DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world.   Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate.  This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Fifteen linocuts\, each representing an article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, show artist Meredith Stern's interpretation of these articles. \n\nOriginally drafted in 1948 by representatives from across the globe\, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 rights that the United Nations General Assembly asserts should be protected worldwide. This declaration has been translated into 500 languages. \n\nIn 2017\, the Joseph A. Labadie Collection acquired one of only 28 printed sets of Stern's linocuts. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:When Labor Rigidities Meet Financial Constraints: Evidence from Italy
DESCRIPTION:I explore the role of rising unit labor costs\, proxied by collectively bargained wage floors\, in depressing the Italian manufacturing sector.  I answer this in two steps. First\, using a comprehensive dataset of Italian manufacturing firms from 1999-2019\, I find that a one percentage point increase in the sectoral wage floor is associated with a 0.28 percentage point contraction in firm-level investment and a 0.21 percentage point contraction in firm-level employment. These effects are highly heterogeneous and indicative of a role for financial frictions: Small\, highly leveraged firms experience contractions three times larger than those of large\, low-leverage firms. To understand the mechanisms behind this and quantify aggregate effects\, I develop a model where overlapping generations of heterogeneous firms face both collateral constraints and industry-wide wage floors. Calibrated to Italy's 25 percent unit labor cost increase between 2000-2015\, the model predicts aggregate contractions in manufacturing investment (3.5 percent)\, employment (2.1 percent)\, and real GDP (1.9 percent). A decomposition reveals that financial frictions amplify the direct effects of wage rigidity by approximately 30 percent through an interaction effect. The results highlight how labor market institutions and financial frictions can interact to generate persistent effects on firm dynamics and aggregate performance.

DESCRIPTION:CREES is delighted to support the international art exhibition Between Voice and Silence. Dedicated to the fallen Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov\, the exhibit’s title is borrowed from one of his poems. Exploring the role of empathy and humanity in the times of crisis\, Ukrainian and American artists Katya Lisova (textiles)\, Matvii Vaisberg (prints)\, and Ira Bondarenko (ceramics) reflect on the power and limits of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\n\nThe exhibition\, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan’s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5\, 2025\, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. DESCRIPTION:Description:  Pleiotropy offers a unifying framework that reveals how seemingly unrelated traits can be linked through a single gene. One such group of genes in the class insecta are the pigmentation genes. My project will focus on understanding how tissue-specific regulation of pigmentation genes underlies variation in mating signals in Drosophila. Specifically\, I will investigate three interrelated themes: (1) how pigmentation genes influence mating behavior\, (2) the evolutionary consequences of pleiotropy across species and (3) the tissue-specific regulatory architecture that enables modular gene function. This project will identify which regulatory modules influence chemistry\, colour\, or both\, providing empirical evidence for how modularity mitigates pleiotropic constraints. Additionally\, comparative analysis in the D. americana group—where pigmentation and CHC divergence might contribute to incipient speciation —will place functional results in a macro-evolutionary context\, asking whether the same pleiotropic variants are repeatedly recruited or whether selection favours lineage-specific solutions.

In contrast to the conventional view of China’s development strategy as linear\, top-down\, and coherent\, this book uncovers the contradictions and conflicts inherent in China’s economic policy paradigms\, rooted in the social logic of bureaucratic competition\, generational shifts\, and network coalitions in the Chinese state. The book won the 2005 Sociology of Development Best Book Award from the American Sociological Association.\n   \n   Yingyao Wang is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia. She works at the intersection of economic sociology\, political sociology\, and development. She has published articles on corruption\, taxation\, and China’s industrial policy and financial market development. Currently\, she is working on projects related to China’s outward foreign direct investment\, how China study other parts of the world\, and the relationship between corruption\, finance\, and the making of market frontiers. DESCRIPTION:We propose a class of stochastic orders\, CAD\, defined using conditional distributions\, to compare interdependence of joint distributions. We show that for binary action\, symmetric\, separable games\, and symmetric pure strategy Bayes-Nash equilibrium\, increase of similarity of information in the CAD order expands (shrinks) the equilibrium set when the game exhibits strategic complementarity (substitutability). We provide three different orders — weak\, intermediate\, and strong\, that establish the above relation for games where the net payoff is linear\, convex\, and increasing in aggregate action\, respectively. Under additional assumptions\, we show that the reverse direction of this relation also holds true.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 30\, 2025\n1:00-2:00pm ET\n\n1430BD ISR-Thompson\n426 Thompson St.\n\nOr via zoom:\nMeeting ID: 913 3699 9447\nPasscode: 878303\n\nABSTRACT: As part of the wider SRC Future of Surveys initiative\, the committee on response rates vs. data quality has collectively identified what it believes to be the essential elements of a modern\, standardized SRC report on the quality of the data produced by a given survey (a “quality profile”). This presentation will review the essential components of this quality profile identified by the committee\, giving background on each and discussing the feasibility of producing these components for individual SRC projects and programs. The committee aims to use this presentation to invite a broader set of feedback from SRC faculty\, staff\, and affiliates on these components\, as part of a dedicated effort to move toward the standardized preparation and dissemination of these quality profiles for all SRC data collection projects.\n\nBrady T. West is a Research Professor in the Survey Methodology Program and the Department of Biostatistics. His current research interests include selection bias in surveys\, the implications of measurement error in auxiliary variables and survey paradata for survey estimation\, responsive and/or adaptive survey design\, interviewer effects\, and multilevel regression models for clustered and longitudinal data. An author of more than 230 peer-reviewed journal articles in survey methodology\, applied statistics\, and public health\, he is also the lead author of two books that are now in their third editions\, one of which compares different statistical software packages in terms of their mixed-effects modeling procedures (Linear Mixed Models: A Practical Guide using Statistical Software\, Third Edition\, Chapman Hall/CRC Press\, 2022)\, and a second titled Applied Survey Data Analysis\, Third Edition (with Steven Heeringa and Pat Berglund) that provides a comprehensive overview of practical analysis strategies for data arising from complex sample surveys. He was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2022.\n\nJames Wagner is a Research Professor in the Survey Methodology Program. He has worked on surveys for over 25 years and has extensive experience with sample design. In addition to sample design\, Wagner’s research interests include adaptive survey design to address potential nonresponse biases and indicators of survey data quality. He recently served as interim director of SRC.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Economy\, The Ghost in your Gene\, and the Escape from Premature Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Explanations for the West's escape from premature mortality have focused on chronic malnutrition or income and on public health or state capacity. We argue that by ignoring the multigenerational effects of variance in ancestors' harvests\, we are underestimating the contribution of modern economic growth to the escape from early death at older ages. Using a newly constructed multigenerational dataset for Sweden\, we show that grandsons' longevity was strongly linked to spatial shocks in paternal grandfathers' yearly harvest variability when agricultural productivity was low and market integration was limited. We reason that an epigenetic mechanism is the most plausible explanation for our findings. We posit that the removal of trade barriers\, improvements in transportation\, and agricultural innovation reduced harvest variability. We contend that for older Swedish men (but not women) born 1830-1909 this reduction was as important as decreasing contemporaneous infectious disease rates and more important than eliminating exposure to poor harvests in-utero.

DESCRIPTION:We will be offering a free copy of *Technocreep and the Politics of Things Not Seen* to the first 25 in-person attendees!\n\nIn this talk\, Neda Atanasoski and Nassim Parvin will discuss their recent book and edited volume\, *Technocreep and the Politics of Things Not Seen*\, published by Duke University Press in May 2025. New and emerging technologies\, especially ones that infiltrate intimate spaces\, relations\, homes\, and bodies\, are often referred to as creepy in media and political discourses. The book introduces a feminist theory of creep\, substantiating it through critical engagement with smart homes\, smart dust\, smart desires\, and smart forests\, toward dreams of feminist futures. Contributing authors further illuminate what is otherwise obscured\, assumed\, or dismissed in characterizations of technology as creepy or creeping. Considering diverse technologies\, such as border surveillance and China’s credit system\, as well as sexcams and home assistants\, the volume’s essays and artworks demonstrate that the potentials and pitfalls of artificial intelligence and digital and robotic technologies cannot be assessed through binaries of seeing/being seen\, privacy/surveillance\, or harmful/useful.\n\nNeda Atanasoski is Professor and Chair of the Harriet Tubman Department of Women\, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Maryland\, College Park and Associate Director of Education for the Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland (AIM). Atanasoski’s interdisciplinary research has focused on feminism and AI\, feminist and critical race approaches to science and technology studies\, AI and the future of work\, militarism\, and human rights and humanitarianism. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | One Century of Quantum Science and the Future: Next-generation Quantum Materials\, Ultrafast Physics\, Moiré Lattice Design and  Beyond the Standard Model
DESCRIPTION:A hundred years after the birth of quantum mechanics\, we now possess atomic-scale “knobs”: twist\, stack\, strain\, and light\, that allow us to program matter. This talk surveys how these knobs enable qualitatively new regimes in quantum materials\, with two complementary thrusts that bridge fundamental discovery and deployable technology.\n\nPart I: Ultrafast and moiré engineering. We show how terahertz (THz) fields provide a dynamic\, non-contact gate to steer charge\, spin\, and surface morphology at sub-Å length scales and femtosecond timescales\, enabling reversible\, ultrafast control of surface topology and interfacial potentials. [1] We then present design rules for controlling band topology\, excitonic structure\, and  interlayer hybridization in 2D bilayers and heterostructures\, using twist angle and stacking registry as primary control parameters. [2\, 3]\n\nPart II: Quantum materials as precision sensors for fundamental symmetries. We outline a solid-state platform that couples diamond colour centres to rare\, octupole-deformed nuclei to search for symmetry-violating electric dipole moments (EDMs) beyond the Standard Model. [4] Our quantum calculations indicates that substituting 229Pa into a carbon-vacancy site yields deep-gap\, molecule-like states with narrow optical transitions and long spin coherence\, amenable to high-fidelity readout. Isoelectronic lanthanide proxies (e.g.\, Pr3+\, Tb3+) provide non-radioactive testbeds for growth and spectroscopy prior to implantation. The resulting roadmap links rare-isotope production (e.g.\, FRIB) with nanophotonic integration and laser control to create scalable\, solid-state quantum sensors for EDM searches\, nuclear clock development\, and time-reversal tests.\n\nOutlook. By uniting moiré design\, ultrafast field control\, and defect–nucleus co-engineering\, we propose a materials-by-design paradigm that both honors and extends a century of quantum science\; advancing ultrafast electronics while opening precision windows onto new physics.\n\nReferences\n\n[1] V. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Hannah Larson- Cohomology of moduli spaces of curves
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The moduli space M_g of genus g curves (or Riemann surfaces) is a central object of study in algebraic geometry. Its cohomology is important in many fields. For example\, the cohomology of M_g is the same as the cohomology of the mapping class group\, and is also related to spaces of modular forms. Using its properties as a moduli space\, Mumford defined a distinguished subring of the cohomology of M_g called the tautological ring. The definition of the tautological ring was later extended to the compactification M_g-bar and the moduli spaces with marked points M_{g\,n}-bar. While the full cohomology ring of M_{g\,n}-bar is quite mysterious\, the tautological subring is relatively well understood\, and conjecturally completely understood. In this talk\, I'll discuss several results about the cohomology groups of M_{g\,n}-bar\, particularly regarding when they are tautological or not. This is joint work with Samir Canning\, Sam Payne\, and Thomas Willwacher.\n\nBio: Hannah Larson is an Assistant Professor and Clay Research Fellow at University of California\, Berkeley. She received her PhD from Stanford University\, where she was advised by Ravi Vakil. Her research centers around algebraic curves and their moduli spaces and has been recognized with a 2024 Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize.

DESCRIPTION:The Ending Lamination Conjecture was one of the central problems in the theory of 3-manifolds and its resolution in the 2000s by Brock–Canary–Minsky stands as a milestone in the classification of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The proof required a deep understanding of the space of ending laminations and combined a wide range of ideas and techniques\, many of which continue to play a crucial role across current research areas.\n\nIn this reading seminar\, we will study the topological properties of the space of ending laminations\, following Gabai’s 2008 paper [1]. Our second meeting will continue our discussion on the hyperbolicity of curve graph\, and we will revisit the notion of measured lamination and foliation.
