However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world.   Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate.  This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brothers and Uncles\, Kings and Typecutters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: a. Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.b. Students who are not able to write in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) do not need to take the placement test and they will be advised to enroll in Arabic 101.\nWhere can I view my results?a. Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.b. You will not be notified of your score automatically. c. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * Students who took or are currently enrolled in an Arabic course are not eligible to take the Arabic placement test. They should register for the next course level.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.  * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the campus’ history and architecture and explore the campus that might have been. This exhibit highlights the U-M Ann Arbor campus\, both before its creation and throughout its continuous evolution. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exhibit featuring the photography of Joseph Ferraro\, free and open to the public at Matthaei Botanical Gardens.\n\n \n\nBIO\n\nJoseph is a conservation photographer living and working in southeast Michigan. In 2014\, using macro photography to explore his backyard garden\, he unknowingly began walking a naturalist’s path and documenting native pollinators and invertebrates. His large format prints of local invertebrates are currently on exhibit outside of the Belle Isle Nature Center\, with other works on exhibit inside the Center. DESCRIPTION:This paper develops a novel methodology to measure the redistributive effects of monetary policy. In addition to pure measurement\, our methodology provides an assessment of whether and how much the redistributive effects of monetary policy matter for the aggregate effects of monetary policy. We apply our methodology to measure the redistribution between different groups in the U.S. economy\, based on labor and asset income\, age\, gender and race. We find that the redistribution across such demographic groups induced by monetary policy is large in the data.

DESCRIPTION:October 9 – November 5\, 2025\nOpening Reception October 9\, 5:00-8:00 pm\nClosing Reception: November 2\, 2:00-5:00 pm\n\nThe U-M Duderstadt Center Gallery presents By Means of a Pencil a solo exhibition by artist and Stamps School of Art & Design LEO Lecturer I Nathan Byrne.\n\nBy Means of a Pencil brings together a body of work centered around the quirky and enigmatic Swiss author Robert Walser. In this exhibition poetic gestures and nods to Walser are able to flourish as visual forms and objects. The work comprises spontaneous and excessively durational works of drawing\, collage\, and sculpture.\n\nFor years\, I have been intrigued by the author Robert Walser’s  mark making which he referred to as his “pencil method” where he would sketch out stories in a radically miniaturized script on diminutive paper fragments. Walser’s pencil method began when he was experiencing severe writer’s cramp and: “hideously and frightfully hated his pen.” He goes on in a letter written in 1927 describing the freeing nature of this process: “I suffered a real breakdown in my hand on account of the pen\, a sort of cramp from whose clutches I slowly\, laboriously freed myself by means of the pencil.”\n\nJust as it was with Walser “by means of a pencil” I was able  to make peace with drawing by radically altering the process by which I approached the act itself. Eventually\, this became processes like my transcription drawings\, in which I write out an entire novel as a form of mark making.\n\nWhile this exhibition mines the Walser archive and the spirit of this author\, this work is just as much about me and my immersion in this “world of Walser.” It is about my own engagement with relationships between language and mark making\, language and sculpture\, language and longing.\n\nThis project was made possible by the generous support of Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nPoster design by Sky Christoph.\n\nHours: 12 – 6 pm\, Tues. – Fri. & Sun.\n\nLocation: 2281 Bonisteel Blvd\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - A holistic framework to assess plants\, pollinators\, and plant-pollinator interactions given novel herbicide exposure
DESCRIPTION:Description: Worldwide pollinator declines are a growing concern amid the scientific community and the public at large. While modern agricultural practices have been identified as a major factor contributing to the pollinator crisis\, most of the research on this topic has focused on the effects of insecticide use on pollinators. In contrast\, far less effort has been invested in trying to understand the possible downstream effects of herbicide use on pollinators via their effects on the plants upon which pollinators rely for floral resources. This oversight is especially alarming because herbicides surpass insecticides as the most highly-used class of pesticide in the world\, and instances of pollution from newly-adopted herbicides\, namely synthetic auxin (“auxinic”) herbicides\, are rising. Moreover\, my PhD work has shown that low dose exposures to auxinic herbicides can disrupt the growth and flowering of plant species commonly found in agroecosystems and the root mutualism between legumes and nitrogen-fixing rhizobial bacteria. Yet\, the effects on plant-pollinator mutualisms in field-realistic scenarios are just beginning to be understood. In this seminar\, I will present the main findings from my dissertation as well as preliminary results from my ongoing postdoctoral project\, which aims to assess the effects of novel auxinic herbicide exposure on plants\, pollinators\, and plant-pollinator interactions. In doing so\, we apply a holistic framework by investigating the impact of other relevant biotic factors present in agroecosystems (e.g. herbivores and soil microbes) that might also be important for mediating the consequences of herbicide exposure for plants and pollinators.

Dr. Cai will analyze the drivers behind these declines and offer predictions about China’s fertility future.\n   \n   Yong Cai’s research focuses on Chinese demography\, especially the one-child policy\, including its political causes and its demographic and social effects. He challenges the conventional narrative about how policy drove fertility changes. His research assesses China’s fertility from multiple sources to clarify uncertainties within official statistics. DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

Fehribach Center in Indianapolis hosts an internship program for college students with physical disabilities (mobility\, orthopedic\, visual\, &amp\; hearing) in which students are placed in apaid internship in a position that correlates with their academic major. Fehribach Center staff will give a virtual presentation for U-M students!To this point\, 228 students from 42 colleges have completed a totalof 468 internships\, with 65 students interning in the summer of 2023. Internships are available for students who just finished their freshman yearof college up to graduates within the last calendar year\, and internships can be provided for nearly all academic majors. Among the 46 employers who have hosted Fehribach Center interns are: Eskenazi Health\, Eli Lilly\,Cummins\, Ice Miller\, BraunAbility\, the Indiana Pacers\, the Indianapolis Children’s Museum\, Roche\, Republic Airways\, and Christel House International. DESCRIPTION:Originating from the German word “klasse” (class)\, both topological and algebraic K-theory operates\nunder the philosophy that studying certain isomorphism classes of objects over a space/ scheme/ ring/\ncategory is a good way to study that space (/scheme/ ring / category). In the case of topological K-theory\,\nwe’ll consider isomorphism classes of vector bundles over a space X\, whereas in algebraic\nK-theory we’ll look at finitely generated projective modules over a ring R. The Serre-Swan theorem will allow\nus to reconcile these stories on the level of K_0. We’ll finish the talk with an algebraic description of K_1(R)\nand K_2(R)\, as well as Quillen’s “+” construction for defining higher algebraic K-groups.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Magnetism of the RT_6 Sn_6 kagome metals
DESCRIPTION:Kagome metals are known for their unique electronic band structure containing flat bands and Dirac cones with topological character. This has elevated interest in kagome metals as an adaptable system to study the interplay of band topology with superconductivity\, itinerant magnetism\, and other charge instabilities that are driven by electronic correlations. In the RT_6 Sn_6 kagome metals\, conduction electrons within T=V\, Mn kagome bilayers interacts with the local magnetic moments of interleaved rare-earth (R) triangular layers. Here\, I will describe experimental neutron scattering and high-field magnetization data outlining the competing magnetic interactions and magnetic fluctuations that lead to a variety of collinear and non-collinear magnetic phases\, including the discovery of dual time-reversal symmetry-breaking in the Ising ferromagnet TbV_6 Sn_6. The development of spin chirality\, such as fluctuation-driven scalar spin chirality\, will also be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: For most of its history\, mathematics has been informal: proofs are written in natural language to convince human experts. This process has served us well -- but as AI begins to generate persuasive mathematical text\, it becomes harder to tell genuine insight from convincing error.\n\nFormal verification offers a foundation for trust. These tools\, first built for verifying hardware and software\, now reach deep into research mathematics through projects like Mathlib.\n\nFormalization and AI together hold great promise for mathematicians: verified automation of routine reasoning\, new connections between disparate areas\, and trustworthy collaboration and exploration. I will outline the current state and discuss ongoing efforts to help realize this vision.\n\nBio: Matthew Robert Ballard is Professor of Mathematics at the University of South Carolina and Associate Director at the Institute for Computer-Aided Reasoning in Mathematics. A Fellow of the American Mathematical Society\, Ballard is also a maintainer of Mathlib\, the library of formalized mathematics in Lean. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 2008.

DESCRIPTION:Metal-ion redox cooperativity is a recurrent theme in small molecule binding to and activation by metal surfaces\, cluster cofactors in biology\, and various homogeneous synthetic catalysts. Although readily identified when present\, the criteria that allow for and control cooperative reactivity are incompletely understood\, and partly hindering the design and use of cheaper 3d metals in catalysts for multi-electron redox transformations. Results from our efforts to use ligand design to dictate cooperativity in polynuclear transition metal complexes and the observed resultant small molecule activation will be presented.

DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/e3jPZ\n\nThis lecture explores the unexpected resonance between Korean modernist Lee Qoede (이쾌대\, 1913–1965) and the revolutionary spirit of Mexico’s great muralists. Lee and other Korean modernists were greatly inspired by the works of Diego Rivera\, José Clemente Orozco\, and David Alfaro Siqueiros\, whose monumental works\, like Rivera’s iconic Detroit Industry murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts\, still speak powerfully today.\n   \n   Through vivid comparisons\, Jinyoung Anna Jin will trace how the Mexican muralists’ bold public art inspired Lee’s own vision for a national art (minjok misool) for Korea rooted in resistance\, solidarity\, and the everyday lives of ordinary people. By revealing this overlooked transnational connection\, this talk invites the audience to see Lee’s legacy—and modern Korean art more broadly—anew as part of a larger global conversation about how art can stand on the front lines of history.\n   \n   Jinyoung A. Jin\, Ph.D.\, is the Director of Asian Art and Culture at Stony Brook University’s Charles B. Wang Center\, where she curates exhibitions and public programs that explore Asian art\, visual culture\, and transnational histories. Passionate about connecting diverse audiences with understudied narratives\, she fosters dialogue on how art\, history\, and politics shape our understanding of the world. DESCRIPTION:Full details at: https://myumi.ch/A1Wdy\n\nVladimir Kara-Murza\, Russian politician\, author\, historian\, and former political prisoner\, will receive the 2025 Wallenberg Medal from the University of Michigan on November 4th at 4:30PM in Rackham Auditorium. A close colleague of the slain opposition leader Boris Nemtsov\, he served as deputy leader of the People’s Freedom Party and was a candidate for the Russian Parliament. Leading diplomatic efforts on behalf of the opposition\, Kara-Murza played a key role in the adoption of Magnitsky sanctions against top Russian officials by the United States\, United Kingdom\, European Union\, Canada\, and Australia. Magnitsky sanctions are governmental sanctions against foreign individuals who have committed human rights abuses or been involved in significant corruption. For this work he was twice poisoned and left in a coma\; a joint media investigation by Bellingcat\, The Insider\, and Der Spiegel has determined that officers of the Russian Federal Security Services (FSB) were behind the attacks.\n\nIn April 2022\, Kara-Murza was arrested in Moscow for publicly denouncing the invasion of Ukraine and war crimes committed by Russian forces. Following a closed-door trial at the Moscow City Court\, he was sentenced to 25 years for “high treason” and kept in solitary confinement at a maximum-security prison in Siberia. He was released in August 2024 as part of the largest East-West prisoner exchange since the Cold War negotiated by the U.S. and German governments.\n\nKara-Murza is a contributing writer at the Washington Post\, winning the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for his columns written from prison\, and has previously worked for Echo of Moscow\, BBC\, RTVi\, Kommersant\, World Affairs\, and other media organizations. He has directed three documentary films and is the author or contributor to several books on Russian history and politics.\n\nKara-Murza serves as vice-president at the Free Russia Foundation\, as senior advisor at Human Rights First\, and as senior fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights in Montreal. He was the founding chairman of the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom and has led successful international efforts to commemorate Nemtsov\, including with street designations in Washington\, D.C. and London. Kara-Murza is a recipient of several awards\, including the Council of Europe’s Václav Havel Human Rights Prize\, and is an honorary fellow at Trinity Hall\, Cambridge. He holds an M.A. (Cantab.) in History from Cambridge. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Organ hosts a performance by guest artist Alan Morrison\, organ faculty member at the Curtis Institute of Music.\n\nGUEST ARTIST BIO\n\nALAN MORRISON is one of the most sought-after American concert organists\, performing in Alice Tully\, Jacoby\, Verizon\, Benaroya\, and Spivey halls\; Meyerson Symphony Center\; Overture Center\; Jack Singer Concert Hall\; the Crystal Cathedral\; National Cathedral in Washington\, D.C.\; and colleges\, cathedrals\, and churches throughout North America\, Europe\, Russia\, and Brazil.\n\nMr. Morrison has been a featured artist for numerous national and regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists. He won first prize in both the Mader (California) and Poister (New York) National Organ Competitions\, as well as the silver medal at the 1994 Calgary International Organ Festival. Mr. Morrison’s numerous recordings are regularly featured on radio stations worldwide\, and his television appearances include two episodes of *Mister Roger’s Neighborhood* as both an organist and pianist.\n\nA graduate of Curtis (organ and piano accompanying) and the Juilliard School (organ)\, Mr. Morrison is college organist at Ursinus College in Collegeville\, Pa. and organist in residence at Spivey Hall in Morrow\, Ga. He joined the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in 2002.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for World Performance Studies (CWPS) presents a guest scholar lecture by ethnomusicologist and curator Dr. Jennifer Kyker.\n\nThe Chicago Dzviti Photograph Collection presents the work of Chicago Dzviti (1961-1995)\, a pioneering Zimbabwean photographer whose archive offers an extensive visual record of Zimbabwean social\, cultural\, and musical life. In this talk\, Dr. Kyker discusses her work as curator of the collection\, including the touring exhibit \"Portrait of Zimbabwe.\" She focuses particularly on Chicago Dzviti's intimate portrayals of Zimbabwean musicians\, which make up a significant portion of the collection. As curator\, Dr. Kyker's ethnographic approach explores relationships between visual culture and sound\, using collaborative methods such as feedback interviews with musicians\, curated playlists\, and live performances by contemporary artists. Throughout\, Dr. Kyker emphasizes how the Zimbabwean philosophy of hunhu/ubuntu\, which articulates a vision of human identity predicated upon moral relationships between the self and others\, is reflected in Chicago Dzviti's photographs as well as in the musical traditions they portray.\n\nJENNIFER W. KYKER is Professor of Ethnomusicology in the Alfred Satz Music Department at the University of Rochester. Kyker is a former ACLS Fellow and three-time Fulbright Fellow. As a Fulbright Scholar her most recent project\, “Portrait of Zimbabwe/Mifananidzo yeZimbabwe\,” is a photographic exhibit co-curated with Fadzai Veronica Muchemwa at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe\, and which is currently touring at venues throughout Zimbabwe. Her other work includes the digital humanities project Sekuru’s Stories (sekuru.org)\, featuring the oral narratives of Zimbabwean mbira player Sekuru Tute Chigamba\, and the digital albums \"Karirai Nhenda\" and \"Solo Mbira Songs\,\" featuring members of the female mbira collective Mhare dzeNhare (ambuya.org). Her articles on listening and reception\, music and gender\, HIV/AIDS\, and Zimbabwean musical bows have appeared in Ethnomusicology\, Ethnomusicology Forum\, African Music\, and the American Journal of Public Health. In 2003\, Kyker founded the nonprofit organization Tariro\, which educates teenaged girls in Zimbabwean communities affected by HIV/AIDS and offers traditional music and dance instruction in low-income neighborhoods (tariro.org).

DESCRIPTION:The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at the University of Michigan Law School cordially invites you to join them at the 2026 Butch Carpenter Memorial Scholarship Gala.\n\nWe hold this annual event in memory of Alden J. “Butch” Carpenter\, a former University of Michigan Law School student. In 1977\, Carpenter entered law school to advocate for disinvested communities through his business and lawyering skills. Sadly\, Carpenter passed away during the winter semester of his first year of law school and did not get the chance to realize his dreams. On February 21st\, 1978\, only a few weeks after Carpenter’s untimely passing\, the BLSA membership voted unanimously to honor his memory by establishing the Alden J. “Butch” Carpenter Memorial Scholarship Fund. Paying homage to Carpenter’s lifework\, each year the fund awards scholarships to outstanding first-year BLSA members who are interested in business law and have demonstrated a commitment to community development.
