SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brothers and Uncles\, Kings and Typecutters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Modeling Human Trust and Behavior Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:Join Hyesun Chung\, Ph.D. candidate in Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan and Barbour Fellow\, for a seminar on advancing our understanding of human trust and behavioral dynamics in human-autonomy interaction. Building on her interdisciplinary background in engineering\, design\, and psychology\, Hyesun will explore how humans and intelligent agents collaborate beyond one-to-one settings—extending to multi-agent and team-based environments. She will discuss her research on modeling and predicting trust dynamics profiles based on individual characteristics\, as well as her studies on the relationship between trust and altruism in multi-operator\, single-agent systems. Together\, these insights inform the design of adaptive\, trust-aware autonomous agents that enhance human–AI teaming and support cooperative\, human-centered autonomy.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Quantifying the Real-World Impacts of Vehicle Electrification : From Passenger Cars to Transit Buses
DESCRIPTION:Electrification is transforming road transport\, yet its impacts and benefits vary widely across vehicle types\, use cases\, and regional conditions. This talk will provide an overview of our ongoing research quantifying the environmental and operational implications of vehicle electrification across different segments. We examine how electric passenger cars\, delivery vans\, and transit buses differ in their energy use\, emissions\, and cost trajectories using a combination of data-driven modeling\, optimization\, and system analysis. Example studies I will introduce in this talk include regional life cycle emissions assessment for passenger cars\, real-world energy consumption prediction for delivery fleets\, and transition planning for clean bus networks using a multi-stage stochastic optimization model . Together\, these studies demonstrate how analytical and data-driven methods can help us investigate vehicle performance\, fleet operations\, and system-level emissions outcomes\, providing actionable insights.\n---\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Tuğçe Yüksel is an Assistant Professor in Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Sabancı University\, Istanbul\, Turkey. She earned her B.S. (2007) and M.S. (2010) degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Middle East Technical University\, Turkey. She received her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2015 as a member of Vehicle Electrification Group and Design Decisions Laboratory. Her research focuses on evaluating the performance\, cost and environmental benefits of technology and operation conditions in vehicle electrification.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Mission Impossible? Probing the Higgs boson-charm quark coupling with the CMS Experiment
DESCRIPTION:How strongly the Higgs boson couples to second-generation quarks remains a central open question for testing the Standard Model’s flavor structure. I will present the CMS program targeting the Higgs boson-charm quark Yukawa coupling via Higgs decays to a pair of charm quarks. I will focus on a new search in the until-recently unexplored production mode where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a top-quark pair\, and discuss complementary searches in associated production with W or Z bosons. The key enabling tools in these searches are cutting-edge jet-flavor identification algorithms and novel analysis strategies that exploit event-level correlations\, both of which are powered by state-of-the-art deep learning techniques. I will outline prospects at the HL-LHC and close with opportunities at future Higgs factories.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Veterans Week: Global War on Terror Veterans Panel
DESCRIPTION:The time period from the moment on Sept. 11\, 2001\, when the U.S. was attacked to the present day has been defined as a global war on terror. Unlike previous wars and conflicts\, and much like the Cold War of the last century\, this war’s boundaries\, objectives\, end\, and even enemies have been elusive to pin down. It has resulted in two wars\, many smaller conflicts\, and many lives lost. In this panel\, we hear from the men and women who have served during this era.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships: Adrienne Wood
DESCRIPTION:Adrienne Wood of the University of Virginia joins the RCGD Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships.\n\nClose friendships are essential for well-being and are often built on shared interests\, identities\, or experiences. But interacting with new and diverse social partners also offers benefits\, like novelty\, a sense of belonging\, and future friendship. A healthy social network therefore balances social exploitation (investing in familiar relationships) and social exploration (interacting with strangers and embracing differences). In this talk\, I first present survey and experience sampling data that suggests preferences for spending time with friends versus acquaintances predict distinct patterns in well-being and social network structure. Despite its benefits\, social exploration comes with challenges: it can be harder to connect and or find common ground with dissimilar others. Drawing on sociocentric network data\, I show that successful exploration hinges not just on who we meet\, but how we perceive them: perceived similarity\, more than actual similarity\, predicts outcomes like belonging and even shared laughter. These findings suggest that the explore-exploit tradeoff in social life is not just about who we spend time with\, but how we bridge the unfamiliar into the familiar.\n\nAbout the series:\n\nHumans are social animals and from the earliest days of life\, are dependent on the quality of social relationships with significant others: family\, kin\, friends\, and a growing social network of online acquaintances. But\, how do we conduct research and come to understand the social processes transpiring in these significant social connections with others? What are the consequences for individual development and mental health outcomes of having close intimate relationships in one’s life? There is also a darker side to some relationships in the form of violence\, aggression\, and conflict. How do we study these processes? Social media and artificial intelligence have opened up new ways of thinking about “what is a social relationship?” and how many of these “friends” can one truly have.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on different types of social relationships\, spanning family and parent-child relationships\, friendships\, peer networks\, romantic relationships\, attachment relationships\, and the use of online media to maintain social connections. Although several speakers are senior scholars with extensive research backgrounds in the field\, many are junior scholars who are traversing new paths into the science of social relationships. Please join us Mondays to learn more about the exciting field of social relationships!\n\nThese events are held Mondays from 3:30 to 5.\nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrganized by Brenda Volling and Richard Gonzalez.\nAs permissions allow\, seminars are later posted to our YouTube playlist.

He attended Evans Community Adult School and completed high school in 2006 at the age of 29. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in 2009 from Los Angeles City College. In the fall of 2012 Narsiso earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University Long Beach. In the spring of 2018 he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting from California State University Long Beach\, and was awarded the prestigious Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship in Painting and Sculpture. His work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. His work is in the collections of the Hammer Museum\, OCMA\, Amon Carter Museum of American Art\, University of Arizona Museum of Art\, Long Beach Museum of Art\, Crocker Art Museum\, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon\, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Martinez lives and works in Long Beach\, CA.\n\nDr. Iglesias-Rios’s research interests are the intersection of environmental and occupational health with precarious employment and labor exploitation in vulnerable populations. Her previous research assessed the impact of labor trafficking by studying how patterns of violence and coercion affect the mental health of female and male trafficking survivors including children\, adolescents and adults. She also sought to understand how the living and working conditions during trafficking affect the mental health of survivors. Dr. Iglesias-Rios is the Co-Investigator of the Michigan Farmworker Project\, a community-based participatory project that assess the working and living conditions of migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the state of Michigan. The focus of the research is to investigate indicators of precarious employment and labor exploitation that involve psychosocial\, occupational and environmental exposures and complex contextual conditions (social\, economic and physical milieu) of farmworkers.\n\nAmanda Krugliak is a curator and artist known for performative\, conceptual\, and experiential installations\, in charge of programming for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery since 2009. In 2012\, she co-created the internationally recognized installation *State of Exception *with artist Richard Barnes and U-M anthropologist Jason De León based upon De León’s Undocumented Migration Project. She is frequently a guest lecturer and leads workshops on curating scholarship and the gallery as a social justice practice.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra Seminar: The weak normalization of an affine semigroup
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This talk is on joint work with Srishti Singh (Mizzou). I'll discuss our recent preprint about affine semigroup rings\, which are fun and important examples of commutative rings formed from the combinatorial data of an affine semigroup\, which is a subset of N^n (or sometimes Z^n) which contains the zero vector and are closed under the usual +. We studied the problem of Frobenius closure in affine semigroup rings\, which\, due to some theorems of Bruns-Li-Römer\, are controlled by the (weak) normalization map. We construct an adjustment to an affine semigroup A which we called the p-weak normalization of A\, which depends on a fixed prime number p\, and from that we are able to bound Frobenius closure in the corresponding affine semigroup ring over a field of that characteristic. We also provide a script which compute this new weak normalization and then can use Macaulay2 to compute Frobenius closure in affine semigroup rings defined over Z/pZ.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:From Digital Humanities to AI Humanities? Ethics\, Algorithms\, and History
DESCRIPTION:Building on the arguments in his recent book\, Ethics of the Algorithm: Digital Humanities and Holocaust Memory (2024)\, this talk focuses on the challenges and possibilities of using computational methods to interpret the legacies of historical violence and archives of testimonial witnessing. Moving between ‘digital humanities’ and ‘AI humanities\,’ Presner explores the meaning-making processes of algorithms and interrogates the decision-making mechanisms of Large Language Models for the study of history and memory.\n\nTodd Presner is Chair of UCLA’s Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies and serves as Special Advisor to Vice Chancellor Roger Wakimoto in the Office for Research and Creative Activities (2018-present). Previously\, he was the chair of UCLA’s Digital Humanities Program (2011-21)\, and from 2011-2018\, he served as the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Director of the Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies. From 2018-21\, he was Associate Dean of Digital Innovation. He holds the Michael and Irene Ross Chair in the UCLA Division of the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Automatic convergence for modular forms
DESCRIPTION:Quaternionic modular forms (QMFs) are a type of non-holomorphic automorphic function that exist on certain forms of the exceptional groups\, and on orthogonal groups SO(4\,n) with n at least 3. They have a robust notion of Fourier coefficients\, defined in an analytic way. Using the Fourier coefficients\, I will give an algebraic characterization of the cuspidal quaternionic modular forms (on F_4\, E_6\, E_7\, E_8) in terms of holomorphic modular forms on smaller rank groups. That is\, I will explain how cuspidal QMFs on these exceptional groups can be reconstructed from holomorphic modular forms on groups of type SO(2\,n) and SL_2 in an algebraic way. As a consequence\, I deduce that the cuspidal QMFs on F_4\, E_6\, E_7\, and E_8 have a basis where every element of this basis has all Fourier coefficients being algebraic numbers.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Global Working Hours (joint with Emmanuel Saez)
DESCRIPTION:This paper uses labor force surveys from 160 countries to build a new microdatabase on hours worked covering 97% of the world population in cross section. We also construct time series spanning over 20 years in 86 countries. Hours worked per adult are slightly bell-shaped with GDP per capita but weakly correlated with development overall. Hours worked by the young (aged 15-19) and elderly (aged 60+) decline with development\, driven by growing school attendance and public pension coverage. Hours worked among prime-age adults (aged 20-59) are mildly bell-shaped with development for men while they are increasing for women. The fall in male hours in middle-to-higher income countries is driven by reduced hours per worker and is offset by increases in female labor force participation. These two forces have exactly compensated each other in many countries\, leading to a remarkable long-run stability of prime-age hours worked. Labor taxes are strongly negatively correlated with prime-age hours worked both in international comparisons and overtime within countries. Controlling for government transfers only partly reduces the link between labor taxes and prime-age hours\, ruling out substitution and income effects on labor supply as the only driver. Controlling for working hours regulations and the size of the formal sector eliminates this link\, suggesting that regulations also play a large role in reducing intensive hours in higher-income countries.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Combinatorics Seminar: Plabic Fences and clusters on double Bott-Samelson varieties
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will introduce the double Bott-Samelson varieties\, whose cluster structures have been studied by Shen-Weng. In their work\, they computed these cluster variables as principal minors of certain matrices coming from pairs of decorated flags. We will give a combinatorial approach to computing these cluster variables\, via a matching construction on plabic fences which generalizes the Muller-Speyer's minimal matching construction of twisted Plücker coordinates on open positroid varieties. This is a joint work with João Pedro Carvalho.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Disability and the Return of Eugenics and the Poor Law
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the 20th Century and the first quarter of the 21st\, U.S. disability policy increasingly pursued the goals of equality\, inclusion\, integration\, and empowerment for people with disabilities. Moving away from the eugenic principles that dominated the first part of this period\, policy increasingly treated disability as something to be accommodated rather than eliminated\, and disabled people as folks who should be supported to live full lives in the community. \n\nBut recent events -- punitive responses to mental illness and homelessness at the state and federal levels\, the dramatic retrenchment of Medicaid and other support programs during the past few months\, and others -- threaten to return us to the world of the Eugenics Era and the English Poor Laws before that\, in which disability is treated as a drain on society and those with disabilities are to be highly regulated. \n\nThis lecture will elaborate on these points.\n\nSince 2018\, Hal and Carol Kohn and the Kohn Charitable Trust have committed a total of $17 million to the Ford School to establish the Kohn Collaborative for Social Policy\, a hub that will catalyze interdisciplinary research and policy impact to promote social equity and inclusion for all U.S. residents. The collaborative consists of three pillars: Kohn Professors\, Kohn Scholars\, and policy impact. The Arlene Susan Kohn Professor of Social Policy is one of five Kohn professorships\, specifically to support research that contributes to policies advancing the rights of disabled individuals in the United States. It was named in honor of Hal’s twin sister\, born with Down syndrome\, who passed away in 2016.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\n\nSamuel Bagenstos is the Arlene Susan Kohn Professor of Social Policy. at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and Frank G. Millard Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School.\n\nFrom June 2022 to December 2024\, he served as General Counsel to the Department of Health and Human Services. He played a key role in advancing and implementing policies across the Department\, including pursuing several initiatives on abortion and reproductive rights\; crafting and defending the first-ever Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program\; drafting and issuing major rules on civil rights\, health privacy\, Medicare and Medicaid\, drug advertising\, the regulation of \"lab-developed\" medical tests and of food safety\, the treatment of unaccompanied migrant children in HHS care\, the treatment of LGBT kids in the foster care system\, and many other issues\; advancing marijuana rescheduling\; advising and defending the Food and Drug Administration's tobacco enforcement program\; and working with the Department of Justice on litigation involving HHS\, including significant abortion rights\, free speech\, and tobacco regulation cases in the Supreme Court.\n\nFrom Inauguration Day 2021 to June 2022\, he served as General Counsel to the Office of Management and Budget. There\, he worked on President Biden's Day One executive orders\; helped respond to COVID\, including implementing several crucial aid programs\; responded to regulations adopted by the prior administration just before the inauguration and helped advance the new administration's regulations on labor\, health\, the environment\, and much else\; helped craft and implement the American Rescue Plan\, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law\, and what became the Inflation Reduction Act\; and assisted in developing two annual budgets\, along with advising the entire Executive Branch on issues of appropriations law and administrative law.\n\nIn an earlier stint on leave from the University\, from 2009 to 2011\, Bagenstos was an appointee in the US Department of Justice\, where he served as the principal deputy assistant attorney general for civil rights\, the number two official in the Civil Rights Division. There\, he helped promulgate the 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations—the first comprehensive update of those regulations since they were first issued in 1991—and led the reinvigoration of the Civil Rights Division’s enforcement of the US Supreme Court’s decision in Olmstead v. L.C.\, which guarantees people with disabilities the right to live and receive services in the most integrated setting appropriate. He led the negotiations of significant Olmstead settlements with the states of Delaware and Georgia\, which guarantee appropriate\, community-based services to thousands of people with disabilities. He also personally argued major cases in federal district courts and courts of appeals.\n\nAs an academic\, Bagenstos has published articles in journals such as the Yale Law Journal\, the Stanford Law Review\, the Columbia Law Review\, the California Law Review\, the Virginia Law Review\, the Cornell Law Review\, the Georgetown Law Journal\, and many others. He also has published two books: Law and the Contradictions of the Disability Rights Movement (Yale University Press\, 2009) and Disability Rights Law: Cases and Materials (Foundation Press\, originally published in 2010 but now working on the fourth edition)\, and he has written articles for nonacademic audiences in publications such as Democracy: A Journal of Ideas\, The American Prospect\, The Washington Monthly\, Slate\, and The New Republic.\n\nBagenstos is actively involved in public and community affairs\, both in Ann Arbor and statewide. Pursuant to an appointment by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer\, he served as chair of the Michigan Employment Relations Commission\, the state agency that enforces the rights of public employees to unionize and collectively bargain. Pursuant to an appointment by Mayor Christopher Taylor\, he served as a member of the Ann Arbor Housing Commission. He has also been a frequent cooperating attorney with the ACLU of Michigan.
