SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brothers and Uncles\, Kings and Typecutters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stacey L. Kirby: The Bureau of Personal Belonging (Ann Arbor Edition)
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 27 - November 8\, 2025\nOpening Performances: September 27\, 1-5 p.m.Closing Performances: November 8\, 1-5 p.m.\nStacey L. Kirby’s The Bureau of Personal Belonging is a series of interactive performances set within immersive installations and activated by viewer participation. The work fosters dialogue on identity\, community\, and civil engagement. Through bureaucratic forms\, papers\, postures\, language\, and aesthetics\, audiences are invited to participate in respectful dialogues and playful interactions with the artist. As the 2025 Roman J. Witt Artist-in-Residence\, Kirby spent 12 weeks on campus from January through March of 2025 meeting with students\, faculty\, and staff from the Stamps School and across U-M. Based on these conversations\, Kirby devised a site-specific installation that seeks to amplify the voices of the U-M community\, uphold the value of democratic civic engagement\, and highlight the power of art in building solidarity and mutual respect.\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Eye of the Storm
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an innovative exhibition and installation organized by the Stamps School’s SEC (Student Exhibition Committee) and composed of work by Stamps students. The SEC aims to create new and exciting opportunities for undergrads to develop their skills in exhibition-making and installations. \nExhibition Statement\nIn the midst of contemporary chaos there is a quieter\, more isolated struggle to find meaning. As we pursue consistency within our own art making practices\, we must nurture our yearnings for a sustainable community. Fleeting connections can be found in the in-betweens of time and space—cooking with others\, commuting\, etc.\nThe Eye of the Storm is an exhibition demonstrating various forms of individual and collective peacemaking and resistance. This show explores the ways we use creative rituals within the private and public spheres: exploring self identity\, advocating for justice\, fostering care for others and social bonding. The selected artworks reflect each artist's way of staying in motion and/or finding calm amidst complicated or difficult times. \nThis exhibition is organized and juried by SEC student curators Hana Ichikawa\, BFA '26 (lead)\; Urvi Joshi\, BA '26\; Elsie Rogers\, BFA '27\; Jacqueline Vinson\, BFA '27\; and Maggie Watson\, BFA '26. \nThe Eye of the Storm will be on display in the Stamps Gallery atrium from October 17 - November 1\, 2025\, and features work by the following Stamps students:\nSage Booth\, BFA '28Rachel DeVeyra\, BFA '26McKenna Finn\, BA '26Reese Ford\, BFA '26Abigail Garcia\, BFA '27Erin Malone\, BFA '27Summer Mansi\, BFA '27Margaret (Mags) McKinney\, BFA '28Ava Muntner\, BFA '27Mia Noel\, BFA '28Eliana Pettigrew\, BFA '26Oliver Lee St Cyr\, BFA '26Jesse Strohauer\, BFA '28

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)\nPhase 1 Curatorial Statement\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Amelia Burns (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Erin McKenna (courtyard pillar)\nArtists Amelia Burns and Erin McKenna reimagine the Division Street pillars through digital collages rooted in memory\, landscape and shared environments. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Website / Instagram\nErin McKenna Erin McKenna is an interdisciplinary artist with a background in sculpture. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. With a feminist lens\, she explores the space where necessity meets excess\, highlighting the subversive potential of both. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. Her process follows personal rules:\nno hierarchy of materialssubvert expected usecomplicate binaries\, stereotypes and associationsmisuse\, misapplyallow for variable arrangementsrepeat\, reiterate\, reuseconsider the subversive possibilities of the excessive\, fantastic\, and necessaryalways let the labor be visible\nMcKenna earned her BFA from Columbus College of Art &amp\; Design in 2012 and later completed her MFA at Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan. She recently moved back to the forest she calls home in Southeastern Ohio\, where she serves as Exhibitions Director at The Dairy Barn Arts Center\, hunts for mushrooms with her toddler\, and makes quilts. SUMMARY:Performance:Telegraph Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Telegraph Quartet\, String Quartet in Residence\nwith SMTD faculty Malcolm Tulip\, narrator and Amy I-Lin Cheng\, piano \nand guest young artists Anna Sykes\, viola and Katarina Elise\, cello\n\nJoin the Telegraph Quartet for the first of two concerts celebrating the music of the Second Viennese School and those they influenced with their daring experimentation during the first half of the 20th century. With the support of the Chamber Music Guest Artist Mentor Residency\, Schönberg scholar and violist\, Henk Guittart\, has worked extensively with the Telegraph Quartet and our guest artists to present the works on this program.\n\nWe'll explore two monumental works by the founder of that school\, Arnold Schönberg\, that span the full breadth of his musical journey – first with an early work form 1899\, his late-romantic and deeply expressive *Verklärte Nacht* or \"Transfigured Night\,\" a tone poem for string sextet inspired by the poem of the same name by Richard Dehmel. On the other side of his career\, the *Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte* of 1942 is a dramatic chamber music recitation\, setting Lord Byron's eponymous poem lambasting Napoleon's tyranny and defeat\, but intended by Schönberg to be a defiant statement against at the despotism and horror of Hitler's tyranny. Starting the program will be the dazzling and colorful String Quartet No. 3 by Jamaican-British composer Eleanor Alberga\, who in this specific work\, experimented with the 12-tone method invented by Arnold Schönberg\, melding that musical vocabulary into her own deeply individual aesthetic and adding yet another unique voice at the end of the century to a style that would become utterly pervasive during the 20th century.\n\nPROGRAM\nEleanor Alberga - String Quartet No. 3\nArnold Schönberg - *Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte* for String Quartet\, Piano and Reciter\n-intermission-\nArnold Schönberg - *Verklärte Nacht* for String Sextet\n\nThe award-winning Telegraph String Quartet – featuring Eric Chin and Joseph Maile (violins)\, Pei-Ling Lin (viola)\, and Jeremiah Shaw (cello) – is engaged in a three-year artist residency at the U-M School of Music\, Theatre & Dance.\n\nABOUT THE ENSEMBLE:\n\nhttps://www.telegraphquartet.com

SUMMARY:Performance:THE LONG FALL
DESCRIPTION:*You are falling\, but you never land.*\n\nTHE LONG FALL imagines a world suspended in contradiction – a space of constant motion where characters shift form\, time loops without resolution\, and realities collide. Inspired by the existential absurdity of being alive\, the failures of assigned roles\, and the blurred boundaries between play and performance\, the work explores the combustible territory between childhood imagination\, adult consequence\, and theatrical illusion.\n\nWhat does it mean when children play at war\, or love\, or death – enacting dramas they barely understand? And what happens when those same dramas become real\, lived\, or staged? Is the stage any less real than the battlefield\, the bedroom\, or the family dinner table? THE LONG FALL lives in this surreal overlap\, where innocence and impact are tangled\, where performance is both survival and surrender.\n\nSet against an original electronic score by Marshall Chadbourne\, the myth of the American mission – of family\, of purpose\, of safety – fractures. No promise can truly be kept. No victory comes without shadow. And still\, we try. We fail. We try again. Our lives tumble forward in the chaotic current of time\, and even as we fall through space\, we brazenly and optimistically reach for one another. These exquisite moments of connection\, caught between descent and delay\, are the flashes of meaning against all odds.\n\nMy process begins with the body. Behavior that rises into high physicality becomes a portal into the surreal\, emotional\, and mythic. The pressure between bodies becomes a kind of truth-teller. The audience is present – not just as observers\, but as witnesses\, co-dreamers\, and sometimes accomplices.\n\nCreation is collaborative\, volatile\, and alive. I bring movement\, text\, images\, themes\, and tasks\; the ensemble brings their interpretations – wild\, grounded\, broken\, ecstatic. We construct a world from fragments and contradictions. A world that drifts between war-torn realities and absurd dream-states. Where the nuclear family is both icon and ruin. Where love is earnest and unspeakable. Where we fail beautifully\, collapsing forward\, haunted and held.\n\nTHE LONG FALL does not seek to tell a linear story\, but to inhabit a state – a falling\, looping\, breaking\, trying. It is a meditation on fragile persistence\, on the way human beings continue inside impossible conditions. How even when the promise has been broken\, the mission has failed\, the family has splintered\, we keep playing. Over and over\, bending time into childlike loops: Are we there yet?\n\nCAST & COLLABORATORS\nConcept and Direction: Shannon Gillen\nChoreography: Jason Cianciulli and Shannon Gillen\, in collaboration with the performers\nChoreographic Assistant: Katherine Kiessling\nPerformance: Jason Cianciulli\, Tzveta Kassabova\, Katherine Kiessling\, and Samy Navarez\nGuest Performance: Ruby Clay\, Audrey De Guia\, Emerson Forbes\, Leah Kropp\, Rachel McNaughton\, Ava Menzel\, Melisa Orduna\, Olga Rabetskaya\, Jessica Serres\, Caitlyn Wade\, Angelica White\nSound Score: Marshall Chadbourne with voice over by Sasha Lipinski\nLighting Design: Jess Fialko\nSet Design: Jungah Han\nOriginal Text: Shannon Gillen with excerpts from Beckett's 'Happy Days'\nBackstage Operations Manager: Tiff Crutchfield

SUMMARY:Performance:Both Sides Now: The Music and Lives of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen
DESCRIPTION:“Two singer-songwriters sit on the edge of a cliff…”\n\nWith these words\, we are drawn into the world of Both Sides Now - a theatrical concert that explores the music and lives of long-time friends and one-time lovers\, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Created by\, and starring Robbie Schaefer and Danielle Wertz\, the cabaret-style performance traverses decades alongside songs such as A Case of You\, Hallelujah\, Big Yellow Taxi\, Suzanne\, and many more. Both Sides Now is at once a piece of the 60’s and 70’s\, and of right now -- offering us a story about the messiness of being human\, of lives persistently lived at the edge of growth\, and of finding the courage to turn toward one another\, again and again.\n\nRobbie Schaefer:\nRobbie is a rabbi\, singer-songwriter and theatre/film artist. The guitarist and songwriter for the indie folk band Eddie From Ohio has several solo releases as well\, including the 2023 single Under the Sun.\n\nHe is currently at work on a new musical\, The Blue Poppy\, an Irish-Jewish ghost story written in collaboration with Scottish playwright Grace Barnes\, and Songs From The Wilderness\, a new album of Jewish musical midrash (interpretation)\, due for release in early 2026. \n\nDanielle Wertz:\nDanielle is a storyteller\, collaborator\, jazz musician\, composer and arranger. After being named a 2015 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition semi-finalist\, Danielle independently released her debut album\, Intertwined\, which ranked #4 on Capital Bop's list of \"Best DC Jazz Albums of 2017.\" That same year she placed 2nd in the Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition and 3rd in the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Vocal Competition.\n\nIn 2023 Danielle released her sophomore album\, Other Side. With this project she made a quantum leap as a composer and conceptualist. The album pairs her original compositions with carefully crafted arrangements of standards from the Great American Songbook. Jazziz called the album “expressive and polished” and Jazz Weekly noticed a “Joni Mitchell’d tenderness to her material.”
