Are horror movies halal?\u201d\r\n\r\nThis year\u2019s 2025 film festival runs throughout October on Tuesdays. Halaloween will showcase one film streaming online from October 1-15; a montage of short films in-person at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn on Tuesday, October 14 at 7pm; and two in-person screenings at the State Theatre, on Tuesday October 21 and 28 at 7pm.\r\n\r\nThe festival is free in-person and online\u2013but make sure to reserve tickets! In-person screenings will be first-come, first-served with RSVPs strongly encouraged.\r\n\r\nWe are inclusive of everyone's film needs: from new horror fans who close their eyes through most scary movies, to those who love the gore\u2013we've got films for everyone! They pass the time recording comedy sketches and fantasizing about making zombie films and moving to Sweden. Nasser, however, feels increasingly trapped in this No Man\u2019s Land. With nowhere to escape, boiling tensions in the camp push Nasser to another reality. Highly experimental filmmaking.\r\n\r\nDirector Noaz Deshe works as a director and musician. He composed the soundtrack of Babak Jalali\u2019s FRONTIER BLUES (2009), and was the cinematographer of the Tiger winner RADIO DREAMS (2016). His debut feature film WHITE SHADOW (2013) about a young albino person won the Lion of the Future Award at Venice Film Festival and was showcased at Sundance Film Festival. XOFTEX (2024) is his second feature film, selected for FilmFest M\u00fcnchen. In addition to his artistic work, he has worked as a volunteer on sea rescue missions and in refugee camps.\r\n\r\nHalaloween Horror Rating: 2\/5 Pumpkins \r\n\r\nRating explanation: Not very scary, but eerie, experimental, and suspenseful. Last year, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art & Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building, and the creative possibilities ahead. Her work described as \u201cwilderness-based, science-inspired\u201d, serves as a bridge, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan, led by Professor William Lopez, and the University of Iowa, led by Professor Nicole Novak, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites, spoke to advocates, detainees, their families, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. The abstracts and titles for their talks are included below. \r\n\r\nDavis Elordi (History): Dual Converso Prophets and the Improvisation of Faith\r\n\r\nThis paper explores the cultural, theological, and class differences between the extant writings of colonial Latin America\u2019s only two \u201ccrypto-Jews.\u201d Crypto-Jew is a historiographical label applied to individuals, baptized in the Catholic Church, of clandestine Jewish heritage accused of practicing the \u201cLaw of Moses\u201d and the faith of their ancestors. This paper seeks to disprove previous scholarly assertions of a collective identity and emphasize these crypto-Jews' differences. Questions of identity and class among this group remain largely unexplored outside Iberia, in part because reading with the archival grain encourages the scholar to identify groups of mercantile \"Jews\" secretly colluding against the Spanish Empire.\r\n\r\nLuis de Carvajal, el mozo, and Francisco Maldonado de Silva\u2019s writings provide a contrast to the typical documentation of Ibero-American crypto-Jews. Both freely professed their adherence to the Law of Moses, and they left behind writings containing their religious beliefs and radical self-reinventions, inspired by Roman Catholic texts. Carvajal left behind a memoir when he was executed in 1596; Maldonado de Silva wrote hundreds of letters and journals, of which we only possess three pieces of writing after his death in 1639. Carvajal, posturing as a member of Spanish nobility, and Maldonado de Silva, an educated surgeon, reflect the differences within their social standings. They reflect the limits and potentialities of biblical exegesis in the Spanish Empire, as they both improvised forms of religiosity. \r\n\r\nYueling Li (Art History): Writing in Sino-Islamic Arts in Ming and Qing China\r\n\r\nMy project explores epigraphic traces of Islam in China from the 16th to 19th century, paying particular attention to manuscripts, ceramics, and portable vessels. I argue that development in script, format and decoration of Sino-Islamic manuscript played a role in consolidating the formation of a local identity and fostering a sense of belongingment for Muslims in Ming and Qing China, when the intersection of ethnicity, religion, class and language struck a delicate balance. Available colophons also testify to active participation of women in the production and transmission of Islam in 17th century China, supporting contemporary accounts and records in mosques. In parallel to the stylization of book arts, Arabic and Persian inscriptions on Chinese porcelain, embroidery, bronze and jade transforms imperial and common objects to carry an extra layer of significance, as vessels for ritual and everyday use, sources of magic and protection, markers of Muslim identity, and expressions of individuals\u2019 faith. In other words, this project aims to push forward an understanding of the macroscopic transmission of religious and intellectual knowledge, and the socio-political networks of Ming (1368 - 1644) and Chris Fraley of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign joins the RCGD Fall Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships.\r\n\r\nThere are vast individual differences in the ways in which people relate to significant others in their lives. Some people, for example, are relatively secure in their relationships: They are comfortable opening up to others and having others depend on them. Other people, in contrast, are insecure: They are uncomfortable depending on others and worry that others will not be available when needed. Social and personality psychologists refer to these kinds of individual differences as \"attachment styles.\" In this talk R. Chris Fraley will review research on why some people are more secure than others. This talk convers five conclusions that have emerged from research over the past two decades-- with discussion of some of the challenges and opportunities involved in changing people's attachment styles.\r\n\r\nR. Chris Fraley is a Professor at the University of Illinois's Department of Psychology. He received his PhD from the University of California, Davis in 1999 in Social-Personality Psychology. In 2007 he received the American Psychological Association's Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology in the area of Individual Differences. In 2025 he received the Carol and Ed Diener Mid-Career Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. He has served as an Associate Editor at the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.\r\n\r\nChris's research involves the study of attachment processes in close relationships, personality dynamics and development, and research methods (with an emphasis on open science and dynamic modeling). The majority of his research is focused on understanding why some people are more secure than others in their close relationships, the implications of attachment (in)security for psychological well-being and relationship functioning, and how attachment patterns change over time.\r\n\r\nAbout the series:\r\n\r\nHumans are social animals and from the earliest days of life, are dependent on the quality of social relationships with significant others: family, kin, friends, and a growing social network of online acquaintances. But, how do we conduct research and come to understand the social processes transpiring in these significant social connections with others? What are the consequences for individual development and mental health outcomes of having close intimate relationships in one\u2019s life? There is also a darker side to some relationships in the form of violence, aggression, and conflict. How do we study these processes? Social media and artificial intelligence have opened up new ways of thinking about \u201cwhat is a social relationship?\u201d and how many of these \u201cfriends\u201d can one truly have. \r\n\r\nThe speakers for this series will focus on different types of social relationships, spanning family and parent-child relationships, friendships, peer networks, romantic relationships, attachment relationships, and the use of online media to maintain social connections. Although several speakers are senior scholars with extensive research backgrounds in the field, many are junior scholars who are traversing new paths into the science of social relationships. He also instructs and advises the twenty members of the UChicago Guild of Carillonists, a student organization which provides the campus most of its carillon music during the week. Alex serves the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America as chair of the Arrangements & Transcriptions Subcommittee of Music Publications and as a juror for the Johan Franco Composition Committee. Alex has performed across North America, Europe, and Australia, and he is an avid composer, improviser, and supporter of new music.\n\nPreviously, Alex taught high school math in Austin, Texas, where he played and taught the carillon informally at the University of Texas. Alex graduated summa cum laude from the Royal Carillon School \u2018Jef Denyn\u2019 in Belgium, and before that he studied in residency as the Carillon Fellow at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, Florida. Alex began his carillon studies at the University of Rochester, from where he obtained a degree in Physics. During his college years, he studied gamelan and mbira music at Eastman School of Music, and he spent a semester abroad studying and playing the carillon in Australia at the University of Sydney. In 2019, Alex won 1st Prize Overall, Best Performance of a Work by a Belgian Composer, and the Improvisation Competition at the 8th iteration of the most prestigious carillon competition, the International Queen Fabiola Carillon Competition, held in Mechelen, Belgium.
