DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

DESCRIPTION:The Office of Campus Sustainability\, The U-M Medical School\, and the Planet Blue Ambassador Program are hosting a “Sustainable Lab Day” in the Hill Medical Complex (MSRBs\, Med Scis\, Cancer Center) on September 23rd to try and reduce barriers for labs looking to become sustainably certified. The sustainable lab certification helps labs reduce their energy and waste\, make greener pruchases\, and practice green chemistry. Prior to the event\, labs need to complete the baseline certification application form. Then they can sign up for a lab site visit to review improvements as well as attend a Planet Blue Ambassador training with their lab mates. Free pizza will be available during the training. Lastly\, there will be a table outside of Taubman Library JavaBlue from 9am-2pm with sustainability information\, giveaways\, and snacks!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Linocuts by Meredith Stern
DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. DESCRIPTION:Join the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Vida Maralani\, Associate Professor of Sociology\, Cornell University. Dr. Maralani is a sociologist and demographer who studies social inequality and how it comes about. She has topical expertise in gender\, education\, work outcomes\, child investment\, and health disparities.\n\nAbstract: “Perceptions of discrimination based on social categories such as gender and race are an important part of understanding inequality and social stratification. This study asks two questions: (1) What types of experiences do individuals perceive as discriminatory in federal Title IX claims filed against universities\, and how do these vary by gender and race? (2) Why do people perceive these experiences or interactions as discriminatory? We answer these questions using an original dataset constructed from 1\,363 Title IX claims filed with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) between 1994 and 2014. Findings highlight how individuals interpret and contest experiences and interactions in university settings\, and show how routine parts of academic life\, when situated in specific contexts\, can activate perceptions of discrimination in postsecondary environments.”

DESCRIPTION:Talk 1. Fluorine Chemistry with Global Challenges in Mind\nTalk 2. Fluorination under Hydrogen Bonding Phase-transfer Catalysis\n\nTalk 1 Abstract: Fluorochemicals are key for fundamental and applied sciences including applications in medicine\, agrochemistry and material science. The first global challenge that will be discussed in this lecture is the continuous necessity for new diagnostic agents and medicines\, and how our programme on 18F-Radiochemistry for Positron Emission Tomography Imaging can accelerate innovation. The challenges facing the fluorochemical industry will be presented next\, calling for the invention of safe and sustainable manufacturing processes. Specifically\, this lecture will present new pathways to reinvent fluorine chemistry with methodologies that convert fluorspar into critically needed fluorine-containing molecules applying operationally simple and energy- effective methods that bypass the production of dangerous hydrogen fluoride. \n\nTalk 2 Abstract: The economic impact of catalysis is significant contributing 30–40% of global GDP. In this context\, phase-transfer catalysis is a powerful manifold for asymmetric synthesis. Chiral cationic or anionic PTC strategies have enabled a variety of transformations\, yet studies on the use of insoluble inorganic salts as nucleophiles for the synthesis of enantioenriched molecules have remained elusive. A long-standing challenge is the development of methods for asymmetric carbon–fluorine bond formation from cost-effective alkali metal fluorides. In this lecture\, we will describe in details how hydrogen-bond donor catalysts can provide a solution to enantioselective nucleophilic fluorination through controlled fluoride binding.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibition. \"Between Voice and Silence\"
DESCRIPTION:CREES is delighted to support the international art exhibition Between Voice and Silence. Dedicated to the fallen Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov\, the exhibit’s title is borrowed from one of his poems. Exploring the role of empathy and humanity in the times of crisis\, Ukrainian and American artists Katya Lisova (textiles)\, Matvii Vaisberg (prints)\, and Ira Bondarenko (ceramics) reflect on the power and limits of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\n\nThe exhibition\, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan’s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5\, 2025\, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. See information below: \n\nSpeaker 1: Jiachen Li\, master's student\, Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics\, Zhang Lab\n\nTitle: Chance and necessity in evolution: how repeatable is phenotypic evolution?\nDescription:  Assessing the relative roles of chance and necessity in evolution is of wide interest\, but it  requires evolving the same population under the same environment multiple times—a virtually impossible task in nature that has been repeatedly accomplished in the laboratory. Capitalizing on the transcriptome data  collected from experimental evolution of replicated populations spanning distinct environments\, I investigate the evolutionary repeatability of hundreds of thousands of gene expression traits in a prokaryotic and five eukaryotic species.\n\n\nSpeaker 2: Dr. Yang Li\, EEB Postdoctoral Fellow\, Zhang Lab.\n\nTitle: Navigability of thousands of adaptive landscapes of RNA and protein expressions by trans-regulatory mutations\nDescription: Gene expression evolution relies on regulatory mutations. Past studies showed that optimizing gene expression by positive selection on cis-regulatory mutations is relatively easy because the corresponding adaptive landscapes are quite smooth\, but a comparable study of trans-regulatory mutations is lacking. Analyzing the transcriptomes and proteomes of 16 yeast strains carrying all combinations of four auxotrophic mutations\, we respectively construct 5\,923 and 446 adaptive landscapes of mRNA and protein expressions where neighboring genotypes differ by a trans-regulatory mutation. We find that mRNA expression is less optimizable by trans- than cis-mutations\, which may partially explain why trans-changes are rarer than cis-changes in gene expression evolution. Interestingly\, the protein expression landscapes are substantially more navigable than the mRNA expression landscapes\, suggesting that\, for protein-coding genes\, the evolvability of gene expression is even higher than the current estimate from adaptive landscapes of mRNA expression. This high evolvability may have contributed to the prominence of gene expression changes as a mechanism of evolutionary adaptation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Meanings of Zero: The Performative Logic of China’s Zero-COVID Policy
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/9py49\n\nChina’s “zero-COVID policy” (“qingling zhengce”) has provoked global debates\, but the existing social scientific literature on the COVID crisis has paid more attention to the implementation of the policy than the “elephant in the room”\, the policy itself\, including its origin\, evolvement\, and underlying political logic. Dr. Xu adopts the “performative approach” to address this gap in a study as part of his ongoing book project about disaster politics in China. Xu argues that the “zero-COVID” policy was not an exception but a case that represented China’s public policy paradigm\, especially its strong state image and its general goal to eliminate social problems—hence\, “zero”. The zero goal was intensified rather than altered in various state actors’ reactions to changing situations during the pandemic period\, but it was eventually botched due to its high economic\, political\, and social costs. This analysis provides a new approach to public policies and crisis responses in China and beyond by emphasizing the performative aspect\, that is\, as symbolic and expressive actions to project the state’s self-images in front of various audiences.\n   \n   Bin Xu is Professor of Sociology at Emory University. His research interests are the intersection between politics and culture\, including civil society\, collective memory\, symbolic politics\, and disaster. He is the author of *The Culture of Democracy: A Sociological Approach to Civil Society (Polity 2022)\, Chairman Mao’s Children: Generation and the Politics of Memory in China* (Cambridge 2021)\, and *The Politics of Compassion: the Sichuan Earthquake and Civic Engagement in China* (Stanford 2017). His articles have appeared in leading journals in sociology and China studies. He is currently working on two book projects: one is about mourning and memorialization of the COVID pandemic\, and the other is about disaster politics in China.

DESCRIPTION:Cultural ecosystem services (CES) – or the non-material benefits that result from human relationships with the environment – support and maintain place-based values\, worldviews\, cultural identity\, and well-being. Given their potential to reveal relationships between human and environmental well-being\, the inclusion of CES in natural resource planning and decision making processes is critical to successful long-term application of stewardship and management strategies. Despite being one of four main categories of ecosystem services\, CES are not often assessed due to a range of theoretical and practical gaps in identification and evaluation methods.\n\nThis project addressed the need to fill these knowledge gaps by establishing a sustainable network of CES practitioners that support each other\, engage others through their CES experiences\, and share approaches for identifying and working within the unique socio-ecological contexts present across the Reserve System. In this webinar\, the project team will showcase three examples from their new Resource Guide that highlight how Reserves have engaged with CES across all sectors through internship and fellowship experiences\, research protocols\, and evaluation.\n\nPlease note: The duration of this webinar has been extended by 15 minutes to accommodate additional Q&A time at the end of the session.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk and meet-and-greet\, Erie Meyer will be discussing the role of data in the Federal Government. She will be sharing insights from her own career: as the chief technologist at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)\, and as co-founder of the United States Digital Service (USDS\, now renamed \"DOGE'\"). This event will be open to the UM community\, including faculty\, students\, and postdocs.\n\nBiography\n\nErie Meyer is a Senior Fellow at the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator and the Georgetown Institute for Tech and Society where she focuses on the intersection of technology\, artificial intelligence\, and regulation. She has spent her career modernizing government services and working to enforce the law against corporate repeat offenders. \n\nMost recently\, she served as Chief Technologist and Senior Advisor to the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)\, where she helped lead efforts to address Big Tech’s lurch into financial services\, and was part of the original team that launched the agency. There\, she helped set up the consumer complaint system and release open data. Before returning to the CFPB\, Ms. Meyer served as Chief Technologist and Director of Policy Planning for FTC Chair Lina Khan\, and was Technology Advisor to then-Commissioner Rohit Chopra. \n\nShe also co-founded and wrote the first line of code at the U.S. Digital Service at the White House. Earlier\, she was a Senior Advisor to the U.S. Chief Technology Officer in the White House\, a Senior Director at Code for America\, and a Shorenstein Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School. Ms. Meyer began her public service in the Ohio Attorney General’s Office during the financial crisis\, building open-source tools to help protect Ohioans' consumer rights. She holds a B.A. in journalism and government from American University and is a contributor to open source software. She is the 2025 recipient of the EFF Award for Protecting Americans' Data\, and a proud mom.

DESCRIPTION:The Ending Lamination Conjecture was one of the central problems in the theory of 3-manifolds and its resolution in the 2000s by Brock–Canary–Minsky stands as a milestone in the classification of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The proof required a deep understanding of the space of ending laminations and combined a wide range of ideas and techniques\, many of which continue to play a crucial role across current research areas. \n\nIn this reading seminar\, we will study the topological properties of the space of ending laminations\, following Gabai’s 2008 paper [1]. DESCRIPTION:Amy Chavasse will discuss their nine-month collaborative project\, supported by the Center for World Performance Studies\, exploring the evolution of Contact Improvisation (CI) in Argentina – where it arose after the dictatorship’s end in 1985 – as a lens for examining democracy\, resistance\, and artmaking amid social upheaval. Or is with whom more important?\nCan you just do what your PhD advisor does?\n\nPlease join us for a conversation with EARTH alumni who have served as Department Chair at Research-1 (R1) universities and led the search for and hiring of several dozen early career faculty. \n\n*Please note: this event is geared towards graduate students\, but all are welcome!\n\nTracy Frank runs a research and teaching program focused on carbonate sedimentology and petrography\, low temperature geochemistry\, paleoclimate\, and paleoceanography with a special interest in mass extinctions. She spent two years at Penn State as an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow before moving to her first faculty position at the University of Queensland in Australia. She then moved to the University of Nebraska where she was Rosowski Professor and Chair. Tracy is now department chair at the University of Connecticut. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Ireland in 2019.\n\nJohn Geissman runs a research and teaching program focused on the structural evolution of the Basin and Range Province\, Triassic paleomagnetism and magnetostratigraphy of the Colorado Plateau\, and deformation in the Himalaya. John spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto before starting his faculty career at the Colorado School of Mines. He then moved to the University of New Mexico and was department chair at the University of Texas at Dallas. John served as President of the Geological Society of America in 2011-2012 and in various advisory roles for the National Science Foundation.

With her OSHEN she merges a literary writing style and folk-rock Americana sound to create rich and emotionally complex music. DESCRIPTION:Award-winning songwriting\n\nJared Deck has been praised for his \"powerful\, beautiful voice\" by Alejandro Escovedo. Raised on the dusty plains of an Oklahoma family farm\, Jared worked in the fields as well as the town grocery\, owned by his parents. Later he worked in an oilfield and a factory. During the Great Recession he got by with a job as a pianist in a Black church\, where over the next six years\, he received an unparalleled musical education. His songs tell stories in an honest voice of Midland America. \"The American Dream\" won first place in the annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival Songwriting Competition. \n\nMike Vial is a singer-songwriter and educator based in Ann Arbor. He won the Ypsilanti Songwriting Festival award in 2010 and the Blue Owl Songwriting award in 2014. He teaches at Community High School.

DESCRIPTION:An electroacoustic soundscape\n\nThe Myriad Project is a Michigan-based\, emerging electroacoustic chamber music group made of oboe\, bassoon\, and electric violin with loop station. The ensemble creates a unique sound that mixes together the colorful\, more traditionally classical timbres of oboe and bassoon\, with the more modern sound of the electric violin\, and the immersive textures created by the loop station.  Myriad Project performances are characterized by imaginative sound worlds\, innovative techniques and fun concert experiences for audiences.
