It\u2019s a course where, per the syllabus, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying, exploring, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice\u2014how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art & Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building, and the creative possibilities ahead. Typically, greater co-rumination is associated with more intrapersonal costs (e.g., negative affect) and interpersonal benefits (e.g., closeness), indicative of what is known as the \u201ctrade-off hypothesis.\u201d While research establishing the costs and benefits associated with co-rumination has been formative, our understanding of co-rumination can be enhanced by embracing its dyadic and social nature. Through a social psychological lens, our team paves a way forward by offering a new theoretical conceptualization with which to view co-rumination that emphasizes the need to explicitly examine the dyadic and social nature of co-rumination and to reconsider what are \u201ccosts\u201d and \u201cbenefits\u201d of co-rumination based on the social context in which it is embedded. I will review how our research team got to these theoretical points by discussing findings from 7 studies and 1,511 individuals. After, I will outline our future directions using this theoretical reconceptualization of co-rumination. We hope this work may help us to better understand difficult and upsetting conversations with close others, ultimately improving recommendations for how individuals seek and provide support through challenging times.\r\n\r\nAbout the Series:\r\n\r\nHumans are social animals and from the earliest days of life, are dependent on the quality of social relationships with significant others: family, kin, friends, and a growing social network of online acquaintances. But, how do we conduct research and come to understand the social processes transpiring in these significant social connections with others? What are the consequences for individual development and mental health outcomes of having close intimate relationships in one\u2019s life? There is also a darker side to some relationships in the form of violence, aggression, and conflict. How do we study these processes? The quantum ecosystem is inherently hybrid, with quantum devices tightly coupled to classical hardware and software.
