DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate.  This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS FACULTY EXCLUSIVE!\n\nSign up for a two-hour work session\, followed by a hot lunch with colleagues. The Faculty On-Campus Work Retreats offer a quiet space to work with other scholars and artists\, and an opportunity for you to prioritize your research and creative work by committing to one or two work sessions before teaching\, service\, and email take over the semester. Lunch\, after the work session\, is a chance to share interests and work with other colleagues\, to learn about each others’ research\, to grow professional and social networks\, and to experience the University as a collective.\n\nThe Work Retreats are open to all ~7\,600 members of the Faculty Senate\, including tenure-track professors\, lecturers\, research faculty\, clinical faculty\, librarians\, archivists\, and curators. The series was developed by the Faculty Senate Office\, is supported by the Office of the Provost\, and is co-sponsored by Librarian Mary Lawrence.\n\nThe retreats officially run from 10-1 (10-12 for quiet work time and 12-1 for lunch). SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the art of judging books by their covers! This exhibit highlights a selection of rare books from the University of Michigan's collections\, each of them representing binding topics featured in \"Suave Mechanicals\,\" the acclaimed nine-volume series dedicated to the study of the art and history of bookbinding.  \n\nSpanning from 2013 to 2025\, \"Suave Mechanicals\" contains 85 essays\, 27 of which examine the same type of binding as the artifacts on display. Edited by Julia Miller and published by Cathleen A. Baker of The Legacy Press\, the series was conceived as a platform for fresh\, in-depth scholarship on bookbinding\, from its earliest origins to contemporary practice.  \n\nContributors include first-time authors and established experts — bookbinders\, conservators\, librarians\, curators\, catalogers\, book artists\, collectors\, and historians — offering a vibrant array of voices and insights into the craftsmanship\, culture\, and enduring fascination of bookbinding.\n\nJoin us for Coffee with the Curator on October 1\, 10am-12pm.

DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)\nPhase 1 Curatorial Statement\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Amelia Burns (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Erin McKenna (courtyard pillar)\nArtists Amelia Burns and Erin McKenna reimagine the Division Street pillars through digital collages rooted in memory\, landscape and shared environments. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. Her process follows personal rules:\nno hierarchy of materialssubvert expected usecomplicate binaries\, stereotypes and associationsmisuse\, misapplyallow for variable arrangementsrepeat\, reiterate\, reuseconsider the subversive possibilities of the excessive\, fantastic\, and necessaryalways let the labor be visible\nMcKenna earned her BFA from Columbus College of Art &amp\; Design in 2012 and later completed her MFA at Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan. DESCRIPTION:CREES is delighted to support the international art exhibition Between Voice and Silence. Dedicated to the fallen Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov\, the exhibit’s title is borrowed from one of his poems. Exploring the role of empathy and humanity in the times of crisis\, Ukrainian and American artists Katya Lisova (textiles)\, Matvii Vaisberg (prints)\, and Ira Bondarenko (ceramics) reflect on the power and limits of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\n\nThe exhibition\, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan’s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5\, 2025\, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Living on the edge: a non perturbative resolution to the negativity of bulk entropies
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will discuss two entropic puzzles in JT gravity and their resolution\, which requires taking into account non-perturbative effects in the gravitational path integral. In JT gravity\, which is dual to a random matrix ensemble\, the gravitational thermal entropy becomes negative at very low temperatures. This puzzle arises when computing the annealed (instead of quenched) entropy\, corresponding to an incorrect averaging procedure in the dual matrix model. After defining an “intermediate” quantity\, the semi-quenched entropy\, I will explain how the positivity of entropy can be rescued. From the bulk perspective\, both a resummation of higher-genus topologies and wormhole effects are crucial. From the matrix model perspective\, the resolution relies on the statistics of eigenvalues near the edge\, governed\, in different regimes\, by the Airy distribution or by 1-eigenvalue instantons. A related puzzle arises where the entanglement entropy across a two-sided black hole can become negative when inserting a large number of matter excitations behind the black hole horizon. First posed by Lin\, Maldacena\, Rosenberg\, and Shan in two-sided BPS black holes in SUSY JT gravity\, I will show this paradox extends to non-SUSY JT gravity with matter as well and demonstrate how positivity is rescued in both cases. Finally\, I will discuss a tensor network toy model with the same features.

His recent book uncovers a suppressed chapter of Italian Fascism\, challenging Eurocentric scholarship and official memory in Libya\, Italy\, and the U.S. Through multilingual fieldwork across three continents\, he redefines how colonial violence and its silences are studied. This work offers a new paradigm for understanding genocide\, memory\, and modern North African history.\n\nAli Abdullatif Ahmida\, a Libyan-born scholar and founding chair of Political Science at the University of New England\, focuses on power\, resistance\, and colonial violence in North Africa. He is the author of The Making of Modern Libya and the award-winning Genocide in Libya: Shar\, A Hidden Colonial History (2021). DESCRIPTION:Video and sound installation artist Toni Meštrović\, a Roman J. Witt short term Visiting Artist-in-Residence at the Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design\, will give a presentation on his work on Wednesday\, September 23 at 2 p.m. in room 1258 of the Art &amp\; Architecture building (with support from the Arts Initiative Course Connections program).\nMeštrović holds a degree in Graphic Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb\, as well as a diploma in Media Art from the Academy of Media Arts\, Cologne\, and studied Video/Digital Imaging with Valie Export at the International Summer Academy for Contemporary Art in Salzburg. Video\, sound\, and audio-visual installations produced during Meštrović's postgraduate studies explore his personal perception of the sea and the island where he grew up. Recent projects involve transforming eccentric sites from tunnels in Croatia's capital to the space underneath a civic theater into instruments and sonic spaces. Meštrović lives in Rijeka and Kaštela\, and is Professor at the Arts Academy University of Split in the Department of Film and Video.

DESCRIPTION:The proof of the Weil conjectures by Grothendieck and Deligne relies on the powerful machinery of étale cohomology. While étale cohomology provides deep structural insight\, it is not well-suited for explicit computations. In response\, a variety of p-adic cohomology theories have been developed that are better for calculations. In this talk\, I will introduce Monsky–Washnitzer cohomology\, establish some trace formulas\, and illustrate how p-adic methods can be used for effective computation of zeta functions of hyperelliptic curves and K3 surfaces.

DESCRIPTION:High-energy-density plasmas (HED) exist throughout our universe in an extreme state with temperatures greater than 10^5  K (~10 eV) and pressures greater than 10^6 atm (1 Mbar). On the largest scale\, such as in a supernova\, HED plasma systems can be billions of cm in size\; on the smaller end\, inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments at the National Ignition Facility can be one tenth of a cm.  Due to pressure\, density\, and velocity gradients in these systems\, several hydrodynamic processes can occur (Rayleigh-Taylor\, Richtmyer Meshkov and Kelvin Helmholtz) in both astrophysical systems and laboratory experiments creating complex structures or even turbulence across these vast scales. I will describe how laboratory experiments can be scaled to emulated hydrodynamic processes present in astrophysical systems and new techniques to diagnose sub-micron scales planned for the University of Michigan’s ZEUS laser relevant to fusion experiments.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nCells are not independent\; they communicate and work synergistically in the brain. Unlike traditional approaches that rely on bulk assays\, novel spatial technologies preserve the tissue's architecture at near single-cell resolution\, allowing for more precise functional interpretation of the cell types and states. In this talk\, I will introduce spatial proteomics and spatial epigenetics\, two leading methods that enable in situ detection of proteins and open chromatin. Compared to spatial transcriptomics\, spatial proteomics directly addresses key challenges in visualizing cellular morphology and evaluating whether RNAs are the best proxies for proteins. I will discuss how these approaches advance our understanding of brain function and disease\, particularly in psychiatric disorders and traumatic brain injury.\n\nShort Bio\n\nYang Xiao is a molecular pathologist and bioengineer working to understand the cellular changes in cerebral microenvironments following traumatic brain injury. Dr. Xiao’s research integrates spatial transcriptomic\, epigenomic\, and proteomic data to build a cellular “Google Map” of the brain\, and to uncover the gene regulatory control mechanisms involved in injury remodeling and mood disorders.\n\nDr. Xiao completed her undergraduate studies in Molecular Biology at McGill University in Canada\, and conducted her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Yale University under the mentorship of Dr. Rong Fan. She carried out postdoctoral work in Systems Neuroscience and Gene Editing at Columbia University\, working with Dr. Kam Leong.

DESCRIPTION:We study a principal-agent model involving a large population of heterogeneously interacting agents. By extending the existing methods\, we find the optimal contracts assuming a continuum of agents\, and show that\, when the number of agents is sufficiently large\, the optimal contracts for the problem with a continuum of agents are near-optimal for the finite agents problem. We make comparative statistics and provide numerical simulations to analyze how the agents' connectivity affects the principal's value\, the effort of the agents\, and the optimal contracts.\nJoint work with Erhan Bayraktar and Ibrahim Ekren.

In this talk\, I will present the transition probability of TASEP in half-space starting with a general deterministic initial condition. Applying the 1:2:3 KPZ scaling limit to this result yields an explicit formula for the half-space KPZ fixed point. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: Modeling Cancer Evolution: A Data-Driven Agent-Based Modeling Approach to Intratumor Heterogeneity and Drug Resistance in Melanoma
DESCRIPTION:Advances in multiregion sequencing have revealed extensive intratumor heterogeneity (ITH) — the presence of genetically distinct subclones within a single tumor. These findings support a branching evolution process (BEP)\, in which multiple subclonal lineages evolve in parallel from a common ancestor. ITH profoundly influences tumor behavior\, including hallmarks of cancer\, and growth and invasion phenotypes. It also underlies the emergence of therapeutic resistance\, as distinct subpopulations may harbor mutations that confer survival advantages. We have built a 2D\, multi-scale\, data-driven agent-based model (ABM) for BEP with Hallmark Integration (BEP-HI) that simulates melanoma evolution under the hallmarks of uncontrolled proliferation\, resistance to apoptosis\, immune evasion\, and genetic instability. The model is calibrated for BRAF-associated superficially spreading melanoma with the inclusion of key driver genes. We find three ITH regimes: clonal sweep (single dominant clone)\, subclonal sweep (multiple subclones cluster together)\, and fractal (high heterogeneity). We use cross-PCF to quantify spatial relations and find that the most aggressive clone closely clusters with the second most aggressive. Additionally\, we observe that immune cell density is higher in hot tumors than in cold tumors\, and shows opposing dynamics as base mutation rates increase. By integrating  differential equation models for the mechanisms of action of targeted BRAF inhibitors and anti-PD1 immunotherapy\, we aim to predict how ITH affects the onset of drug resistance\, and to use a virtual patient cohort to optimize combination therapy to overcome this resistance.

DESCRIPTION:Lecture Abstract: Can we bring together Persian poetry\, Georgian romance\, Shi'i ḥadīth collections\, Greek patriography\, Arabic conquest narrative\, Hebrew correspondence\, Syriac history\, and Armenian hagiography to the same page? What happens if we embrace the complexities of medieval sources and reject any single organizational schema such as academic field\, (discipline?) language\, chronology\, religion\, or genre? This talk presents an acentric and collagic model for thinking about medieval history\, shorn of ingrained modern hierarchies that we typically use to organize the past. It presents descriptions of medieval marriage to demonstrate the methodological opportunities of challenging linear organizational models. In particular\, it reveals what this type of history can offer to the field of Armenian studies\, moving past the liminality implied in the “between Byzantium and Islam” or “between Rome and Iran” paradigms.\n   \n   Speaker Bio: Alison M. DESCRIPTION:Your Optimism Is Not Required\, created and performed by Philadelphia's Team Sunshine Performance\, takes place at an intimate\, outdoor performance site encircling a campfire. Guided by two performers\, the audience comes to embody characters in the lives of Daughter and Dad: a fictional biracial teenager and her white father on a camping trip\, confronting futures shaped by climate change.\n\nInspired by renowned Buddhist ecologist Joanna Macy’s work Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re in Without Going Crazy\, Optimism is an original piece of participatory theater from Team Sunshine Performance that aims to move despair\, anxiety\, and hopelessness from immobilizing obstacles to animating forces of human connection.\n\nWHERE: Burns Park (1300 Baldwin Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48104)\n\nWHEN: September 23\, 24\, 25 at 7 PM\n\nRUN TIME: 75 minutes\, including a post-show discussion that leads to roasting marshmallows\, eating s'mores\, and hanging out around the campfire. \n\nIt's free and includes one s'more for each guest!

DESCRIPTION:New music!\n\nRon Sexsmith is a three time Juno award winning songwriter from Ontario\, Canada. He has written and recorded an extensive and acclaimed catalog of studio albums and original songs\, beginning with his self titled debut in 1995. Ron is set to release his eighteenth studio album\, Hangover Terrace\, this August. \n\nIn the past few decades as a headlining artist\, Ron has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world\, such as Massey Hall\, Carnegie Hall\, London’s Royal Albert Hall\, as well as The London Palladium. \n\nA child of melody\, his music has been described as a hybrid of Canadian folk heroes such as Gordon Lightfoot and Leonard Cohen mingled with that of The Kinks\, Beatles and other British invasion acts of his formative years. \nHis songs have been covered by many revered artists such as Rod Stewart\, kd Lang\, Emmylou Harris\, Michael Buble\, Feist\, Elvis Costello\, and Stevie Nicks to name only a few. \n\nIn 2017\, Ron penned his first novel ‘Deer Life\, A Fairy Tale’ published worldwide by Dundurn Press Limited. He has written a ‘yet to be released’ complete musical score to accompany the tale\, for his vision to bring the story to the stage as musical theatre or to adapt to film. Ron will be making his theatrical composer debut in 2025 with the internationally renowned Stratford Festival production of ‘As You Like It’ in Stratford\, Ontario\, Canada. He currently lives in Perth County\, Ontario with his wife\, his piano\, and his vinyl record collection and continues to be inspired to write\, record and perform live worldwide.

DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Department of Dance presents Vulture\, an MFA thesis performance directed by Scott Crandall. When a world ends\, does it leave behind a corpse? Vulture is an experimental\, partially improvised dance work that collapses and reforms. Dancers work their way through a detailed score to rupture through frames of performance\, togetherness\, and expectation. The production’s expansive design teeters between the surreal and the practical\, and the scenes onstage cycle between impersonal care\, disorientation\, and compulsion. \n\nChoreographer: Scott Crandall. Cast: Amelie Vidrio\, Kaitlyn Wilson\, Mia Brooks\, Kate Tsuruharatani\, Ladina Schaller\, and Anna Bodescu. Lighting Design: Jess Fialko. Set Design: Jenna Kirk. Costume Design: Maddy Rager. Scott Crandall (they/he) is a member of Thank You So Much For Coming\, a Detroit-based performance duo that creates hilarious and thoughtful performances about horrible beloved crumbling America with collaborator Maddy Rager. Scott also is a member of Play House Laboratories\, a nonprofit organization that manages Play House\, a studio\, rehearsal space\, and small-scale performance venue bringing high-quality\, experimental\, and family-friendly programming to Banglatown\, Detroit residents at little-to-no cost.
