Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate.  This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present.  Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change.  Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints.  \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

Room PML2000\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92778807694?jst=2\n\nAbstract:\nQuantum thermal-state and ground-state preparation are one of the fundamental algorithmic primitives with broad applications in quantum many-body physics\, quantum chemistry\, and materials science. In this talk\, I will introduce dissipative quantum algorithms for preparing the thermal or ground state of a given physical or chemical Hamiltonian. I will begin with an overview of a popular approach that has gained significant traction in recent years\, based on Lindblad dynamics. I will then present a more recent but implementation friendly framework for thermal and ground-state preparation rooted in system–bath interaction models. I will discuss a recently developed algorithm that comes with rigorous complexity guarantees\, along with new results that extend our theoretical understanding of system–bath interaction beyond what was previously known.\n\nBio:\nZhiyan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. Before joining Michigan\, Zhiyan was a Morrey Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California\, Berkeley\, hosted by Prof. Lin Lin. Zhiyan received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison under the direction of Qin Li.\n\nZhiyan works in applied and computational mathematics\, with a particular focus on numerical analysis in areas such as quantum computing\, machine learning\, and data science. A central theme of his research is developing a deep mathematical understanding of existing algorithms and designing new\, principled ones. DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. DESCRIPTION:Graduate student Adam Lenhart performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

No longer tethered to the “thick bonds” of workplace\, village\, and home\, Japanese are losing forms of connectedness (en) that once ensured social reproduction as well. In these post-growth times\, alongside a high-aging population and declining marital and childbirth rates\, singlehood is on the rise as are aging seniors “without anyone to depend upon” (*miyori ga nai*). In the face of spiraling all-aloneness\, there is deep-seated distress over the state of “Japanese sociality” in an era “lacking family” (*naki jidai*). But emerging as well is an avalanche of new designs and relational proxies\, stand-ins or replacements for what once constituted human bonds: virtual characters\, techno-companions\, rental spouses\, care robots\, and pets. The talk essay considers such relational stand-ins not for the living but for the dead. Targeting social singles at risk of dying lonely deaths and remaining dislocated souls (*muenbotoke*) after that\, a wealth of new products\, services\, and apparati promises “relationality” post-death. What kind of sociality is envisioned here\; is it modeled upon or transgressive of the familial form\, and (how) do these new notions of self/other-hood portend a future for Japan/ese?\n   \n   Anne Allison is a professor of cultural anthropology at Duke University. Her research on contemporary issues in Japan spans nightlife\, popular culture\, Pokémon\, sexuality\, gender\, precarity\, and death. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Great Lakes Seminar Series: Matthew Hoffman
DESCRIPTION:About the presentation: Understanding the transport and fate of plastic pollution is crucial for modeling the exposure risk for different ecosystems and organisms. I will discuss efforts to model the transport of plastic pollution in the Great Lakes using NOAA’s operational hydrodynamics models and custom built transport code to simulate changing particle properties. The models allow for advection\, turbulent mixing in the vertical\, density driven sinking\, beaching\, deposition\, and biofouling of particles. The transport model relies on accurant hydrodynamic fields\, so I will also describe initial efforts to perform data assimilation on the NOAA model output using a Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (LETKF) approach on the FVCOM model of Lake Erie. We test the LETKF using simulated observations of surface temperature and vertical profiles of temperature.\n\nAbout the speaker: Matthew J. Hoffman is a Professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Dr. Hoffman received the B.A. degree in Mathematics and Astrophysics from Williams College\, Williamstown\, MA\, USA and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation from the University of Maryland\, College Park\, MD\, USA. He was a post-doctoral fellow in the Earth and Planetary Science Department at Johns Hopkins University\, Baltimore\, MD\, USA \, where he worked on data assimilation for the Chesapeake Bay. Since moving to RIT\, he has shifted his focus to the Great Lakes\, including some work on data assimilation on the NOAA forecast model for Lake Erie. Over the past decade\, his work has focused on modeling the input\, transport\, and fate of plastic pollution in fresh water\, including the Great Lakes.

DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2025 IPD Online Product Launch runs from December 2 at 12 p.m. through December 5 at 12 p.m. During this time\, members of the public are invited to explore a virtual marketplace by visiting the IPD Voting Website. Each participant is given a hypothetical budget to allocate across products based on personal preferences. \nThe challenge concludes with an in-person Product Launch on December 8\, from 5:30–7:30 p.m.\, in the Ross School of Business Winter Garden. Guests will have the opportunity to interact directly with student teams\, experience the products in person\, and vote for their favorites. The evening will culminate with the announcement of the winning team.\n\nTHE CHALLENGE\nThis year’s theme\, “Material Matters\,” asks students to design products that weave sustainability into outdoor products and experiences. Student teams employ sustainably-oriented textiles in physical\, digital\, or hybrid “phygital” products that support engagement with the outdoors – from balconies to backyards to ballparks to beaches to bayous and beyond.\n\nTHE COURSE\nThe University of Michigan’s Integrated Product Design (IPD) program brings together interdisciplinary teams of students from business\, engineering\, information\, and design. Students collaborate in cross-functional teams to operate as independent companies competing in a specific product market.\n\nEach semester\, IPD focuses on a unique design challenge\, and asks teams to operate as independent firms competing in that market. The curriculum combines lectures with hands-on work\, guiding teams through critical stages such as customer discovery\, concept generation\, technical development\, production planning\, pricing\, and marketing.\nThe IPD Challenge is more than a classroom project. It’s a hands-on experience that pushes students to create solutions that could shape industries. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

DESCRIPTION:A reception with light refreshments will be held in the B10 lobby before each seminar from 1-1:30 p.m.\n\nAbstract: Machine learning in transition metal catalysis is more challenging than other areas of chemistry due to the combination of diversity of chemical bonding and limitations in high quality data sets\, experimental or computational. I will describe our efforts to overcome these limitations to accelerate the discovery of novel transition metal containing materials using machine learning. I will discuss how we have leveraged experimental data sets through both text mining and semantic embedding to uncover relationships between structure and function\, disseminating high quality datasets of transition metal complexes with known function. I will describe how we've used these data sets to build machine learning models that predict the structure of transition metal complexes. Then I will describe how we have leveraged large datasets of synthesized materials to uncover those with novel function in polymer networks. I will demonstrate the success of our design strategy through macroscopically visible changes in network scale properties of polymers once our transition metal complexes are incorporated. Finally\, I will conclude with some outstanding challenges for the field.

Dr. McDonald will discuss how active inference—a computational framework for understanding human cognition and behavior—can model\, predict\, and interpret human decision-making in complex environments. DESCRIPTION:Developing a novel in-silico tool for heterochiral macrocycle design\nAbstract:\nAntibodies and small molecules have been powerful tools in targeting disease-related proteins. However\, there remain many challenging targets—such as flat or featureless intracellular surfaces—that are often inaccessible to these modalities. This is where peptides come in. Peptides are particularly exciting because they can be synthesized via solid-phase methods\, penetrate cells\, and bind to flat protein interfaces that are otherwise undruggable. Despite this promise\, designing effective peptides has remained a significant challenge. In our lab\, we’re developing new computational and experimental tools to overcome these limitations. Today\, I’ll be talking about CyclicCEA and CyclicMPNN\, two current methods for rapid generation of Gly or Ala cycles. If time permits\, I will also talk about their use as a binder design.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nUnderstanding and advancing the carbon-energy-water nexus is critical for a sustainable energy future and solving many related environmental issues we face today. Due to the rapid decrease in the cost of renewable energy\, it is now practical to design new electrified carbon conversion systems that use renewable electrons to drive the molecular transformation of CO2 and other waste feedstock (wastewater\, food waste\, biomass) into high-value fuels and chemicals while also recovering important resources such as water\, nutrients\, and energy. These new green technologies can help displace fossil fuels in various sectors and redirect resource flows within a new circular carbon economy. This presentation will discuss opportunities to leverage cutting-edge electrochemical and biohybrid technologies in environmental and chemical applications\, including water and CO2 electrolysis\, sustainable chemical manufacturing\, bioproduct and biofuel synthesis\, and food waste valorization. Lab-scale experiments have demonstrated competitive production rates\, titer\, and energy efficiencies. Efforts towards improving reactor scalability\, expanding the portfolio of products\, and integrating new types of waste streams are ongoing.\n\nBiography:\nJoshua Jack is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His research focuses on developing electrified approaches to molecular synthesis and resource recovery. Specifically\, his lab focuses on using renewable electricity to convert abundant small molecules and waste feedstocks into valuable chemicals and materials that can address emerging challenges in energy storage\, environmental remediation\, and circular manufacturing. Joshua previously served as a postdoctoral research scholar in the Andlinger Center for Energy and Environment at Princeton University and holds a doctoral degree from the University of Colorado\, Boulder. During his graduate studies\, Joshua obtained extensive interdisciplinary research experience at both the DOE- National Renewable Energy Laboratory and NASA Langley Research Center. DESCRIPTION:\"JWST Reveals the Atmospheres of Sub-Neptune Exoplanets\"\n\nSub-Neptunes are planets smaller than Neptune with thick\, gaseous atmospheres. They are the most common type of planet in our galaxy\, despite not having a solar system analog.  Prior to the JWST mission\, the study of sub-Neptune atmospheres was typically thwarted by low signal-to-noise measurements due to the small size of these planets\, and pervasive cloud layers that prevented detailed measurement of atmospheric properties.  JWST\, with its large aperture and broad IR wavelength coverage\, promised to finally open the door to the characterization of planets smaller than Neptune\, and it has delivered.  I will present some of the first JWST observations of sub-Neptune exoplanets along with the interpretation of those intriguing measurements.  We have begun to address key questions about the nature of sub-Neptune aerosols (clouds or haze) and the chemical composition of their atmospheres\, yet many outstanding questions remain.  I will outline future prospects for the study of sub-Neptunes with JWST and what we still hope to learn about their formation and evolution\, and the physical and chemical processes that govern their atmospheres.  I will conclude with some thoughts on how we can leverage population-level studies of sub-Neptune atmospheres with JWST to address these important topics.

DESCRIPTION:A (complex) hyperplane arrangement is a finite collection of hyperplanes in C^n. Since these hyperplanes are complex codimension 1 (and thus real codimension 2)\, the complement in C^n of the union of the hyperplanes is a connected manifold. It is a broad\, longstanding problem with many connections to different areas of mathematics to determine the arrangements for which this space is aspherical (has contractible universal cover). A subset of this problem\, commonly attributed to Arnol’d\, Brieskorn\, Thom\, and Pham\, concerns arrangements arising from reflection groups in R^n. For these arrangements\, one approach is to study a certain cell complex which is homotopy equivalent to the complement and carries a natural (singular) metric\, which is conjectured by Charney and Davis to be non-positively curved. This approach is deceivingly hard and has seen very little progress since it was proposed in 1995. I will discuss joint work with Amy Herron showing that this complex is indeed non-positively curved for a class of reflection arrangements\, and more generally\, 3-dimensional cell complexes which satisfy a strictly combinatorial condition.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FAST Lecture | Tiny\, Shiny\, and Clear: Capturing Impossible Artifacts in 3D
DESCRIPTION:This talk presents an update on 3D modeling at the Kelsey Museum. Many of the Kelsey’s artifacts are difficult to capture in 3D. Much of the collection is small\, from figurines and amulets all the way down to poppy seeds\, and many objects are shiny. Both characteristics present significant challenges to the methods archaeologists have traditionally used to create digital models\, which rely on cameras and reflected light. Even worse are glass objects and gemstones\, whose translucency defies these light-based methods. \n\nYet they are not impossible. This talk will introduce the advanced techniques we have adopted to deal with tiny and shiny artifacts\, the novel methods we are developing for capturing glass\, and the frameworks we have developed for archiving the massive amounts of data required by these techniques. It will also demonstrate the Kelsey’s multipronged\, innovative uses of digital modeling to communicate with the public\, such as publishing models online and bringing them into the galleries through digital animation\, 3D printing\, and augmented reality experiences.\n\nDr. Chris Motz is a Roman archaeologist and a specialist in digital technologies and methods. He received his PhD from the University of Cincinnati in 2021\, followed by stints teaching at Elon University and the University of Richmond\, before joining the Kelsey Museum in 2024. With regard to the ancient world\, most of his research centers on Roman industry and infrastructure and is rooted in analyses of complex datasets. This connects to his other primary focus: developing new and better ways to record\, analyze\, publish\, and preserve cultural heritage data\, with several published articles and chapters on digital field recording and excavation databases. In the field\, he serves as head of data for projects at the coastal Punic/Roman city of Tharros\, Sardinia\, and at Pompeii’s Porta Stabia neighborhood. At the Kelsey\, he oversees a wide range of digital efforts\, including the 3D capture project that is the subject of today’s talk.\n\nFAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) Lectures are free and open to the public.
