Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M. Systems with more than 1000 qubits in 2D arrays and gate fidelities approaching three nines are being developed by many academic and industrial groups. I will present recent progress at University of Wisconsin-Madison and Infleqtion with physical and logical qubit encodings. Interesting challenges remain in scaling the size and performance to the levels needed for quantum utility. Ultimately a modular approach to quantum computation will enable scaling to millions of qubits\, with inter-module connections enabled by photonic links. Recent results on entangling atoms with photons for scaling a modular architecture will be presented. \n\nBio:\nMark Saffman is a physicist working in the areas of atomic physics\, quantum and nonlinear optics\, and quantum information processing. His research team has been a pioneer in quantum computing with atomic qubits. They were the first to demonstrate a quantum CNOT gate for the deterministic entanglement of a pair of neutral atoms. This was done using interactions between highly excited Rydberg atoms. He is currently developing scalable arrays of neutral atoms for quantum computation\, communication\, and sensing applications. \nHe is the Johannes Rydberg Professor of Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been recognized with an Alfred P. Sloan fellowship\, a Vilas Associate Award\, the WARF Innovation Award\, and is a fellow of the American Physical Society\, and Optica. He has been active in professional service including two decades as an Associate Editor at the Physical Review\, and is the director of The Wisconsin Quantum Institute. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. In its first 15 years\, the clinic’s work resulted in the release of 45 people whose combined wrongful incarceration totaled more than 700 years. Professor Moran\, who retired as director of the clinic in 2024\, will discuss several cases in which the clinic won final exoneration for its clients and how these cases illustrate fundamental problems in the criminal justice system. Professor Moran holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics and mathematics and earned his J.D. from the U-M Law School. He has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court six times. The problem of electronic waste (e-waste) has captured public and scholarly attention\, especially in sites like Agbogbloshie in Accra\, Ghana with its dystopian vista of discarded computers\, televisions and other electronic trash. Energo-waste creates similar yet different problems and takes many different forms. Some can easily be classified as e-waste\, such as solar lanterns that no longer provide light\, power banks that no longer provide back-up power for mobile phones\, or batteries for solar panels that no longer store energy. These can accumulate in the corners of rooms or in trash pits behind homes to be buried or burned\, leaving a negative environmental impact either way. Others continue to mark landscapes with their presence: windmills and solar mini-grids that no longer produce power\, electric poles that no longer transmit or distribute power\, mini hydro projects decommissioned for being financially unviable. Far less obvious forms of energo-waste include the tens of thousands of acres appropriated from rural smallholders and transferred to foreign companies for the purpose of growing jatropha\, a crop once hailed as a clean biodiesel option but which quickly fell out of favor leaving large-scale land acquisitions sitting idle\; or the tens of thousands of acres of forest sequestered for carbon offset projects (REDD+) that similarly deprived local communities of their use but are now labeled “another failed conservation fad.” Drawing on long-term community-engaged work\, participant observation and interview data\, we ask: What are the social impacts of and responses to energo-waste? In this talk\, I will present my recent efforts to explore the most distant universe through a synergistic approach combining JWST\, ALMA\, and gravitational lensing\, enabling the most sensitive and comprehensive investigations of the earliest phases of galaxy formation. My systematic JWST spectroscopic survey confirms the high abundance of z > 9 galaxies previously suggested by photometric studies\, and I will discuss possible origins of this surprising excess based on our initial characterizations. I will also introduce the first infrared luminosity function derived from the largest faint ALMA sample ever compiled\, allowing a direct estimate of the total (unobscured + dust-obscured) cosmic star formation history up to z ~ 8. Our joint JWST and ALMA deep follow-up observations of a strongly lensed early galaxy reveal that what appears as a single disk-like structure is resolved into at least 15 individual young massive star clusters with effective radii of 10–50 pc\, dominating ~70% of the galaxy’s total flux and embedded within a smooth rotating disk (V/σ ~ 3). These findings suggest that stellar feedback is remarkably weak at these epochs\, providing a plausible explanation for the enhanced star formation activity inferred from our rest-UV and FIR studies. At the end of my talk\, I will also introduce my ~300-hour Cycle 4+5 JWST treasury program\, Vast Exploration for Nascent\, Unexplored Sources (VENUS) — JWST’s first wide lensing-cluster survey. By incorporating electrochemically responsive rate constants\, MsRKM allows direct comparison with current-voltage (I–V) profiles and predicts how mechanisms shift under varying conditions.\n\nOur findings show that chemical and electrical gradients—even when equal in Nernstian magnitude—drive fundamentally different transport behaviors. For example\, ClC-ec1 exhibits gradient-dependent mechanisms while the Shaker K⁺ channel requires gradient-shifting off-pathway flux. The Bethe Ansatz was introduced in 1931 by Hans Bethe to find eigenvectors and eigenvalues for the generator of a one-dimensional quantum spin system\, which is also the setting for this talk. While the Bethe Ansatz proved to be an effective computational tool\, providing deep insight into quantum spin chains\, it lacked many rigorous theoretical guarantees for many years. There has been much elucidating mathematical activity over the decades to understand the hidden symmetries and analytical consequences of the Bethe Ansatz\, and many theoretical questions have been answered. In this talk\, we address how to obtain exact dynamics for the Heisenberg-Ising XXZ spin-1/2 periodic chain using the Bethe Ansatz. We provide precise formulas to take a linear combination of the eigenvectors from the Bethe Ansatz and obtain exact dynamics. The formulas presented have been rigorously confirmed for some special cases and the general case has only been confirmed numerically.\nThis talk is aimed at a general math audience with no special background needed beyond linear algebra and analysis. The Falerii Novi Project\, which began in 2021\, has undertaken the first scientific excavations in a city famously founded after Romans sacked the nearby Faliscan city of Falerii Veteres and relocated its residents in 241 BCE. The partial urban plan of the site has been spectacularly revealed by geophysical remote sensing\, but our excavations are providing a refined chronology for the town’s occupation\, which was much more enduring than previously assumed\; surprising evidence for patterns of trade\, economic activity\, and environmental interactions\; and a comprehensive analysis of the city’s residential fabric. \n\nInstead of focusing on the city’s monumental and civic structures\, as is often the case for urban investigations\, our research questions are aimed at understanding processes of urban development from the bottom up. We have therefore focused on mundane spaces\, such as shops\, houses\, and roadside bars\, to provide a more complete picture of Roman urbanism beyond elite and administrative spaces. The project is arguably the most methodologically diverse investigation of a Roman town to date.\n\nMargaret M.
