SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brothers and Uncles\, Kings and Typecutters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Performance:Tiffany Ng and Anna Jian\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng and Anna Jian perform on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Searching for Tau Neutrinos in the Peruvian Andes with TAMBO
DESCRIPTION:The detection of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos by IceCube has opened a new window on our Universe. While IceCube has measured the flux of these neutrinos at energies up to several PeV\, much remains to be discovered regarding their origin and nature. Currently\, the discovery of point sources of neutrinos is hindered by atmospheric neutrino backgrounds\; likewise\, astrophysical neutrino flavor ratio measurements are limited by the difficulty of discriminating between electron and tau neutrinos. \n\nTAMBO is a next-generation neutrino telescope specifically designed to detect tau neutrinos in the 1-100 PeV energy range. This tau neutrino specificity enables the low-background identification of astrophysical neutrino sources\, as well as tests of the flavor ratio of astrophysical neutrinos. TAMBO will comprise an array of water Cherenkov and plastic scintillator detectors deployed on the face of the Colca Canyon in the Peruvian Andes\, with its unique geometry facilitating the high-purity measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos. In this talk\, I will present the prospects of TAMBO in the context of next-generation neutrino observatories and provide an overview of its current status.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships: TeKisha Rice Wallace
DESCRIPTION:TeKisha Rice Wallace of Virginia Tech joins the RCGD Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships to present:\n\nRacism-Related Stress and Black American's Romantic Relationships\n\nCompared to White Americans\, Black Americans have poorer relationship outcomes including being among the least likely to marry\, having poorer quality relationships\, and being the least likely to stay married. These racial inequities in relationship outcomes have been attributed\, in part\, to racism which “defines\, structures\, reinforces\, and constrains romantic relationships” (Landor & McNeil Smith\, 2023\, p. 7). The Integrative Model for the Study of Stress in Black Families (Murry et al.\, 2018) frames racism and the inequities that it produces as stressors for Black family relationships. Importantly\, romantic relationships can be a source of strength and resilience for Black Americans as they navigate shared experiences of racism-related stress\, including persistent discrepancies in access to resources that undergird racial inequities\, together. Black families’ existence and historical persistence in the face of racism suggests that individuals have consciously and unconsciously adapted behaviors and cognitions that can mitigate the adverse effects of racism. Importantly\, racism and racism-related stress is multidimensional its effects can be complicated by other intersecting oppressions (e.g.\, cis-sexism\, heterosexism\, classism).\n\nIn this talk\, Dr. TeKisha Rice Wallace will present published and ongoing work form her research on associations between racism-related stress\, individual wellbeing\, and relationship functioning among partnered Black Americans. In addition\, the talk will discuss how a macro-contextual stressor such as racism-related stress can be experienced as a relational stressor. The talk will conclude by reviewing the implications\, limitations\, and future directions for this field of research.\n\nDr. TeKisha Rice Wallace (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Science at Virginia Tech where she directs the Relationship Experiences: Strengths and Strains (REST) Lab. Using quantitative and qualitative methods\, her research examines the complex associations between social stressors\, individual wellbeing\, and relationship dynamics. Her research is driven by the belief that all people deserve to live long lives full of joy and authentic relationships that minimize the challenges of navigating inevitably hard times. Dr. Rice Wallace’s research has been recognized by the International Association for Relationship Research.\n\nAbout the series:\n\nHumans are social animals and from the earliest days of life\, are dependent on the quality of social relationships with significant others: family\, kin\, friends\, and a growing social network of online acquaintances. But\, how do we conduct research and come to understand the social processes transpiring in these significant social connections with others? What are the consequences for individual development and mental health outcomes of having close intimate relationships in one’s life? There is also a darker side to some relationships in the form of violence\, aggression\, and conflict. How do we study these processes? Social media and artificial intelligence have opened up new ways of thinking about “what is a social relationship?” and how many of these “friends” can one truly have.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on different types of social relationships\, spanning family and parent-child relationships\, friendships\, peer networks\, romantic relationships\, attachment relationships\, and the use of online media to maintain social connections. Although several speakers are senior scholars with extensive research backgrounds in the field\, many are junior scholars who are traversing new paths into the science of social relationships. Please join us Mondays to learn more about the exciting field of social relationships!\n\nThese events are held Mondays from 3:30 to 5.\nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrganized by Brenda Volling and Richard Gonzalez.\nAs permissions allow\, seminars are later posted to our YouTube playlist.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Fe-mediated N2-fixation and lessons for other metals: Bridging catalysis\, electrocatalysis\, and photocatalysis
DESCRIPTION:Nitrogen reduction to ammonia is a requisite transformation for life and there is growing interest in developing sustainable technologies for ammonia synthesis using renewably sourced energy. Such approaches may some day lead to distributed on-demand fertilizer production and enable ammonia to be used as a zero-carbon alternative fuel. Our group has had an ongoing interest in fundamental studies of well-defined synthetic catalysts that mediate nitrogen reduction (N2R) to ammonia (or hydrazine). We are especially interested in the operative mechanisms by which these catalysts operate. Most recently\, we have been pursuing the idea that proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) pathways for N2R can be more thermally efficient than step-wise ET/PT pathways and have tested this hypothesis via the development of electrochemical PCET (ePCET) mediators driven at potentials sufficiently anodic that the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is mitigated. We have also designed related electrocatalytic strategies that exploit an ET instead of a PCET mediator. Relatedly\, we are studying catalytic systems that mediate photodriven and (photo)electrochemical N2R. Here\, visible light rather than temperature\, pressure\, or electrochemical potential\, provides the primary driving force needed for catalytic ammonia generation. Again\, we are especially interested in the intimate mechanisms by which these various systems operate.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: A local sign decomposition for symplectic self-dual Galois representations of rank two
DESCRIPTION:We present a new structure on the first Galois cohomology of families of symplectic self-dual p-adic representations of $G_Qp$ of rank two. This is a functorial decomposition into free rank one Lagrangian submodules encoding Bloch-Kato subgroups and epsilon factors\, mirroring an underlying symplectic structure.\n\nThis local sign decomposition has local as well as global applications\, including compatibility of the Mazur-Rubin arithmetic local constants and epsilon factors\, and new cases of the parity conjecture. It also leads to a formulation and proof of an analogue of Rubin's conjecture over ramified quadratic extensions of Qp\, which initiates an integral Iwasawa theory for CM elliptic curves at primes of additive reduction. (Joint with S. Kobayashi\, K. Nakamura\, and K. Ota.)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Local cohomology modules supported at determinantal nullcones
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We will discuss the local cohomology modules supported at the nullcone ideal for the classical actions of the linear algebraic groups. We calculate the arithmetic rank of the nullcone ideals in every characteristic and establish sharp vanishing results for local cohomology modules supported at these ideals over any commutative Notherian ring which mirror the corresponding results for determinantal ideals. This is joint work with Jack Jeffries\, Anurag Singh\, and Uli Walther.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Relational Technologies and Indigenous STEM (Science\, Trickers\, Ecology\, and Matriarchs)
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores how Anishinaabe (Neshnabe) philosophies of futurity offer alternative frameworks for science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics—reimagined here as Science\, Trickers\, Ecology\, and Matriarchs (STEM). Drawing from my book\, Mapping Neshnabe Futurity\, I examine how Indigenous knowledge systems—rooted in land-based ethics\, intergenerational responsibility\, and reciprocal relationships—function as sophisticated technologies for sustaining ecosystems and communities. Central to this approach are both women-led political movements and trickster methodologies. Figures like Nanabozho embody creativity\, misdirection\, and transformation\, showing how experimentation\, surprise\, and humor can drive innovation. Trickster thinking unsettles linear notions of progress\, inviting scientific practices that are adaptive\, relational\, and open to unexpected outcomes.\n\nRather than treating “technology” as merely mechanical or digital\, I highlight how Indigenous worldviews understand technology as relational: practices for maintaining balance between human and more-than-human worlds. Examples include sustainable water stewardship\, climate adaptation\, and culturally grounded mapping projects that foreground Anishinaabe languages and histories. By bringing Indigenous studies into conversation with STEM fields\, this talk argues for futures where scientific inquiry is inseparable from ethics of care and responsibility. Through Indigenous futurisms and trickster methodologies\, we can envision and build worlds that are innovative\, just\, and ecologically thriving.\n\nBlaire Morseau is a citizen of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians and Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Michigan State University where she is also affiliate faculty in Digital Humanities and American Indian and Indigenous Studies. Before becoming a professor\, she worked as her tribe's first full-time archivist\, launching an online collections and dictionary website called Wiwkwébthëgen (We-oh-kweb-jug-gin) using Potawatomi cultural protocols of access and traditional knowledge labels. \n\nAs Co-Director of The Indigenous Chicago Project\, Blaire also helped shape the project's components which include oral histories\, digital maps\, curricular materials and more\, that explore the histories of the region\, centering Indigenous voices\, laying bare stories of settler-colonial harm\, and gesturing toward Indigenous futures. She recently released an edited volume featuring the collection of antique birch bark books written by nineteenth century Potawatomi author\, Simon Pokagon\, titled\, As Sacred to Us: Simon Pokagon’s Birch Bark Stories in their Contexts\, published by Michigan State University Press.\n\nDr. Morseau consults on various exhibitions and collaborative programming for archives\, libraries\, and museums around the country including the Field Museum of Natural History\, The Newberry Library\, and The Indiana University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Her research interests are in Indigenous science fiction and futurisms\, traditional cultural and ecological knowledge\, digital heritage\, and Native counter-mapping. Her newest book project published in May 2025 with the University of Arizona Press\, is titled Mapping Neshnabé Futurity: Celestial Currents of Sovereignty in Potawatomi Skies\, Lands\, and Waters. The monograph investigates how Native peoples in the Great Lakes region leverage their traditional knowledge in environmental activism and in creative works of speculative fiction to reclaim Indigenous space and tribal sovereignty.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Combinatorics Seminar: McMullen's g-conjecture
DESCRIPTION:A simplicial polytope P is the convex hull of finitely many points in R^d such that all the faces of P are simplices. To each such polytope\, we can associate its f-vector\, which is the integer vector recording the number of faces of each dimension. McMullen conjectured that the f-vectors of simplicial polytopes are completely characterized by three strikingly simple conditions. The sufficiency of these conditions was proved by Billera and Lee\, and the necessity was proved by Stanley using Hodge theory.\nIn this talk\, we will review the construction of toric varieties from polytopes and intersection cohomology. We will then give a brief account of Stanley's proof of the necessity part of the g-conjecture.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Impact of Privatization: Evidence from the Hospital Sector
DESCRIPTION:Government ownership in the U.S. hospital sector\, which accounts for 5.3% of U.S. GDP\, has steadily declined for decades. A key driver has been the privatization of hospitals owned by local governments. Theory predicts that privatization will improve hospital profitability\, but may be socially inefficient. We test these predictions empirically by leveraging all 254 privatizations that occurred between 2001 and 2018. Privatization increases hospital profitability\, eliminating the need for subsidies. However\, we also find a reduction in access for Medicaid patients and an increase in mortality among elderly Medicare patients. On average\, privatization generates $0.6 million in savings per additional death.

SUMMARY:Performance:Fruit Bats (Solo)
DESCRIPTION:New solo music from Eric D. Johnson\n\nBaby Man\, the new album by Fruit Bats\, is like nothing else in Grammy-nominated songwriter Eric D. Johnson’s catalog. Little in the arc of his career—including Fruit Bats’ evolution from home recording project to rollicking roadshow\, his solo output\, and his work with Bonny Light Horseman—points the way to this album\, in which his only accompaniment\, aside from the occasional blush of synthesizer\, is a guitar\, banjo\, or piano. Save for producer Thom Monahan\, reuniting with Johnson for the first time since Fruit Bats’ 2019 breakthrough Gold Past Life\, it’s just Johnson in the room\, meaning that when the turntable’s needle meets Baby Man’s groove\, it’s just him and the listener\, mutually in for a reckoning.
