SUMMARY:Film Screening:2025 Halaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Xoftex tells the story of a Palestinian-Syrian teenager waiting for asylum in a Greek refugee camp.\nAvailable to stream from Oct 1-15\n\nPre-order the film anytime\, and check out the rest of the month’s Halaloween Horror Film selection!\nhttp://watch.eventive.org/halaloween.\n\n\nWelcome to the 7th annual Halaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival 2025!\n\nWhat is Halaloween? Halaloween screens horror films from across the globe that were made by\, for\, or about Muslims\, to understand: “What scares Muslim audiences? Are horror movies halal?”\n\nThis year’s 2025 film festival runs throughout October on Tuesdays. Halaloween will showcase one film streaming online from October 1-15\; a montage of short films in-person at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn on Tuesday\, October 14 at 7pm\; and two in-person screenings at the State Theatre\, on Tuesday October 21 and 28 at 7pm.\n\nThe festival is free in-person and online–but make sure to reserve tickets! In-person screenings will be first-come\, first-served with RSVPs strongly encouraged.\n\nWe are inclusive of everyone's film needs: from new horror fans who close their eyes through most scary movies\, to those who love the gore–we've got films for everyone! Check the Halaloween Horror Rating in the description of each film for its scariness rating and other details.\n\n\nThe 2025 Halaloween Lineup:\n\nOctober 1-15: Xoftex | Greece/Palestine/Syria | 2024 | Online Screening\nOctober 14: Short Films | Saudi Arabia\, Syria\, Mauritania\, Morocco\, Tunisia | 7:00pm | Arab American National Museum (Dearborn) \nOctober 21: Agora | Tunisia | 2024 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\nOctober 28: Algiers | Algeria | 2024 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\n\nRSVP & stream our online selection: https://watch.eventive.org/halaloween\n\n\nSTREAM ONLINE FROM OCTOBER 1-15\nXOFTEX | 2024 | 99 mins | Directed by Noez Deshe\n\nPalestinian-Syrian teenager Nasser and his older brother Yassin have been living in a Greek refugee camp\, awaiting a decision on their asylum application. They pass the time recording comedy sketches and fantasizing about making zombie films and moving to Sweden. Nasser\, however\, feels increasingly trapped in this No Man’s Land. With nowhere to escape\, boiling tensions in the camp push Nasser to another reality. Highly experimental filmmaking.\n\nDirector Noaz Deshe works as a director and musician. He composed the soundtrack of Babak Jalali’s FRONTIER BLUES (2009)\, and was the cinematographer of the Tiger winner RADIO DREAMS (2016). His debut feature film WHITE SHADOW (2013) about a young albino person won the Lion of the Future Award at Venice Film Festival and was showcased at Sundance Film Festival. XOFTEX (2024) is his second feature film\, selected for FilmFest München. In addition to his artistic work\, he has worked as a volunteer on sea rescue missions and in refugee camps.\n\nHalaloween Horror Rating: 2/5 Pumpkins \n\nRating explanation: Not very scary\, but eerie\, experimental\, and suspenseful. Purposefully experimental to capture the difficulty of being in a refugee camp. Content warnings: drowning death\, monsters\, zombie references\, refugee camps\, hunger\, and fleeing war. Religious content: Islamic prayer.\n\n\n----\n\nHalaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival\, is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center and cosponsored by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, & the Middle Eastern Studies Department. SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Artist Showcase: Historicization\, Art\, and the Socio-Politics of India: An Artist's Perspective
DESCRIPTION:This lecture examines the intersections of historicization\, material culture\, and socio-political struggle in India through an interdisciplinary art practice that engages with Ajrakh block printing\, indigo dye\, and khadi cloth. Working outside the academy yet in sustained dialogue with postcolonial theory\, Jyoti uses textile-based installations as “visual essays” to reframe histories of colonial exploitation\, migration\, and resistance.\n\nDrawing on works such as Indigo: The Blue Gold and The 18th Century Merchant Ship\, Jyoti interrogates how indigo functioned as both commodity and instrument of colonial capitalism. In Faceless Journeys\, anonymity becomes a metaphor for the erasure of migrant subjectivities\, while The Khadi March: Just Five Meters reanimates Gandhi’s call for swadeshi by situating khadi within contemporary debates on sustainability and rural livelihoods.\n\nJyoti's practice approaches textiles as living archives that embody transnational exchanges and subaltern histories\, tracing their movements from Sindh and Gujarat to global circuits of trade and consumption. By employing materiality—cloth\, color\, and motif—as sites of memory and resistance\, she explores how art can perform the work of historicization and offer critical interventions into postcolonial discourse.\n\nThe lecture invites reflection on how creative practices might be read as forms of scholarship\, challenging conventional boundaries between archive and artwork\, academic and artisan\, past and present.\n\nPlease register at https://myumi.ch/qZ213 to receive the Zoom link before the event.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Xu Shi\, Associate Professor\, Biostatistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Unmeasured confounding remains one of the most significant threats to the credibility of findings from observational studies. Recent developments in negative control methods\, also known as proximal causal inference\, offer promising strategies to strengthen causal conclusions. These approaches leverage negative controls —variables that have no direct causal relationship with either the exposure or the outcome — to detect and adjust for unmeasured confounding. In this talk\, I will review the foundations of negative control methods and introduce the double negative control framework. I will then present our recent work extending this framework to settings where some candidate negative control variables may themselves be invalid. I will conclude with a discussion of open challenges and future research directions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:To Sell or For Sale: Strategic Entry in Pharmaceutical Markets (joint with Zoey Chopra and Garth Strohbehn)
DESCRIPTION:Increasing consolidation in the pharmaceutical industry has prompted antitrust concerns and calls for enhanced scrutiny and regulation surrounding M&A activity\, particularly regarding acquisitions of small and innovative biotechs. Holding firm entry fixed\, such policy should encourage competition and limit the ability of incumbent firms to acquire early-stage competitors. In resource-intensive industries such as pharmaceuticals\, however\, firms make entry decisions conditional upon eventual exit strategies. Limitations to M&A activity may reduce incentives for biotech entry\, ultimately resulting in less innovation and welfare losses. Leveraging M&A and drug development data in oncology from 2006 to 2019 we document three facts: 1. Big pharmaceutical firms constitute the majority of controlling interest acquisitions\; 2. The probability of acquisition is strongly associated with the entry choice of small biotech drugs but there is no association for big pharmaceutical drugs\; and 3. The acquisition price for a drug increases when the acquiring firm has an overlapping development pipeline. These insights inform a structural model in which acquisitions are the result of a first-price sealed bid auction that informs a static firm entry and market choice decision for new drugs. We find that a counterfactual which restricts the ability of big pharma firms to acquire overlapping biotech drugs significantly changes the market choice of biotech drugs\, but we do not find a significant change in overall biotech drug entry\, suggesting such a policy would have minimal welfare costs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)\nPhase 1 Curatorial Statement\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Amelia Burns (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Erin McKenna (courtyard pillar)\nArtists Amelia Burns and Erin McKenna reimagine the Division Street pillars through digital collages rooted in memory\, landscape and shared environments. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Website / Instagram\nErin McKenna Erin McKenna is an interdisciplinary artist with a background in sculpture. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. With a feminist lens\, she explores the space where necessity meets excess\, highlighting the subversive potential of both. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. Her process follows personal rules:\nno hierarchy of materialssubvert expected usecomplicate binaries\, stereotypes and associationsmisuse\, misapplyallow for variable arrangementsrepeat\, reiterate\, reuseconsider the subversive possibilities of the excessive\, fantastic\, and necessaryalways let the labor be visible\nMcKenna earned her BFA from Columbus College of Art &amp\; Design in 2012 and later completed her MFA at Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan. She recently moved back to the forest she calls home in Southeastern Ohio\, where she serves as Exhibitions Director at The Dairy Barn Arts Center\, hunts for mushrooms with her toddler\, and makes quilts. SUMMARY:Other:500 Fridays: Data Centers and Climate: Research Lightning Talks
DESCRIPTION:How can we make digital infrastructure more sustainable? Join UMSI during Climate Week for a series of lightning talks by University of Michigan researchers exploring the impact of data centers on communities and the environment. Each speaker will present thought-provoking insights into topics around data centers such as environmental impacts and urban planning.\n\nFeatured Speakers: Ben Green\, Molly Kleinman\, Xiaofan Liang\n\nWhat Happens When Data Centers Come to Town? (Ben Green)\nThis talk explores the impacts of data centers on communities. Despite promises of economic benefits\, data centers come with a myriad of costs\, including increased utility rates\, high resource consumption\, and pollution. From Washtenaw County to across the globe\, communities are now pushing back against data center projects. To mitigate data centers’ environmental impacts\, policymakers should introduce requirements for new renewable energy and enforce transparency through mandatory reporting.\n\nSpeaker: Ben Green is an assistant professor in the University of Michigan School of Information and an assistant professor (by courtesy) in the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. He holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University\, with a secondary field in Science\, Technology\, and Society. Ben studies the ethics and impacts of algorithms\, with a focus on algorithmic fairness\, human-algorithm interactions\, and AI regulation. Through his research\, Ben aims to support design and governance practices that prevent algorithmic harms and advance social justice. His first book\, The Smart Enough City: Putting Technology in Its Place to Reclaim Our Urban Future\, was published in 2019 by MIT Press. He is working on a second book\, Algorithmic Realism: Data Science Practices to Promote Social Justice. Ben is also a faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard.\n\nUnderstanding Community Opposition to Data Centers (Molly Kleinman)\nAs public awareness of the impacts of data centers has grown\, many local groups are organizing to oppose and resist data centers in their communities. Based on the work of the Science\, Technology\, and Public Policy program's Community Partnerships Initiative\, this presentation will provide an overview of the longstanding environmental justice issues facing Southeast Michigan residents that inform and shape residents' responses to data centers.\n\nSpeaker: Molly Kleinman serves as the Managing Director of the Science\, Technology\, and Public Policy program. In this role\, Molly oversees the day-to-day management and provides strategic direction for STPP. Molly brings over 15 years of experience across several areas of higher education\, with much of her work centering on technology policy\, educational technology\, and intellectual property. She also has an interest in urban and transportation policy\; she is a past chair of the Ann Arbor Transportation Commission\, serves as an elected trustee of the Ann Arbor District Library\, and co-hosts the Ann Arbor AF podcast. Molly received her Ph.D. in Higher Education Policy from the University of Michigan Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education\, her M.S. in Information from the University of Michigan School of Information\, and her B.A. in English and Gender Studies from Bryn Mawr College.\n\nGoverning Data Center in Urban Planning (Xiaofan Liang)\nA core part of urban planning is to manage our built environment\, and AI has a physical footprint as well. What kinds of land use do data centers fall into? What are the planning and communication considerations of sitting a data center? Prof. Liang will share challenges and questions that urban planners face when a data center comes to town\, existing planning practices\, and a few on-going research projects that aim to unpack data center's complexity in urban and regional planning. \n\nSpeaker: Xiaofan Liang is an Assistant Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, University of Michigan. Liang is also an affiliated faculty with Michigan Institute for Data & AI in Society and the UM Center for the Study of Complex Systems. Liang’s current work focuses on two themes: 1) Urban Network: how network infrastructure (e.g.\, social\, transportation\, digital\, etc.) plays a dual role to offer connectivity but also exclude locals at the same time\, 2) Urban AI\, exploring how data\, technology\, and AI can support\, transform\, or challenge planning practices and public services and the human agency to elevate the benefits and mitigate the harms. Liang invites prospective PhD students to apply for the upcoming admission cycle! https://www.xiaofanliang.com/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibition. \"Between Voice and Silence\"
DESCRIPTION:CREES is delighted to support the international art exhibition Between Voice and Silence. Dedicated to the fallen Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov\, the exhibit’s title is borrowed from one of his poems. Exploring the role of empathy and humanity in the times of crisis\, Ukrainian and American artists Katya Lisova (textiles)\, Matvii Vaisberg (prints)\, and Ira Bondarenko (ceramics) reflect on the power and limits of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\n\nThe exhibition\, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan’s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5\, 2025\, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. The Ann Arbor Chapter of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America (UNWLA) also provided support for the project. \n \n Image: *Fly* by Katya Lisova\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

As climate change continues\, how do artists\, architects and designers need to reconsider how they do their work? How might students incorporate environmental justice into their emerging artistry? \n\nIn this interactive conversation\, facilitated by U-M Faculty Director of Arts Research/Creative Practice Clare Croft\, artists\, architects and arts administrators–from across U-M and Southeast Michigan–will share approaches to these necessary and contemporary questions. Together\, we’ll look at examples of how all of us in the arts are shifting how we work and/or amplifying particular aspects of our practice in response to climate change and other environmental realities.\n\nAs part of the gathering\, upcoming U-M funding opportunities at the intersection of arts and environment will be discussed.\n\nJointly sponsored by OVPR and Arts Initiative\, and also part of U-M Climate Week

DESCRIPTION:Despite being a violation of social norms\, practices of deception are prevalent in organizations and markets. While existing research has focused on cases of clear-cut fraud\, this article studies occupations that operate in a gray zone of deception: they cannot be simply defined as fraudulent\, but the potential for deceit casts a shadow of suspicion across their practices. We ask: how and when do members of emerging occupations navigate a shadow of suspicion about their work? Drawing on comparative ethnographic data\, we examine the tactics enacted by members of two emerging occupations—career coaches and technology platform evangelists—in their attempts at navigating suspicions of deception. We find that members of both occupations employ a set of tactics that reveal surprising similarities and meaningful differences in how they navigate this shadow of suspicion. Together\, we refer to these tactics as moral offense: rather than defending their own probity\, they accuse relevant others—social systems\, the [audience’s] self\, their doubters—of moral failings as a means of normalizing their practices. Their primary tool in moral offense is a symbolic binary between the “old” and the “new” economy. Occupational members leverage this binary to stir up the anxious uncertainty experienced by their audiences\, leading them through a process of disorientation and reorientation that they in turn use to construct their moral authority as guides to the unknown. In doing so\, these occupational members implicitly reframe structural problems of precarity and uncertainty in the new economy into a call for individual moral awakening and updating of moral orientations. Findings contribute to organizational and sociological theories of deception\, occupations\, and morality in economic life.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A probabilistic bijection for non-attacking fillings (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Based on the connection to one-dimensional interacting particle models--the ASEP and the TAZRP--and the combinatorial objects (multiline queues) that make these connections explicit\, a tableau formula was found for the modified Macdonald polynomial in terms of the so-called `queue inversion' statistic. This statistic naturally reflects the dynamics of the TAZRP. In this talk\, we present a new tableau formula for the symmetric Macdonald polynomials\, using the same queue inversion statistic on non-attacking tableaux. Central to our approach is a probabilistic bijection on non-attacking fillings that enables swapping of entries between columns. Our techniques extend to fillings of composition shapes\, leading to symmetry results for permuted basement Macdonald polynomials.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Leveraging data\, physical models\, and the Koopman operator to make soft robots more capable
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Soft robots are able to safely interact with delicate objects\, absorb impacts without damage\, and adapt to the shape of their environment\, making them ideal for applications that require safe robot-human interaction. However\, their use in real-world applications has been limited due to the difficulty of controlling them given their nonlinear dynamics and many degrees-of-freedom. In this talk\, I’ll introduce a residual modeling and control approach that leverages Koopman operator theory to construct linear representations of nonlinear dynamical systems\, enabling the use of efficient linear techniques to control soft robots. Using this Koopman-based approach\, a pneumatically actuated soft arm was able to perform real-world manipulation tasks such as trajectory following\, pick-and-place with a variable payload\, and writing on a dry-erase board without undergoing any task-specific training. This approach improves the capabilities of soft robots\, enabling their more widespread adoption in real-world applications.\n\nContact: Silas Alben

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Brian Arbic\, Eunice Konadu Asamoah\, Mariam Maku Swaleh
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss our decade-long efforts to help develop a truly global ocean science community through summer schools. The Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School In Nigeria and Ghana (COESSING\; https://coessing.org) has been held for one week every year since 2015. COESSING alternates between Ghana and Nigeria. We held our tenth anniversary COESSING in Ghana in August 2025. From 2025-2028\, the West African COESSING school will be embedded within the large Ocean Margins Initiative (OMI) research project (~9M USD)\, supported by Schmidt Sciences. OMI funding allows for \"big ocean science\" to be done on an unprecedented scale in the Gulf of Guinea. The connections developed within the COESSING summer school were essential in the genesis of the Schmidt-funded OMI project\, and COESSING will serve as a meeting and networking forum for that project. Plans to hold the 2026 COESSING in Nigeria are already underway. Over ten years\, we have had about 1000 in-person participants and about 250 in-person instructors at COESSING. Instruction has evolved towards hands-on research tracks in areas such as Marine Plastics\, Physical Oceanography\, Biogeochemistry\, Fisheries Management\, and the Ocean Margins Initiative. In September 2025\, we held the inaugural Coastal Ocean School in the Western Indian Ocean (COES-WIO)\, at Technical University of Mombasa\, again with a focus on research tracks. COES-WIO featured about 75 in-person participants from around the Western Indian Ocean region\, and about 20 in-person instructors from around the world. We have funding to run COES-WIO in 2026. Pending further funding\, we plan to rotate the school around different schools in the region. Our summer schools hosted in Ghana\, Nigeria and Kenya allow scientists from the US\, Europe\, and elsewhere to travel to African countries\, and see the challenges and opportunities in conducting ocean science in Africa for themselves. Countless collaborations\, small and large\, have been set up as a consequence of these schools. We are having ongoing discussions about creating more such schools in different parts of the world\, including Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands region.

SUMMARY:Performance:Day of Absence
DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite you to attend this semester’s Faculty Studio Production\, *Day of Absence* written by Douglas Turner Ward and directed by Antonio Disla.\n\nThis production reinterprets Douglas Turner Ward's 1965 satire through the lens of cyclical time\, showing that social progress is not always linear or assured. By using clock imagery\, circular staging\, and interruptions in the flow of time\, we create a theatrical experience that immerses the audience in the complexities of history\, where time advances\, pauses\, and sometimes even reverses.\n\nWard's play\, *Day of Absence*\, is set in an imaginary Southern town where all the Black residents suddenly vanish. This powerful work explores the impact of racial absence in modern society. First performed in 1965\, it highlights how white communities depend on Black labor and depicts the chaos that erupts when all Black residents disappear.\n\nCONTENT ADVISORY\n\n*Day of Absence* (1965) by Douglas Turner Ward is a satire that uses humor and exaggeration to critique racism in America. Audience members should be aware that their presence in the world you are about to enter will require you to experience \n\n- Whiteface as racial commentary (actors performing exaggerated portrayals of white characters — sometimes referred to as \"whiteface minstrelsy\")\n- Racial slurs and offensive language\n- Stereotypes\, bias\, and caricatures used intentionally to highlight the absurdity of bigotry and erasure\n\nWhile these depictions are racially specific\, Ward’s satire also comments on the universality of prejudice and oppression based on identity or affinity.\n\n*Free reservations are required\, and seating is limited!*\n\nPlease reserve your seats at this link:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/day-of-absence-tickets-1633164030579?aff=oddtdtcreator\n\n\nSHOW DATES\nThursday\, October 2 at 7 pm\nFriday\, October 3 at 7:30 pm\nSaturday\, October 4 at 2 pm

SUMMARY:Performance:Nigamon/Tunai
DESCRIPTION:In the heart of a forest of sound\, Canadian artist Émilie Monnet and Colombian artist Waira Nina deliver a poetic manifesto inspired by the bonds of friendship and solidarity.\n\nNigamon / Tunai (the words translate to “song” in the Anishinaabemowin and Inga languages) is an immersive performance ritual rooted in the presence of the natural world and co-exists with the audience\, who are in close proximity to the performers on the Power Center stage.\n\nAt the crossroads of friendship and resistance\, the two women invite us to listen deeply and to understand the knowledge and struggles that link their respective cultures: the depletion and plundering of natural resources that are core to their existence.\n\nInterweaving immersive performance and audio documentary with Indigenous knowledge and voices\, this mesmerizing new theatrical work invites audiences into ritualized listening\, and to feel the sound vibrations emitted by the surrounding water\, stones\, copper\, and tree trunks. Linked by the figure of the turtle\, which is central to both of their origin stories\, the two women form an effective alliance advocating for the protection of water\, land\, stars\, and ancestral knowledge.\n\nLooking for free student tickets? All U-M undergraduate students are eligible to receive a FREE ticket to a UMS performance per academic year through the Bert’s Ticket program (a $20 value)!

SUMMARY:Performance:Amythyst Kiah
DESCRIPTION:A blend of folk\, blues\, Americana and rock with wistful\, cutting lyrics\n\nProduced by Butch Walker (Taylor Swift\, Green Day\, Weezer) and recorded at his Nashville studio\, Amythyst Kiah’s new album Still + Bright explores the vast expanse of her inner world: her deep-rooted affinity for Eastern philosophies and spiritual traditions\, a near-mystical connection with the natural world\, the life lessons learned in her formative years as a self-described “anime-nerd mall goth.” In dreaming up the backdrop to her revelatory storytelling\, Kiah and Walker arrived at a darkly cinematic and exhilarating twist on the rootsy alt-rock of her 2021 breakthrough album Wary + Strange—an LP that landed on Rolling Stone’s list of the 25 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2021 and drew acclaim from major outlets like Pitchfork. With its sonic palette encompassing everything from fuzzed-out guitars and industrial-leaning beats to gilded pedal steel and Kiah’s exquisitely graceful banjo work\, Still + Bright fully affirms her as an artist of both daring originality and uncompromising depth.\n\nOn Wary + Strange\, Kiah offered up a collection of spellbinding songs detailing her experience with grief and trauma and alienation\, each illuminating the extraordinary impact of her songwriting. An electrifying showcase for her singular musicality and soul-stirring voice\, Kiah’s Rounder Records debut soon found many leading critics hailing her as a formidable new talent\, adding to a list of accolades that includes earning a Grammy nomination for her powerhouse anthem “Black Myself.”\n\nWhile Still + Bright undoubtedly finds Kiah pushing into new emotional and musical terrain\, the album also makes for a vital new addition to a body of work largely dedicated to exploring the struggle and joy of true self-discovery. “With all of my music\, I’d love to leave people with the feeling that it’s okay to go off the beaten path and to structure your life in a way that feels right to you\,” says Kiah. “And just like with the last record\, I hope that these songs can help people out if they’re going through a difficult time. That’s what I always hope for more than anything: for my music to continue to be a part of the healing process for anyone who might need it.”
