SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brothers and Uncles\, Kings and Typecutters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibit- Closer: A look at the tiny world around us
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exhibit featuring the photography of Joseph Ferraro\, free and open to the public at Matthaei Botanical Gardens.\n\n \n\nBIO\n\nJoseph is a conservation photographer living and working in southeast Michigan. In 2014\, using macro photography to explore his backyard garden\, he unknowingly began walking a naturalist’s path and documenting native pollinators and invertebrates. His large format prints of local invertebrates are currently on exhibit outside of the Belle Isle Nature Center\, with other works on exhibit inside the Center. With them\, he seeks to inspire viewers to take a closer look at the tiny world around us.\n\n \n\nArtist Statement\n\nTo me\, the little things matter.\n\nThrough my work as a photographer\, I share the unseen and overlooked world of nature that surrounds us. My focus is exploring the world of invertebrates and showcasing these creatures in their natural habitat.\n\nMy creative process has evolved into a moving mediation\, as I Slow down to observe\, document and connect with my subjects as we interact in the environment. Ultimately\, I seek to capture the unique beauty of creatures not usually perceived as beautiful and aim to create images that evoke emotion and curiosity. In so doing I strive to raise awareness of the importance of these creatures in our world and dispel any fears the viewer may have.\n\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/josephferraro/\n\nWeb: https://www.joseph-ferraro.com

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combining Complements: Theory and Evidence from Cancer Treatment Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Innovations often combine several components to achieve outcomes greater than the “sum of the parts.” We argue that such combination innovations can introduce an understudied inefficiency—a positive market expansion externality that benefits the owners of the components. We demonstrate the importance of this externality in the market for pharmaceutical cancer treatments\, where drug combination therapies have proven highly effective. Using data on clinical trial investments\, we document several facts consistent with inefficiently low private innovation: firms are less likely than publicly funded researchers to trial combinations\, firms are less likely to trial combinations including other firms’ drugs than those including their own drugs\, and firms often wait to trial combinations including other firms’ drugs until those drugs experience generic entry. Using microdata on drug prices and utilization\, we quantify the externalities that arise from new combinations and find that the market expansion externality often dominates the standard negative business stealing externality\, suggesting too little innovation in combination therapies. As a result\, firms may have incentives to free ride off others’ innovation\, which we analyze with a dynamic structural model of innovation decisions. We use the model to design cost-effective policies that advance combination innovation. Redirecting publicly funded innovation toward combinations with high predicted market expansion or consumer surplus spillovers minimizes crowd out of private investments\, increasing the rate of combination innovation and total welfare while remaining budget neutral.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)\nPhase 1 Curatorial Statement\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Amelia Burns (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Erin McKenna (courtyard pillar)\nArtists Amelia Burns and Erin McKenna reimagine the Division Street pillars through digital collages rooted in memory\, landscape and shared environments. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Website / Instagram\nErin McKenna Erin McKenna is an interdisciplinary artist with a background in sculpture. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. With a feminist lens\, she explores the space where necessity meets excess\, highlighting the subversive potential of both. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. Her process follows personal rules:\nno hierarchy of materialssubvert expected usecomplicate binaries\, stereotypes and associationsmisuse\, misapplyallow for variable arrangementsrepeat\, reiterate\, reuseconsider the subversive possibilities of the excessive\, fantastic\, and necessaryalways let the labor be visible\nMcKenna earned her BFA from Columbus College of Art &amp\; Design in 2012 and later completed her MFA at Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan. She recently moved back to the forest she calls home in Southeastern Ohio\, where she serves as Exhibitions Director at The Dairy Barn Arts Center\, hunts for mushrooms with her toddler\, and makes quilts. SUMMARY:Other:FASPE Information Session (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:FASPE is an intensive\, two-week study program in professional ethics and ethical leadership. FASPE is neither a Holocaust studies course\, nor a genocide prevention program. Rather\, the curriculum is designed to challenge Fellows to critically examine constructs\, current developments and issues that raise ethical concerns in their professions in contemporary settings where they study and work. FASPE Design and Technology (D&T) Fellows examine the motivations and conduct of technologists and designers in enabling and executing Nazi policies. FASPE then draws on these historical examples to help D&T Fellows grasp their role and responsibilities as designers of built environments\; and to encourage them to identify and confront ethical issues currently facing architects\, engineers\, designers\, and other technologists today.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Broadening direct searches for light dark matter
DESCRIPTION:Direct searches for low-mass DM were originally designed using the same conceptual picture as WIMP searches. However\, over the last five years\, the crucial role of in-medium effects has come into sharp focus. A new theoretical framework in the language of condensed matter physics has emerged for understanding the relationship between the properties of detector systems and their sensitivity to DM interactions. I will report on three recent advances that leverage this formalism to substantially broaden the design considerations for the next generation of experiments\, and even extract new constraints from existing data. First\, for DM–electron interactions\, large new datasets generated by the materials science community have enabled the first data-driven search for optimal detector materials\, which promises to significantly enhance the sensitivity of near-future experiments. Second\, just as detectors designed to detect nuclear scattering have been used to study electronic scattering\, I will explain how in-medium effects make the reverse possible as well\, allowing us to set new limits on DM–nucleon scattering using the low-threshold detectors designed to detect electronic scattering. Third\, with the advent of low-threshold detectors sensitive to energy deposits as low as 50 meV\, we have finally entered the regime where the interaction rate can be significantly enhanced due to the geometry of the detector system. These three considerations promise to substantially accelerate the search for light DM in both mass and cross section over the coming years.

SUMMARY:Presentation:LRCCS Occasional Lecture Series | Transgender in Late Imperial China
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/D8RV8\n\nThrough court cases\, fiction\, and late-Qing newspaper accounts\, Matthew Sommer’s new book considers a range of transgender experiences in Imperial China\, illuminating how certain forms of gender transgression were sanctioned in particular contexts and penalized in others. People moved away from the gender they were assigned at birth in different ways and for many reasons. Eunuchs\, boy actresses\, and clergy left behind normative gender roles defined by family and procreation. Anatomical males who presented as women sometimes took a conventionally female occupation such as midwife\, faith healer\, or even medium to a fox spirit — yet\, suspected of sexual predation\, they risked death for the crime of “masquerading in women’s attire\,” even when they had lived peacefully in their communities for years. Sommer scrutinizes the ways authorities and literati understood gender-nonconforming people\, contrasting official ideology with popular mentalities. An unprecedented account of China’s transgender histories\, this book sheds new light on law\, religion\, medicine\, literature\, and culture.\n \n Matthew H. Sommer (BA Swarthmore\, MA U. of Washington\, PHD UCLA) is the Bowman Family Professor of History at Stanford University. A social and legal historian of Qing dynasty China (1644-1912)\, his research uses original legal case records from local and central archives to explore gender\, sexuality\, and family. He is the author of Sex\, Law\, And Society in Late Imperial China (Stanford 2000) and Polyandry and Wife-Selling in Qing Dynasty China (California 2015)\, which was the inaugural winner of the American Society for Legal History’s Peter Gonville Stein Book Award. His latest book\, The Fox Spirit\, the Stone Maiden\, and Other Transgender Histories from Late Imperial China (Columbia 2024) won the Boswell Prize from the LGBTQ+ History Association. Future plans include a fourth book\, “Male Same-Sex Relations and Masculinity in Qing China\,” and a fifth\, “Criminal Procedure in Eighteenth-Century China.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Mathematics Undergraduate Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Typically\, Brownian Motion is constructed from the set of continuous functions from [0\, \infty) into \mathbb{R}. However\, can we modify Brownian Motion such that we can construct it from the set of all paths in \mathbb{R} rather than the continuous ones? In this talk\, we will explore this notion\, along with other concepts in stochastic analysis.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MPSDS / JPSM Seminar Series: Achieving Fairness in AI with Synthetic Data
DESCRIPTION:MPSDS / JPSM Seminar Series\nMPSDS M3 Series: Mastery\, Methodology\, Meetups\n\nIn person\, room 1070\, Institute for Social Research and via Zoom. \nThe Zoom call be be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation. \nPlease note that many of the links have changed.\n\nAchieving Fairness in AI with Synthetic Data\nArtificial intelligence and machine learning increasingly inform decisions in hiring\, lending\, healthcare\, and justice. Yet real-world datasets often encode historical bias\, and models trained on them can reproduce or amplify inequities. Pre-processing via fair synthetic data is a promising: if we can generate data that mitigates bias at the source while preserving signal\, downstream models can be both fair and useful. This talk introduces FDA (Fair synthetic data via Data Augmentation)\, a statistically principled framework that makes the fairness–faithfulness trade-off explicit and controllable. FDA jointly models a fair submodel and a faithful submodel\, coupled by a single parameter $\alpha \in [0\,1]$ that quantifies the fraction of bias removed. We prove clear operating points: $\alpha=0$ yields maximal fairness (with larger deviation from the original distribution)\, $\alpha=1$ recovers the original data in probability (hence in distribution)\, and intermediate $\alpha$ values guarantee calibrated compromises with interpretable bounds. Practically\, FDA samples directly from simple predictive distributions\, avoiding heavy black-box training. We further provide theory connecting FDA’s $\alpha$ to fairness of downstream models. Together\, these results deliver a transparent\, efficient\, and deployable path to generating fair synthetic data without sacrificing essential statistical structure.\n\nDr. Bei Jiang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Alberta\, a Fellow of the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii)\, and a Canada CIFAR AI Chair. She received her PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan in 2014\, followed by a postdoctoral appointment in the Department of Biostatistics at Columbia University (2014–2015)\, before joining the University of Alberta as an Assistant Professor in 2015. Dr. Jiang has authored more than 50 journal articles—including in the Annals of Statistics\, Journal of the American Statistical Association and the Journal of Machine Learning Research and over 20 peer-reviewed conference papers at venues such as NeurIPS\, ICML\, ICLR\, and AAAI. Her research focuses on Bayesian hierarchical modeling\, statistical learning methods that advance privacy and fairness\, and federated statistical inference. Dr. Jiang has an extensive record of service to the statistical community. She is currently serving on the SSC Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion Committee\, the CANSSI Showcase Organizing Committee\, the Committee of the COPSS Presidents’ Award\, and the JSM 2026 Program Committee. She is an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Statistical Association. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | The JWST Revolution in High-Redshift Supernova Discovery
DESCRIPTION:The high-redshift transient universe has been an unexplored field of astrophysics due to the vast amount of resources required to discover supernovae (SNe) at z>1. Even with the Hubble Space Telescope\, discoveries of the most distant stellar explosions have been restricted to z~2\, with critical spectroscopy limited to z~1.5. With the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)\, we have entered a new era of high-redshift SN discovery and understanding. JWST has significantly expanded our view of the transient universe\, including hundreds of SNe and dozens of rest-frame UV-IR spectra for SNe reaching z=5.13. The JWST SN sample with both imaging and spectroscopy now includes the most distant Type Ia SNe (used for cosmological measurements) yet discovered\, multiple strongly lensed SNe\, and a wide variety of core-collapse SN sub-types from a previously unexplored phase of the transient universe. I will summarize the range of discoveries made in the first few years of JWST observations\, the constraints gleaned from these exciting new objects\, and our ongoing efforts to build the first statistical samples of high-redshift SNe. Looking ahead\, these SNe give us a glimpse at what we can expect from the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope\, which will revolutionize the discovery of distant stellar explosions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Let Learners ‘Clock the Tea’ in Problematization and Assessment in Engineering Education
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This presentation will present milestones from two ongoing projects (Project RISE\, Eradicate the Gate) that highlight research with K12 students and how engineering education can be transformed through student-generated data and assessment. What happens when students generate the data and how do we as researchers facilitate that? How forward thinking can we be as researchers to facilitate freedom in learning and its resultant creativity in assessment?\n\nProject RISE is a transdisciplinary project for middle and high school students with an innovative curriculum integrating civics and engineering design thinking\, and a new software that supports students\, teachers\, and researcher in unique ways. This project investigates questions about problem identification and articulation\, brainstorming\, and online communities. Eradicate the Gate is a recently terminated NSF CAREER award whose goal is to reduce gatekeeping by empowering learners and reverse engineering assessment. This project distributes power by partnering with students as co-designers in ways that can teach educators and researchers.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning seminar in algebraic combinatorics: Tropical Grassmannians and Tropical Linear Spaces
DESCRIPTION:This is a follow-up on Jayden's talk. Tropical Grassmannians are polyhedral fans and we introduce how to construct a polyhedral complex that captures their combinatorics. In the case k=2 (Grassmannian of lines)\, we establish an isomorphism between this polyhedral complex and the simplicial complex of phylogenetic trees. We also establish a one-to-one correspondence between the tropical Grassmannian and a subset of the Dressian given by tropical linear spaces of \"realizable\" valuated matroids.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Number Theory: Algebraic automorphic representations of small motivic weight
DESCRIPTION:Chenevier and Lannes proved that there are only finitely many level 1 algebraic automorphic representations of PGL_n of motivic weight ≤23. Furthermore\, they completely classified 11 such representations of motivic weight ≤22. The proof is based on the explicit formula for the Jacquet–Piatetski-Shapiro–Shalika L-functions. Positivity results impose restrictions on the L-parameters of the archimedean components of such representations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Diversity Paradox: Evidence from College Coeducation
DESCRIPTION:How novel ideas are adopted and recognized is crucial to scientific progress\, but not all ideas from all groups are equally recognized. This paper studies whether and how increasing gender diversity at universities may lead to greater inclusion and recognition of research traditionally associated with women. Leveraging the transitions to coeducation of 88 all-male universities and novel text-based measures of research content\, we show that coeducation led to overall modest shifts toward female-associated research. This aggregate effect masks substantial heterogeneity across fields: in disciplines with higher early female representation\, we observe a pronounced increase in female-associated research driven by both existing faculty and new entrants. Male-dominated fields\, by contrast\, exhibit little change or even declines in female-associated research\, primarily due to changes in hiring practices. These findings highlight that while diversity can foster innovation\, its effects may only be concentrated in areas already receptive to the new perspectives.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Cosmological results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument
DESCRIPTION:A quarter-century after the discovery of the accelerated expansion of the universe\, the constraints on dark energy that powers this acceleration have become very good\, but the physical nature of dark energy remains elusive. I will present and discuss cosmological results from the measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the three years of observations from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. These results\, when combined with other data\, have indicated a possible new anomaly in the behavior of dark energy\, which has caused both excitement and consternation in the field of cosmology. I will discuss these findings and their implication for our understanding of the physics of the universe.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Data & AI in Society Lecture Series | Energy Optimal AI
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAI is becoming an integral part of our lives—helping with everything from drafting emails to diagnosing diseases. But behind the scenes\, AI tools consume massive amounts of electricity. Training just one large AI model can use as much energy as thousands of U.S. homes do in a year. And as AI adoption grows\, so does its appetite for power.\n\nThis surge in energy demand drives up operational costs\, puts pressure on already-congested power infrastructure\, and makes it harder to bring AI to places without reliable electricity. These barriers are becoming major bottlenecks for deploying and scaling AI systems.\n\nThrough the ML Energy Initiative\, we’re working to address these challenges. We’ve built tools to measure energy use\, reduce waste\, and design AI systems that are more efficient—without sacrificing the accuracy of AI models. In this talk\, I’ll share how smarter energy use can make AI more affordable and accessible.\n\nMeet Mosharaf Chowdhury:\nMosharaf Chowdhury is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, where he leads the SymbioticLab. His research focuses on making AI/ML workloads more efficient\, with a particular emphasis on reducing their energy consumption through the ML Energy Initiative. Major open-source projects from his team include Infiniswap\, the first scalable memory disaggregation solution\; FedScale\, a planetary-scale AI/ML platform\; TPP\, a tiered memory manager integrated into the Linux kernel (v5.18+)\; and Zeus\, the first energy-optimal generative AI stack. Previously\, Mosharaf invented the concept of coflows and was one of the original creators of Apache Spark. He has received numerous individual honors\, including fellowships and paper awards from NSDI\, OSDI\, ATC\, and MICRO.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Peter Miksza: \"The Art and Science of Practice: Skill Acquisition\, Self-Regulation\, and Expertise in Music\"
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music Education hosts guest scholar Peter Miksza as part of the Carrigan Lecture Series. Free and open to the public.\n\nFor music educators\, a key aspiration is helping developing musicians stand on their own as learners. A key step in this process is teaching them how to practice\, enabling them to act as their own instructors. Although the goal is clear\, the path toward it can be complex. Grounded in research\, this session will draw on psychological theories to illuminate the factors that shape effective practice. Studies on practice\, motivation\, and learning will be explored to show how research helps explain musical skill development. Evidence-based strategies for fostering self-regulated practice will be introduced.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nPETER MIKSZA is Professor of Music Education and Chair of the Music Education Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He co-directs the IU Music and Mind Lab and researches psychological and social dimensions of musical skill\, teacher preparation\, and music education policy. Widely published and active internationally\, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses\, advises research projects\, and serves as Editor of the Journal of Research in Music Education. Miksza previously taught in New Jersey and at the University of Colorado.

SUMMARY:Performance:Bob Schneider & Rhett Miller
DESCRIPTION:Austin\, Texas-based singer-songwriter and former frontman of The Ugly Americans and The Scabs\, Bob Schneider is one of the most-celebrated musicians in the live music capital. Combining diverse styles\, Schneider's music spans genres\, blending elements of folk\, rock\, rap\, funk\, bluegrass\, reggae and country with the more traditional singer/songwriter aesthetic. In short\, FRUNK. Schneider draws inspiration from the '70s with a modern twist. His lyrics\, both playful and powerful\, tackle tough subjects about alienation\, addiction\, and lost romance.\n\nSchneider has won more than 59 Austin Music Awards including Best Album\, Best Songwriter\, Best Musician\, and Best Male Vocals making him the most decorated artist in Austin music history. He has released more than a dozen albums (with a new one on the way). He has also written over 1\,000 songs\, is a published author and an avid painter and collage artist. He does all this while playing over a hundred shows a year and he doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon.\n\nTexas native Rhett Miller is perhaps best known as the frontman of the Dallas-based alt-country band the Old 97's\, although he has also pursued a critically acclaimed solo career. Strictly speaking\, Miller launched his own career before the Old 97's were formed. He recorded his first solo album\, a series of acoustic folk songs entitled Mythologies\, in 1989. Future Old 97's bassist (and a solid songwriter in his own right) Murry Hammond produced the album\, and their partnership later blossomed into a full-fledged band. \n\nIn 2018 Miller released his seventh solo record\, The Messenger\, on ATO records.\n\nIn addition to his songwriting\, Miller has also written short stories\, essays\, and articles that have appeared in Rolling Stone\, Salon\, The Atlantic\, and McSweeney’s.
