were shifts in landscape use\, knowledge systems\, and the structures of social systems that encompassed cultivated species.

It\, however\, extends beyond colonial conceits by offering a contrapuntal story by following a U.S. anthropologist conducting fieldwork among a Bagobo community in the Davao Gulf of Mindananao and the knowledge of weavers this anthropologist obtained. Combined\, the narratives present vernaculars of plant knowing within and outside of botany's disciplinary bounds and their transformations found within colonial agricultural expansion. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:From Purity to Ambidexterity: The Moralization of Intrinsic Motivation and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:“Why do you work?” It’s one of the most familiar questions we face\, posed by employers\, friends\, and sometimes even by ourselves. My dissertation shows that work motivation is more than just a reason for working\; it also carries moral weight. People often view intrinsic motivation—working for the inherent satisfaction of the task—as a marker of moral worth\, using it to judge others and to signal their own values. In contrast\, external rewards such as money or recognition are frequently viewed with suspicion and distaste. Yet despite the common belief that intrinsic and extrinsic motivations are opposites\, most of us are driven by both. If mixed motivation is common\, an important question is how people manage the coexistence of multiple motives. My current research explores this through the concept of motivational ambidexterity. Defined as the capacity to balance different types of motivation\, I theorize about where motivational ambidexterity comes from and how it influences employees’ pursuit of meaningful and effective work.

DESCRIPTION:Autonomous vehicles have long promised significant benefits to society in terms of safety\, economic productivity\, convenience\, and improvements in the quality of living for those unable to drive. Costly ups and downs have unfortunately been numerous along this promised pathway to a revolution in transportation. This talk will highlight the challenges and opportunities to make autonomous vehicles safe and scalable\, while offering the view that the solutions need to take a macroscopic view that is larger than a single domain\, like artificial intelligence. The presentation will discuss how Carnegie Mellon University tackles the essential safety\, cost\, and scalability necessities for deploying autonomous consumer passenger vehicles.\n---\nAbout the speaker: Professor Ragunathan \"Raj\" Rajkumar is the George Westinghouse Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and of Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University\, where he directs the Safety21\, the US DOT National University Transportation Center\, and the Metro21 Smart Cities Institute. He is considered a pioneer in autonomous driving technologies\, and led the General Motors-Carnegie Mellon Connected and Autonomous Driving Collaborative Research Laboratory from 2004-20. He was on the Executive Committee that oversaw the CMU Tartan Racing team that won the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge\, and also led its Systems Engineering group. He has authored one book\, edited another book and holds four US patents. Nine of his publications have received Best Paper Awards. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors\, an IEEE Fellow\, a co-recipient of the IEEE Simon Ramo Medal\, and an ACM Distinguished Engineer. He received the Outstanding Technical Achievement and Leadership Award by the IEEE Technical Committee on Real-Time Systems. Prof Rajkumar’s work has influenced many commercial real-time operating systems. He was also the founder of TimeSys that commercialized real-time versions of Linux and Ottomatika Inc that delivered the software intelligence for self-driving vehicles. TimeSys was acquired by Lynx and Ottomatika was acquired by Delphi\, now Motional. His research interests include all aspects of cyber-physical systems with a particular emphasis on connected and autonomous vehicles. His work has been covered globally in print\, on TV\, online and on radio.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  The motion of undulating\, flexible “tails\"  in a fluid environment is a common element in many biological systems\, from sperm movement in reproduction to fish swimming in the ocean. This talk will focus on two collaborative projects where computational fluid dynamics has shed some light on fundamental mechanisms. At the microscale\, we will consider the journey of extremely long and flexible insect flagella through narrow and tortuous female reproductive tracts. At the macroscale\, we will probe the neuromechanics and fluid dynamics of the lamprey\, the most primitive vertebrate and\, hence\, a model organism in neuroscience. Using a closed-loop model that couples neural signaling\, muscle mechanics\, fluid dynamics\, and sensory feedback\, we examine the hypothesis that amplified proprioceptive feedback could restore effective locomotion in lampreys with spinal injuries.\n\nContact:  Danny Forger

This is the tropical world. In this talk\, I will tell a story about tropical linear spaces\, where many familiar incidence properties of classical linear geometry fail in surprising ways. DESCRIPTION:The QCD axion is well-studied as a solution to the Strong CP problem and a dark matter candidate. At the same time\, one often hears that axions are ubiquitous in top-down string theory models of particle physics. I will discuss how both bottom-up and top-down considerations favor axion models where the axion is a mode of a higher-dimensional gauge field. I will provide a viewpoint on why the existence of axions could follow from general principles of quantum gravity\, and what we might expect the QCD axion's properties to be.

DESCRIPTION:The production and utilization of oxygen supports most life on the modern Earth. Indeed\, most modern animals need quite elevated amounts and would not survive in the Earth’s atmosphere 700 million years ago. In this talk I will trace the key developments in the history of atmospheric oxygen on Earth. These developments will be placed in the context of the evolving biosphere with a focus on interactions between oxygen and Eukaryote evolution. I will place special emphasis on the evolution of early animals and use physiological experiments to constrain how their evolution was impacted by the history of oxygen. I will also discuss how sponges cycle oxygen internally\, providing possible clues as to how animals have evolved to both cope with and exploit the elevated levels of atmospheric oxygen we enjoy today.

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 19\, 5-7 pm.  Parking free.\n\nCathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

A great opportunity for SMTD students\; shakuhachis and kotos will be provided for musicians to try out themselves and with singers.\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTISTS\n\nMusician and musicologist David Kansuke Wheeler spent twenty years in Japan studying and performing the shakuhachi with traditional masters and ensembles\, beginning in Tokyo in 1977 under Kinko ryū master Junsuke Kawase III (Kansuke I). In 2008\, in recognition of three decades of performing\, producing\, and teaching\, he received the performance name Kansuke II. Wheeler has played a central role in every major world shakuhachi festival since 1994. In 1999\, he co-founded the Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies\, which held its 26th camp in June 2024. Now based in Boulder\, he aims to cross musical and artistic barriers both within and outside of the Japanese traditional performing arts world.\n\nYoko Hiraoka is a senior master performer of koto (13-string zither)\, shamisen (3-string lute)\, biwa (4- or 5-string lute)\, and voice. Born in Kyoto\, she studied Ikuta-ryū koto and shamisen music from an early age\, earning the Dai-Shihan (Grand Master) title from Sōmei Ongaku-kai\, Tokyo. She also studied Chikuzen biwa with Kōka Suga\, a prominent leader of Kōmyōji-ryū and disciple of Yamazaki Kyokusui\, the Living National Treasure. DESCRIPTION:This event brings together curator Dana Miller and poet and art critic John Yau for a special Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series event exploring the histories of Carmen Herrera and Leon Polk Smith\, two groundbreaking artists of American abstraction. Miller and Yau will discuss the way each artist’s very different path converged to form a sustaining friendship and dive into Herrera and Smith’s work on view in the UMMA exhibition Both Sides of the Line. Despite forging a creative dialogue that spanned decades\, their work has never been presented side-by-side at this scale\, until now.\n\nDana Miller\, guest curator of the UMMA exhibition\, is an art historian and independent curator based in Seattle. Previously she was the DeMartini Family Curator and Director of the Collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York\, where she worked for two decades. Among her many projects there were major exhibitions and catalogues devoted to Jay DeFeo\, Buckminster Fuller\, and Claes Oldenburg. In 2016 she curated Carmen Herrera: Lines of Sight\, the artist’s first museum exhibition in New York City in twenty years. She has also contributed to the publications Carmen Herrera: Estructuras (2021)\, Leon Polk Smith: Endless Space (2019)\, and Leon Polk Smith: Hiding in Plain Sight (2021). At the Whitney\, Miller curated numerous collection installations\, including co-curating America is Hard to See\, which inaugurated the Whitney’s downtown building in 2015. She also edited the accompanying 432-page publication\, Handbook of the Collection. She has written and lectured on artists ranging from Ruth Asawa and Felix Gonzalez-Torres to Isamu Noguchi and Edward Hopper. Miller graduated Magna Cum Laude from Duke University and received her master’s from Columbia University\, where she studied for her Ph.D. in Art History. \n\nJohn Yau is a poet who has been publishing reviews and essays on art and literature since 1978. He has authored and contributed to numerous monographs\, including Joe Brainard: The Art of the Personal\, Liu Xiaodong\, Thomas Nozkowski\, Catherine Murphy\, John Pai: Liquid Steel\, Richard Artschwager: Into the Desert\, A Thing Among Things: The Art of Jasper Johns\, and Joan Mitchell: Works on Paper 1956–1992. He was the recipient of the 2017 Jackson Prize in Poetry\, and his recent books of poetry include Tell It Slant (2023) and Genghis Chan on Drums (2021). Since 2012\, his weekly reviews have appeared in the online magazine\, Hyperallergic. He received a 2019 Rabkin Prize for his art criticism and a 2024 American Book Award for his book of essays\, Please Wait by the Coatroom: Reconsidering Race and Identity in American Art. Yau is the author of Leon Polk Smith: Constellations (2018) and a contributor to the exhibition catalogue Both Sides of the Line: Carmen Herrera &amp\; Leon Polk Smith. He is a Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University and lives in Beacon\, New York.\n\nBoth Sides of the Line: Carmen Herrera & Leon Polk Smith is on view at UMMA August 30\, 2025 - January 4\, 2026. With over a decade of national touring experience\, Brown is no stranger to the stage and delivers every performance with personality and enigmatic charm. A true disciple of the style\, Brown has spent countless hours immersing himself in the language of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche\, and he’s joined on stage by bandmates that match his skill and passion for the material. The core group includes Tyler Rindo on clarinet\, Nick Martin on rhythm guitar\, and Jorian Olk-Szost on upright bass.
