DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world.   Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate.  This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Please join The Forum for Research in Medieval Studies (FoRMS) on Monday\, October 6th\, in Tisch 1014 for our first workshop! This week will include presentations from Davis Elordi (History) and Yueling Li (History of Art). Lunch will be provided\, so please remember to register through Sessions if you are thinking of coming. The abstracts and titles for their talks are included below. \n\nDavis Elordi (History): Dual Converso Prophets and the Improvisation of Faith\n\nThis paper explores the cultural\, theological\, and class differences between the extant writings of colonial Latin America’s only two “crypto-Jews.” Crypto-Jew is a historiographical label applied to individuals\, baptized in the Catholic Church\, of clandestine Jewish heritage accused of practicing the “Law of Moses” and the faith of their ancestors. This paper seeks to disprove previous scholarly assertions of a collective identity and emphasize these crypto-Jews' differences. Questions of identity and class among this group remain largely unexplored outside Iberia\, in part because reading with the archival grain encourages the scholar to identify groups of mercantile \"Jews\" secretly colluding against the Spanish Empire.\n\nLuis de Carvajal\, el mozo\, and Francisco Maldonado de Silva’s writings provide a contrast to the typical documentation of Ibero-American crypto-Jews. Both freely professed their adherence to the Law of Moses\, and they left behind writings containing their religious beliefs and radical self-reinventions\, inspired by Roman Catholic texts. Carvajal left behind a memoir when he was executed in 1596\; Maldonado de Silva wrote hundreds of letters and journals\, of which we only possess three pieces of writing after his death in 1639. Carvajal\, posturing as a member of Spanish nobility\, and Maldonado de Silva\, an educated surgeon\, reflect the differences within their social standings. They reflect the limits and potentialities of biblical exegesis in the Spanish Empire\, as they both improvised forms of religiosity. \n\nYueling Li (Art History): Writing in Sino-Islamic Arts in Ming and Qing China\n\nMy project explores epigraphic traces of Islam in China from the 16th to 19th century\, paying particular attention to manuscripts\, ceramics\, and portable vessels. I argue that development in script\, format and decoration of Sino-Islamic manuscript played a role in consolidating the formation of a local identity and fostering a sense of belongingment for Muslims in Ming and Qing China\, when the intersection of ethnicity\, religion\, class and language struck a delicate balance. Available colophons also testify to active participation of women in the production and transmission of Islam in 17th century China\, supporting contemporary accounts and records in mosques. In parallel to the stylization of book arts\, Arabic and Persian inscriptions on Chinese porcelain\, embroidery\, bronze and jade transforms imperial and common objects to carry an extra layer of significance\, as vessels for ritual and everyday use\, sources of magic and protection\, markers of Muslim identity\, and expressions of individuals’ faith. In other words\, this project aims to push forward an understanding of the macroscopic transmission of religious and intellectual knowledge\, and the socio-political networks of Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1911) China through a microscopic and material lens.

DESCRIPTION:This talk will present the progress constructing and commissioning the Vera C. Rubin Observatory with a particular focus on the role an astronomer plays in this process. The talk will begin with a brief history of imaging surveys\, motivating the construction of the Rubin Observatory. This will continue with describing some important phases and milestones of commissioning as well as presenting many of the major systems that constitute the observatory. The talk will conclude with a look ahead for science with Rubin Observatory and how data\, including the already available DP1\, can be accessed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships: R. Chris Fraley
DESCRIPTION:R. Chris Fraley of the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign joins the RCGD Fall Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships.\n\nThere are vast individual differences in the ways in which people relate to significant others in their lives. Some people\, for example\, are relatively secure in their relationships: They are comfortable opening up to others and having others depend on them. Other people\, in contrast\, are insecure: They are uncomfortable depending on others and worry that others will not be available when needed. Social and personality psychologists refer to these kinds of individual differences as \"attachment styles.\" In this talk R. Chris Fraley will review research on why some people are more secure than others. This talk convers five conclusions that have emerged from research over the past two decades-- with discussion of some of the challenges and opportunities involved in changing people's attachment styles.\n\nR. Chris Fraley is a Professor at the University of Illinois's Department of Psychology. He received his PhD from the University of California\, Davis in 1999 in Social-Personality Psychology. In 2007 he received the American Psychological Association's Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology in the area of Individual Differences. In 2025 he received the Carol and Ed Diener Mid-Career Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. He has served as an Associate Editor at the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.\n\nChris's research involves the study of attachment processes in close relationships\, personality dynamics and development\, and research methods (with an emphasis on open science and dynamic modeling). The majority of his research is focused on understanding why some people are more secure than others in their close relationships\, the implications of attachment (in)security for psychological well-being and relationship functioning\, and how attachment patterns change over time.\n\nAbout the series:\n\nHumans are social animals and from the earliest days of life\, are dependent on the quality of social relationships with significant others: family\, kin\, friends\, and a growing social network of online acquaintances. But\, how do we conduct research and come to understand the social processes transpiring in these significant social connections with others? What are the consequences for individual development and mental health outcomes of having close intimate relationships in one’s life? There is also a darker side to some relationships in the form of violence\, aggression\, and conflict. How do we study these processes? Social media and artificial intelligence have opened up new ways of thinking about “what is a social relationship?” and how many of these “friends” can one truly have. \n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on different types of social relationships\, spanning family and parent-child relationships\, friendships\, peer networks\, romantic relationships\, attachment relationships\, and the use of online media to maintain social connections. Although several speakers are senior scholars with extensive research backgrounds in the field\, many are junior scholars who are traversing new paths into the science of social relationships. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: A generalization of Elkies’ theorem on infinitely many supersingular primes
DESCRIPTION:In 1987\, Elkies proved that every elliptic curve defined over Q has infinitely many supersingular primes. In this talk\, I will present an extension of this result to certain abelian fourfolds in Mumford’s families and more generally\, to certain families of Kuga-Satake abelian varieties. I will review Elkies’ proof and explain how his strategy of intersecting with CM cycles can be adapted to our setting. I will also discuss some of the techniques in our proof to study the local properties of the CM cycles.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Student Combinatorics: Braid Varieties\, Weaves\, and Splicings
DESCRIPTION:Braid varieties are a large class of flag configuration spaces that include (open) Richardson varieties. In 2022\, Casals et al. showed that the coordinate rings of these varieties carry a cluster structure by using weaves\, a diagrammatic calculus created in connection to symplectic knot theory. In 2025\, motivated by results in link homology\, Gorsky et al. constructed splicing maps identifying certain principal open subsets of a braid variety with a direct product of smaller braid varieties and conjectured these maps behave well with regards to the cluster structure. In this talk\, we explain these results and propose a weave construction that helps study the cluster structure behavior under the splicing map.

DESCRIPTION:Guest artist Alex Johnson presents a carillon master class. Free and open to the public\; presented in conjunction with the 2025 U-M Organ Conference: \"Ludus Chronalis: Time\, Cadence\, and Temporality in Keyboard Music and Sacred Spaces.\"\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST\n\nALEX JOHNSON is the seventh University Carillonist of the University of Chicago. In this role\, he regularly plays the seventy-two bell\, one-hundred ton Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon for Sunday services\, weddings\, convocations\, and other major university events. He also instructs and advises the twenty members of the UChicago Guild of Carillonists\, a student organization which provides the campus most of its carillon music during the week. Alex serves the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America as chair of the Arrangements & Transcriptions Subcommittee of Music Publications and as a juror for the Johan Franco Composition Committee. Alex has performed across North America\, Europe\, and Australia\, and he is an avid composer\, improviser\, and supporter of new music.\n\nPreviously\, Alex taught high school math in Austin\, Texas\, where he played and taught the carillon informally at the University of Texas. Alex graduated summa cum laude from the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ in Belgium\, and before that he studied in residency as the Carillon Fellow at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales\, Florida. Alex began his carillon studies at the University of Rochester\, from where he obtained a degree in Physics. During his college years\, he studied gamelan and mbira music at Eastman School of Music\, and he spent a semester abroad studying and playing the carillon in Australia at the University of Sydney. In 2019\, Alex won 1st Prize Overall\, Best Performance of a Work by a Belgian Composer\, and the Improvisation Competition at the 8th iteration of the most prestigious carillon competition\, the International Queen Fabiola Carillon Competition\, held in Mechelen\, Belgium. Besides carillon\, Alex enjoys cooking and spending time with nature\, which\, as a Hyde Park local\, means spending lots of time at the Point.

Some questions that researchers have struggled with are 1) Are emotions adaptive or maladaptive? 2) How do thinking and feeling influence each other? 3) How many emotions are there? 4) Are human emotions universal or culturally variable?\n\nAbout the speaker: Phoebe C. Ellsworth is a professor of Psychology (emerita) at the University of Michigan. She is interested in how emotions are produced  by people’s perceptions of their situation and its relevance to their well-being\, and in how individuals and cultures differ in their emotional experience. She received her PhD in Psychology from Stanford University. She is a member of the American Academy or Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Science.\n\nNote that this talk is free and open to the public and will take place at the Ann Arbor District Library's Downtown Branch.

DESCRIPTION:For many cultures across East Asia\, family and friends come together for the mid-autumn Full Moon with festivities\, delicious food\, and good company. The Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, U-M Astronomy\, the Nam Center for Korean Studies\, and the Center Japanese Studies invite you to the Judy & Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory for a celebration of the Mid-Autumn Moon. The evening will include presentations from U-M Astronomy on Chinese lunar astronomy and exploration\, a short musical performance\, tours of the observatory\, and telescope viewing of the Moon! Families are welcome!\n\nAll are welcome as walk-ins and no registration is required. Presentations start at 8PM and repeat at 9PM. \n\nTelescope observing is weather dependent. Additional support by the U-M Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments.
