Are horror movies halal?”\n\nThis year’s 2025 film festival runs throughout October on Tuesdays. Halaloween will showcase one film streaming online from October 1-15\; a montage of short films in-person at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn on Tuesday\, October 14 at 7pm\; and two in-person screenings at the State Theatre\, on Tuesday October 21 and 28 at 7pm.\n\nThe festival is free in-person and online–but make sure to reserve tickets! Check the Halaloween Horror Rating in the description of each film for its scariness rating and other details.\n\n\nThe 2025 Halaloween Lineup:\n\nOctober 1-15: Xoftex | Greece/Palestine/Syria | 2024 | Online Screening\nOctober 14: Short Films | Saudi Arabia\, Syria\, Mauritania\, Morocco\, Tunisia | 7:00pm | Arab American National Museum (Dearborn) \nOctober 21: Agora | Tunisia | 2024 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\nOctober 28: Algiers | Algeria | 2024 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\n\nRSVP & stream our online selection: https://watch.eventive.org/halaloween\n\n\nSTREAM ONLINE FROM OCTOBER 1-15\nXOFTEX | 2024 | 99 mins | Directed by Noez Deshe\n\nPalestinian-Syrian teenager Nasser and his older brother Yassin have been living in a Greek refugee camp\, awaiting a decision on their asylum application. They pass the time recording comedy sketches and fantasizing about making zombie films and moving to Sweden. Nasser\, however\, feels increasingly trapped in this No Man’s Land. With nowhere to escape\, boiling tensions in the camp push Nasser to another reality. Highly experimental filmmaking.\n\nDirector Noaz Deshe works as a director and musician. He composed the soundtrack of Babak Jalali’s FRONTIER BLUES (2009)\, and was the cinematographer of the Tiger winner RADIO DREAMS (2016). His debut feature film WHITE SHADOW (2013) about a young albino person won the Lion of the Future Award at Venice Film Festival and was showcased at Sundance Film Festival. XOFTEX (2024) is his second feature film\, selected for FilmFest München. In addition to his artistic work\, he has worked as a volunteer on sea rescue missions and in refugee camps.\n\nHalaloween Horror Rating: 2/5 Pumpkins \n\nRating explanation: Not very scary\, but eerie\, experimental\, and suspenseful. Purposefully experimental to capture the difficulty of being in a refugee camp. Content warnings: drowning death\, monsters\, zombie references\, refugee camps\, hunger\, and fleeing war. SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)\nPhase 1 Curatorial Statement\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Amelia Burns (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Erin McKenna (courtyard pillar)\nArtists Amelia Burns and Erin McKenna reimagine the Division Street pillars through digital collages rooted in memory\, landscape and shared environments. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Website / Instagram\nErin McKenna Erin McKenna is an interdisciplinary artist with a background in sculpture. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. With a feminist lens\, she explores the space where necessity meets excess\, highlighting the subversive potential of both. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. Her process follows personal rules:\nno hierarchy of materialssubvert expected usecomplicate binaries\, stereotypes and associationsmisuse\, misapplyallow for variable arrangementsrepeat\, reiterate\, reuseconsider the subversive possibilities of the excessive\, fantastic\, and necessaryalways let the labor be visible\nMcKenna earned her BFA from Columbus College of Art &amp\; Design in 2012 and later completed her MFA at Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan. She recently moved back to the forest she calls home in Southeastern Ohio\, where she serves as Exhibitions Director at The Dairy Barn Arts Center\, hunts for mushrooms with her toddler\, and makes quilts. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibition. \"Between Voice and Silence\"
DESCRIPTION:CREES is delighted to support the international art exhibition Between Voice and Silence. Dedicated to the fallen Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov\, the exhibit’s title is borrowed from one of his poems. Exploring the role of empathy and humanity in the times of crisis\, Ukrainian and American artists Katya Lisova (textiles)\, Matvii Vaisberg (prints)\, and Ira Bondarenko (ceramics) reflect on the power and limits of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\n\nThe exhibition\, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan’s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5\, 2025\, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. The Ann Arbor Chapter of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America (UNWLA) also provided support for the project. \n \n Image: *Fly* by Katya Lisova\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MICDE – MSE Seminar: Michael Herbst\, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne
DESCRIPTION:Bio: Michael Herbst obtained a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry from Heidelberg University in 2018\, after which he moved on to two postdoctoral research stays in Applied Mathematics with Éric Cancès (École des Ponts\, France) and Benjamin Stamm (RWTH Aachen\, Germany). Since March 2023\, he has been a tenure-track assistant professor in the Institute of Mathematics and the Institute of Materials at EPFL. His current research spans broadly in the field of materials simulations concerning numerical error control and uncertainty quantification of first-principle simulations\, as well as the propagation of such errors during inverse materials design or when training machine learning models.\n\nAbstract: Reliable algorithmic differentiation techniques offer great promise for the inverse design of materials and functionals\, as well as the propagating uncertainties from functionals to DFT quantities of interest. Over the past years\, considerable effort has been spent on equipping the density-functional toolkit (DFTK\, https://dftk.org) with algorithmic differentiation capabilities. Prof. Herbst will present some of the required algorithmic developments\, e.g. to efficiently compute such DFT derivatives in numerically challenging metallic systems. Furthermore\, he will highlight the conceptual difficulties associated with applying AD to plane-wave DFT and discuss our recent results\, which demonstrate the current state of AD in DFTK for error estimation\, inverse design\, and implementing new functionality.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Inference on Optimal Policy Values and Other Irregular Functionals via Smoothing
DESCRIPTION:Constructing confidence intervals for the value of an optimal treatment policy is an important problem in causal inference. Insight into the optimal policy value can guide the development of reward-maximizing\, individualized treatment regimes. However\, because the functional that defines the optimal value is non-differentiable\, standard semi-parametric approaches for performing inference fail to be directly applicable. Existing approaches for handling this non-differentiability fall roughly into two camps. In one camp are estimators based on constructing smooth approximations of the optimal value. These approaches are computationally lightweight\, but typically place unrealistic parametric assumptions on outcome regressions. In another camp are approaches that directly de-bias the non-smooth objective. These approaches don't place parametric assumptions on nuisance functions\, but they either require the computation of intractably-many nuisance estimates\, assume unrealistic nuisance convergence rates\, or make strong margin assumptions that prohibit non-response to a treatment. In this paper\, we revisit the problem of constructing smooth approximations of non-differentiable functionals. By carefully controlling first-order bias and second-order remainders\, we show that a softmax smoothing-based estimator can be used to estimate parameters that are specified as a maximum of scores involving nuisance components. In particular\, this includes the value of the optimal treatment policy as a special case. Our estimator obtains convergence rates\, avoids parametric restrictions/unrealistic margin assumptions\, and is often statistically efficient.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Bridging Neural Circuits and Therapy: Advances in Deep Brain Stimulation\nAbstract:\nDeep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for multiple neurological disorders\, including advanced Parkinson's disease (PD)\, through continuous high-frequency brain stimulation. While its clinical benefits are well documented\, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Due to the anatomical and cellular heterogeneity of brain tissue\, DBS can modulate diverse neuronal elements and circuits at and around the stimulation site\, many of which may not directly contribute to therapeutic effects. Moreover\, conventional DBS systems typically operate in open-loop mode\, delivering fixed stimulation parameters regardless of patient state or neural activity. Identifying the specific circuits that mediate therapeutic benefits is therefore critical for refining target selection and developing next-generation treatment strategies. Optogenetics provides a powerful tool to overcome the nonselective nature of DBS by enabling cell-type specific modulation of neural populations. By integrating optogenetic interventions with electrophysiological recordings\, computational modeling\, and behavioral assays in preclinical models of PD\, our work seeks to dissect the circuit-level mechanisms underlying DBS and systematically evaluate how modulation of defined neural pathways alleviates parkinsonian motor symptoms. In addition\, I will introduce our recent efforts toward the development and preclinical evaluation of closed-loop DBS systems\, which dynamically adjust stimulation in response to ongoing neural and behavioral states. Together\, these approaches aim to advance both our mechanistic understanding of DBS and the design of more effective\, adaptive neuromodulation therapies for PD.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Enabling Secure\, Reliable and Affordable Energy Systems
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Todd Allen\n\nAbstract:\nThe U.S. is projecting its first major increase in electricity demand since 2007. Data centers alone are projected to consume 12% of U.S. electricity by 2030—triple today’s share—driven by AI and digital transformation. Add to this the impacts of electrification and manufacturing reshoring\, and the nation must prepare for an additional 130–150 GW of load by 2029\, according to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).\nMeeting this demand securely and affordably requires a broad\, inclusive energy strategy. We cannot rely on a single preferred energy source. Instead\, we must integrate existing large-scale resources—nuclear and fossil—with other energy options such as geothermal\, water power\, biomass\, renewables\, and advanced nuclear reactors to meet growing needs for electricity\, heat\, and cooling\, as well as the critical materials to build these systems.\nINL is advancing this vision through the proposed Energy Technology Proving Ground\, a first-of-its-kind facility designed to scale\, integrate\, and demonstrate multiple energy systems for commercial adoption. Initial large-scale hydrogen production tests will launch this fall\, with future work extending to synthetic fuels and chemicals powered by nuclear and renewables.\nBy accelerating the transition from lab innovation to marketplace deployment\, Idaho National Laboratory aims to drive U.S. energy resilience\, sustainability\, and global leadership in an era of unprecedented demand.\n\nBio:\nAs the Associate Laboratory Director of Energy and Environment Science and Technology at Idaho National Laboratory (INL)\, Shannon oversees a team of over 350 staff dedicated to a resilient\, affordable\, and diverse energy agenda. She steers INL’s research efforts to deliver viable energy solutions focusing on microgrid systems\, water treatment\, critical minerals and materials\, advanced manufacturing\, and efficient chemical production while harnessing cutting-edge technologies to efficiently integrate nuclear and other energy resources into the grid and the industrial sector. Shannon has earned a bachelor of science in nuclear engineering\, master of science in medical physics\, and a master of science and doctorate in nuclear engineering.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“The Timbrelessness of the String Quartet\,” Emily Dolan\, Brown University
DESCRIPTION:In much contemporary work on timbre\, attention to timbre is implicitly or explicitly framed as a disciplinary virtue. By this I mean that grappling with timbre is understood both to be a corrective to scholarship that has woefully ignored timbre and that attention to timbre is understood to bring us\, as listeners and scholars\, closer to some sort of sonic reality. The burgeoning subfield of timbre studies has been slow to reach chamber music\, and especially the Enlightenment-era string quartet. This lacuna is revealing: it gestures to the ways in which the string quartet has pointedly bypassed questions of timbre. The quartet has been held up as one of the paragons of “pure music” while scholars and critics have stressed questions of the genre’s “internal logic” and the interrelatedness of its musical elements (Bent 1994). For many\, the quartet is cerebral\, absolute\, and belongs to the “non-material world of the mind” (Dahlhaus 1991). This is not simply the product of later nineteenth-century formalist thought but has a longer history that is bound up with early writing on the quartet as a genre. Petiscus\, writing on the quartet in 1810\, declared that “the essential beauty of music lies not in [the] mere physical power of tone” (Petiscus 1810). Though this discourse does not necessarily name timbre\, the quartet has long been defined against music’s more material existence: it has been a space of “timbrelessness.” One inviting musicological move here would be to unmask all of this as ineluctably timbral. One could argue that timbre was ultimately vital to the instrumental blend of the quartet and that the “timbrelessness” of the quartet is intimately tied to ideas of timbral superiority and perfection associated with string instruments in the early nineteenth century. Tracing the quirky reception of Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat major\, Op. 74\, this essay considers how this particular quartet reveals the implicit timbral constraints that governed the behavior of string instruments in the genre of the string quartet\, inviting us to consider how listening past timbre has its own valuable history and learned audile techniques.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nEMILY I. DOLAN is Department Chair and Professor of Music at Brown University\, where she has taught since 2019\; previously she held positions at UPenn and Harvard. Dolan works on the music of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries\, focusing on issues of orchestration\, timbre\, aesthetics\, and instrumentality. She is the author of *The Orchestral Revolution: Haydn and the Technologies of Timbre* (Cambridge University Press\, 2013) and has published articles and essays in *Current Musicology*\, *Eighteenth-Century Music*\, *Studia Musicologica*\, *Keyboard Perspectives*\, *Representations*\, *Journal of the American Musicological Society*\, and *19th-Century Music*. In 2018\, she guest edited a double issue of *Opera Quarterly* entitled “Vocal Organologies and Philologies.” With Alexander Rehding\, Dolan co-edited *The Oxford Handbook of Timbre* (2021)\, which won the 2022 Ruth A. Solie Prize from the American Musicological Society. With Arman Schwartz and Emily MacGregor\, she co-edited *Sonic Circulations: Music\, Modernism\, and the Politics of Knowledge*\, which was recently published by University of Pennsylvania Press. Currently she is completing her second monograph\, *Instruments and Order*\, from which her talk is drawn.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FAST Lecture | Glass in the Late Roman and Early Byzantine Periods
DESCRIPTION:This FAST Lecture\, supported by the Kozma Fund\, will feature a presentation from Anastassios C. Antonaras—a specialist in the history of glass\, jewelry\, and textiles and an archaeologist\, curator\, and director of communication and visitor reception at the Museum of Byzantine Culture\, Thessaloniki\, Greece.\n\nHow did glass move from being a rare luxury in pharaonic Egypt to an everyday material in the Roman and Byzantine world? The turning point was the invention of glassblowing on the Syro-Palestinian coast in the 1st century BC\, which made production faster\, cheaper\, and more versatile. Massive workshops in the eastern Mediterranean supplied raw glass across the empire\, where local artisans transformed it into drinking cups\, perfume flasks\, jewelry\, mosaics\, and window panes. In the Late Roman and Early Byzantine periods\, glass not only served daily needs but also acquired new roles in Christian life: churches gleamed with glittering mosaics\, windows filled sacred spaces with light\, and glass lamps illuminated worship. This talk follows glass on its journey—from the furnaces of the Levant to households\, churches\, and monumental architecture—showing how one innovation reshaped both everyday experience and spiritual expression.\n\nFAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) Lectures are free and open to the public. This event will take place in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall. Light refreshments and food will be provided at 5:30 PM\, with the lecture starting at 6:00 PM.\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Green Economy\, Human Rights and Labor Reform in the Gulf Cooperation Council
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guest lecture with Carlotta Ferrero\, Senior Advisor on Human Rights and Business with the UN Global Compact Network Saudi Arabia.\n \n As GCC governments shift their focus towards economic diversification and future-proofing workforces in the face of the climate emergency\, there is a unique opportunity to advance responsible business practices and worker welfare\, including for migrant workers. The increased focus on sectors such as tourism\, manufacturing\, agriculture\, technology\, and finance will require increased transparency\, corporate responsibility\, and ESG (Environmental\, Social\, Governance) compliance\, of which workers’ rights are an increasing and integral part. SUMMARY:Other:Let's Have a Ball (LGBT History Month Kickoff)
DESCRIPTION:HAVE A BALL at our LGBT History Month kickoff\, featuring performer and house mother Legendary Monica Revlon! The kickoff will emulate the Kiki ballroom scene and provide historical context and personal experiences. The audience will be immersed in show—get ready! \n\nOpen to the U-M community members of all sexualities and genders.\n\nABOUT BALLROOM\nBallroom culture\, drag ball culture\, and the house ballroom community is described as an underground queer subculture in which people \"walk\" (compete)\, perform\, dance\, lip-sync\, and model in different categories. The categories were designed to epitomize and satirize gender constructs\, occupations\, and social class. Connected through hardships\, resistance\, strength\, and joyfulness\, Kiki ballroom scene was created for the youth as a sub-scene of main scene ballroom culture. Representation of ballroom can be seen in shows like Pose\, Legendary\, and other historical documentaries that showcases life as ballroom participants and their legacies.\n\nABOUT LEGENDARY MONICA REVLON\nLon'Dyn M. Hudson (Legendary Monica Revlon) was born in the Jefferies Projects of Detroit Michigan. I was raised and grew up on Detroit's Eastside Mack & Bewick and 7mile area. While attending High School\, I found myself joining the INFINITI Project in 1997. The INFINITI Project was a major part of my life for it taught me life values and also guided me through my confusion of who I was. After graduating high school\, I took what I learned from the INFINITI PROJECT and utilized it to help others. This is where my participation in Community Services came into play. SUMMARY:Performance:Day of Absence
DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite you to attend this semester’s Faculty Studio Production\, *Day of Absence* written by Douglas Turner Ward and directed by Antonio Disla.\n\nThis production reinterprets Douglas Turner Ward's 1965 satire through the lens of cyclical time\, showing that social progress is not always linear or assured. By using clock imagery\, circular staging\, and interruptions in the flow of time\, we create a theatrical experience that immerses the audience in the complexities of history\, where time advances\, pauses\, and sometimes even reverses.\n\nWard's play\, *Day of Absence*\, is set in an imaginary Southern town where all the Black residents suddenly vanish. This powerful work explores the impact of racial absence in modern society. First performed in 1965\, it highlights how white communities depend on Black labor and depicts the chaos that erupts when all Black residents disappear.\n\nCONTENT ADVISORY\n\n*Day of Absence* (1965) by Douglas Turner Ward is a satire that uses humor and exaggeration to critique racism in America. Audience members should be aware that their presence in the world you are about to enter will require you to experience \n\n- Whiteface as racial commentary (actors performing exaggerated portrayals of white characters — sometimes referred to as \"whiteface minstrelsy\")\n- Racial slurs and offensive language\n- Stereotypes\, bias\, and caricatures used intentionally to highlight the absurdity of bigotry and erasure\n\nWhile these depictions are racially specific\, Ward’s satire also comments on the universality of prejudice and oppression based on identity or affinity.\n\n*Free reservations are required\, and seating is limited!*\n\nPlease reserve your seats at this link:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/day-of-absence-tickets-1633164030579?aff=oddtdtcreator\n\n\nSHOW DATES\nThursday\, October 2 at 7 pm\nFriday\, October 3 at 7:30 pm\nSaturday\, October 4 at 2 pm

SUMMARY:Performance:Nigamon/Tunai
DESCRIPTION:In the heart of a forest of sound\, Canadian artist Émilie Monnet and Colombian artist Waira Nina deliver a poetic manifesto inspired by the bonds of friendship and solidarity.\n\nNigamon / Tunai (the words translate to “song” in the Anishinaabemowin and Inga languages) is an immersive performance ritual rooted in the presence of the natural world and co-exists with the audience\, who are in close proximity to the performers on the Power Center stage.\n\nAt the crossroads of friendship and resistance\, the two women invite us to listen deeply and to understand the knowledge and struggles that link their respective cultures: the depletion and plundering of natural resources that are core to their existence.\n\nInterweaving immersive performance and audio documentary with Indigenous knowledge and voices\, this mesmerizing new theatrical work invites audiences into ritualized listening\, and to feel the sound vibrations emitted by the surrounding water\, stones\, copper\, and tree trunks. Linked by the figure of the turtle\, which is central to both of their origin stories\, the two women form an effective alliance advocating for the protection of water\, land\, stars\, and ancestral knowledge.\n\nLooking for free student tickets? All U-M undergraduate students are eligible to receive a FREE ticket to a UMS performance per academic year through the Bert’s Ticket program (a $20 value)!

SUMMARY:Performance:VOICES feat. Jade Nicole
DESCRIPTION:Jade Nicole is a singer/songwriter and background vocalist from the Metro Detroit area. Since a teenager\, Jade has used songwriting as a tool to understand the world around them and the world within them. This process began a decade long journey of finding their voice\, getting comfortable with sharing\, and trusting in their vision and dreams. Now\, with the goal of inviting people to cry at their shows\, Jade shares personal and vulnerable stories of their life and relationships through deeply honest lyrics and heartfelt melodies. Over time\, Jade learned that their art is most powerful when it is shared with others\, vulnerably and with intention. To be witnessed is to be alive\, and this is something dear to the heart of this artist.\n\nVoices is a series of artist-cultivated concerts at The Ark conceived and created by Ann Arbor musician Kyler Wilkins\, AKA vocal looping artist Ki5. The series seeks to expand the representation of Michigan BIPOC artists and audiences at The Ark. Each show\, intentional time will be taken to get to know each artist in the form of brief interviews and musical breaks to have them speak about their journey as musicians and performers with the hope that people in the audience are more connected to and inspired by those voices.

SUMMARY:Performance:Ebird & Friends Holiday Show
DESCRIPTION:For 18 years Erin Zindle has been curating an epic annual musical celebration inspired by the themes of the holiday season. Each December\, this event is a warm hearted lift-off to the holidays that has become an indispensable tradition for families in the greater Ann Arbor area and far beyond. Zindle\, The Ragbirds’ songwriter\, lead singer and multi-instrumentalist\, produces this gala event with the intention of joyfully interconnecting the performers and audiences of the Michigan music community. A star-studded “house band” along with a horn section\, string section and backup singers\, lays the foundation for guest vocalists to shine. \n\nThis year’s featured artists include avant-garde\, folk-soul cellist Jordan Hamilton\, gutsy garage-rock singer-songwriter Elisabeth Pixley-Fink\, beloved Ann Arbor folk-bender Billy King\, looper\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer Ki-5\, indie folk-rock singer-songwriter Dylan Charles and incendiary Outlaw-Americana duo Ember & Ash (Erin Zindle and Alex Holycross\, of The Native Howl)\n\nThe show’s strength is its diversity\, with a wide range of song styles highlighting the incredibly talented instrumentalists and vocalists within the group. Creative arrangements of original songs\, new modern hits\, and traditional carols make this show unlike any other - it’s truly “not your mama’s Christmas show”. Master of Ceremonies comedienne Shelly Smith guides listeners through the experience with laughter and good cheer.
