Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate.  This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Leveraging 3D Geometry for Place Recognition and Image Restoration in Visual and Thermal SLAM
DESCRIPTION:Committee Chair:  Katherine Skinner\n\nAbstract:\nSimultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is the task of progressively mapping a sensor platform's surroundings\, while also tracking its pose (position and orientation) within it. SLAM enables robot navigation in unseen\, unstructured\, and GPS-denied environments and supports virtual and augmented reality applications without requiring external sensors or fiducials. Due to the low cost\, weight\, and power consumption\, small size\, and high spatial resolution of visible spectrum cameras\, visual SLAM is especially well-studied. However\, visual SLAM is challenged by image degradation arising from poor illumination and visual obscurants such as rain\, fog\, snow\, dust\, and smoke. Thermal cameras offer an alternative that can operate in complete darkness and see through the aforementioned visual obscurants\, but only relatively low quality uncooled microbolometer thermal cameras are practical in most applications. Due to the physics of microbolometer image formation\, SLAM with these cameras must often contend with significant motion blur\, rolling shutter distortions\, and noise. Additionally\, all forms of SLAM are fundamentally susceptible to pose drift\, which is error accumulated by concatenating relative pose estimates. The problems of pose drift and image degradation can be mitigated with place recognition and image restoration. In recent years\, both tasks are commonly performed with end-to-end deep learning approaches that process only one image or a small set of images at a time. However\, these methods fail to exploit the full extent of information available in the context of SLAM and are limited in their ability to generalize to scenarios unrepresented in their training data.\n\nThis thesis introduces techniques for place recognition and image restoration that leverage 3D geometry that is either freely available as a byproduct of SLAM or can be jointly estimated. By utilizing estimated 3D geometry\, these methods implicitly exploit wide baseline multi-view information and\, if available\, data from multiple sensors. First\, an autonomous vehicle dataset is introduced featuring challenging conditions\, including adverse illumination and opposing viewpoints\, captured by stereo RGB\, monochrome\, event\, and thermal cameras. Next\, a place recognition algorithm for similar and opposing viewpoints is introduced that forms descriptors from point clouds estimated through stereo visual odometry. The approach is evaluated on the new dataset and achieves high performance in many conditions\, except poorly lit areas at night where the surrounding structure cannot be perceived. This highlights a potential use case for thermal SLAM. Then\, towards robust thermal SLAM\, an approach for thermal image restoration is proposed that incorporates the unique image formation model of microbolometer thermal cameras with Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs). Finally\, the rendering pipeline introduced for thermal image restoration is adapted to 3D Gaussian Splatting and integrated into a thermal-inertial SLAM system uniquely capable of operating under severe thermal image degradation. Overall\, the methods proposed in this thesis demonstrate the potential of leveraging 3D geometry in all components of a SLAM system and contribute to making SLAM reliable in challenging conditions and large-scale environments.\n\nZoom passcode: slam

DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: December 3-13Opening Reception: Friday\, December 5\, 6-8 p.m.\nPath Forward\, the 2025 Stamps BA Senior Studio Exhibition\, weaves meditations on nature\, the inner and outer workings of our human bodies from the functional to the phenomenal\, the paces of daily lives whether reading or rushing\, in friendship or in family and exploring memories of real and imagined pasts as they intersect with the here and now. Featuring work in experimental video\, fashion\, painting\, illustration and sculpture\, Path Forward postulates stepping stones for near and possible futures.\nThe Bachelor of Arts (BA) Senior Studio (ARTDES 401) is offered for Stamps BA students in their final year of study. The BA Senior Studio Exhibition offers these students the opportunity to build on the particular characteristics of the BA degree\, and focus on creating and exhibiting a culminating\, self-directed project. Students work independently or collaboratively to define a project plan with goals\, benchmarks\, and a timeline. \nThe BA Senior Studio Exhibition is a new tradition for Stamps. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)\nPhase 1 Curatorial Statement\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Amelia Burns (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Erin McKenna (courtyard pillar)\nArtists Amelia Burns and Erin McKenna reimagine the Division Street pillars through digital collages rooted in memory\, landscape and shared environments. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. With a feminist lens\, she explores the space where necessity meets excess\, highlighting the subversive potential of both. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. DESCRIPTION:The gravothermal core collapse of self-interacting dark matter halos provides a compelling mechanism for seeding supermassive black holes in the early Universe. In this scenario\, a small fraction of a halo\, approximately 1% of its mass\, collapses into a dense core\, which could further evolve into a black hole. In addition\, I describe how the relativistic onset of dynamical instability can be diagnosed by exploiting Chandrasekhar’s criterion in both classical and quantum gases. Finally\, I highlight the crucial role of space dimensionality and cosmological constant regarding the general-relativistic instability.

The evening will culminate with the announcement of the winning team.\n\nTHE CHALLENGE\nThis year’s theme\, “Material Matters\,” asks students to design products that weave sustainability into outdoor products and experiences. Student teams employ sustainably-oriented textiles in physical\, digital\, or hybrid “phygital” products that support engagement with the outdoors – from balconies to backyards to ballparks to beaches to bayous and beyond.\n\nTHE COURSE\nThe University of Michigan’s Integrated Product Design (IPD) program brings together interdisciplinary teams of students from business\, engineering\, information\, and design. Students collaborate in cross-functional teams to operate as independent companies competing in a specific product market.\n\nEach semester\, IPD focuses on a unique design challenge\, and asks teams to operate as independent firms competing in that market. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | What do Fusion Technology\, Physical Vapor Deposition and EUV Lithography Have in Common?
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nSo what do fusion technology\, physical vapor deposition and EUV lithography have in common? The answer is\, “plasma-material interactions” (PMI) and in particular\, sputtering. The key to a fusion energy device delivering energy is getting out the heat without destroying the walls. Afterall you are putting the sun in a metal can and should expect a similar heat flux! How that plasma interacts with the surfaces is paramount. We developed a way to use flowing molten lithium as the plasma facing component. To create thin films for microelectronics\, magnetron sputtering is the most common form of physical vapor deposition. We developed a new system for magnetron sputtering which reverses the potential on the target allowing detailed control of the ion energy reaching the material to be coated. Finally\, in EUV lithography the primary factor limiting the power is “tin management”. To make 13.5 nm EUV light\, 30-μm-diameter molten Sn droplets are hit by a laser at up to 80\,000 times per second. The Sn vaporizes and becomes a dense warm plasma which emits EUV light. The tin ends up everywhere including on the Bragg-reflector mirrors. Removing the tin without damaging the mirrors is a delicate balance of PMI. We developed surface-wave-plasma sources which produce hydrogen radicals and a locally higher ion density which turns the Sn to SnH4 which is pumped away. This talk will hit the highlights in each of these areas and show how they are all being used in industry.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDavid Neil Ruzic is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Nuclear\, Plasma and Radiological Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a Fellow in four societies and has been awarded the Gaede-Langmuir award from AVS (2020) and the Fusion Technology Prize from IEEE (2020)\, the University of Michigan Plasma Prize (2024) and the International Award in Technology from IVSTA (2025). Even though “retired” his current group consists of 1 postdoc\, 16 graduate and 25 undergraduate research assistants. He founded and is the Director of the Center for Plasma-Material Interactions and the Illinois Plasma Institute. His research covers the fusion technology\, plasma deposition\, plasma etching\, EUV lithography and atmospheric-pressure plasma processing.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person\, with livestream in Zoom. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | Holding the Universe up to a Mirror: The Importance of Analytic Covariance Matrices
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, there has been much interest in the use of higher-order spatial clustering statistics\, such as N-Point Correlation Functions (NPCFs)\, to extract cosmological information from the large-scale distribution of galaxies. An NPCF characterizes the excess over random in the spatial clustering of sets of N galaxies at a time. When performing an analysis with NPCFs\, one must obtain the inverse covariance matrix to constrain the measurements made. The covariance matrix is typically computed purely from mock galaxy catalogs\; however\, for analyses with a large number of degrees of freedom\, one cannot directly estimate an invertible covariance matrix this way. To better understand the structure of the covariance matrix and pave the way for estimation of it in future analyses\, we seek a fully analytic covariance matrix template. I will present a closed-form solution for the covariance matrix of the 2PCF\, as well as closed-form solutions for the fundamental building blocks of the covariance matrices of the 3PCF\, 4PCF\, and beyond. I will then demonstrate how these analytic results may be applied to studies of parity violation in large-scale structure\, where there is growing concern that recent detections of parity violation are artifacts of misestimating the covariance matrix. As a robust detection of parity violation will significantly influence the direction of research into the inflationary epoch\, it is crucial to ensure that accurate covariance matrices are used in such analyses.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Labor and Product Market Power\, Endogenous Quality\, and the Consolidation of the US Hospital Industry
DESCRIPTION:Existing structural analyses of the harmful effects of market consolidation focus on either product or labor markets in isolation\, ignoring that product market competitors often compete for workers as well. This paper develops a unified framework for merger evaluation\, finding that firms’ simultaneous exercise of oligopoly power in the product market and oligopsony power in the labor market amplifies the harm from mergers to both consumers and workers. The model also demonstrates how merger-induced gains in labor market power incentivize firms to reduce product quality\, highlighting an additional channel for consumer harm. The model’s predictions are tested and quantified in the context of the recent consolidation of the US hospital industry. Linking panel data from several sources on all US hospitals from 1996- 2022\, a difference-in-differences design is estimated for nearly 150 high-concentration within market mergers. Hospital mergers significantly reduce patient volume\, increase prices\, reduce employment\, lower wages\, and deteriorate quality of care\, resulting in higher patient mortality. After recovering the structural parameters\, the estimated model replicates observed merger impacts. Counterfactual exercises reveal that ignoring increased labor (product) concentration would lead one to under-predict the harm of mergers to consumers (workers).

DESCRIPTION:Many materials we eat\, spread\, squeeze\, or 3D print are gels\, soft amorphous solids whose solid component comprises self-assembled networks of particles\, fibers\, or agglomerates of proteins\, polymers\, and colloids. The space between and within human cells is permeated by self-assembled gel networks\, the extra-cellular matrix and the cytoskeleton\, whose self- organization and heterogeneity is central to biological functions. Self-assembled gels have adaptive\, tunable\, and nonlinear rheology determined by a complex interplay between the molecular cohesion and surface interactions\, the aggregation kinetics that drive formation of various types of structures\, and the effect of external forces that can promote breaking or reforming of the load-bearing backbone. Solidification processes are typically sources of frozen-in stresses and help build a memory of the processing history in these amorphous solids. Disorder and self-organization determine stress localization under load and the feedback between stress heterogeneities\, structural disorder\, and nonequilibrium conditions is therefore key to the mechanical response of these fascinating and ubiquitous materials.

I will explain this conjecture\, what we can prove about it\, and its relation with the moduli space of curves and Gromov-Witten theory. DESCRIPTION:Thirty years after the signing in Dayton\, Ohio\, of the peace agreement ending the war in Bosnia\, both Bosnia and its neighbors face immense challenges to respect for human rights and the rule of law. In this panel\, experts from the region specializing will discuss the successes\, failures\, and future prospects for the region. The panel will be preceded by the showing of The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent\, a film based on events during the Bosnia conflict and winner of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival Palme D'Or for Best Short Film.\n   \n   Moderator:\n   \n   Steven Ratner\n   Bruno Simma Collegiate Professor of Law\n   Director\, University of Michigan Donia Human Rights Center\n   \n   Steven R. Ratner is the Bruno Simma Collegiate Professor of Law at the University of Michigan. He teaches and writes in the field of public international law on a range of issues\, including war and peace\, human rights\, foreign investment\, the United Nations (UN)\, territorial and ethnic-based disputes\, and business and human rights. Belgrade\, LL.M. Connecticut\, PhD Union Belgrade) is a Professor of International Law and International Human Rights Law at Union University Belgrade Law School and an International and Comparative Law Research Scholar at the University of Michigan Law School. She is also a Visiting Fellow at the University of Reading School of Law (UK) and at the Center for Law and Pluralism\, University Milano-Bicocca (Italy). Before joining Union University\, Tatjana was head of the legal department at the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights.\n   \n   Her research focuses on international responsibility\, human rights\, and the interaction between international law and domestic politics. She has published in leading journals\, including American Journal of International Law\, International and Comparative Law Quarterly\, and Cornell International Law Journal.\n   \n   She has taught as a Visiting Professor at the University of Münster Faculty of Law and at Washington and Lee University School of Law\, and was a Senior Grotius Research Scholar at the University of Michigan Law School. She has also consulted for international organizations such as UNDP\, Council of Europe\, OSCE\, and the EU Fundamental Rights Agency.\n   \n   Valery Perry\, Ph.D.\n   Senior Associate\, Democratization Policy Council\n   \n   Valery Perry has worked in the Western Balkans since the late 1990s\, conducting research and working for organizations including the Democratization Policy Council (DPC)\, the European Center for Minority Issues (ECMI)\, the Public International Law and Policy Group (PILPG)\, the NATO Stabilization Force (SFOR)\, and several NGOs. She has worked at both the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the OSCE Mission to Serbia. At a broader regional and global level\, she has consulted for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime\, the UN Development Program\, IMPAQ International\, Interpeace\, and other organizations\, with a focus on evaluation and impact assessment\, and research on issues related to corruption\, extremism and governance. She taught courses in conflict analysis and resolution at the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology. She attended public schools\, and went on to receive a BA from the University of Rochester\, an MA from Indiana University’s Russian and East European Institute\, and a PhD from George Mason University’s Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution.\n   \n   Valery has published numerous articles and book chapters\, has spoken at conferences and policy events in the United States and throughout Europe\, and has testified at the U.S. Congress. She has edited three books\, including Statebuilding and Democratization in Bosnia and Herzegovina (with Soeren Keil) and Extremism and Violent Extremism in Serbia: 21-st Century Manifestations of an Historical Challenge. Using Monge–Kantorovich duality and backward stochastic partial differential equations (BSPDEs)\, we characterize equilibrium prices and trading strategies through Kantorovich potentials and transport maps\, providing a unified framework that encompasses nearly all known continuous-time Kyle–Back models\, including those with dynamic information and activist trading. Our second project develops a variational formulation of the Kyle model that accommodates stochastic and multidimensional liquidity. The equilibrium is reinterpreted as an optimal liquidation of information\, where the insider’s control variable is the rate of information release rather than inventory. This formulation links market microstructure to optimal execution and clarifies the dual role of the adjoint process identified by Collin-Dufresne and Fos (2016) as the co-state variable in the stochastic maximum principle.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we discuss geometric group theoretic approaches to classifying invariant Radon measures on various dynamical systems arising from Teichmüller dynamics and homogeneous dynamics.\n\nFirst\, given a non-elementary subgroup of the mapping class group of a hyperbolic surface\, we construct an invariant Radon measure on the space of measured laminations and prove that any ergodic invariant Radon measure on the recurrent measured laminations coincides with this measure. As a special case\, we deduce that for a convex cocompact subgroup\, any ergodic invariant Radon measure is either the unique one supported on the recurrent measured laminations\, or a counting measure on the orbit of a non-recurrent measured lamination. When the subgroup is the full mapping class group\, this measure is the Thurston measure\, and in this case the uniqueness on recurrent measured laminations was independently proved by Lindenstrauss--Mirzakhani and Hamenstädt.\n\nNext\, we classify all horospherical-invariant Radon measures on higher-rank Anosov and relatively Anosov homogeneous spaces. These results are joint work with Inhyeok Choi.

Bae\, Ph.D. : Search For My Origins\n   \"As an adoptee from Korea I share a similar “discovery” story as many other adoptees\, where I was found with no records\, brought to an orphanage\, and then adopted by a white American family through one of the large international adoption agencies. Growing up in New York in a white family and neighborhood\, I became interested in my Korean roots a little bit from an early age but especially when I got to college and made my first Korean friends and ate my first Korean food. This experience from my undergraduate days led me to go to Korea on an exchange program to learn Korean language and culture firsthand. I eventually earned degrees in anthropology\, with a focus on paleoanthropology (human evolutionary studies)\, particularly in East Asia. I think in part because of my search for my own origins\, I was drawn to paleoanthropology where I study human origins on a broader scale. Here I talk a bit about my story\, while raising questions that every adoptee faces at some point in their lives.\"\n   \n   About Dr. Christopher Bae:\n   Christopher J. Bae is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Bae specializes in paleoanthropology (human evolutionary studies)\, with a particular focus in looking at human origins. Since emerging from New York City’s East Village in 1986\, they have led a global revival of klezmer\, combining centuries-old Yiddish tradition with radical contemporary sensibilities.\n\nFor nearly four decades\, The Klezmatics have brought their unique sound to audiences around the world—blending klezmer with jazz\, gospel\, punk\, classical\, Latin\, and Balkan styles. Their music is rooted in Eastern European Jewish tradition but embraces a progressive worldview\, tackling themes like human rights\, antifundamentalism\, diaspora\, and cultural resistance.\n\nTheir impact is unmistakable. The Klezmatics are the only klezmer band to win a Grammy Award (Best Contemporary World Music Album for Wonder Wheel: Lyrics by Woody Guthrie). They have released 13 acclaimed albums\, topped the Billboard World Music Chart\, and received multiple international honors\, including the German Critics Award and the New York Jewish Music Award.
