SUMMARY:Film Screening:2025 Halaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Xoftex tells the story of a Palestinian-Syrian teenager waiting for asylum in a Greek refugee camp.\nAvailable to stream from Oct 1-15\n\nPre-order the film anytime\, and check out the rest of the month’s Halaloween Horror Film selection!\nhttp://watch.eventive.org/halaloween.\n\n\nWelcome to the 7th annual Halaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival 2025!\n\nWhat is Halaloween? Halaloween screens horror films from across the globe that were made by\, for\, or about Muslims\, to understand: “What scares Muslim audiences? Are horror movies halal?”\n\nThis year’s 2025 film festival runs throughout October on Tuesdays. Halaloween will showcase one film streaming online from October 1-15\; a montage of short films in-person at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn on Tuesday\, October 14 at 7pm\; and two in-person screenings at the State Theatre\, on Tuesday October 21 and 28 at 7pm.\n\nThe festival is free in-person and online–but make sure to reserve tickets! In-person screenings will be first-come\, first-served with RSVPs strongly encouraged.\n\nWe are inclusive of everyone's film needs: from new horror fans who close their eyes through most scary movies\, to those who love the gore–we've got films for everyone! Check the Halaloween Horror Rating in the description of each film for its scariness rating and other details.\n\n\nThe 2025 Halaloween Lineup:\n\nOctober 1-15: Xoftex | Greece/Palestine/Syria | 2024 | Online Screening\nOctober 14: Short Films | Saudi Arabia\, Syria\, Mauritania\, Morocco\, Tunisia | 7:00pm | Arab American National Museum (Dearborn) \nOctober 21: Agora | Tunisia | 2024 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\nOctober 28: Algiers | Algeria | 2024 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\n\nRSVP & stream our online selection: https://watch.eventive.org/halaloween\n\n\nSTREAM ONLINE FROM OCTOBER 1-15\nXOFTEX | 2024 | 99 mins | Directed by Noez Deshe\n\nPalestinian-Syrian teenager Nasser and his older brother Yassin have been living in a Greek refugee camp\, awaiting a decision on their asylum application. They pass the time recording comedy sketches and fantasizing about making zombie films and moving to Sweden. Nasser\, however\, feels increasingly trapped in this No Man’s Land. With nowhere to escape\, boiling tensions in the camp push Nasser to another reality. Highly experimental filmmaking.\n\nDirector Noaz Deshe works as a director and musician. He composed the soundtrack of Babak Jalali’s FRONTIER BLUES (2009)\, and was the cinematographer of the Tiger winner RADIO DREAMS (2016). His debut feature film WHITE SHADOW (2013) about a young albino person won the Lion of the Future Award at Venice Film Festival and was showcased at Sundance Film Festival. XOFTEX (2024) is his second feature film\, selected for FilmFest München. In addition to his artistic work\, he has worked as a volunteer on sea rescue missions and in refugee camps.\n\nHalaloween Horror Rating: 2/5 Pumpkins \n\nRating explanation: Not very scary\, but eerie\, experimental\, and suspenseful. Purposefully experimental to capture the difficulty of being in a refugee camp. Content warnings: drowning death\, monsters\, zombie references\, refugee camps\, hunger\, and fleeing war. Religious content: Islamic prayer.\n\n\n----\n\nHalaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival\, is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center and cosponsored by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, & the Middle Eastern Studies Department. SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Complexity in the Social World: The Challenging Case of Structural Racism
DESCRIPTION:This two-day conference will examine how interdisciplinary collaboration can inform our understanding of structural racism and the way we think about complex topics.\n\nPlease register to attend at https://myumi.ch/2rxWR. Early career scholars may apply for travel awards by Sept. 12\, 2025 at https://myumi.ch/z9je9.\n\n\nThe challenge: With the growth of both big data availability and computing power\, there has been a rapid increase in new methods to understanding complexity in the social world. However\, there may not have been a concurrent growth in the foundations of scientific inquiry\, including complex thinking\, broad causal thinking\, and an integration of theories and frameworks across disciplines to guide empirical tests. Further\, evidence suggests that the academic research model\, with its resource-segregated networks\, narrow scientific\, discipline-specific training\, and focus on measures of short-term productivity\, contributes to a fragmented and even misleading understanding of the social world.\n\nThe rapid growth in racial inequities research through the concept of ‘structural racism’ is a case study in the challenges that arise without a thorough integration of theories drawn from source humanities and humanities-informed social science and with an academic model built on segregated resources that prioritizes short-term products. What has resulted is a literature that\, at times\, sidesteps difficult questions on how to understand the interconnected systems and processes that link racial patterns in social\, economic\, and political life over place and time. \n\nSymposium purpose: This meeting is intended to address the challenges to the social science literature on race and the concept of structural racism. We will convene discussions about social scientific inquiry\, the limitations of the academic research model\, and innovative approaches to the study of racial patterns and inequities while working to desegregate research networks.

Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI SciComm Series: Kate Zernike
DESCRIPTION:In 1999 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology publicly admitted that it had discriminated against the women on its science faculty. That \"extraordinary admission\,\" as the front page of the New York Times described it\, set off a reckoning across the country about the lack of women at the highest levels of science.\n\nThe MIT story started with the quiet efforts of 16 highly accomplished female scientists\, led by Nancy Hopkins\, a molecular biologist who had started her career 30 years earlier believing that science was a pure meritocracy and feminism was an unnecessary relic. Kate Zernike\, the author of \"The Exceptions: Nancy Hopkins and the Fight for Women in Science\" will talk about how Hopkins was emblematic of her generation\, and what the next generation of scientists can learn from the experience of the women at MIT.\n\nA book-signing event will take place immediately following the talk\, at 11:00 a.m. in the Rackham Amphitheater.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute | New architectures for neutral atom quantum computing
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Michigan Memorial Phoenix Project - 2000PML\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91548361604?jst=2\n\nAbstract: I will present recent theoretical and experimental developments on fault-tolerant quantum computing with neutral 171Yb atoms. On the theoretical side\, I will discuss hardware-efficient implementations of error correction leveraging unique features of neutral atom qubits. I will also present experimental realizations of these concepts with physical and logical qubits\, as well as advances in the design and implementation of robust entangling gates. Finally\, I will discuss recent results from a second-generation tweezer array capable of rapid\, continuous mid-circuit atom replacement\, and sketch a path towards unlimited-depth fault-tolerant quantum circuits. \n\nBio\nJeff Thompson is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Princeton\, and is an associated faculty member in the Physics and in the Princeton Materials Institute. His research focuses on developing scalable quantum technologies based on atomic qubits. His group pioneered ytterbium (Yb) neutral atom qubits through a research program spanning fundamental atomic spectroscopy\, the design and implementation of record-fidelity quantum gates\, logical qubit circuits and a novel\, hardware-efficient fault-tolerant quantum computing architecture based on erasure conversion. Thompson’s group is also pursuing the development of modular quantum interconnects using both neutral atom qubits and solid-state rare earth ion defects. In 2024\, Thompson co-founded Logiqal\, Inc. to pursue the development of large-scale modular quantum computers based on Yb qubits.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)\nPhase 1 Curatorial Statement\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Amelia Burns (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Erin McKenna (courtyard pillar)\nArtists Amelia Burns and Erin McKenna reimagine the Division Street pillars through digital collages rooted in memory\, landscape and shared environments. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Website / Instagram\nErin McKenna Erin McKenna is an interdisciplinary artist with a background in sculpture. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. With a feminist lens\, she explores the space where necessity meets excess\, highlighting the subversive potential of both. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. Her process follows personal rules:\nno hierarchy of materialssubvert expected usecomplicate binaries\, stereotypes and associationsmisuse\, misapplyallow for variable arrangementsrepeat\, reiterate\, reuseconsider the subversive possibilities of the excessive\, fantastic\, and necessaryalways let the labor be visible\nMcKenna earned her BFA from Columbus College of Art &amp\; Design in 2012 and later completed her MFA at Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan. She recently moved back to the forest she calls home in Southeastern Ohio\, where she serves as Exhibitions Director at The Dairy Barn Arts Center\, hunts for mushrooms with her toddler\, and makes quilts. SUMMARY:Exhibition:By Means of a Pencil
DESCRIPTION:October 9 – November 5\, 2025\nOpening Reception October 9\, 5:00-8:00 pm\nClosing Reception: November 2\, 2:00-5:00 pm\n\nThe U-M Duderstadt Center Gallery presents By Means of a Pencil a solo exhibition by artist and Stamps School of Art & Design LEO Lecturer I Nathan Byrne.\n\nBy Means of a Pencil brings together a body of work centered around the quirky and enigmatic Swiss author Robert Walser. In this exhibition poetic gestures and nods to Walser are able to flourish as visual forms and objects. The work comprises spontaneous and excessively durational works of drawing\, collage\, and sculpture.\n\nFor years\, I have been intrigued by the author Robert Walser’s mark making which he referred to as his “pencil method” where he would sketch out stories in a radically miniaturized script on diminutive paper fragments. Walser’s pencil method began when he was experiencing severe writer’s cramp and: “hideously and frightfully hated his pen.” He goes on in a letter written in 1927 describing the freeing nature of this process: “I suffered a real breakdown in my hand on account of the pen\, a sort of cramp from whose clutches I slowly\, laboriously freed myself by means of the pencil.”\n\nJust as it was with Walser “by means of a pencil” I was able to make peace with drawing by radically altering the process by which I approached the act itself. Eventually\, this became processes like my transcription drawings\, in which I write out an entire novel as a form of mark making.\n\nWhile this exhibition mines the Walser archive and the spirit of this author\, this work is just as much about me and my immersion in this “world of Walser.” It is about my own engagement with relationships between language and mark making\, language and sculpture\, language and longing.\n\nThis project was made possible by the generous support of Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nPoster design by Sky Christoph.\n\nHours: 12 – 6 pm\, Tues. – Fri. & Sun.\n\nLocation: 2281 Bonisteel Blvd\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Scripting Suicide in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 555\, Weiser Hall. It will not be live-streamed or recorded.\n \n Japan is a nation saddled with centuries of accumulated stereotypes and loaded assumptions about suicide. Many pronouncements have been made about those who have died by their own hand\, while little careful attention has been paid to the words of the dead themselves. In this book talk\, Kirsten Cather explores far-ranging creations by famous 20th and 21st century Japanese writers and little-known amateurs alike – death poems\, suicide notes\, memorials\, suicide maps and manuals\, and works of literature\, film\, and manga. She invites the audience into a discussion of these difficult texts to consider how these words reach out to us to initiate a dialogue with the dead\, one that can reveal why it matters to write into and from the void.\n \n Kirsten Cather has been teaching Japanese literature\, film\, and culture in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin for the past twenty years. Her first book\, *The Art of Censorship in Postwar Japan* (University of Hawai`i Press\, 2012)\, analyzed Japan’s landmark obscenity (*waisetsu*) trials\, from the translation of D.H. Lawrence’s *Lady Chatterley’s Lover* in the 1950s to an erotic manga in 2002. Her most recent book\, *Scripting Suicide in Japan* (UC Press\, 2024)\, considers how and why individuals write and read in the face and wake of suicide.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at cjsevents@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Tools and Technology Seminar by Michelle Kim
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nUnderstanding the genetic basis of complex traits in admixed populations is challenging due to diverse genetic backgrounds\, particularly for highly prevalent diseases. Misinterpreting admixture’s impact can have significant consequences for biomedical research. This study employs advanced computational biology to investigate how admixture shapes the genetic architecture of complex traits and influences GWAS outcomes. Using the forward-in-time population genetic simulator SLiM\, we model trait evolution under admixture by varying the relationship between causal variant effect sizes and selection coefficients while accounting for population size changes and migration across five admixture scenarios. \n\nOur findings reveal that GWAS power is influenced by genetic architecture and population demographic history. Traits with weak correlations between effect size and fitness (e.g.\, anthropometric traits) show higher GWAS power compared to traits with stronger correlations (e.g.\, genetic diseases). Populations with recent bottlenecks exhibit higher GWAS power\, highlighting the role of rare variants. Surprisingly\, fine- mapping ability remains consistent across traits. Empirical validation using data from diverse populations\, including the All of Us database\, supports our simulation predictions. For anthropometric traits like height\, common variants exhibit moderate effects\, while for traits like malignant neoplasms\, rare variants show larger effects and common variants minimal effects. \n\nBy integrating population and complex trait genetics\, this study provides insights into how population history shapes genetic architecture and heritability. Our findings improve understanding of genetic studies in diverse populations\, enabling more accurate biomedical applications and personalized medicine strategies. \n\nAbout The Tools & Technology Seminar Series\n\nThe DCMB Tools and Technology Seminar Series is held in Palmer Commons\, Room 2036\, each Thursday at 12pm EST. Each seminar highlights a computational tool\, technology\, or methodology that is under development or in current use and is of special interest to DCMB and University researchers. Presenters are U-M researchers and students.\n\nThese seminars are live-streamed and recorded and made available for future viewing via the DCMB YouTube Channel.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Museums at Two presentation
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Alexandria Rayburn (Museum Studies Program alumni\; PhD\, Information)\n\nMuseum collections are many things\, but primarily they function as repositories of information\, where data-intensive work has been conducted for decades. Like other knowledge infrastructures\, the information in museum collections is built on installed bases and require highly skilled technicians to maintain these long-lasting digital systems. However\, in representations of this computing work\, women's voices and perspectives are under-appreciated\, even though they have significant labor contributions in this area. \n\nMy dissertation examines the experiences of women working in computing roles within museum collections and seeks to understand their unique approaches to data management. Drawing from this research\, this talk will explore some of the early gendered data practices at both the Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum of Art— two highly regarded institutions whose leadership in early museum computing has had lasting implications on museum best practices\, and the value given to computing tasks like data entry.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:In Search of Wellness: Social media influencers and the transformation of an industry
DESCRIPTION:For more than a decade\, social media influencers have shared their lives with captive audiences hungry to consume entertaining\, aspirational\, and educational content from popular users deemed to be “just like us.” What started as a hobby for many\, has turned into a career for those most adept at navigating technological advances alongside follower expectations. As the influencer industry professionalized in the United States\, niche creators emerged and have become central figures in the lives of individuals looking to restore their health and enhance their well-being. In her talk\, Dr. Mariah L Wellman draws on her current book project to describe the phenomenon of wellness influencers and how they’ve risen to prominence. She details the role of authenticity and expertise in establishing authority within the digital wellness space and the strategies influencers use to spread health information. Finally\, Dr. Wellman discusses the increase in online health misinformation and the rise in institutional experts flocking to social media to debunk influencer-created content.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Regression Discontinuity Design with Distribution-Valued Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:This article introduces a regression discontinuity design for distribution-valued outcomes (R3D)\, extending the standard RDD framework to settings where outcomes are entire distributions rather than single values. This arises when treatment is assigned at the group level (e.g.\, firms\, schools) but the objects of interest are within-group distributions (e.g.\, employee wages\, student test scores). Standard RDDs are not designed for this two-level structure\, as they assume scalar outcomes observed at the same level as treatment assignment. To address this\, I develop a novel approach based on random distributions and show that\, under a mild continuity condition on the average quantile function\, the jump at the cutoff identifies a local average quantile treatment effect. To estimate it\, I propose a distribution-valued local polynomial estimator\, which fits the full quantile curve with a single bandwidth\, avoids quantile crossing\, and yields a meaningful “average distribution”. I derive uniform asymptotic normality\, valid multiplier bootstrap confidence bands\, and a data-driven bandwidth selection method. Simulations demonstrate strong performance and reveal that standard quantile RDD is biased and inconsistent in this setting. An application to U.S. gubernatorial close elections (1984–2010) uncovers an equality–efficiency trade-off under Democratic control\, driven by income reductions at the top of the distribution.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE 899 - Vijay G. Subramanian
DESCRIPTION:Presenter Bio:\n\nVijay Subramanian is a Professor in the ECE Division of the EECS Department at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\; from Fall 2014 to Summer 2024\, he was an Associate Professor at the same institution. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, Champaign\, IL\, USA\, in 1999. He worked at Motorola Inc.\, the Hamilton Institute\, Maynooth\, Ireland\, and the EECS Department\, Northwestern University\, Evanston\, IL\, USA\; he also held an Adjunct Research Associate Professor in CSL and ECE at UIUC. His current research interests are in stochastic analysis\, random graphs\, multi-agent systems\, and game theory (mechanism and information design) with applications to social\, economic\, and technological networks.\n\nAbstract:\n\nMulti-agent systems appear in many engineering and socioeconomic settings\, wherein a group of agents or controllers interact with each other in a shared and possibly non-stationary environment\, and make sequential decisions based on their own information using a (causal) interaction mechanism. \n\nIn this talk\, we focus attention on cooperative sequential decision making under uncertainty—a decentralized team\, where a fixed finite number of agents act as a team with the common goal of minimizing a long-term cost function. We investigate the general situation where one long-term (objective) cost must be minimized\, while maintaining multiple other long-term (constraint) costs within prescribed limits via a cooperative Multi-Agent Constrained Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (MAC-POMDP) model. Such constrained sequential team decision problems arise in several real-world applications where efficient operation must be balanced with maintaining safe operating margins—such considerations arise in communication networks\, traffic management\, energy-grid optimization\, e-commerce pricing\, environmental monitoring\, etc.\n\nWe focus on the discounted cost criterion\, and start by establishing general results on Lagrangian duality and the existence of a global saddle-point. Next\, we consider decentralized policy-profiles and their mixtures\, and establish that when agents mix jointly over their policy-profiles\, there is no (Lagrangian) duality gap\, and a global saddle point exists under the Slater's condition. However\, when agents mix independently over their policy-profiles\, we show (through a concrete counterexample) that a non-zero duality gap can exist. Then\, we consider coordination policies and their mixtures\, and establish that\, except for pure coordination policies\, they are all equivalent to joint mixtures of decentralized policy-profiles. This equivalence result helps reformulate the original multi-agent constrained optimization problem into a single-agent constrained optimization problem\, which is then used to propose a primal-dual framework for model-based optimal control. Finally\, we extend the notion of a Multi-Agent Approximate Information State (MA-AIS) to constrained decision making\, and formalize MA-AIS based coordination policies and their mixtures. We establish through a concrete counter-example that\, (in contrast to behavioral coordination policies)\, MA-AIS based behavioral coordination policies and their mixtures are not equivalent. We also establish approximate optimality of mixtures of MA-AIS based coordination policies\, and use this result to guide the development of a data-driven alternative for the aforementioned model-based primal-dual framework.\n\nThis is joint work with Nouman Khan\, Amazon Search\, Seattle\, WA\, which was carried out when he was a PhD student at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe nascent field of microrobotics is experiencing a “Cambrian explosion” before our very eyes. Potential applications for these diminutive devices span an array of fields\, including healthcare\, exploration\, environmental monitoring\, search and rescue\, industrial maintenance\, and digital agriculture. However\, the design of microrobotics systems is inherently tied to scaling-law constraints\; as length scales decrease\, surface forces and viscous forces (among others) begin to dominate inertial forces. This leads to fabrication bottlenecks\, struggles with energy/power autonomy\, and the need for specialized and often unconventional actuators. \n\nIn this talk\, I will present three unconventional microactuators developed in my own group. Each leverages distinct physical principles to achieve high forces\, frequencies\, power densities\, and integration potential in microrobotic platforms. These innovations highlight both the limitations imposed by microscale regimes and the opportunities that emerge when we embrace nontraditional transduction mechanisms for locomotion and manipulation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - From Retirement to Reuse: Unlocking the Full Potential of EV Batteries in Stationary Storage
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nMillions of electric vehicle (EV) batteries are projected to retire over the next decade\, often retaining substantial capacity left. Repurposing these batteries offers a promising solution to address challenges in the battery industry\, including raw material scarcity\, supply chain constraints\, and the need for a circular economy. However\, current EV batteries mainly retire after their performance becomes unsatisfactory\, leading to heterogeneous health conditions that diversify lifetime during second use. There is a clear need for guidance on reuse strategies to maximize their whole-lifecycle value\, including reuse in lower-demand applications. Here\, we assess over 101\,000 active retirement-reuse-retirement scenarios for EV batteries across popular stationary energy storage applications. The whole-lifecycle value of EV batteries is quantified using real-world data from EV batteries and their digital twins. For EV batteries retired at different mileages\, we simulated their remaining useful life under realistic second-use applications. The tradeoff between first-life benefits and second-lifetime benefits is analyzed\, and recommendations for selecting second-use applications based on first-life usage conditions are investigated. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of repurposing retired EV batteries and underscore the importance of whole-lifecycle management to enhance circular economy.\n\nBiography:\nZiyou Song is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. He earned his bachelor’s degree with honors and Ph.D. degree with the highest honors in Automotive Engineering from Tsinghua University\, China\, in 2011 and 2016\, respectively. Prior to joining the University of Michigan\, Dr. Song served as an Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore and worked as a battery algorithm engineer at Apple. Dr. Song’s research focuses on modeling\, estimation\, optimization\, and control of energy storage systems\, especially for the electrified transportation and renewable energy sectors. Dr. Song has received several paper awards\, including Automotive Innovation Best Paper Award\, Applied Energy Highly Cited Paper Award\, NSK Outstanding Paper Award of Mechanical Engineering\, and IEEE VPPC Best Student Paper Award. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy 2025-2026 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Connecting planetary properties with formation: a new paradigm emerges\"\n\nAbstract: One of the central challenges facing planet formation theory is in understanding how observed planetary properties – their masses\, orbital characteristics\, bulk properties and atmospheric compositions – are connected to their formation in host protoplanetary disks (PPDs). Forming planets accrete pebbles\, planetesimals\, and gas with a wide range of chemical compositions as they migrate through their evolving PPDs. Essential to these processes is how angular momentum is transported and removed from disks. Recent powerful MHD simulations and a wide range of ALMA and JWST observations confirm that MHD disk winds and not disk turbulence likely play the dominant role. In this talk\, I will review these advances\, their consequences for a new paradigm for planet formation\, and discuss several current projects in my group on the effects of such winds on planetary populations and planetary properties such as their mass-radius relations.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will present an overview of recent developments on the non-uniqueness of weak solutions to the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations—a question that lies at the core of mathematical fluid dynamics. I will highlight the main ideas behind these constructions and discuss their implications for the classical notion of determinism in viscous flows. The second part of the talk will focus on the most recent advances achieved through convex integration\, which has emerged as a powerful framework for constructing non-unique and pathological solutions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Technology of Liberation or Control?: The Asymmetric Effects of the Internet on Political Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Over the past two decades\, the internet and social media have expanded rapidly to all corners of the world. While these new technologies have liberalized access to information and communication channels\, they have also introduced new platforms for surveillance and propaganda. As such\, the internet can be characterized as a ``double-edged sword'' for society\, introducing new freedoms as well as oppressions. This duality is perhaps most evident in the case of Myanmar\, where a majority of the population was first exposed to the internet within the past ten years. In this paper\, we estimate the effects of the internet empirically by exploiting geographic variation in access as well as temporal shocks to exposure. We find that reducing internet access leads to a reduction in the prevalence of demonstrations---but not other forms of political conflict---during the months following a military coup. However\, as internet freedoms are eroded\, the effect on protest activity disappears\, and we argue that this shift can be explained by a change in the nature of political discourse online. Moreover\, in the long run\, we find that internet access is associated with more political violence and higher levels of military control across Myanmar. Taken together\, our results show that the internet can serve as both a tool of liberalization and oppression\, conditional on the government's capacity to monitor and exert influence over the network. These findings are especially relevant for developing economies in which widespread internet access is relatively recent\, as these advances may not necessarily be beneficial for democracy movements.

SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:Dinner & Sneak Peek: Existing Differently Regional Summit
DESCRIPTION:Visionary Organizing is an approach to solving social\, individual\, community\, and organizational problems that equally emphasizes our material needs for survival and our nonmaterial needs for thriving. It solves problems by applying six components to a problem and facilitates change by nurturing interdependence\, transforming relationships\, and creating new systems that can replace what already exists. \n\nCollege students are faced with a serious set of problems. They have to navigate an unpredictable economy\, an ever-evolving relationship with technology\, a changing climate\, and weakening social ties. Solving these problems requires skills that empower them to become leaders who can make their material needs for survival and their nonmaterial needs for well-being equally important. \n\nTo support student leadership development\, Visionary Organizing Lab and Student Life Sustainability at the University of Michigan are partnering to host the Great Lakes Regional Training in Visionary Organizing—a 4.5-day immersive experience in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. This training is open to undergraduate students from midwestern universities who are curious about social change or already engaged in addressing social and community challenges.\n\nOur vision is to support a generation of students who can leave campus and practice Visionary Organizing in communities and organizations with others.\n\n**Dinner will be served**
