DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate.  This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Efforts to Constrain the Nature Dark Matter with the DESI Stellar Surveys
DESCRIPTION:In addition to its primary mission to constrain the nature of dark energy with BAO\, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument is obtaining spectra of over 12 million stars in the Milky Way and several Local Group galaxies. These spectra yield excellent radial velocity precision (~1-10km/s for most stars)\, as well as abundances for ~10 elements. In conjunction with proper motions from ESO's Gaia satellite\, the six-dimensional phase space information being collected by DESI will enable us to set constraints on the Milky Way halo's global dark matter density profile and shape. We are also constraining the central and outer dark matter density profiles of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. In addition we are exhaustively surveying several stellar tidal streams in the Milky Way with the goal of constraining the mass function and central density profiles of dark matter subhalos. I will describe some recent results and future plans of DESI's Milky Way working group. I will also briefly describe some on-going theoretical projects that will enable us to measure figure rotation (tumbling) of the Milky Way's dark matter halo - one of the few dynamical properties consistently predicted for Lambda CDM.

DESCRIPTION:Darby Saxbe of the University of Southern California joins the RCGD Fall Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships.\n\nThe Transition to Fatherhood as a Window for Neural\, Hormonal\, and Psychological Remodeling\n\nThis talk will review several studies on hormone and brain changes across the transition to parenthood in first-time human fathers. Darby Saxbe et al find that men show cortical volume decreases that are similar to those seen in mothers\, but are less significant and more variable. They also show that when men express more motivation to parent\, and more engagement in parenting\, they show larger gray matter volume decreases. At the same time\, gray matter volume decreases are associated with more postpartum mental health problems and poor sleep quality. The talk will also describe research on perinatal resting state connectivity and white matter changes in men\, and functional studies on men reacting to infant stimuli and emotional faces.\n\nDarby Saxbe\, PhD\, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Southern California\, where she serves as the current Director of Clinical Training for the Clinical Science program. She has published over eighty scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals\, and her research has been funded by major awards from both NIH and NSF. She has earned early career recognition from the American Psychological Association and the Society for Research in Child Development and was a Fulbright fellow to Spain in 2019.\n\nAbout the series:\n\nHumans are social animals and from the earliest days of life\, are dependent on the quality of social relationships with significant others: family\, kin\, friends\, and a growing social network of online acquaintances. But\, how do we conduct research and come to understand the social processes transpiring in these significant social connections with others? What are the consequences for individual development and mental health outcomes of having close intimate relationships in one’s life? There is also a darker side to some relationships in the form of violence\, aggression\, and conflict. How do we study these processes? Social media and artificial intelligence have opened up new ways of thinking about “what is a social relationship?” and how many of these “friends” can one truly have. \n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on different types of social relationships\, spanning family and parent-child relationships\, friendships\, peer networks\, romantic relationships\, attachment relationships\, and the use of online media to maintain social connections. Although several speakers are senior scholars with extensive research backgrounds in the field\, many are junior scholars who are traversing new paths into the science of social relationships. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sex and the QT Interval
DESCRIPTION:An excessively long QT interval on an electrocardiogram indicates risk of a rare but dangerous arrythmia known as Torsades des Pointes\, which can lead to fainting spells and sudden cardiac death. There exists a small average difference in QT interval length between women and men. Connected with the widely publicized downfall of the blockbuster drug Seldane in the 1990s\, women’s purportedly prolonged QT interval became a touchstone example of the potentially deadly consequences of conducting drug testing only in men.\n\nRevisiting the canonical story of the QT interval\, Seldane\, and sex differences in adverse drug events\, this talk examines this iconic sex difference fact in the history of women’s health and drug safety testing. Applying a sex contextualist framework (Richardson 2022)\, I show how contextual judgments about whether and when sex is relevant occur all along the pathway of reasoning about how to best predict the safety profile of a drug\, including when designing model systems in non-human animals\, in vitro\, and in silico screens.\n\nSarah Richardson is Aramont Professor of the History of Science and Professor of Studies of Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality at Harvard University\, where she has taught since 2010. Her courses include gender and science\, feminist science studies\, interdisciplinary research methods in gender studies\, bias\, hype\, and objectivity in science\, heredity and reproduction\, postgenomics\, medical management of the female body\, and sex\, gender\, and evolution. \n\nAn expert in the history and philosophy of the sciences of sex\, gender\, sexuality\, and reproduction\, she also writes and teaches about race and science\, history and philosophy of biology (in particular\, genomics and evolutionary biology)\, feminist epistemology and philosophy of science\, and the social dimensions of scientific knowledge. She currently serves on the Harvard Standing Committees for Degrees in Social Studies and for the Mind\, Brain\, and Behavior Interfaculty Initiative. \n\nThis talk has been generously cosponsored by the Center for History\, Humanities\, Arts\, Social Sciences\, and Ethics in Medicine and Women and Gender Studies.

DESCRIPTION:The aim of this talk is twofold - to give a taste of how simple ideas can help study the homotopy type of complicated simplicial complexes\, and to introduce the Steinberg module. The Steinberg module is an important representation of the General Linear Group that helps study its cohomology\, and can be defined in terms of a certain simplicial complex. We will build up towards defining this complex and proving the Solomon-Tits theorem that shows it is highly connected. If time permits\, we shall also see a construction by Lee-Szczarba that builds a resolution of the Steinberg module by analyzing a simplicial complex.

DESCRIPTION:With one of the longest-standing partnerships in the Asia-Pacific\, spanning more than seven decades\, the United States and the Republic of Korea have built a lasting economic partnership and security alliance that has prevailed throughout a variety of challenges and shifts in administrative priorities. This alliance continues to remain a central part of both nations' security\, economic\, and cultural ties. What goes into building such an alliance? What is the state of this relationship today?\n   \n   Please join the Nam Center for Korean Studies as we welcome two speakers for a discussion of U.S.-Korea relations\, life in the foreign service and experiences at Washington D.C. think tanks.\n   \n   The event will feature Henry Haggard\, Former Minister Counselor for Political Affairs\, U.S. Embassy Seoul\, and Director for UK and the Eastern Mediterranean\, National Security Council. He is currently a Non-Resident Fellow at the Baker Institute\, Rice University\, Senior Associate of the KF-VUB Korea Chair at the Centre for Security\, Diplomacy and Strategy (CSDS) and U.S. Senior Advisor at AMCHAM Korea. He completed a 25-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service in 2024\, retiring as a member of the Senior Foreign Service\, rank of Counselor. From 2021-23 he served as the top advisor on Korean politics and managed our bilateral security relationship at the U.S. Embassy in South Korea. Prior to that\, he served as director at the National Security Council under both the Trump and Biden administration\, coordinating our policy engagement with Turkey and the UK.\n   \n   The discussion will be moderated by Ellen Kim\, director of Academic Affairs at the Korea Economic Institute. DESCRIPTION:The panel will examine several issues facing the country as two powerful forces seem to be at odds. How much power infrastructure do we need to build to decarbonize and meet growing data center and other power demand\, and can it be done? Do well-intended laws and processes enacted over the last 50 years even allow large scale infrastructure development anymore? Can the development be done consistent with societal environmental and labor standards?\n\nThis event is a part of U-M Climate Week 2025: Together for Tomorrow\, cosponsored by the School for Environment and Sustainability and the Office of Vice Provost for Sustainability and Climate Action.\n\n#UMCW25\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\nRob Gramlich is President of Grid Strategies LLC\, a Washington DC-based consultancy focused on transmission and power markets for a reliable\, affordable\, and sustainable power system.  He co-founded  Americans for a Clean Energy Grid\, Working for Advanced Transmission Technologies (WATT Coalition)\, Advancing Modern Powerlines\, the Macro Grid Initiative\, and the Future Power Markets Forum. Rob has been invited to testify by both parties before Congress\, FERC\, and state agencies. He has earned awards from FERC as Exemplar of Public Service\, the Energy Systems Integration Group for contributions to market design and transmission planning\, The Hill Magazine for lobbying\, and the American Wind Energy Association for Technical Achievement. Rob previously oversaw transmission and power market policy for the American Wind Energy Association as SVP and Interim CEO\, served as Economic Advisor to FERC Chairman Pat Wood III\, and was Senior Economist at PJM Interconnection. Rob has a Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree from UC Berkeley and a BA with Honors in Economics from Colby College.\n\nCatherine H. Hausman is an associate professor at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economics Research. Her work focuses on environmental and energy economics. Recent projects have looked at inequality and environmental quality\, the natural gas sector's role in methane leaks\, the impact of climate change on the electricity grid\, and the effects of nuclear power plant closures. Her research has appeared in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics\, the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy\, the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity\, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Prior to her graduate studies\, Catherine studied in Peru under a Fulbright grant. She has taught statistics\, a policy seminar on energy and the environment\, and a course on government regulation of industry and the environment. She holds a BA from the University of Minnesota and a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California\, Berkeley.\n\nKaitlin Raimi is an associate professor of public policy at the Ford School. As a social/environmental psychologist\, her interests center on how individuals can promote or prevent sustainable behaviors and policies. She has three broad areas of research: (1) how people compare their own beliefs and behaviors to others\, (2) how adopting one pro-environmental behavior affects later action\, and (3) how climate change communication affects people’s understanding\, behaviors\, and support for climate policies and technologies.\n\nAlexandra B. Klass is the James G. Degnan Professor of Law at Michigan Law. She teaches and writes in the areas of energy law\, environmental law\, natural resources law\, tort law\, and property law. From April 2022 to July 2023\, she served in the Biden-Harris administration as deputy general counsel for energy efficiency and clean energy demonstrations at the US Department of Energy. Klass’s recent scholarly work\, published in many of the nation’s leading law journals\, addresses regulatory challenges to integrating more renewable energy into the nation’s electric transmission grid\, siting and eminent domain issues surrounding interstate electric transmission lines and oil and gas pipelines\, and applications of the public trust doctrine to modern environmental law challenges.

Since joining the University of Michigan faculty in 2012\, his clinical work has focused on caring for both the adult and pediatric patients living with serious illness. In addition\, he serves as SectionHead of the Adult Palliative Medicine Program at Michigan Medicine and asa hospice physician for Elara Hospice. DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, November 3\, 2025\, the Trotter Multicultural Center\, in partnership with the Central Student Government and the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID)\, will host Peril & Promise: A Conversation on College Leadership in Rackham Auditorium at the University of Michigan. This of a kind event will bring together two esteemed leaders in higher education:\n\nDr. Beverly Daniel Tatum\, president emerita of Spelman College\, psychologist\, and best-selling author of Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?\n\nDr. Ruth J. Simmons\, president emerita of Smith College\, Brown University\, and Prairie View A&M University\, and a nationally respected voice on equity\, access\, and institutional change.\n\nThis public conversation—moderated by Dr. Earl Lewis—will explore the promise and challenges of leadership in complex times\, with particular attention to the role of student activism\, institutional memory\, and courageous decision-making.
