DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate.  This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

Edited by Julia Miller and published by Cathleen A. DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. Free and open to the public.\n\nGUEST ARTIST BIO\n\nPianist SVETOZAR IVANOV has made numerous appearances as recitalist and orchestra soloist worldwide. Numerous publications have praised his recent solo CD’s\; the album *Naked Tango* was called “superbly original\, quite moving\, personal and musically absorbing” while his CD *Vers la flamme* was celebrated for performances which were “played with aplomb\, panache and complete conviction” and interpretation “filled with sensual longing\, anguished yearning\, anxious dread and provocative energy”. DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. Dedicated to the fallen Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov\, the exhibit’s title is borrowed from one of his poems. Exploring the role of empathy and humanity in the times of crisis\, Ukrainian and American artists Katya Lisova (textiles)\, Matvii Vaisberg (prints)\, and Ira Bondarenko (ceramics) reflect on the power and limits of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\n\nThe exhibition\, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan’s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5\, 2025\, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:How a novel class of protein misfolding is associated with changes in enzyme activity\, proteostasis\, aging\, and disease
DESCRIPTION:Utilizing simulations and experimental data\, my lab predicted the existence of a previously undiscovered\, widespread class of protein misfolding that can result in soluble\, loss-of-function states\, some of which evade the proteostasis network. This class of misfolding involves structural changes in geometric motifs called non-covalent lasso entanglements\, which are found in 70% of the native structures of globular proteins. In this talk\, I will synthesize six lines of evidence: (1) proteome-wide and atomistic simulations establish the prevalence and physical plausibility of self-entanglement misfolding\; (2) translation-speed changes from synonymous mutations re-partition folding trajectories into slowly interconverting\, near-native entangled ensembles with reduced catalytic efficiency\; (3) distributions of entangled microstates rationalize stretched-exponential refolding kinetics\; (4) native-like surfaces coupled to these topological barriers explain how some misfolded states bypass chaperones\; and (5) limited proteolysis and cross-linking mass spectrometry provide proteome-scale signals of these states in E. coli. Finally\, I will present unpublished results showing that these misfolded states are associated with increased nascent protein degradation through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway in human cells\, with structural changes in proteins that occur during yeast mother cell aging\, and with a higher likelihood of harboring pathogenic mutations in human disease. Taken together\, simulations and experiments are converging on a unified picture in which entanglement misfolding is common\, biologically consequential\, and measurable.\n\n1. DESCRIPTION:This lecture examines the Krusha e Madhe Massacre Museum within the wider field of museum practice in Kosova\, analyzing how processes of heritagization transform sites of atrocity into spaces of collective memory. By situating the museum in relation to broader debates on the musealization of trauma\, the talk considers how exhibitionary forms mediate the tensions between commemoration\, pedagogy\, and political legitimacy in post-war societies.\n\nArsim Canolli is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Prishtina\, Kosova\, where he\nalso serves as the founding Director of the Institute of Anthropology and Editor-in-Chief of peer- reviewed journal \"Kosova Anthropologica\". A graduate of the Department of Anthropology at University College London (UCL)\, his work bridges material culture\, collective memory\, and heritage studies\, with a particular focus on Kosova and the wider Balkan region. He has published several books\, along with numerous chapters and peer-reviewed articles in English\, French\, and Albanian\, and has translated a number of works into Albanian. Over the past decade\, his research has centered on collective memory\, leading and mentoring seven major projects. His most recent project documented the experiences of survivors of the village of Krusha e Madhe massacre of 1999\, resulting in the establishment of the Krusha e Madhe Massacre Museum. He is currently preparing a book on museum exhibitions in Kosova.

DESCRIPTION:From functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans\, we can estimate an individual’s fluid intelligence\, ability to focus\, executive function\, and memory skills. We can predict developmental trajectories and detect dysfunction such as attention deficits and memory problems\; other labs use our methods to study clinical conditions such as autism\, depression\, and anxiety. fMRI can decode brain activity and predict behavior with increasing power and sophistication.\n\nAbout the speaker: Marvin M. Chun is the Richard M. Colgate Professor of Psychology at Yale University\, with secondary appointments in the Cognitive Science Program and the Yale School of Medicine Department of Neuroscience. He is also a member of the Wu Tsai Institute at Yale. Professor Chun received his B.A. in Psychology from Yonsei University (South Korea)\, Ph.D. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, and his postdoctoral training at Harvard University. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Melissa Gross\, associate professor of movement science and director of the Behavioral Biomechanics Laboratory\, is one of three finalists selected for Baylor University’s 2026 Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching. The Cherry Award is the only national teaching award – with the single largest monetary reward of $250\,000 – presented by a college or university to an individual for exceptional teaching. The winning professor will be announced by Baylor in spring 2026.\n\nDr. Gross will present her Cherry Award finalist keynote\, \"Learning to Look: Cultivating the Anatomical Gaze\,” on Friday\, Sept. 26\, from 2:30-3:40 p.m. in the School of Kinesiology Building\, rooms 2600 and 2080 (overflow seating). Open to the public\; no RSVP needed.\n\nAbout the finalist: A biomechanics researcher noted for her interdisciplinary work\, Dr. Melissa Gross has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and served on the editorial board for the Journal of Applied Biomechanics. A past president and fellow of the American Society of Biomechanics\, she has secured over $1.5 million in grant funding from NIH\, NSF\, and Veterans Affairs. In 2014\, Gross received the Arthur F. Thurnau Professorship\, which recognizes tenured U-M faculty whose commitment to and investment in undergraduate teaching has had a demonstrable impact on the intellectual development and lives of their students. She has held leadership roles in academic innovation and digital education\, including serving as director of the School of Kinesiology's Innovative Teaching and Learning initiative (2013-2019) and U-M's Women in Science and Engineering program (2019-2024). SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Inputs or Outputs: What to Test and How to Test (with Christoph Cahrnel)
DESCRIPTION:We study the optimal design of tests in environments where agents can invest in inputs (e.g.\, effort) to enhance their individual outputs (e.g.\, human capital)\, which are then sold in a competitive market (e.g.\, labor market). Recognizing agents’ heterogeneity in converting inputs into outputs\, the designer devises a test to maximize the expected total output. Unlike the existing literature\, we consider a setting where the designer can choose the test variable\, i.e.\, whether to test inputs\, outputs\, or a combination of the two. Although both the market and the designer care about outputs only\, we find that tests based exclusively on inputs are most effective at incentivizing output production if the designer can coordinate market beliefs and agents’ behavior on her preferred equilibrium. However\, such pure input tests are prone to adverse equilibria\, supported by pessimistic market beliefs about the types of agents passing the test. If the designer is concerned about the worst equilibrium outcome\, input tests are suboptimal. Pure output tests are not optimal either. Indeed\, while robust to adverse equilibrium selection\, they fail to motivate high-productivity agents adequately. The reason is that high-productivity agents can reach the output threshold with relatively low input investment\, leading to “free-riding on talent.”\nWe derive the optimal pass/fail test designed to incentivize total output production robustlyand demonstrate its straightforward implementation through three simple components: two output thresholds (one high and one low) and one input threshold. Agents achieve a passing grade exclusively when their input-output combination exceeds at least two of these three thresholds. In an extension\, we show how the main insights carry over to more general multi-threshold tests. Using tests based on inputs alone is optimal if the designer can coordinate beliefs. However\, under adversarial equilibrium selection\, the designer can improve by using a combination of input and output components.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  The widely used phase-field approach for modeling fracture is based on the Griffith criterion\, which says that the elastic energy released is proportional to the length of the crack formed. Mathematically\, this is posed as the minimization of the Griffith energy that penalizes both bulk (elastic) and surface (crack) contributions. The goal of this talk is to understand the existence and structure of minimizers of this energy. We will discuss existence of strong solutions\, which have concentrated cracks that cannot \"pulverize\" the material. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by a talk of S. Hopkins\, we (Gaetz–Pechenik–Pfannerer–Striker–Swanson) introduced the notion of promotion permutations. Given a rectangular standard Young tableau T with r rows\, this is a tuple of r−1 permutations that records its orbit structure of Schützenberger promotion. For r=4\, these objects played a key role in our construction of the first rotation-invariant web bases for the SL4 invariant spaces.\n\nIn this talk\, however\, I will focus on different directions\, highlighting some of the combinatorial properties of promotion permutations and applications of related constructions. For example\, in the situation where T is obtained by stacking two rectangular tableaux P and Q\, one recovers the Robinson–Schensted correspondence.\n\nIn Type C\, a related construction yields an alternative description of Sundaram’s bijection between the set of r-symplectic oscillating tableaux of empty shape and the set of (r+1)-noncrossing perfect matchings.\n\nIn Type B\, similar ideas allow us to prove a cyclic sieving phenomenon for the action of promotion on staircase plane partitions of height two\, using the bush basis of the degree-two part of the coordinate ring of the space of electrical networks\, due to Gao–Lam–Xu.\n\nThis talk is based on joint work with various subsets of: Gaetz\, Hopkins\, Kim\, Pappe\, Pechenik\, Rubey\, Schilling\, Simone\, Striker\, Swanson\, and Westbury.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Megan Whitney
DESCRIPTION:The acquisition of mammal-like features is a classic case study in step-wise gradualism. This pattern has emerged from the robust fossil record documenting these transitions in non-mammalian synapsids. Along this transitionary series\, however\, an emerging dichotomy between 'specialized' and 'derived' mammalian features and 'simple' and 'ancestral' reptilian features has prevailed. As a result\, we tend to insinuate complexity and specialization as an inherently mammalian feature which negates the diversity of features and complexity found in other vertebrate groups\, especially reptiles. Using histological details of the dentition\, my research in non-mammalian synapsids dismantles this dichotomy and suggests alternative hypotheses than just step-wise gradualism alone as potential drivers in the acquisition of 'mammalress'.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS 2025 Kavita Datla Memorial Lecture | Spectral Conversions: Becoming Muslim in Late-Seventeenth-Century Mughal India
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/bVgNy\n\nIn Spring 2024\, parts of Maharashtra were rocked by riots following calls by Hindu nationalist groups to exhume the remains of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb ʿAlamgir (*r.* 1658–1707). At the heart of this controversy is a long-standing accusation: that Aurangzeb was a violent zealot who forcibly converted large numbers of Hindus to Islam. This lecture reconsiders that claim by drawing on the *Akhbarat*—a rich set of imperial newsletters—and places the question of conversion within the broader context of Mughal political and religious life. How have historians approached conversion in the Mughal Empire? Why were the Mughals\, including Aurangzeb\, largely uninterested in conversion? And how can we think about the motives\, meanings\, and limits of conversion at the Mughal court? The lecture concludes with the story of Hidayatkesh Khan\, a convert to Islam who rose to become Aurangzeb’s private secretary\, revealing both the opportunities and constraints that conversion could entail under Mughal rule.\n   \n   Munis D. Faruqui is a historian in the Department of South & Southeast Asian Studies at UC Berkeley. His focus is on the Muslim experience in South Asia\, especially during the Mughal period. His books include *Princes of the Mughal Empire\, 1504–1719* (Cambridge University Press\, 2012)\, *Expanding Frontiers in South Asian and World History*\, co-edited with Richard Eaton\, David Gilmartin\, and Sunil Kumar (Cambridge University Press\, 2013)\, and *Religious Interactions in Mughal India*\, co-edited with Vasudha Dalmia (Oxford University Press\, 2014). He has recently completed a book (forthcoming with Cambridge University Press) focused on the life and reign of Emperor Aurangzeb ʿAlamgir (1618–1707) and Mughal Empire in the latter half of the seventeenth and first decades of the eighteenth century.\n   \n   The Center for South Asian Studies Fall 2025 beginning-of-school year reception will follow after the lecture in the same venue.\n\n  The recording of this lecture will not be uploaded to YouTube. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kirby Conrod received their BA in Linguistics and Literature at UC Santa Cruz\, and their MA and PhD in Linguistics at the University of Washington. Their dissertation\, Pronouns Raising and Emerging\, is a sociosyntactic analysis of a change in progress around the specific use of singular they. Their recent work focuses on nonbinary pronouns and other sociolinguistic approaches to morphosyntax. They are currently an assistant professor of Linguistics at Swarthmore College\, where they lead the Socially Contextualized Syntax (SoCS) Lab. Their upcoming book\, How to Nonbinary a Language (OUP\, 2028) explores the diverse linguistic strategies employed by nonbinary people around the world.\n\nTitle: How to Nonbinary a Language\n\nAbstract: How do nonbinary people use the morphosyntactic and lexical resources across the world's languages to craft a nonbinary linguistic gender presentation? I identify four major strategies: semantic shift\; analogical extension\; compounds / blending\; and pragmatic strategies. Examples from English\, German\, Russian\, Spanish\, Czech\, Hebrew\, ASL\, French\, Mandarin\, and more show how nonbinary people use and combine these strategies. DESCRIPTION:From the hushed opening of the “Requiem aeternam” to the thunderous cries of the “Dies irae\,” Verdi’s Requiem is one of the most powerful choral masterpieces ever written.\n\nUMS’s 25/26 Season opens with Verdi’s monumental work that fuses the drama of opera with the spiritual depth of sacred music. Written in memory of the Italian poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni\, it is a profoundly moving reflection that is simultaneously intimate and epic.\n\nThis performance celebrates UMS’s ongoing relationship with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, UMS Choral Union\, and DSO music director Jader Bignamini. The concert will only be performed in Ann Arbor and brings together a stellar international cast of soloists: South African soprano Vuvu Mpofu\, American mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke\, Mexican American tenor René Barbera\, and Chinese bass-baritone Shenyang.

DESCRIPTION:A wise wizard once said: “when in doubt\, always follow your nose.” \n\nThe last album from Penny and Sparrow\, Olly Olly\, was a work of revelation and liberation. A search for and an embrace of the self. I imagine they were left with a headscratcher of a question: well\, shit. Where do you go from there?\n\nFortunately\, they listened to the wizard and followed their noses backwards to find their way forward. \n\nAiming to strip away pretense and invite experimentation\, they commandeered a garden shed from a friend and retrofitted it to make a twenty-track album that is vast\, weird\, and wholly unexpected. \n\nIf Lefty is anything\, it is the journal of Penny and Sparrow’s inner child. Dog-eared\, lock busted open. On its pages the sketches of dreams\, nightmares\, erotica\, and literary fan fiction graffiti the margins of poetry\, elegies\, and love letters in the wild colors of saxophone blue\, electronic pink\, and blood harmony red. \n\nBeautifully varied and richly rendered\, it is an album that wanders from theme to theme\, style to style\, exultation to tragedy. Yet it is never lost.
