DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute | Cavity QED with molecular defects coupled to a photonic crystal cavity
DESCRIPTION:In-person: Michigan League - Henderson room (3rd Floor)\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/95387296886?jst=2\n\nAbstract:\nWe implement permanent spectral tuning to bring lifetime-limited emitters into collective resonance within an integrated photonic cavity. This addresses a fundamental challenge in solid-state cavity QED: combining multiple coherent quantum emitters with scalable nanophotonics. Our hybrid approach decouples emitter synthesis from nanophotonic fabrication using straightforward techniques that make cavity QED broadly accessible. Building on our previous demonstration of superradiance and subradiance in pairs of molecules [1]\, we now couple several coherent emitters to a single cavity mode through high doping densities. Optically-induced frequency shifting provides long-lived spectral control\, allowing us to tune multiple molecules into resonance and demonstrate controlled formation of collective quantum states [2]. This establishes a scalable platform for many-body cavity QED and opens pathways toward chemically-designed quantum systems where optical properties are engineered through synthetic chemistry. We will also report on progress in our ultracold Li-Cs experiment\, including cooling with the narrow 5D transition [3].\n[1] C. Lange\, E. Daggett\, V. Walther\, L. Huang\, and J.D. Lange et al.\, arXiv:2406.01917 (2025)\n[3]  Blodgett et al.\, arXiv :2505.10540 (2025)\n\nBio:\nJonathan Hood is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Physics at Purdue University. His lab conducts experimental research with ultracold laser-trapped atoms and cryogenic organic molecules. He completed his Ph.D. at Caltech in 2016 with Jeff Kimble\, where he worked on trapping ultracold atoms around nanophotonic structures. He then conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard with Kang-Kuen Ni\, working on laser assembly of ultracold molecules\, before joining Purdue in 2020. He is a recipient of the 2023 NSF CAREER Award.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 27 - November 8\, 2025\nOpening Performances: September 27\, 1-5 p.m.Closing Performances: November 8\, 1-5 p.m.\nStacey L. Kirby’s The Bureau of Personal Belonging is a series of interactive performances set within immersive installations and activated by viewer participation. The work fosters dialogue on identity\, community\, and civil engagement. Through bureaucratic forms\, papers\, postures\, language\, and aesthetics\, audiences are invited to participate in respectful dialogues and playful interactions with the artist. As the 2025 Roman J. Witt Artist-in-Residence\, Kirby spent 12 weeks on campus from January through March of 2025 meeting with students\, faculty\, and staff from the Stamps School and across U-M. Based on these conversations\, Kirby devised a site-specific installation that seeks to amplify the voices of the U-M community\, uphold the value of democratic civic engagement\, and highlight the power of art in building solidarity and mutual respect.\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an innovative exhibition and installation organized by the Stamps School’s SEC (Student Exhibition Committee) and composed of work by Stamps students. The SEC aims to create new and exciting opportunities for undergrads to develop their skills in exhibition-making and installations. \nExhibition Statement\nIn the midst of contemporary chaos there is a quieter\, more isolated struggle to find meaning. As we pursue consistency within our own art making practices\, we must nurture our yearnings for a sustainable community. Fleeting connections can be found in the in-betweens of time and space—cooking with others\, commuting\, etc.\nThe Eye of the Storm is an exhibition demonstrating various forms of individual and collective peacemaking and resistance. This show explores the ways we use creative rituals within the private and public spheres: exploring self identity\, advocating for justice\, fostering care for others and social bonding. DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. DESCRIPTION:Graduate student Adam Lenhart performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:October 9 – November 5\, 2025\nOpening Reception October 9\, 5:00-8:00 pm\nClosing Reception: November 2\, 2:00-5:00 pm\n\nThe U-M Duderstadt Center Gallery presents By Means of a Pencil a solo exhibition by artist and Stamps School of Art & Design LEO Lecturer I Nathan Byrne.\n\nBy Means of a Pencil brings together a body of work centered around the quirky and enigmatic Swiss author Robert Walser. In this exhibition poetic gestures and nods to Walser are able to flourish as visual forms and objects. The work comprises spontaneous and excessively durational works of drawing\, collage\, and sculpture.\n\nFor years\, I have been intrigued by the author Robert Walser’s  mark making which he referred to as his “pencil method” where he would sketch out stories in a radically miniaturized script on diminutive paper fragments. Walser’s pencil method began when he was experiencing severe writer’s cramp and: “hideously and frightfully hated his pen.” He goes on in a letter written in 1927 describing the freeing nature of this process: “I suffered a real breakdown in my hand on account of the pen\, a sort of cramp from whose clutches I slowly\, laboriously freed myself by means of the pencil.”\n\nJust as it was with Walser “by means of a pencil” I was able  to make peace with drawing by radically altering the process by which I approached the act itself. Eventually\, this became processes like my transcription drawings\, in which I write out an entire novel as a form of mark making.\n\nWhile this exhibition mines the Walser archive and the spirit of this author\, this work is just as much about me and my immersion in this “world of Walser.” It is about my own engagement with relationships between language and mark making\, language and sculpture\, language and longing.\n\nThis project was made possible by the generous support of Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nPoster design by Sky Christoph.\n\nHours: 12 – 6 pm\, Tues. – Fri. & Sun.\n\nLocation: 2281 Bonisteel Blvd\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109

DESCRIPTION:Andrea Zemgulys (Chair)\n\n“The African Novel”\nGaurav Desai is Frederick G. L. Huetwell Professor of English and a scholar of African and postcolonial literature. Along with a colleague at Rutgers University he is currently completing work on an edited collection on the Institutions of African Literature to be published by Cambridge University Press. He recently served as President of the African Literature Association and is currently the President of the Association of Departments of English.\n\n“Shrinking the Infinite”\nGabe Habash is the author of the novel Stephen Florida\, a finalist for the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award\, the American Booksellers Association Indies Choice Award for Adult Debut Book of the Year\, and the Clark Fiction Prize. He is the recipient of a fellowship from Bread Loaf and his work has appeared in The Paris Review\, the Los Angeles Times\, Guernica\, The Millions\, Poets & Writers\, Lithub\, and more.\n\n“The Transit of Venus\, Middlemarch\, and the Stupidity of Intertextuality.”\nDaniel Hack is Professor of English at U-M and the author of two books: The Material Interests of the Victorian Novel and Reaping Something New: African American Transformations of Victorian Literature. He has two articles forthcoming later this fall: an appreciation of A Month in the Country\, by J. L. Carr\, for the Public Books website\, and \"Why Always That Dorothea: Realism and the Rise of Meaning.\" That article will appear in the journal Novel: A Forum on Fiction\, in a special issue he co-edited on \"Belief in Fiction.\n\nModern Refugee Codices: Rethinking Authorship\, Medium\, and Format\nWill Stroebel teaches Modern Greek and Comparative Literature. DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe tumor microenvironment (TME) is a densely populated ecosystem where cells live side by side\, shaping each other’s behavior much like species in habitats. Modern imaging technologies now allow us to map the exact location and type of cells across heterogeneous populations of patients\, providing unprecedented resolution into this hidden ecology. Yet many analytic pipelines reduce this complexity to simple counts of each cell type\, analyze one marker or cell at a time\, or incorporate spatial information via ad-hoc or simplistic rules\, failing to fully capture the overall spatial organization of the TME.\n\nStatistical ecology offers a principled alternative. Rather than treating each component (cell type\, interaction\, or patient image) in isolation\, population-level statistical ecology models study the joint spatial arrangement of all cells at once for the entire patient cohort. These models capture statistically significant patterns of co-location\, avoidance\, interaction\, or spatial clustering that arise from complex intercellular dynamics and differentiate across patients based on covariates. These transparent\, probabilistic models interpretably summarize how spatial structure changes across patients\, quantify uncertainty\, and enable rigorous comparisons across different tumor subtypes or treatment groups. In this way\, they move beyond black-box pattern detection to uncover generalizable biological signals\, distinguishing disease-driven remodeling of tissue architecture from random individual variability.\n\nWe introduce bipps (Bayesian Inference of Point Patterns in Space)\, our first step toward a comprehensive statistical ecology pipeline for TME analysis. bipps is an open source R package that implements and generalizes advanced statistical ecology models for multivariate spatial data. \n\nAbout the DCMB Tools & Technology Seminar Series\n\nThe DCMB Tools and Technology Seminar Series is held in Palmer Commons\, Room 2036\, each Thursday at 12pm EST. DESCRIPTION:A reception with light refreshments will be held in the B10 lobby before each seminar from 1-1:30 p.m.\n\nXinyue Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at Michigan State University. She received her Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2021\, and her bachelor’s degree from Sichuan University in 2015. Her research group currently focuses on hydrogel materials and devices as the new paradigm to control mass transport and light transmission for biomedical and environmental applications. She was awarded Forbes Asia 30 Under 30\, MRS Graduate Student Award\, and Emerging Investigator in\nJMCB.\n\nDesigning soft materials is often a balancing act: when we make a material tougher\, we usually sacrifice other properties that are equally important. For example\, tough materials tend to scatter light and lose transparency\, or resist breakdown and become environmentally persistent. These trade-offs are not just academic curiosities\, but they limit progress in healthcare and sustainability technologies. In this talk\, I will share our efforts to rethink this challenge by building a toolbox that links molecular design\, network topology\, and multiscale structures in polymers. Using this approach\, we have\ndeveloped materials that are simultaneously tough and transparent for optical applications\, as well as materials that are tough yet still programmable to degrade on demand. Beyond these case studies\, I will show how this materials-by-design strategy opens a pathway to multifunctional soft matter systems that can adapt to biological environments\, assist in sustainable manufacturing\, and enable next-generation medical and environmental\ntechnologies.

Drawing on his joint work with Jean Pauphilet (London Business School)\, Dr. Cory-Wright will present a novel relax-then-sample strategy that achieves provably near-optimal solutions for orthogonally constrained quadratic optimization problems. He will discuss how this framework extends to broader low-rank settings through new\, tighter semidefinite relaxations that significantly improve scalability and performance. DESCRIPTION:The clock is ticking – why it’s time to engineer biorhythms in vitro\nAbstract:\nThe mechanistic study of pathophysiology and therapeutic action has long relied upon the use of engineered in vitro cell culture systems. These systems\, however\, lack the periodic fluctuations\, or biorhythms\, in the cellular microenvironment that effectively integrate “time” into these culture platforms by providing physiological inputs necessary for cellular synchronization and circadian rhythms. Given the central role that circadian rhythms play in health and disease\, this absence is puzzling. For example\, cardiovascular disease\, diabetes\, osteoarthritis\, and asthma\, are just a few diseases with known circadian rhythm effects. Moreover\, more than half of the top 100 selling drugs target the product of a circadian gene\, and multiple clinical trials have retrospectively shown the impact of time-of-day dosing on improved outcomes and increased patient lifespan. The underlying reason conventional systems largely do not integrate temporal dynamics in vitro is because they either require the use of poorly scalable external flow control systems or manual fluid exchanges. In this talk\, I will discuss my group’s research focusing on the development of microfluidic technologies to address the challenges of embedding time within scalable in vitro systems using microfluidic circuits. Additionally\, I will describe microfluidic systems we have developed for the scalable production of microgels for use in packed bed reactors that allow us to perform rhythmic fluidic exchanges in 3D tissue cultures.

DESCRIPTION:\"JWST Views of Cluster Brightest Cluster Galaxy Nebulae: Dusty Molecular Hydrogen\"\n\nI will discuss preliminary analyses of a sample of 7 brightest cluster galaxies observed with the JWST Mid Infrared Imager and IFU Spectrograph. BCGs often host bright optical emission line filaments. These filaments are strongly associated with the presence of xray emitting intracluster gas with a short cooling time and with active AGN feedback. The filaments are multiphase\, multi temperature\; the spectra allow the measurement of speeds and velocity widths to a few kpc/sec at scales of 0.2”. I will discuss some surprising features and next steps in the work.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Understanding the fitness effects of mutations and implications for small populations
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary - Many mutations that occur in genomes are deleterious\, resulting in a decrease in reproductive fitness. While such mutations are important for evolution and complex traits\, much remains to be discovered. In this talk\, I will discuss our work on estimating fitness effects of deleterious mutations using genetic variation data from natural populations. First\, I will describe our computational approach\, FitDadi\, to estimate the distribution of fitness effects (DFE) for amino acid changing mutations in humans and other species. Analysis of how the DFE differs across species provides insights about how the DFE itself evolves. I also will describe our work inferring the DFE of mutations in noncoding regions of the human genome. Next\, I provide a strategy to validate population genetic models of selection and dominance by testing whether they predict observed levels of inbreeding load and match observed genetic data. Lastly\, I will discuss how insights gained from studying deleterious mutations may help identify small populations at risk of inbreeding depression.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY SEMINAR: Non-negative curvature on vector bundles over homotopy spheres.
DESCRIPTION:The seminal theorem of Cheeger and Gromoll characterizes open manifolds of non-negative sectional curvature by showing that any such manifold\, $M^n$\, is diffeomorphic to the normal bundle of a totally convex\, closed submanifold $\Sigma^k$\, a \textit{soul} of $M$.  This brings up a far-reaching open problem: given a closed manifold $\Sigma^k$ with non-negative sectional curvature\, which vector bundles over $\Sigma$ admit complete metrics with non-negative curvature?  In this talk we will talk about the history of this problem and answer a longstanding question of Grove-Ziller.  We show that every vector bundle over every homotopy 7-sphere admits non-negative curvature.  This is joint work with David Duncan and Rebecca Field.

DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Greg Keoliean\n\nAbstract:\nThe field of industrial ecology has long sought to understand the flows of resources and waste through our human-made systems and technologies\, often with some intention of anticipating and avoiding unintended consequences. This perspective is particularly relevant to decarbonization strategies\, where we have great urgency to change the technologies and operations of our energy and transport systems to meet climate targets\, but which require a life cycle perspective to understand their true capacity to reduce emissions and to understand their other environmental\, social or governance issues. In this talk I will discuss the use of life cycle assessment and material flow analysis for improving the transition to a decarbonized future with particular focus on electric vehicles and their batteries as a key\, but not complete\, solution for decarbonization of the transport sector.\n\nBiography:\nProf. Alissa Kendall holds a degree in Environmental Engineering from Duke University (B.S.E. 2000)\, and a PhD jointly conferred in Environmental Engineering and Natural Resource Policy from University of Michigan Ann Arbor (2007) for work conducted at the Center for Sustainable Systems. Prior to pursuing her graduate education\, she worked as an automotive product development engineer focusing on hybrid and electric vehicles. She joined UC Davis as an assistant professor in 2007 and is now the Ray B. Krone Endowed Professor of Environmental Engineering in the UC Davis Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and is the Director of the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies. During her time at UC Davis\, she co-founded and chaired the Energy Graduate Group\, an interdisciplinary Energy Systems degree program\, and created the graduate certificate in Industrial Ecology.\nAs an industrial ecology scholar\, her research focuses on understanding and reducing the environmental effects of many the key systems our modern world relies on including transport\, civil infrastructure\, and agriculture. She has authored and co-authored nearly 100 peer-reviewed journal articles\, and her research has been honored with several awards including the Laudis Medal from the International Society of Industrial Ecology\, UC Davis Chancellor’s Fellow award\, and the UC Davis College of Engineering’s Mid-Career Research Award (2023).

DESCRIPTION:Does immigration challenge the identities and cultural diversity of receiving societies? This paper investigates this question by analyzing the impact of immigration on cultural diversity in Europe between 2004 and 2018. It combines regional cultural diversity indices derived from the European Social Survey with immigration shares from the European Labor Force Survey. The findings indicate that immigration increases the salience of birthplace along cultural lines and fosters a shift toward nativist identities and nationalism among the population. In response to the perceived challenge of cultural diversity\, natives increasingly align their norms and values with those of the broader native-identified population.

DESCRIPTION:Plasmonic nanoparticles have a unique ability to convert light to other forms of energy\, enabling applications as broad as biosensing\, nanomedicine\, (photo)electrocatalysis\, photothermal heating\, and more.  While colloidal syntheses are increasingly sophisticated\, even the best nanoparticle samples have inherent heterogeneity in the size and shape of the resulting structures\, leading to the need for single particle imaging strategies in order to tease out structure-function relationships. Typically\, however\, most correlated structure-function measurements are performed serially\, in which function is measured first\, followed by structure determination. This talk will introduce calcite-assisted localization and kinetics (CLocK) microscopy as a parallel\, rather than serial\, strategy for performing correlated structure-function measurements on single nanoparticles\, highlighting different strategies for obtaining structural information from all-optical images.

McMaster for the 7th annual Arthur Vandenberg Lecture. \n\nMcMaster will give his overview of of the many conflicts around the world\, the role the U.S. is playing and can play in the future\, and the prospects for peace\, followed by a conversation with professor of practice Javed Ali of the Weiser Diplomacy Center.\n\nFrom the speaker's bio:\nH. R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution\, Stanford University.  He is also the Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and lecturer at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.  Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1984\, McMaster served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army for thirty-four years.  He retired as a Lieutenant General in June 2018 after serving as the 25th assistant to the president for National Security Affairs. He holds a PhD in military history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  McMaster is the host of Battlegrounds: Vital Perspectives on Today’s Challenges and is a regular on GoodFellows\, both produced by the Hoover Institution. He is a Distinguished University Fellow at Arizona State University. \n\nAbout the Vandenberg Lecture:\nThe Meijer Family established the Vandenberg Fund in 2017 to honor U.S. Senator Arthur Vandenberg\, who served the State of Michigan in the U.S. Senate from 1928-1951. Senator Vandenberg forged bipartisan support for our country's most significant and enduring foreign policies of the twentieth century\, including the Truman Doctrine\, the Marshall Plan\, NATO and the creation of the United Nations. Her work blends trauma-informed facilitation\, systems thinking\, and somatic grounding with creative tools like the “Reminder Stone” ritual\, used from Detroit classrooms to UN convenings. Rebecca was part of the coalition awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize (ICAN) and has collaborated with partners across government\, education\, and civil society worldwide. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Hipparchus’s Ancient Star Catalogs
DESCRIPTION:A couple of years ago the news of the discovery of Hipparchus’s lost star catalog in an ancient manuscript (the so-called Codex Climaci Rescriptus) broke out\, appearing in newspapers\, magazines\, and important scientific journals around the world. What is the importance of this discovery? Which stars did this catalog include? And what was its purpose?\n\nIn this talk Professor Francesca Schironi will discuss this fragment together with her own study of the other fragments connected with Hipparchus’s star catalog (i.e.\, the Latin fragments in the so-called Aratus Latinus\, and in a Greek papyrus\, P.Aberd. 12). She will put these fragments in their historical and scientific context\, analyzing other\, different star catalogues and star lists of antiquity\, especially those from ancient Mesopotamia and Greece.\n\nFrancesca Schironi is a professor in the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan. She earned her PhD at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa\, Italy. Before joining U-M in 2010\, she was an associate professor at Harvard University. She is currently working on a translation and commentary of Hipparchus's Exegesis of the Phenomena of Euoxus and Aratus\, as well as a monograph on Hipparchus.

DESCRIPTION:2025 marks the hundredth anniversary of the birth of legendary conductor\, composer\, horn player\, and pedagogue\, Gunther Schuller. The maestro made his mark in many corners of the Classical music world\, and was one of the pioneers of bringing the history and influence of jazz into orchestral concert halls.
