DESCRIPTION:On October 24-25\, 2025\, join us for Balikan*: Shared Stewardship and Ethical Returns for Philippine Collections\, a two-day symposium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. This symposium brings together scholars\, archivists\, cultural heritage workers\, and community activists from across the globe who are collaborating and advocating to better represent and activate Philippine collections in libraries\, archives\, and museums.\n\nThe central question that will be explored throughout the two-day symposium is: What are the current and future directions of shared stewardship of Philippine colonial collections? DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

As the 2025 Roman J. Witt Artist-in-Residence\, Kirby spent 12 weeks on campus from January through March of 2025 meeting with students\, faculty\, and staff from the Stamps School and across U-M. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an innovative exhibition and installation organized by the Stamps School’s SEC (Student Exhibition Committee) and composed of work by Stamps students. The SEC aims to create new and exciting opportunities for undergrads to develop their skills in exhibition-making and installations. \nExhibition Statement\nIn the midst of contemporary chaos there is a quieter\, more isolated struggle to find meaning. As we pursue consistency within our own art making practices\, we must nurture our yearnings for a sustainable community. Fleeting connections can be found in the in-betweens of time and space—cooking with others\, commuting\, etc.\nThe Eye of the Storm is an exhibition demonstrating various forms of individual and collective peacemaking and resistance. This show explores the ways we use creative rituals within the private and public spheres: exploring self identity\, advocating for justice\, fostering care for others and social bonding. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. SUMMARY:Performance:Framing Ménerbes: A Film by Daniel Gwirtzman (U-M Alum)
DESCRIPTION:*Framing Ménerbes* frames a stunning village in Provence\, its natural beauty of far-reaching vistas\, mountains\, vineyards\, and the light for which it is known\, taken in through the prism of choreographer\, filmmaker\, and dancer Daniel Gwirtzman (BFA ’92\, dance)\, celebrating thirty years as a New York City artist in 2025. The film combines the vicarious excitement of a travelogue with a documentary-like portrait of an artist’s creative process\, immersing the viewer into the picturesque landscapes\, charming architecture\, and beauty of dance. Daniel shot each frame of the film\, capturing the dancer who has been with him the longest\, himself! A dozen participants from the region joined as performers in this film which illuminates the inspiration to produce art. DESCRIPTION:One of the most celebrated artists in American history\, the brilliant and always innovative Herbie Hancock returns to Hill Auditorium in a limited tour that promises to bring his signature mix of freewheeling\, thought-provoking\, and mind-expanding jazz and funk. A true icon of modern music\, Hancock has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice\, and there are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B.\n\nBorn in Chicago in 1940\, Hancock was a piano prodigy who performed a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 11\, years before he began playing jazz. After Detroit trumpeter Donald Byrd recognized his talents as a 20-year-old\, he signed with Blue Note Records as a solo artist\; his 1963 album produced the hit “Watermelon Man\,” which marked him as an instant success story. A history-shaping tenure with the Miles Davis Quintet followed\, and he would later herald the birth of jazz fusion. In short\, he has been an integral part of every popular musical movement in the 50+ years since\, leaving an indelible imprint wherever he lands. This performance marks Hancock’s fourth UMS concert appearance since 2000 and his first since April 2015.

DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Department of Dance presents *Vulture*\, an MFA thesis performance directed by Scott Crandall. Performances will take place at 7:30 pm on October 24th and 25th. Tickets are free and will be available at the door beginning 30 minutes before show time\, as well as online at https://mutotix.umich.edu.\n\nWhen a world ends\, does it leave behind a corpse?\n\n*Vulture* is an experimental\, partially improvised dance work that falls apart and reforms. Dancers work their way through a detailed score to rupture through frames of performance\, togetherness\, and expectation. The expansive design teeters between the surreal and the practical\, and the scenes onstage cycle between impersonal care\, disorientation\, and compulsion.\n\nChoreographer: Scott Crandall\nCast: Amelie Vidrio\, Kaitlyn Wilson\, Mia Brooks\, Kate Tsuruharatani\, Ladina Schaller\, and Anna Bodescu\nLighting Design: Jess Fialko\nSet Design: Jenna Kirk\nCostume Design: Maddy Rager\n\nSCOTT CRANDALL (they/he) is a member of Thank You So Much For Coming\, a Detroit-based performance duo that creates hilarious and thoughtful performances about horrible beloved crumbling America with collaborator Maddy Rager. Scott also is a member of Play House Laboratories\, a nonprofit organization that manages Play House\, a studio\, rehearsal space\, and small-scale performance venue bringing high-quality\, experimental\, and family-friendly programming to Banglatown\, Detroit residents at little-to-no cost.

DESCRIPTION:“Spotless harmonies” –Dallas Morning News\n\nJackopierce formed in 1988 in Dallas as theater students at SMU. They released ten studio albums\, toured three continents\, nine countries\, and 45 states. After a five-year breakup\, the guys reunited in 2002 to test out the waters. They were very warm\, and Jack & Cary got back out there to play for grateful fans that thought they would never see them again. The two now have a totally renewed creative vigor\, mutual respect and deep gratitude for their fans.
