SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brothers and Uncles\, Kings and Typecutters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Are Fiscal Transfers Inflationary?
DESCRIPTION:We assess the inflationary effects of fiscal transfers by leveraging advances in the identification of fiscal policy shocks within the recently proposed rotational invariant time-varying structural vector autoregression. Our analysis suggests that the fiscal transfers shocks can explain the bulk of the contributions to the post-pandemic in- creases inflation until mid 2021. Thereafter\, inflation has been mainly driven by supply chain and demand shocks. In addition\, we find that fiscal transfers were essential for preventing a decline in real output per capita similar to the one experienced during the Great Depression.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - Effects of lake habitat and carbon supplementation on freshwater microbes mobilizing plastic-derived carbon into the environment
DESCRIPTION:Description: Plastic debris is becoming pervasive in aquatic environments\, posing risks to ecosystems and human health. Environmental bacteria and fungi have shown the ability to break down plastics\, influencing the transport and fate of plastic in the environment\; yet few such studies mimic realistic conditions\, limiting our understanding of the rates and mechanisms of these processes. While many studies have demonstrated plastics-degrading bacteria and fungi\, in nature these microbes do not exist in isolation. Additionally\, many studies examine the growth of microbes on plastic as their sole carbon source\; however\, this does not reflect environmental conditions where various carbon sources are present. Furthermore\, aquatic systems are dynamic with light\, temperatures\, and microbial communities varying by depth\, likely leading to depth-dependent microbial metabolisms and thus plastic fate. To more accurately characterize freshwater plastic degradation\, our team incubated plastics at varying lake depths and maintained the resulting complex microbial biofilms in the laboratory under similar physical and nutrient conditions. We measured how microbial communities under varied conditions mobilize plastic-derived carbon (PE-C) into the environment and assimilate it into their cells using gas chromatography isotopic ratio mass spectrometry (GC-IRMS) and nano secondary ion mass spectrometry (nanoSIMS) with 99% 13C high-density polyethylene film. We found that the rates and amounts of PE-C mobilized into the environment differs between the surface photic and deep aphotic zones. Adding natural non-plastic carbon sources boosted both the mobilization of PE-C into the environment (e.g.\, water and atmosphere) and cellular biomass. These findings suggest that depth is a key determinant for microbial plastic degradation and that naturally occurring non-plastic carbon sources may prime microbial degraders\, enhancing degradation potential in the environment. A better understanding of the microbial constraints on environmental plastic degradation is essential for modeling the fate of plastics and plastic-derived carbon\, identifying favorable biodegradation conditions\, and assessing potential ecosystem impacts.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Integrated Product Development: Online Product Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2025 IPD Online Product Launch runs from December 2 at 12 p.m. through December 5 at 12 p.m. During this time\, members of the public are invited to explore a virtual marketplace by visiting the IPD Voting Website. Each participant is given a hypothetical budget to allocate across products based on personal preferences. \nThe challenge concludes with an in-person Product Launch on December 8\, from 5:30–7:30 p.m.\, in the Ross School of Business Winter Garden. Guests will have the opportunity to interact directly with student teams\, experience the products in person\, and vote for their favorites. The evening will culminate with the announcement of the winning team.\n\nTHE CHALLENGE\nThis year’s theme\, “Material Matters\,” asks students to design products that weave sustainability into outdoor products and experiences. Student teams employ sustainably-oriented textiles in physical\, digital\, or hybrid “phygital” products that support engagement with the outdoors – from balconies to backyards to ballparks to beaches to bayous and beyond.\n\nTHE COURSE\nThe University of Michigan’s Integrated Product Design (IPD) program brings together interdisciplinary teams of students from business\, engineering\, information\, and design. Students collaborate in cross-functional teams to operate as independent companies competing in a specific product market.\n\nEach semester\, IPD focuses on a unique design challenge\, and asks teams to operate as independent firms competing in that market. The curriculum combines lectures with hands-on work\, guiding teams through critical stages such as customer discovery\, concept generation\, technical development\, production planning\, pricing\, and marketing.\nThe IPD Challenge is more than a classroom project. It’s a hands-on experience that pushes students to create solutions that could shape industries. By integrating business strategy with technical feasibility and user-centered design\, the competition mirrors the real-world product development process. Students don’t just build prototypes—they develop go-to-market strategies and refine their concepts based on real feedback.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | The Party's Interests Come First: The Life of Xi Zhongxun\, Father of Xi Jinping
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/bVjV6\n\n*The Party's Interests Come First* is the first biography of Xi Zhongxun written in English. This biography is at once a sweeping story of the Chinese revolution and the first several decades of the People's Republic of China and a deeply personal story about making sense of one's own identity within a larger political context. Drawing on an array of new documents\, interviews\, diaries\, and periodicals\, Joseph Torigian vividly tells the life story of Xi Zhongxun\, a man who spent his entire life struggling to balance his own feelings with the Party's demands.\n \nDr. Joseph Torigian is an associate professor at the School of International Service at American University in Washington\, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations\, and a center associate of the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. Previously\, he was a Visiting Fellow at the China in the World Program at Australian National University\, a Stanton Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations\, Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton-Harvard’s China and the World Program\, a Postdoctoral (and Predoctoral) Fellow at Stanford’s Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC)\, a Predoctoral Fellow at George Washington University’s Institute for Security and Conflict Studies\, an IREX scholar affiliated with the Higher School of Economics in Moscow\, and a Fulbright Scholar at Fudan University in Shanghai. His first book\, Prestige\, Manipulation\, and Coercion: Elite Power Struggles in the Soviet Union and China after Stalin and Mao was released with Yale University Press\, and The Party's Interests Come First: The Life of Xi Zhongxun\, Father of Xi Jinping was published by Stanford University Press in 2025.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:SRC Seminar Series Presents: Insights into cognitive aging around the world: evidence from the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAlthough nearly 75% of global Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD)cases will occur in low- and middle-income countries by 2050\, little ADRD research includes data from these regions. The Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) is a major innovation that provides\, for the first time\, harmonized data for cross-national comparisons of later-life cognitive functions that are sensitive to linguistic\, cultural\, and educational differences across countries. The HCAP was first developed by the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS) team in partnership with its global network and has now been implemented in over 20 countries around the world. However\, cognitive function does not lend itself to direct comparison across diverse populations without careful consideration of the best practices for such comparisons. This seminar will present the process of a culturally sensitive statistical methodology to harmonize HCAP data around the world\, theoretical and methodological considerations for high-quality comparative analyses of cognitive aging around the world\, and insights gained from such analyses to-date.\n\nBiography:\nLindsay Kobayashi is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Global Public Health at the U-M School of Public Health\, Faculty Associate in the Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research\, and Associate Director for Research Strategy at the U-M Center for Global Health Equity. Her research is on the social epidemiology of cognitive aging from a global perspective\, investigating how social and economic factors throughout the life course influence cognitive health in older adults around the world. She is a Co-Investigator of the Health and Retirement Study and the Co-Director of the HCAP Network.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Addressing Structural Racism in Heart Failure Care and Outcomes: A Mixed Methods Evaluation of the Social Structure of Care Delivery
DESCRIPTION:This is a Curtis Center Health Equity Seminar Series presentation in panel discussion format\, featuring Dr. Russell Funk\, Dr. Donald S. Likosky\, and Curtis Center Faculty Affiliate and former Director\, Dr. Daphne C. Watkins\, who will be presenting on behalf of all of the CARE-CONNECT Investigators. \n\nHeart failure (HF) affects over six million Americans and disproportionately impacts racial and ethnic minorities\, as well as women\, due to systemic disparities in care. These groups face higher risk factors\, limited access to specialists\, underutilization of evidence-based therapies\, and worse outcomes. Structural racism and discrimination (SRD) embedded in healthcare delivery are key drivers of these inequities.\n\n\nThis project examines how the social structure of care delivery\, provider networks and organizational relationships\, contributes to disparities. By analyzing network patterns\, identifying barriers and facilitators\, and engaging stakeholders\, the project aims to develop a best practices toolkit to strengthen care delivery networks and advance equitable HF care and outcomes. This work is supported by R01HL167816 from the National Heart\, Lung\, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.\n\nLearning Objectives\nThis seminar aims to provide attendees with the ability to:\n\nDescribe how SRD shapes disparities in heart failure care delivery and outcomes.\nDescribe how provider networks influence access\, coordination\, and quality of heart failure care.\nIntegrate qualitative and quantitative findings to design interventions addressing heart failure disparities.\nAgenda\n2:00 - 2:15pm | Introduction and Project’s Objectives and Scope\n\n2:15 - 2:30pm | Structural Racism and Discrimination (SRD) in HF Care\n\n2:30 - 2:45pm | The Role of Care Delivery Networks\n\n2:45 - 3:00pm | Applying Mixed Methods Insights to Equity Strategies

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Webinar: Bridging Water Quality Human Dimensions Research and Practice
DESCRIPTION:The municipalities within the Great Bay Watershed vary in size and their capacity to address watershed management and infrastructure issues related to water quality\, creating a need to strengthen connections across social science research and its applications to outreach\, education\, technical assistance\, and engagement. As local social science studies emerged that could inform new and existing community engagement\, outreach\, and education programs in the watershed\, practitioners – including training and education staff at Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and partners working on outreach\, engagement\, and education related to water quality – asked for help identifying\, interpreting\, and applying this research.\n\nTo help address this management need\, a science transfer project team worked to gather\, categorize\, and summarize available relevant human dimensions research and explore the findings through workshops and interactive peer learning sessions that brought together researchers and practitioners to discuss the practical implications of the research as well as build capacity to interpret existing and design new research. In this webinar\, the project team will provide an overview of the approach used to build stronger connections\, provide highlights of key takeaways on how to use findings and theoretical frameworks from social science research\, and discuss proposed next steps that were inspired by this transfer grant with the goal of learning from and facilitating connection across those working on related topics in other watersheds.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series | Homo juluensis: A Pan-Eastern Asian Middle Pleistocene Hominin
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/w9kqG.\n\nMiddle Pleistocene (~780\,000-~127\,000 years BP) fossils that cannot be easily assigned to Homo erectus\, H. neanderthalensis\, or H. sapiens have traditionally been lumped into a generic category like “archaic H. sapiens” (or H. heidelbergensis). How to classify these fossils has been the subject of intense debate over the past several decades\, a debate that is sometimes referred to simply as “The Muddle in the Middle.\" What is becoming increasingly clear is that multiple species of hominins were present across Eurasia and Africa during this time period. Here\, Bae will introduce Homo juluensis\, a new species of hominin that was present across eastern Asia that appeared as far north as southern Siberia\, as far south as Laos\, and even present in high altitudes (Qinghai-Tibet). In addition\, gaps in the paleoanthropological record (e.g.\, North Korea) will also be discussed as there is a good chance different types of hominins\, including H. juluensis\, were present in the region.\n \nChristopher J. Bae is a professor of anthropology at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Bae has spent the past three decades researching the paleoanthropological record of eastern Asia\, particularly Korea\, China\, and Japan. He takes a multidisciplinary approach to his research working closely with paleontologists\, archaeologists\, geochronologists\, and paleoclimatologists. Bae is the recipient of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents’ Research Excellence Award and his research was recently acknowledged as one of the top ten University of Hawaii at Manoa stories for 2024.\n\nArticle related to this talk: https://myumi.ch/n1gG3\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at ncks.info@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Ethan Xingyuan Fang\, Associate Professor\, Department of Biostatistics & Bioinformatics\, Duke University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We present a unified offline decision-making framework. In the first part\, we consider a class of assortment optimization problems in an offline data-driven setting. A firm does not know the underlying customer choice model but has access to an offline dataset consisting of the historically offered assortment set\, customer choice\, and revenue. The objective is to use the offline dataset to find an optimal assortment. Due to the combinatorial nature of assortment optimization\, the problem of insufficient data coverage is likely to occur in the offline dataset. Therefore\, designing a provably efficient offline learning algorithm becomes a significant challenge. To this end\, we propose an algorithm referred to as Pessimistic ASsortment opTimizAtion (PASTA) following the spirit of pessimism. We show that the algorithm identifies the optimal assortment by only requiring the offline data to cover the optimal assortment under general settings. In particular\, we establish a regret bound for the offline assortment optimization problem under the celebrated multinomial logit model and its generalizations\, where the regret is shown to be minimax optimal. We will also discuss other novel combinatorial uncertainty quantification problems of assortment optimization.

DESCRIPTION:For many\, the best-known photobook about the Jewish experience is Roman Vishniac’s \"A Vanished World\" (1983) – a melancholic document of Jewish life in Poland before the Holocaust. Yet countless photographers turned to the medium of the photobook after World War II to capture vibrant Jewish life as well as to document Jewish communities they felt were on the brink of extinction. In this interactive workshop\, participants will examine a range of photo books and discuss them on the level of form (image selection\, sequencing\, layout)\, content\, and materiality. As we consider the legacies of Vishniac’s paradigm of “vanishing Jews\,” we will also explore what alternative questions photobooks raise about picturing Jews in the 20th-century diaspora.\n\nSpace is limited\; please RSVP to secure your spot here: https://myumi.ch/z93My

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Analysis Seminar: PDE-constrained optimization for slip-driven microswimmers of arbitrary shape
DESCRIPTION:The squirmer model is used to model the swimming of microorganisms with hair-like structures known as cilia on their surface. The model uses a slip velocity defined on the swimmer surface to represent the collective motion of the cilia\, resulting in a Dirichlet boundary value problem for the Stokes equations. We use the Helmholtz decomposition to define the slip velocity in terms of tangential basis functions on a surface of arbitrary shape. The reciprocal theorem (Green’s second identity for the Stokes equations) can be used to determine the translational and rotational velocities of the swimmer from a prescribed slip velocity – closed-form expressions for these quantities can be obtained for a spheroidal squirmer. \n\nWe then explore an inverse problem – given an arbitrary swimmer shape of spherical topology\, which slip profile minimizes power loss? While the space of tangential slip velocity fields is infinite-dimensional\, this optimization problem can be reduced to six dimensions. The problem consists of two nested optimizations – a partial minimization in which the direction of net motion of the swimmer is prescribed\, followed by a global optimization procedure in which the best net motion direction is determined. We develop a solution algorithm for this optimization problem that involves only 12 auxiliary flow problems which can be solved numerically using boundary integral methods. The optimization results suggest that the competition between linear and rotational optimal motion is linked to symmetries in the swimmer shape.
