SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brothers and Uncles\, Kings and Typecutters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Julia Campbell Dissertation Defense
DESCRIPTION:Earth System Models (ESMs) are advanced numerical tools that enable researchers to evaluate responses in the Earth’s system to deliberate changes in climate forcings and boundary conditions\, like greenhouse gas concentration\, orbit\, and continental configuration. Through simulations of past warm climates\, we can measure shifts in temperature\, the hydrological cycle\, or the carbon cycle that may offer insights into modern warming trajectories and model biases. This dissertation examines changes in atmospheric and marine processes in response to warming across novel simulations of past climates with environmental proxy data to further understand the Earth system under elevated CO2 levels.\n\nIn Chapter 2\, we investigate the orbital sensitivity of Earth’s hydrological cycle under different CO2 background states within an Early Eocene setting by conducting water isotope-enabled Community Earth System Model (CESM) simulations at 3x and 6x pre-industrial (PI) CO2 levels. This chapter suggests that seasonal hydrological responses to orbital changes are greater than CO2-driven changes in several regions – with these orbital differences more pronounced in lower CO2 climates – and\, therefore\, the orbit in place during proxy archive formation can provide critical context for interpreting oxygen isotopic signals.\n\nIn Chapter 3\, we explore equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) across CESM slab ocean model (SOM) simulations of four distinct past climate intervals: the late Cretaceous (~90 Ma)\, the early Eocene (~55 Ma)\, the late Oligocene (~25 Ma)\, and PI. We analyze the contributions of model boundary conditions\, like CO2 state\, geography\, and ocean heat transport (OHT)\, to ECS differences and decompose the total climate feedback parameter in order to provide new constraints on ECS sensitivity and variability through Earth’s history. \n\nIn Chapter 4\, we simulate the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO) at pre-MCO 280 ppm CO2 and MCO 560 ppm CO2 levels using CESM coupled with the Marine Biogeochemistry Library (MARBL) to study phytoplankton community structure and marine primary productivity shifts during this recent warm period. We find that an elevated CO2 level leads to surface warming\, sea ice melt\, weakened overturning\, inhibited upwelling\, and changes in nutrient distribution. These consequences result in poleward migration and increased productivity by small phytoplankton and decreased productivity by larger diatoms.\n\nTogether\, the results of this dissertation demonstrate the value of advanced ESM simulations\, particularly when analyzed alongside empirical data\, in determining potential hydrological\, radiative\, or biogeochemical alterations in response to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations throughout Earth’s history.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Do Himalayan birds wear puffy down jackets?
DESCRIPTION:To keep warm\, Himalayan birds may use their plumage for insulation\, fluctuate with metabolic rate to produce body heat\, or escape the cold by migrating downslope. Sahas will discuss how Himalayan bird feather macro-structure is associated with the elevation across 250 species. He will then explore whether there is intra-specific variation within species across their elevational distribution and how it relates with their ecology. Finally\, Sahas will delve down (pun intended) into the brightness and heat absorption capacity of feathers as a means of keeping warm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Eye of the Storm
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an innovative exhibition and installation organized by the Stamps School’s SEC (Student Exhibition Committee) and composed of work by Stamps students. The SEC aims to create new and exciting opportunities for undergrads to develop their skills in exhibition-making and installations. \nExhibition Statement\nIn the midst of contemporary chaos there is a quieter\, more isolated struggle to find meaning. As we pursue consistency within our own art making practices\, we must nurture our yearnings for a sustainable community. Fleeting connections can be found in the in-betweens of time and space—cooking with others\, commuting\, etc.\nThe Eye of the Storm is an exhibition demonstrating various forms of individual and collective peacemaking and resistance. This show explores the ways we use creative rituals within the private and public spheres: exploring self identity\, advocating for justice\, fostering care for others and social bonding. The selected artworks reflect each artist's way of staying in motion and/or finding calm amidst complicated or difficult times. \nThis exhibition is organized and juried by SEC student curators Hana Ichikawa\, BFA '26 (lead)\; Urvi Joshi\, BA '26\; Elsie Rogers\, BFA '27\; Jacqueline Vinson\, BFA '27\; and Maggie Watson\, BFA '26. \nThe Eye of the Storm will be on display in the Stamps Gallery atrium from October 17 - November 1\, 2025\, and features work by the following Stamps students:\nSage Booth\, BFA '28Rachel DeVeyra\, BFA '26McKenna Finn\, BA '26Reese Ford\, BFA '26Abigail Garcia\, BFA '27Erin Malone\, BFA '27Summer Mansi\, BFA '27Margaret (Mags) McKinney\, BFA '28Ava Muntner\, BFA '27Mia Noel\, BFA '28Eliana Pettigrew\, BFA '26Oliver Lee St Cyr\, BFA '26Jesse Strohauer\, BFA '28

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)\nPhase 1 Curatorial Statement\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Amelia Burns (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Erin McKenna (courtyard pillar)\nArtists Amelia Burns and Erin McKenna reimagine the Division Street pillars through digital collages rooted in memory\, landscape and shared environments. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Website / Instagram\nErin McKenna Erin McKenna is an interdisciplinary artist with a background in sculpture. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. With a feminist lens\, she explores the space where necessity meets excess\, highlighting the subversive potential of both. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. Her process follows personal rules:\nno hierarchy of materialssubvert expected usecomplicate binaries\, stereotypes and associationsmisuse\, misapplyallow for variable arrangementsrepeat\, reiterate\, reuseconsider the subversive possibilities of the excessive\, fantastic\, and necessaryalways let the labor be visible\nMcKenna earned her BFA from Columbus College of Art &amp\; Design in 2012 and later completed her MFA at Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan. She recently moved back to the forest she calls home in Southeastern Ohio\, where she serves as Exhibitions Director at The Dairy Barn Arts Center\, hunts for mushrooms with her toddler\, and makes quilts. SUMMARY:Exhibition:By Means of a Pencil
DESCRIPTION:October 9 – November 5\, 2025\nOpening Reception October 9\, 5:00-8:00 pm\nClosing Reception: November 2\, 2:00-5:00 pm\n\nThe U-M Duderstadt Center Gallery presents By Means of a Pencil a solo exhibition by artist and Stamps School of Art & Design LEO Lecturer I Nathan Byrne.\n\nBy Means of a Pencil brings together a body of work centered around the quirky and enigmatic Swiss author Robert Walser. In this exhibition poetic gestures and nods to Walser are able to flourish as visual forms and objects. The work comprises spontaneous and excessively durational works of drawing\, collage\, and sculpture.\n\nFor years\, I have been intrigued by the author Robert Walser’s mark making which he referred to as his “pencil method” where he would sketch out stories in a radically miniaturized script on diminutive paper fragments. Walser’s pencil method began when he was experiencing severe writer’s cramp and: “hideously and frightfully hated his pen.” He goes on in a letter written in 1927 describing the freeing nature of this process: “I suffered a real breakdown in my hand on account of the pen\, a sort of cramp from whose clutches I slowly\, laboriously freed myself by means of the pencil.”\n\nJust as it was with Walser “by means of a pencil” I was able to make peace with drawing by radically altering the process by which I approached the act itself. Eventually\, this became processes like my transcription drawings\, in which I write out an entire novel as a form of mark making.\n\nWhile this exhibition mines the Walser archive and the spirit of this author\, this work is just as much about me and my immersion in this “world of Walser.” It is about my own engagement with relationships between language and mark making\, language and sculpture\, language and longing.\n\nThis project was made possible by the generous support of Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nPoster design by Sky Christoph.\n\nHours: 12 – 6 pm\, Tues. – Fri. & Sun.\n\nLocation: 2281 Bonisteel Blvd\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lessons from the Water Warrior on Community Coalition Building for Water Justice
DESCRIPTION:Lessons from the Water Warrior on Community Coalition Building for Water Justice\nMonica Lewis-Patrick\, Founder and CEO of We The People of Detroit\nFriday\, October 31\, noon ET\nSSW ECC 1840\n\nAs a community-based grassroots organization\, WPD aims to inform\, educate\, and empower Detroit residents on imperative issues surrounding civil rights\, land\, water\, education\, and the democratic process. In collaboration with community activists\, academics\, researchers\, and designers\, the WPD Community Research Collective (CRC) utilizes research in order to serve the sustainability of the Detroit community. The WPD CRC uses data to visually show the socio-economic consequences of austerity policies in Detroit\, which have worked toward the dismantling of Black and Brown Detroit neighborhoods. By presenting a critical counter narrative\, WPD CRC uses knowledge as a tool to empower Detroit citizens as they fight for an equitable and beloved community. WPD CRC's most recent project addresses the public health crisis in Detroit as a result of unsafe and inaccessible water services.\n\nThe Real-World Perspectives on Poverty Solutions speaker series introduces key issues regarding the causes and consequences of poverty through an in-person and virtual lecture series featuring experts in policy and practice from across the nation. Our goal is to help build a broad community of learners to engage in these issues together.\n\nThis series is free and open to the public as well as being a one-credit course for U-M students (SWK 503\, Course #25751). In-person talks include coffee\, cookies\, and the chance to ask the speakers questions or watch the livestream on YouTube.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Revisiting the Indian Hills Site: A Protohistoric Village Community of Western Ciinkwhtanwi Kihcikami (Lake Erie)
DESCRIPTION:The Indian Hills site (33-WO-4)\, in Rossford\, Ohio\, is a large (10-acre)\, multicomponent site situated at a high promontory along a creek one mile southeast of Taawaawa Siipiiwi (the Maumee River). This site was discovered in 1962\, and professional excavations took place in the late 1960s and the early 1980s. A comprehensive review of excavations and artifact analyses exist primarily in two Master’s theses. Here\, I will review excavation data\, ceramics data\, and radiocarbon dates\, presenting new analyses on abandoned petrographic data collected decades ago. This site\, on city property\, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979\; it is in the process of becoming a “green space\,” an urban forest with walking trails. Possible paths forward for collaborative research and local community awareness and engagement will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Student Dissertation Defense - Global change impacts on plant and carbon dynamics in montane meadows
DESCRIPTION:Dissertation abstract: Plant biomass\, a key carbon pool\, is being affected by global changes\, including shifts in plant community composition and changes in abiotic conditions. High-elevation\, montane places\, in particular\, are being strongly impacted by warming temperatures\, changing snowmelt\, and species invasion. Though these global change processes are happening simultaneously\, we know little about how they will interact to impact carbon cycling across different temporal scales. My dissertation addresses this research gap with three interrelated field experiments in montane meadows of Colorado and New Zealand. First\, I worked in a long-term warming and dominant species removal experiment set at two elevations to measure how warming and dominant species removal impact subdominant plant biomass and the rate of biomass change across a growing season. Warming decreased subdominant plant biomass\, and dominant species removal increased subdominant plant biomass at both elevations\, consistently across the growing season. Biomass differences manifested in the first week of the growing season and persisted throughout the growing season\, with no treatment effects on the growth rate of the plants\, suggesting that early-season biomass conditions are important in determining overall plant biomass. Next\, I investigated how warming interacted with an invasive dominant species to impact carbon cycling across the growing season in a montane grassland in New Zealand. Removal of the invasive dominant species reduced the productivity of the system\, reducing the strength of the carbon sink. Though warming did not impact the productivity of the invaded plots\, warming increased the productivity of the native plant community\, suggesting that the native plant community could play an important role in maintaining productivity in future\, warmer climate scenarios. Finally\, I investigated how a shift in the early-season abiotic conditions\, earlier snowmelt\, might impact carbon cycling across the growing season in a montane meadow in Colorado. Earlier snowmelt increased the strength of the carbon sink\, though unequally throughout the growing season. With earlier snowmelt\, the growing season started earlier and increased carbon uptake through peak season. However\, the late season had a weaker carbon sink\, likely due to the earlier soil drying. Taken together\, my dissertation reveals the many ways global change is likely to impact carbon cycling across temporal scales in highly sensitive montane environments.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Hiring to Displace: How Employers Use Legal Status to Reshape Workplace Power
DESCRIPTION:Legal status is not just context\, and its relevance is not confined to ethnic niches. It functions as a managerial instrument of workplace governance within large and complex organizations. I develop the concept of orchestrated racialized displacement to specify how organizations transform legal status vulnerability into managerial control under a race-neutral compliance veneer. Based on a multiyear ethnography of Southern manufacturing\, nearly 300 interviews\, and archival research\, I trace four interlocking levers: (1) staffing agency partnerships\, (2) selective verification\, (3) performance metrics that reward speed and compliance\, and (4) job redesign. Together\, these practices are deployed to recruit and retain Latino immigrant workers without federal work authorization and establish a credible threat regime that reallocates tasks\, shifts\, and promotions\; discipline U.S.-born workers\; and narrow mobility ladders\, with disproportionate effects on Black workers. By linking shopfloor routines to organizational partnerships and local labor markets\, the analysis clarifies why standard accounts (network effects\, “race-neutral” HR\, or shifts in demand) are incomplete. The framework identifies the organizational levers\, rather than just the outcomes\, through which firms remake internal labor markets. It also formalizes a meso-level account connecting managerial practice to durable segmentation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Multiscale Modeling\, Simulation\, and Analysis of Microstructure Evolution in Polycrystalline Materials
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Many technologically useful materials are polycrystals composed of small monocrystalline grains that are separated by grain boundaries of crystallites with different lattice orientations. The changes in the grain and grain boundary structure of polycrystals highly influence the material’s properties\, including\, but not limited to\, electrical\, mechanical\, optical\, and thermal. Thus\, one of the central problems in materials science is to design technologies capable of delivering an arrangement of grains that produces a desired set of material properties.\n\nA method by which the grain structure can be engineered in polycrystalline materials is through grain growth (coarsening) of a starting structure. The evolution of the grain/grain boundary structure and associated grain growth is a very complex\, multiscale\, and multiphysics process. It involves\, for example\, the dynamics of grain boundaries\, triple junctions in 2D (triple curves/lines and quadruple points in 3D)\, and the dynamics of lattice misorientations. Therefore\, grain growth can be regarded as the anisotropic evolution of a large cellular network and can be described by a set of deterministic local evolution laws for the growth of individual grains combined with stochastic models for the interaction between them. In this talk\, we will present recent perspectives on mathematical modeling\, numerical simulation\, and mathematical analysis of the evolution of the grain boundary network in polycrystalline microstructures. Relevant recent experiments\, along with current and future research\, will be discussed as well.\n\nPart of this talk is based on the recent collaboration/work with Katayun Barmak\, Batuhan Bayir\, William M Feldman\, David Kinderlehrer\, Chang (Kamala) Liu\, Chun Liu\, Masashi Mizuno\, Thuong Nguyen\, Matthew Patrick\, and Jeffrey Rickman\, and is partially supported by the DMREF program under DMS-2118172 Award and the Simons Foundation Fellowship Award SFI-MPS-SFM-00010667.\n\nContact: Selim Esedoglu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Determinants of tree distance matrices and submatrices (Combinatorics seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Suppose D is the distance matrix of a tree. Graham and Pollack showed that the determinant of D satisfies an identity that depends only on surprisingly little information of the given tree. I will explain how this identity generalizes to a combinatorial expression for the determinant of any principal submatrix of D. This new identity involves counts of spanning forests and is proved by use of potential-theoretic concepts on graphs. This generalizes further to a determinant identity for effective resistance matrices on an arbitrary finite graph. I will mention a connection to the ultra-log-concave version of Mason's conjecture\, and a strengthening for the graphic case.\n\nThis is joint work with Farbod Shokrieh and Chenxi Wu. https://arxiv.org/abs/2411.11488

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Emily Troyer
DESCRIPTION:The fossil record offers unique insights into evolutionary patterns that cannot be inferred from living species alone. Fossils provide a critical temporal element to macroevolutionary studies\, allowing us to strengthen phylogenetic inferences\, document morphological change through time\, and directly calibrate divergence events. My past research lies at the intersection of phylogeny\, phenotype\, and time\, relying extensively on fossil specimens to detect patterns of morphological change over deep time. In one study\, using tetraodontiform fishes (pufferfishes and relatives) as a model system\, I combined phylogenomic data\, paleoclimatic records\, and body size measurements from living and fossil species to test long-standing macroevolutionary hypotheses of body size evolution. These analyses revealed that increasing body size correlates with cooling ocean temperatures through time\, providing strong support for both Bergmann’s and Cope’s rules in marine fishes. In another study\, I used 3D morphological data from exceptionally preserved fossil jaws of early bony fishes (423–359 Ma) to uncover an adaptive radiation that was driven primarily by lungfishes and coelacanths\, standing in contrast to their “living fossil” descendants of today. Together\, these studies highlight how fossils capture often unseen evolutionary dynamics and underscore the importance of paleontological data for understanding evolutionary diversification.

SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:Student Art Meetup: Rocky Horror Picture Show
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in going to an event on Halloween but you don't want to go alone? Are you someone who enjoys smaller groups to get to know people? Then our Art Meetup Events are the way to go! Join us on Halloween night for a shadow cast performance of Rocky Horror Picture Show put on by RC Players! Students will be performing the show in front of the screen while dancing and acting along with the iconic 1975 film. Dressing up in Rocky Horror-themed attire or wearing a Halloween costume is not required\, but definitely encouraged! \n\nWe will meet outside the Keene Theater in East Quad at 6 pm\, as there will likely be a line outside the theater before the show. Information on how to find the theater can be found here: https://lsa.umich.edu/rc/reserve-a-room-/the-keene-theater.html\n\nSpace is limited and registration is required to join the Art Meetup.\n\nContent advisory: Rocky Horror Picture Show is rated R. It includes nudity\, sex\, sexual coercion\, and violence. While a very important part of queer film history\, it also includes outdated language regarding trans identities\, which some may find triggering. This event involves audience participation and will be loud and interactive – earplugs will be provided to Meetup attendees!\n\nArt Meetups are student-led excursions to explore the arts on campus and in Ann Arbor - all while giving you a chance to meet your peers who share similar interests! From local artist markets to performances to hands on artmaking\, Art Meetups have something for all interests.

SUMMARY:Performance:Brain Plasticity Ukelele Collective & Blueshouse
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor’s Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective is a proudly intergenerational group\, sharing instruments\, knowledge\, kindness\, and talent across eras. Instruments you might hear in the music of the collective include not only ukuleles but also guitar\, flute\, percussion\, harmonica\, accordion\, mandolin\, mandola\, bass\, piano\, and melodica. The group is inspired by the idea that music cuts across diverse cognitive capabilities and resources\, including numeracy\, language\, and space perception.\n\nMike Brooks\, veteran blues guitar player/singer/songwriter from the UK has been playing guitar since the age of 10\, and professionally since the age of 16. His musical career and accolades are many and varied\, but include hitting the UK charts in 1979 (#28 on “the New Wave of British Heavy Metal” despite being a blues band)\, getting a cease and desist order from Walt Disney Corp for using a band name too close to that of a cartoon mouse\, opening for bands such as the Yardbirds\, the Animals\, Wishbone Ash and Nine Below Zero\, and playing in some of the most famous venues anywhere such as London’s Marquee\, and\, well\, The Ark! In addition to leading BLUESHOUSE and fronting the Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective\, he also works with Ann Arbor’s youth at the Neutral Zone\, a continuation of a youth music project begun in the UK called Electric896\, which taught disengaged youth how to rock the blues.\n\nCancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor is a local nonprofit affiliate of The International Cancer Support Community (CSC)\, opening our doors in 2007. The Cancer Support Community is the largest and most comprehensive program in the country devoted solely to providing emotional support and education to people with cancer\, their caregivers and children – all free of charge.
