SUMMARY:Film Screening:2025 Halaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Xoftex tells the story of a Palestinian-Syrian teenager waiting for asylum in a Greek refugee camp.\nAvailable to stream from Oct 1-15\n\nPre-order the film anytime\, and check out the rest of the month’s Halaloween Horror Film selection!\nhttp://watch.eventive.org/halaloween.\n\n\nWelcome to the 7th annual Halaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival 2025!\n\nWhat is Halaloween? Halaloween screens horror films from across the globe that were made by\, for\, or about Muslims\, to understand: “What scares Muslim audiences? Are horror movies halal?”\n\nThis year’s 2025 film festival runs throughout October on Tuesdays. Halaloween will showcase one film streaming online from October 1-15\; a montage of short films in-person at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn on Tuesday\, October 14 at 7pm\; and two in-person screenings at the State Theatre\, on Tuesday October 21 and 28 at 7pm.\n\nThe festival is free in-person and online–but make sure to reserve tickets! In-person screenings will be first-come\, first-served with RSVPs strongly encouraged.\n\nWe are inclusive of everyone's film needs: from new horror fans who close their eyes through most scary movies\, to those who love the gore–we've got films for everyone! Check the Halaloween Horror Rating in the description of each film for its scariness rating and other details.\n\n\nThe 2025 Halaloween Lineup:\n\nOctober 1-15: Xoftex | Greece/Palestine/Syria | 2024 | Online Screening\nOctober 14: Short Films | Saudi Arabia\, Syria\, Mauritania\, Morocco\, Tunisia | 7:00pm | Arab American National Museum (Dearborn) \nOctober 21: Agora | Tunisia | 2024 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\nOctober 28: Algiers | Algeria | 2024 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\n\nRSVP & stream our online selection: https://watch.eventive.org/halaloween\n\n\nSTREAM ONLINE FROM OCTOBER 1-15\nXOFTEX | 2024 | 99 mins | Directed by Noez Deshe\n\nPalestinian-Syrian teenager Nasser and his older brother Yassin have been living in a Greek refugee camp\, awaiting a decision on their asylum application. They pass the time recording comedy sketches and fantasizing about making zombie films and moving to Sweden. Nasser\, however\, feels increasingly trapped in this No Man’s Land. With nowhere to escape\, boiling tensions in the camp push Nasser to another reality. Highly experimental filmmaking.\n\nDirector Noaz Deshe works as a director and musician. He composed the soundtrack of Babak Jalali’s FRONTIER BLUES (2009)\, and was the cinematographer of the Tiger winner RADIO DREAMS (2016). His debut feature film WHITE SHADOW (2013) about a young albino person won the Lion of the Future Award at Venice Film Festival and was showcased at Sundance Film Festival. XOFTEX (2024) is his second feature film\, selected for FilmFest München. In addition to his artistic work\, he has worked as a volunteer on sea rescue missions and in refugee camps.\n\nHalaloween Horror Rating: 2/5 Pumpkins \n\nRating explanation: Not very scary\, but eerie\, experimental\, and suspenseful. Purposefully experimental to capture the difficulty of being in a refugee camp. Content warnings: drowning death\, monsters\, zombie references\, refugee camps\, hunger\, and fleeing war. Religious content: Islamic prayer.\n\n\n----\n\nHalaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival\, is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center and cosponsored by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, & the Middle Eastern Studies Department. SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Complexity in the Social World: The Challenging Case of Structural Racism
DESCRIPTION:This two-day conference will examine how interdisciplinary collaboration can inform our understanding of structural racism and the way we think about complex topics.\n\nPlease register to attend at https://myumi.ch/2rxWR. Early career scholars may apply for travel awards by Sept. 12\, 2025 at https://myumi.ch/z9je9.\n\n\nThe challenge: With the growth of both big data availability and computing power\, there has been a rapid increase in new methods to understanding complexity in the social world. However\, there may not have been a concurrent growth in the foundations of scientific inquiry\, including complex thinking\, broad causal thinking\, and an integration of theories and frameworks across disciplines to guide empirical tests. Further\, evidence suggests that the academic research model\, with its resource-segregated networks\, narrow scientific\, discipline-specific training\, and focus on measures of short-term productivity\, contributes to a fragmented and even misleading understanding of the social world.\n\nThe rapid growth in racial inequities research through the concept of ‘structural racism’ is a case study in the challenges that arise without a thorough integration of theories drawn from source humanities and humanities-informed social science and with an academic model built on segregated resources that prioritizes short-term products. What has resulted is a literature that\, at times\, sidesteps difficult questions on how to understand the interconnected systems and processes that link racial patterns in social\, economic\, and political life over place and time. \n\nSymposium purpose: This meeting is intended to address the challenges to the social science literature on race and the concept of structural racism. We will convene discussions about social scientific inquiry\, the limitations of the academic research model\, and innovative approaches to the study of racial patterns and inequities while working to desegregate research networks.

DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Centralizing Procurement: The Roles of Scale\, Selection\, and Variety
DESCRIPTION:Centralized procurement intends to increase efficiency by reducing upstream market power through scale effects but may decrease variety and thus fail to accommodate buyers with heterogeneous preferences. Moreover\, buyer voluntary participation may result in adverse selection into intermediation when costs are heterogeneous\, limiting its gains. We study these mechanisms in the context of drug public procurement in Chile. Through a combination of reduced-form analyses and a structural model\, we find sizable scale effects\, substantial preference heterogeneity\, and cost heterogeneity. We use our model to evaluate the impacts of voluntary centralized procurement and the desirability of introducing minimum centralized procurement mandates.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Qing Qu\, Assistant Professor\, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Recent empirical studies have shown that diffusion models possess a unique reproducibility property\, transiting from memorization to generalization as the number of training samples increases. This demonstrates that diffusion models can effectively learn image distributions and generate new samples. Remarkably\, these models achieve this even with a small number of training samples\, despite the challenge of large image dimensions\, effectively circumventing the curse of dimensionality. In this work\, we provide theoretical insights into this phenomenon by leveraging two key empirical observations: (i) the low intrinsic dimensionality of image datasets and (ii) the low-rank property of the denoising autoencoder in trained diffusion models. With these setups\, we rigorously demonstrate that optimizing the training loss of diffusion models is equivalent to solving the canonical subspace clustering problem across the training samples. This insight has practical implications for training and controlling diffusion models. Specifically\, it enables us to precisely characterize the minimal number of samples necessary for accurately learning the low-rank data support\, shedding light on the phase transition from memorization to generalization. Additionally\, we empirically establish a correspondence between the subspaces and the semantic representations of image data\, which enables one-step\, transferrable\, efficient image editing. Moreover\, our results have profound practical implications for training efficiency and model safety\, and they also open up numerous intriguing theoretical questions for future research.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)\nPhase 1 Curatorial Statement\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Amelia Burns (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Erin McKenna (courtyard pillar)\nArtists Amelia Burns and Erin McKenna reimagine the Division Street pillars through digital collages rooted in memory\, landscape and shared environments. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. With a feminist lens\, she explores the space where necessity meets excess\, highlighting the subversive potential of both. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. SUMMARY:Exhibition:By Means of a Pencil
DESCRIPTION:October 9 – November 5\, 2025\nOpening Reception October 9\, 5:00-8:00 pm\nClosing Reception: November 2\, 2:00-5:00 pm\n\nThe U-M Duderstadt Center Gallery presents By Means of a Pencil a solo exhibition by artist and Stamps School of Art & Design LEO Lecturer I Nathan Byrne.\n\nBy Means of a Pencil brings together a body of work centered around the quirky and enigmatic Swiss author Robert Walser. In this exhibition poetic gestures and nods to Walser are able to flourish as visual forms and objects. The work comprises spontaneous and excessively durational works of drawing\, collage\, and sculpture.\n\nFor years\, I have been intrigued by the author Robert Walser’s mark making which he referred to as his “pencil method” where he would sketch out stories in a radically miniaturized script on diminutive paper fragments. Walser’s pencil method began when he was experiencing severe writer’s cramp and: “hideously and frightfully hated his pen.” He goes on in a letter written in 1927 describing the freeing nature of this process: “I suffered a real breakdown in my hand on account of the pen\, a sort of cramp from whose clutches I slowly\, laboriously freed myself by means of the pencil.”\n\nJust as it was with Walser “by means of a pencil” I was able to make peace with drawing by radically altering the process by which I approached the act itself. Eventually\, this became processes like my transcription drawings\, in which I write out an entire novel as a form of mark making.\n\nWhile this exhibition mines the Walser archive and the spirit of this author\, this work is just as much about me and my immersion in this “world of Walser.” It is about my own engagement with relationships between language and mark making\, language and sculpture\, language and longing.\n\nThis project was made possible by the generous support of Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nPoster design by Sky Christoph.\n\nHours: 12 – 6 pm\, Tues. – Fri. & Sun.\n\nLocation: 2281 Bonisteel Blvd\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complexity in the Social World: The Challenging Case of Structural Racism
DESCRIPTION:The challenge: With the growth of both big data availability and computing power\, there has been a rapid increase in new methods to understanding complexity in the social world. However\, there may not have been a concurrent growth in the foundations of scientific inquiry\, including complex thinking\, broad causal thinking\, and an integration of theories and frameworks across disciplines to guide empirical tests. Further\, evidence suggests that the academic research model\, with its resource-segregated networks\, narrow scientific training\, and focus on measures of short-term productivity\, contributes to a fragmented and even misleading understanding of the social world. The rapid growth in racial inequities research through the concept of ‘structural racism’ is a case study in the challenges that arise without a thorough integration of theories drawn from source humanities and humanities-informed social science but with an academic model built on segregated resources that prioritizes short-term products. What has resulted is a literature that\, at times\, sidesteps difficult questions on how to understand the interconnected systems and processes that link racial patterns in social\, economic\, and political life over place and time. Symposium purpose: This meeting is intended to address the challenges to the social science literature on race. We will convene discussions about social scientific inquiry\, the limitations of the academic research model\, and innovative approaches to the study of racial patterns and inequities while working to desegregate research networks. This symposium will take place at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research\, located at 426 Thompson Street\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Walls from Sea to Sky: Kalymnos 2025
DESCRIPTION:Medieval Roman Kalymnos was defined by war and upheaval\, leading to the construction of three impressive fortified settlements in the 7th century A.D. The Medieval Roman Archaeological Survey of Kalymnos’ 2025 field season made significant progress toward full digital recording and mapping of these critical sites. Coupled with an intensive program of ‘catch-and-release’ grab sampling and extensive survey across distant mountaintops and outlying islets\, a full picture of the island’s Early Medieval settlement system is closer than ever before. \n\nThis talk will present several of the season’s findings\, particularly new insights into fortification systems\, domestic architecture\, and the role of the sea.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Score-Augmented Frobenius Distance and Its Applications in Causal Inference
DESCRIPTION:This paper proposes a novel method for causal inference in panel settings with network-valued outcomes by introducing the score augmented Frobenius distance\, a metric that compares networks after sorting their adjacency matrices by node-level structural scores. These scores\, which incorporate both observed covariates and structural features (e.g.\, centrality)\, serve to align nodes across networks under the assumption that structural roles\, rather than identities\, drive treatment effects. This sorting induces an equivalence class over node permutations\, allowing valid comparisons between networks with unobserved heterogeneity. This paper demonstrates how score-augmented Frobenius distance can be applied to extend standard difference-in-differences and synthetic control methods to settings where observations are networks. The framework applies to a variety of empirical settings\, including social networks\, trade networks\, and institutional relationships\, where interventions affect structural properties rather than specific node labels.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Strategic Learning with Asymmetric Rationality
DESCRIPTION:This paper analyzes the dynamic interaction between a fully rational\, privately informed sender and a boundedly rational\, uninformed receiver with memory constraints. The receiver designs an information-processing and decision-making protocol\, modeled as a finite-state machine\, that governs how information is interpreted\, how internal memory states evolve\, and when and what decisions are made. We characterize optimal protocols that balance learning with robustness to strategic manipulation and quantify the extent of both learning and manipulation through payoff bounds for each party. A simple class of protocols disciplines the sender and gives rise to behavioral patterns such as opinion polarization and decision avoidance. The model offers an expressive framework for strategic learning and decision-making under asymmetric rationality\, with applications to regulatory review and media distrust.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Dispersive behaviour of quasilinear hyperbolic waves on periodic backgrounds
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Waves propagating in media with periodic structures have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. These media show interesting macroscopic properties\, which may be quite different from those of the individual materials constituting the stratified system. More recently\, waves on fluids and gases with an underlying periodic structure have been studied. These waves present a peculiar\, somehow unexpected\, behaviour. For example\, there is evidence that in spite of the fact that the waves are governed by a genuinely quasi-linear hyperbolic system\, they do not break into a shock. Here we present several systems in which hyperbolic waves show a dispersive behaviour\, and deduce approximate effective equations which explain the peculiar phenomena. In all cases\, the effective equations are obtained by asymptotic expansion of the solution in a small parameter representing the ratio between the period of the structure and a typical wavelength.\n\nWe start by considering 1D shallow water system with periodic bathymetry. The detailed numerical solutions of the system are compared with the ones satisfied by the effective equations at various orders in the small parameter. Traveling wave solutions of the dispersive models are also computed and compared with the traveling waves emerging from the shallow water system. As a second example we consider 2D shallow water\, with waves propagating in the x-direction\, while the bathymetry is periodic in the y-direction. The last example concerns the Euler equations in gas dynamics. The stationary background is a state with constant pressure\, zero velocity\, and a periodic variation in the density. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Bananapocalypse: Un/Making Plantation Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Department of Anthropology presents its fall 2025 Roy A. Rappaport Lecture Series\, “Bananapocalypse: Un/Making Plantation Capitalism\,” with Assistant Professor Alyssa Paredes:\n\n“Existential crises hang over the producers of the world’s food. Many of these challenges are self-inflicted. In the banana-growing regions of the Southern Philippines\, which produce fruit for export to Japanese markets\, plantations unleash pesticide drift\, food waste\, water effluent\, and fungal pathogens into the surroundings. The plantocratic elite systematically shirks responsibility for these excesses\, using legal contracts\, scientific conventions\, and standards of trade to frame them as “external” to their supply chains. However\, plantation management is regularly proven wrong in its assumption that the things they try to push downstream will not double back to haunt them. Everyday actors on the plantations’ peripheries transform the devices designed to work against them into openings for intervention. Their efforts implore critical scholars of the environment and of global economies to take seriously the possibility that Big Ag’s increasingly frequent failures to reproduce itself are more than just minor inconveniences to business-as-usual. In this series of lectures\, I trace the afterlives of the externalities that commodity production obscures\, disguises\, or otherwise erases from its ambit of accountability. In so doing\, I offer an ethnographic model for turning the commodity studies model\, inherited from generations of anthropologists\, inside-out.”\n\nRappaport lectures will take place on the following fall Fridays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in 411 West Hall. They are free and open to the public. \n\nFriday\, Sept. 12\nElses and Externalities: The Un/Making of Plantation Capitalism \n\nFriday\, Oct. 10\nRejects: Food Cosmetic Standards and the Geopolitics of Waste\n\nFriday\, Nov. 14\nEffluent: Living Downstream of Yourself on the Mindanao River\n\nFriday\, Dec. 5\nForce Majeure: The See-Through Plantation\n\nVIRTUAL PARTICIPATION LINK: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91475190155\n\nIf you need accommodations in order to attend\, please email anthro.exec.secretary@umich.edu.\n\nABOUT ASSISTANT PROFESSOR ALYSSA PAREDES\nAlyssa Paredes is an environmental and economic anthropologist with research interests at the intersection of industrial agriculture\, transnational supply chains\, and social mobilization between the Southern Philippines and Japan. Her book manuscript\, tentatively titled “Bananapocalypse: An Ethnography of the Commodity for the 21st Century\,” is under contract with the University of California Press. Additionally\, her work appears in journals in anthropology\, history\, geography\, food studies\, and Asian studies. She is also co-editor of “Halo-Halo Ecologies: The Emergent Environments Behind Filipino Food” (University of Hawaii Press 2025). She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Yale University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: Twistor spaces of K3 Surfaces
DESCRIPTION:Given a complex K3 surfaces with a fixed Kahler class\, one can construct a family of K3 surfaces over the projective line called the twister space. The theory of twistor spaces is effective for studying the period domain/period map and also leads to the study of hyperholomorphic sheaves\, which have peculiar deformation-theoretic properties. Furthermore\, similar theories of twistor spaces exist in the context of hyperkahler varieties as well as supersingular K3 surfaces in positive characteristics\, which provide further potential applications. In this talk\, we plan to stick to the case of complex K3 surfaces and introduce twistor spaces and their basic properties.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Madison L. Myers
DESCRIPTION:Caldera-forming\, large-volume eruptions (> 450 km³ magma) are among the most impactful volcanic events on Earth\, producing extensive ignimbrites and widespread ashfall hazards. Due to their rarity (reoccurrence interval ~100 ka)\, reconstructing their eruption dynamics requires detailed field mapping coupled with geochemical analysis. Together these tools can be used to identify distinct eruptive phases and reconstruct the magmatic plumbing system. Although still largely thought to be instantaneous events\, fed from a singular magmatic chamber\, field mapping in quaternary systems has highlighted that no single model can be used to understand their behavior. Supereruptions can start mildly over weeks to months before escalating into climactic activity or go into vigorous activity immediately. Field work in Yellowstone has highlighted that individual supereruptions can record activity that required days to weeks or eruptive time or be prolonged over decades. The magmatic sources vary from single bodies of magma to multiple magma bodies that are simultaneously or sequentially tapped. In contrast to these variations\, there are some aspects that are remarkable similar. For instance\, the erupted magmas are often assembled at shallower depths (4–10 km) where mineral diffusion timescales consistently return evidence that only decades to centuries of unrest occur prior to eruption. Examples will be provided from our recent work remapping the Lava Creek Tuff in Yellowstone\, where nothing is as simple as originally presumed.

SUMMARY:Performance:Makaya McCraven
DESCRIPTION:The prolific Chicago-based drummer\, composer\, and producer Makaya McCraven is a cultural synthesizer with a unique gift for blending past\, present\, and future into jazz-rooted 21st-century folk music. “McCraven has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality\,” says The New York Times. “His ability to wrap his albums in the dark allure of a club show\, the timeless texture of an old Folkways record\, and the sonic layering of a hip-hop producer has turned Mr. McCraven into the most discussed young musician on a Chicago jazz scene teeming with fresh energy.”\n\nBorn in Paris to a Hungarian singer and flutist and an African American expat jazz drummer\, McCraven was influenced by an enticing blend of cultures that helped establish his philosophies around jazz as folk music\, as well as the role of music in building and reflecting communities. He headlined New York’s Winter Jazz Festival in January 2025\, performing in four different configurations over the course of a single week. This performance ties in with a new album release following In These Times\, his phenomenally successful 2022 recording.

SUMMARY:Performance:49th Ann Arbor Folk Festival (Friday)
DESCRIPTION:Night one of the Ann Arbor Folk Fest is an evening with Made-in-Michigan favorites Greensky Bluegrass.\n\nKnown for their dazzling live performances and relentless touring schedule\, Kalamazoo’s Greensky Bluegrass -- Anders Beck [dobro]\, Michael Arlen Bont [banjo]\, Dave Bruzza [guitar]\, Mike Devol [upright bass]\, and Paul Hoffman [Mandolin] -- are connected through a deep bond\, just as they are seasoned road warriors\, they’re a band of brothers who have seen each other through decades of ups and downs\, personal and collective highlights\, and the moments when life turns it all upside down. These are real people having real experiences. As with traditional bluegrass\, they write about their own contemporary day-to-day happenings\, emotions\, and experiences in the modern world.\n\nThe band has earned critical acclaim from Billboard\, Parade\, NPR\, and Rolling Stone who hailed them as “representing the genre for a whole new generation.” The band embraces tradition while ushering bluegrass forward on their eighth full-length offering\, Stress Dreams. “Greensky is and always has been very unique in our world\,” observes Paul. “We put our love\, energy\, and focus into what we appreciate about our music. We come together as a band in a way that’s organic. We take a lot of pride in how we grow and challenge each other too. We’re maturing together. I think we get more Greensky all of the time.”\n\nOpening the evening is Junior Brown. With his unique voice\, more unique song writing\, and even more unique double necked “Guit-Steel” guitar\, there has absolutely never been anyone like Junior Brown. He’s a one-man musical hot fusion machine! People call him a cross between Jimi Hendrix and Ernest Tubb. But there’s a lot more to say about Junior Brown. There’s the fact that he’s just about the best surf guitarist around\, for example. Or that he’s a wonderful composer of traditional country songs\, the kind in which each outrageous pun leads you deeper into an emotional blind alley. Seeing Junior live is a definite must\, so GUIT WITH IT ’cause he’s AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL and an absolute legend! Come check out the performer voted #1 House Rocker by the readers of Guitar Player – we are delighted to welcome Junior Brown and his legendary band to open this year’s Ann Arbor Folk Festival.

SUMMARY:Performance:Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore
DESCRIPTION:An electroacoustic soundscape\n\nJulianna Barwich and Mary Lattimore are longtime friends\, tourmates\, and two of contemporary ambient and experimental music's most celebrated composers. Synthesizing their respective crafts within the walls of Philharmonie de Paris after being given access to the extraordinary instrument collection of the Musée de la Musique in partnership with the French label InFiné\, their new single\, “Perpetual Adoration\,” blends historical harps\, celestial synths\, and Barwick’s singular voice into an immersive electroacoustic soundscape of memory\, spirituality\, and timeless resonance. It is the first piece of new music from the duo since “Canyon Lights\,” a single released as part of 2021’s Adult Swim compilation\, Digitalis.\n\nTogether in improvised dialogue\, voice and instrument — Lattimore selecting an Érard double movement harp (France\, 1873) and Barwick behind a Sequential Circuits PROPHET-5 analog synthesizer (USA\, circa 1975) — the duo channels an immense volume of emotion drawn from a visit to Basilica of Sacré Cœur de Montmartre. On a rainy night\, they saw a sign outside the cathedral labeled \"ADORATION PERPÉTUELLE\" and entered the reverberant space where a nun was singing above organ drones during Sunday Mass. They carried the powerful scene with them into a session. The resulting performance honors both the moment and the history within their instruments: the gilded\, ornate Érard harp\, the first modern pedal harp\, remains open for innovation\, still carrying the simplest\, universally beautiful tone of human fingers on strings. The PROPHET-5 has shaped several decades of exploratory music\, and Barwick continues this legacy. Her skyward synth and vocal lines ascend alongside Lattimore's tender harp strums\, creating a meditation on the restorative power of shared experience.

SUMMARY:Performance:Larry McCray
DESCRIPTION:Legendary rustbelt blues shouter and guitar slinger\n\nLarry McCray is a powerhouse bluesman with a soul-soaked voice\, blistering guitar chops\, and a story embodying the spirit of his music. With his new album Heartbreak City\, McCray turns the page on a new chapter—raw\, joyful\, and deeply personal. Produced by blues-rock champions and Grammy Nominated duo Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith\, Heartbreak City finds the legendary singer and guitarist firing on all cylinders\, reconnecting with his roots while stepping boldly forward.\n\nFrom the first notes of the title track\, McCray reminds listeners why he’s long been hailed as one of the most expressive blues artists of his generation. Heartbreak City showcases Larry’s gritty vocals and searing guitar work\, evoking the decades he spent grinding it out in clubs\, pouring heartache and redemption into every solo. Elsewhere\, standout single “Bye Bye Blues” draws on McCray’s teenage years in Michigan\, when soul music still ruled the airwaves. Co-written with longtime collaborator Charlie Walmsley\, it nods to giants like Johnnie Taylor and Bobby Bland while delivering a sound all his own—grooving\, head-nodding\, and utterly timeless.\n\nThe release follows 2022’s Blues Without You\, which marked McCray’s long-awaited return after a seven-year hiatus. The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Blues chart and was named the #1 Blues Album of 2022 by Blues Rock Review\, solidifying his status as a torchbearer of modern blues. In 2024\, McCray was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame\, a testament to his deep roots in the state and his enduring impact on American music. Now\, Heartbreak City builds on that momentum. It’s a record that reflects Larry McCray at his most self-assured -grounded in tradition\, but more fearless than ever.\n\nBorn in 1960 in Smackover\, Arkansas\, McCray grew up steeped in gospel\, soul\, and the electric blues of the three Kings—B.B.\, Albert\, and Freddie. He moved to Saginaw\, Michigan at 12\, where he honed his guitar style by blending classic blues with the psychedelic edge of Hendrix and the southern fire of the Allman Brothers. After years of gigging while working a factory job\, he was signed in the late ’80s as the first artist on Virgin Records’ blues imprint Point Blank. His debut Ambition (1990) was followed by acclaimed albums like Delta Hurricane\, Meet Me at the Lake\, and Born to Play the Blues\, solidifying his role in defining modern blues-rock through the ’90s and early 2000s.\n\nOver the years\, McCray has played alongside a who’s who of music legends —B.B. King\, Buddy Guy\, Albert King\, the Allman Brothers\, Joe Walsh\, Jonny Lang\, Levon Helm\, and of course\, Joe Bonamassa. He was named Orville H. Gibson Male Blues Guitarist of the Year in 2000 and won the Top Guitarist prize in the International Blues Matters writer’s poll in 2014.\n\nBut accolades aside\, it’s the soul in McCray’s music that keeps fans coming back. “I feel totally reborn\,” he says. “This new album lets me show the full scope of what I do —it’s blues\, it’s soul\, it’s real stories. This is who I am.”
