Over a century, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more, they developed methods, such as page-layout and indices, to make their books easy to read, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\r\n\r\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. In this exhibition poetic gestures and nods to Walser are able to flourish as visual forms and objects. The work comprises spontaneous and excessively durational works of drawing, collage, and sculpture.\r\n\r\nFor years, I have been intrigued by the author Robert Walser\u2019s mark making which he referred to as his \u201cpencil method\u201d where he would sketch out stories in a radically miniaturized script on diminutive paper fragments. Walser\u2019s pencil method began when he was experiencing severe writer\u2019s cramp and: \u201chideously and frightfully hated his pen.\u201d He goes on in a letter written in 1927 describing the freeing nature of this process: \u201cI suffered a real breakdown in my hand on account of the pen, a sort of cramp from whose clutches I slowly, laboriously freed myself by means of the pencil.\u201d\r\n\r\nJust as it was with Walser \u201cby means of a pencil\u201d I was able to make peace with drawing by radically altering the process by which I approached the act itself. As second horn of the BSO, she occupies the John P. II and Nancy S. Eustis chair. Prior to the BSO, Childers was the acting assistant principal\/utility horn of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. She also held several positions in orchestras throughout California. Childers was in the first class of horn players admitted to the Colburn School, in Los Angeles, where she studied with David Jolley and David Krehbiel. She received her bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees at SMTD, where she studied with S\u00f6ren Hermansson. During her time at U-M she enjoyed performing with both the University Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Band, where she began her college career as horn 4B under director H. Robert Reynolds.\n\nChilders is devoted to education initiatives and is particularly proud of the implementation of the \u201cBSO in Residence\u201d project in her adopted community of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Childers also develops and performs programs for the BSO\u2019s \u201cConcerts for Very Young People\u201d at local libraries and children\u2019s museums.\n\nChilders is currently on faculty at the Longy School of Music at Bard College and the New England Conservatory of Music, where she is also chair of winds, brass, and percussion chamber music. During the summers, she teaches at Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Tanglewood Music Center, and Boston University Tanglewood Institute.
