SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brothers and Uncles\, Kings and Typecutters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Perspectives on Contemporary Korea 2025 | One Year after the Martial Law Declaration: Democratic Backsliding and Resilience in Korea and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Participate in person or register to join online here: https://myumi.ch/2rpdJ\n\nThis conference marks the first anniversary of the unprecedented political upheaval triggered by President Yoon Seok Yeol’s declaration of martial law in South Korea. The event aims to critically reflect on the political and institutional causes and consequences of this crisis\, both within Korea and in a broader comparative perspective. In the wake of this extraordinary challenge to democratic norms around the world\, what have we learned about the vulnerabilities and the strength of democratic institutions from the experience of South Korea?\n \n By situating Korea within the global wave of democratic backsliding and bringing together scholars working on democratic backsliding from diverse cases and perspectives\, this workshop aims to generate new insights into institutional guardrails\, civic mobilization\, elite behavior\, and international influence. It will also examine how Korea’s political trajectory over the past year informs debates about the durability of democracy in both established and emerging democratic regimes.\n \n Please see this webpage for more detailed information: https://myumi.ch/P3NzP\n\n*Co-sponsored by: Nam Center for Korean Studies\, Initiative for Democracy & Civic Empowerment\, Political Science\, Center for Emerging Democracies*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at ncks.info@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Identification and Estimation of Discrete Choice Demand Models when Observed and Unobserved Characteristics are Correlated
DESCRIPTION:The standard Berry\, Levinsohn\, and Pakes (1995) (BLP) approach to estimation of demand and supply parameters assumes that the product characteristic observed by consumers and producers but not the researcher is conditionally mean independent of observed characteristics. We extend BLP to allow all product characteristics to be endogenous\, so the unobserved characteristic can be correlated with the observed char- acteristics. We derive moment conditions based on the assumption that firms choose product characteristics to maximize expected profits given their beliefs at that time about market conditions and that the “mistake” in the amount of the characteristic that is revealed once all products are on the market is conditionally mean independent of the firm’s information set. Using the original BLP dataset we find that observed and unobserved product characteristics are highly positively correlated\, biasing demand elasticities upward\, as average estimated price elasticities double in absolute value and average markups fall by 50%.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Graduating Student Speaker: Shihao Wu\, PhD Candidate\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Data that represent relations and interactions are ubiquitous in science\, engineering\, business\, and medicine. Traditional analytical methods for such data primarily focus on pairwise relations\; however\, real-world interactions often involve more than two entities and are inherently multi-way. In current practice\, these multi-way interactions are typically projected into pairwise relations before analysis\, which causes substantial information loss. Directly studying hypergraphs\, which naturally encode general multi-way interactions\, allows for more effective extraction of information from such relational data. In this talk\, I will discuss our development of generative models for hypergraphs. The first part introduces a general latent embedding framework that overcomes key limitations of existing hypergraph modeling methods. We establish identifiability of the latent embedding space and develop a likelihood-based estimator for the latent embeddings. We further derive consistency guarantees and asymptotic distributions for the parameter estimates\, enabling efficient inference from an observed hypergraph. Building on these results\, the second part of the talk introduces Denoising Diffused Embeddings (DDE)\, a generative architecture for hypergraphs that produces new hyperlinks not seen in the observed data. DDE connects discrete hyperlinks to a continuous latent space through a conditional hyperlink likelihood model\, and then reconstructs that space using a denoising diffusion process. Compared with existing generative models\, DDE is computationally efficient to train and sample from\, and it offers interpretability from the likelihood perspective. Our theoretical and empirical studies demonstrate its advantages as a general generative modeling framework. Together\, these results address core challenges in modeling multi-way interactions in relational data and illustrate how rigorous statistical modeling can contribute to building more efficient and trustworthy generative AI.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Risk Protection Value of Moral Hazard
DESCRIPTION:Health insurance lowers the out-of-pocket price of healthcare\, and it is well-established that this leads to higher utilization of care. This type of “moral hazard” is typically viewed as a social cost of insurance. Within a standard model\, we show that there are two important ways in which the consumer’s ability to change her behavior in response to insurance can play a central role in the ability of insurance to protect her from risk. These are (i) by allowing optimal exploitation of real income gained in bad states\, and (ii) by enabling more resources to be shifted from good states to bad states than otherwise could be. We provide a theoretical characterization of these cases and quantify their importance empirically. Under standard parameterizations of demand for healthcare and health insurance\, estimates in the literature imply that moral hazard accounts for as much as half of the total value of risk protection derived from insurance. Preventing consumers from changing their behavior in response to insurance would lower healthcare spending\, but also result in a major loss of risk protection\, on-net reducing social and consumer welfare in the population we study. Our results suggest that under-utilization of healthcare may thus be an equally important threat to welfare as over-utilization.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 1): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:Phase 1 Opening Reception: September 18\, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they've curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA '23) and Erin McKenna (MFA '20)Phase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA '20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA '20)Phase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA '21)\nPhase 1 Curatorial Statement\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Amelia Burns (entry pillar)Curated by CYNK Studios: Erin McKenna (courtyard pillar)\nArtists Amelia Burns and Erin McKenna reimagine the Division Street pillars through digital collages rooted in memory\, landscape and shared environments. Burns arranges fragments of her own photographs into airy compositions where these pictorial remnants become enshrined by the artist’s vision of the sacred. McKenna draws from the language of quilting\, organizing her photos of mushrooms\, moss and lichen into vibrant geometric patterns which echo Ohio textile traditions. Both artists\, Midwestern women attentive to the nuances of place\, weave personal imagery into collective meaning. Together\, their works create spaces of reverence and connection.\nAmelia Burns: GODSPROMISESRISINGHIGHGODSPROMISESRISINGHIGH contains fragments of photographs I have made over years in various locations in the United States. Each fragment holds personal meaning for me. The exalted pieces of environments float together and create a visual smorgasbord of symbols\, denoting a capitalist world\, filled with tender moments and connections\, where all objects are made holy.\nErin McKenna: Mushroom TrailMushroom Trail reimagines the Ohio Star quilt block through a collage of photographs of mushrooms\, lichen\, and moss gathered during walks in my Appalachian forest home. I created small blocks of repeating patterns to build texture and color. Inspired by the Barn Quilt Trail\, the work honors Ohio’s yard art traditions. Like other local expressions\, from chainsaw-carved bears to the front porch goose\, it fosters a shared sense of pride of place\, and community.\nArtist Statements/Bios\nAmelia BurnsThrough my travels across nearly every U.S. state\, I document not only the natural world but also its entanglement with human influence. My work speaks to the loneliness\, humor\, beauty\, pain\, and joy that coexist within these spaces. The landscapes I create—whether photographic or collage-based—are imbued with a visceral connection to the physical environments I’ve passed through. They are a reprocessing of the cultural detritus that surrounds me\, transforming fragments into vignettes that explore both the darkness and resilience of humanity.\nAt its core\, my work explores the underworld of human experience\, grappling with the visceral tension between authenticity and artifice in contemporary Americana. It reflects the disgusting horror of capitalism\, the mysticism of my Irish Catholic upbringing\, and the profound solitude that fuels my process. The resulting images are landscapes of seeking\, filled with the pain\, glory\, and quiet resistance of life.\nAmelia Burns is a photographer\, collage artist\, curator and educator exploring the cultural and physical landscapes of the U.S.\, capturing the nuances of shared environments. She earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2005 and later completed her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2023. Website / Instagram\nErin McKenna Erin McKenna is an interdisciplinary artist with a background in sculpture. Her practice embraces humor\, playful misuse\, and celebration as strategies to dismantle stereotypes and complicate binaries of construction and embellishment. With a feminist lens\, she explores the space where necessity meets excess\, highlighting the subversive potential of both. Her sculptures often pair gritty building materials with tactile fabrics\, generating tension between utility and ornament. Growing up in a perpetually unfinished home—a place of sawdust\, chop saws\, and improvisation—instilled in her a respect for visible labor\, inventive problem-solving\, and imperfection. Her process follows personal rules:\nno hierarchy of materialssubvert expected usecomplicate binaries\, stereotypes and associationsmisuse\, misapplyallow for variable arrangementsrepeat\, reiterate\, reuseconsider the subversive possibilities of the excessive\, fantastic\, and necessaryalways let the labor be visible\nMcKenna earned her BFA from Columbus College of Art &amp\; Design in 2012 and later completed her MFA at Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan. She recently moved back to the forest she calls home in Southeastern Ohio\, where she serves as Exhibitions Director at The Dairy Barn Arts Center\, hunts for mushrooms with her toddler\, and makes quilts. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Long-term Planning and Operations for the Electric Power Sector: Methods\, Applications\, and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe electric power sector is experiencing rapid changes and greater uncertainty than in many years. Electricity demand is projected to increase at a faster rate than previous decades due to electrification and data centers. Increasing wind and solar capacities and thermal generator retirements will likely increase short-term forecast errors and require greater system flexibility. Energy storage costs are decreasing rapidly\, and batteries are likely to play a larger role in system operations\, but questions remain about how much storage capacity will be deployed\, what duration they will offer\, and how to effectively manage a fleet of storage\, particularly in regions with wholesale markets. Finally\, increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events that disrupt system operations present reliability challenges because they induce greater spatial and temporal correlations in forced outage rates of system components.\n\nThis talk will overview several research projects on the planning and operations of power systems under uncertainty. The talk will present the problem of long-term generation and transmission planning under uncertainty\, including the range of methods used and recent improvements. The talk will also present the corresponding challenges to electricity markets from the changes in the resource mix\, including several recent research projects on this topic. Finally\, the talk will frame several remaining challenges for practical methods for both planning and for markets/operations under greater uncertainty\, and future research directions that arise from these challenges.\n\nBiography:\nMort Webster is a Professor of Energy Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. His research develops methods for managing uncertainty for electric power systems planning\, operations\, and electricity market design\, with a focus on stochastic optimization methods. Current projects include the development of stochastic optimization methods for solving multi-stage adaptive expansion planning (generation and/or transmission)\, methods for managing large high-dimensional scenario space\, and real-time market designs to manage uncertainty and incentivize flexible resources. Prof. Webster has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in engineering\, operations research\, and economic journals\, and has served on several national and international panels. Prior to joining Penn State\, Prof. Webster was Assistant and Associate Professor of Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2006-2013) and Assistant Professor of public policy in the Department of Public Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2001-2006). He received a Ph.D. (2000) in Engineering Systems and a M.S. (1996) in Technology and Policy from MIT\, and a B.S.E. (1988) in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Friday Lecture Series | How Ethnic Rebellion Begins: Theory and Evidence from Myanmar
DESCRIPTION:Since independence\, most of the ethnic minority groups in Myanmar—though not all—have rebelled against the central government\, making it home to the most simultaneous and longest ongoing armed conflict in the world. In this talk\, Jangai Jap tracks the origins of armed ethnic organizations in Myanmar and argue that political exclusion—a primary grievance widely thought to motivate ethnic rebellion—played a rather minimal role in the onset of ethnic rebellions. Instead\, what distinguishes ethnic groups in rebellion from other ethnic minority groups is the claim of having an ethnic “homeland” within Myanmar. Individuals from such ethnic groups form nascent armed groups\, which are then fostered and supported by more established ethnic armed organizations. Jap illustrates this dynamic through the role of the Karen National Union and the Kachin Independence Organization in the proliferation of robust ethnic armed organizations in Myanmar.\n \n Jangai Jap is an assistant professor in the Department of International Affairs at the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs. She researches ethnic politics\, nationalism\, minority-state relations\, and Burma/Myanmar politics. Her ongoing work examines interethnic relations\, bureaucratic experiences\, and ethnic rebellion. Previously\, she was an early career provost fellow in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin and a postdoctoral fellow in the Politics of Race and Ethnicity Lab. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from George Washington University and a B.A. in Judaic studies and political science from Yale University.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at valdezjo@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Integrated Product Development: Online Product Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2025 IPD Online Product Launch runs from December 2 at 12 p.m. through December 5 at 12 p.m. During this time\, members of the public are invited to explore a virtual marketplace by visiting the IPD Voting Website. Each participant is given a hypothetical budget to allocate across products based on personal preferences. \nThe challenge concludes with an in-person Product Launch on December 8\, from 5:30–7:30 p.m.\, in the Ross School of Business Winter Garden. Guests will have the opportunity to interact directly with student teams\, experience the products in person\, and vote for their favorites. The evening will culminate with the announcement of the winning team.\n\nTHE CHALLENGE\nThis year’s theme\, “Material Matters\,” asks students to design products that weave sustainability into outdoor products and experiences. Student teams employ sustainably-oriented textiles in physical\, digital\, or hybrid “phygital” products that support engagement with the outdoors – from balconies to backyards to ballparks to beaches to bayous and beyond.\n\nTHE COURSE\nThe University of Michigan’s Integrated Product Design (IPD) program brings together interdisciplinary teams of students from business\, engineering\, information\, and design. Students collaborate in cross-functional teams to operate as independent companies competing in a specific product market.\n\nEach semester\, IPD focuses on a unique design challenge\, and asks teams to operate as independent firms competing in that market. The curriculum combines lectures with hands-on work\, guiding teams through critical stages such as customer discovery\, concept generation\, technical development\, production planning\, pricing\, and marketing.\nThe IPD Challenge is more than a classroom project. It’s a hands-on experience that pushes students to create solutions that could shape industries. By integrating business strategy with technical feasibility and user-centered design\, the competition mirrors the real-world product development process. Students don’t just build prototypes—they develop go-to-market strategies and refine their concepts based on real feedback.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:II Event. Languages Summit
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, December 5\, 2025\n1:00–4:00 PM\nAssembly Hall (Fourth Floor)\, Rackham Building\, 915 E. Washington St. Ann Arbor\n\nPublic Program at https://myumi.ch/5kx9r\n\nVisit http://myumi.ch/8q8pZ to participate via Zoom (registration required).\n\nThe University of Michigan (U-M) has long been a national leader in foreign language learning\, supported by an unmatched infrastructure that includes language departments and resource centers across the university\, extensive international library holdings\, internship and fellowship opportunities for language and cultural study abroad for undergraduate and graduate students\, and a stellar faculty of LEO lecturers and tenure-track professors whose teaching and research reflect global perspectives.\n\nFor decades\, the International Institute (II) has been an integral part of this infrastructure\, hosting six National Resource Centers (NRCs) and six Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) centers funded under Title VI of the U.S. Department of Education. These programs have provided vital resources that sustain U-M’s excellence in world languages\, including a broad array of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs). They have allowed the II to offer significant support for language study\, study abroad\, international internships\, and research opportunities for U-M students.\n\nOn September 10\, 2025\, the U.S. Department of Education summarily canceled its Title VI funding\, stating that the program was no longer “…consistent with Administration priorities” and with “advanc[ing] American interests or values.” With this notification\, the Department prematurely terminated a four-year grant three years into the contract\, and informed the principal investigators (PIs) that it would not seek Title VI funding from Congress in future budgets.\n\nThis rescission\, resulting in a 20% cut to the II’s annual budget\, has broad ramifications across the university. Title VI funding directly supported instruction in Armenian\, Filipino\, Indonesian\, Khmer\, Tamil\, Thai\, Turkish\, and Vietnamese\, covering salaries for nine lecturers who taught 54 unique courses over the past two years\, for a total of 79 classes offered. Beyond this immediate budgetary cliff\, the loss of the Title VI ecosystem – including FLAS grants for undergraduate and graduate students\, and NRCs in Area Studies – threatens U-M’s leading role in the teaching of world languages.\n\nHow can we protect and nurture that role with or without federal funding? What resources does U-M harbor\, what obstacles does it face\, and what opportunities can we identify for sustaining the rich tapestry of language study in all of its dimensions? The Languages Summit will bring together faculty\, staff\, leadership\, and stakeholders from across the university to share information\, discuss challenges\, develop strategies\, and secure the future of languages at U-M.\n\nSome guiding questions around which we seek to structure the conversations include:\n\n▪︎ How does U-M define and communicate its commitment to the teaching\, learning\, and study of\, and in\, the broadest array of languages – arguably a key plank in the very notion of “the university”?\n\n▪︎ Where do we see the biggest challenge or obstacle to our work\, whether now or in the foreseeable future?\n\n▪︎ Given the most recent releases of DeepL\, Grok\, and Apple’s “Live Translation” AirPods\, what is the argument for studying languages? How do we approach languages—as skill\, as tool\, as cultural competence\, as life-changing experience\, and/or as object of study? Where do we think our students are on this question?\n\n▪︎ What actions should the university take now to ensure a sustainable future for languages in all their diversity at Michigan?\n\nThe event will combine short\, focused presentations from representatives of different units around campus with ample time for collective discussion. We hope you can join us.\n\n- - -\n\nCosponsors: II Centers & Programs (African Studies Center\, Center for Armenian Studies\, Center for Emerging Democracies\, Center for Japanese Studies\, Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies\, Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\, Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, Center for South Asian Studies\, Center for Southeast Asian Studies\, Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, Donia Human Rights Center\, Global Islamic Studies Center\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, Nam Center for Korean Studies\, Program in International & Comparative Studies\, Weiser Center for Europe & Eurasia)\, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures\, Department of Classical Studies\, Language Resource Center\, Department of Linguistics\, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures\, University of Michigan Library\, Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures\, Department of Middle East Studies\, Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\n- - -\n\nAccommodation: If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Accounting for Socialization: Professional Education and Quantitative Governance
DESCRIPTION:“Accountability” has become an increasingly prominent form of governance across the globe. However\, we know little about how the people who craft and implement such policies learn the rationale of accountability. How do future policy professionals learn accountability? That is\, how is accountability\, as a form of governance\, taught and learned? These questions pertain to professional socialization and are key to understanding the spread and implementation of accountability policies across organizations. To answer these questions\, we draw from a 2-year ethnography of a cohort of students at a highly regarded Masters of Public Affairs (MPA) program. Utilizing an inhabited institutional approach\, we find that the students learn accountability indirectly through an emphasis on the quantitative techniques that facilitate accountability. Instead of directly debating forms of governance such as accountability\, the students become versed in quantitative “language” and “tools\,” which in different ways support or actively promote forms of accountability in their careers. As an institutional rationale and form of governance\, accountability is inhabited by policy professionals who have been socialized into quantitative language and tools.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Edge States on Sharply Joined Photonic Crystals
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Edge states are important in stably transmitting information and energy. We investigate edge states in continuous models of photonic crystals with piecewise constant coefficients\, which are more realistic and controllable for manufacturing optical devices. First\, we show the existence of Dirac points on honeycomb structures with suitable symmetries. Then we show that when perturbed in two appropriate ways\, the perturbed honeycomb structures have a common band gap\, and when joined along suitable interfaces\, there exist edge states which propagate along the interfaces and exponentially decay away from the interfaces. Our rigorous analysis confirms the heuristic effective theory results. The main tools used are layer potentials\, asymptotic analysis\, the Gohberg-Sigal theory and Lyapunov-Schmidt reductions. This is joint work with Junshan Lin\, Jiayu Qiu\, Hai Zhang.\n\nContact: Peter Miller

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Bananapocalypse: Un/Making Plantation Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Department of Anthropology presents its fall 2025 Roy A. Rappaport Lecture Series\, “Bananapocalypse: Un/Making Plantation Capitalism\,” with Assistant Professor Alyssa Paredes:\n\n“Existential crises hang over the producers of the world’s food. Many of these challenges are self-inflicted. In the banana-growing regions of the Southern Philippines\, which produce fruit for export to Japanese markets\, plantations unleash pesticide drift\, food waste\, water effluent\, and fungal pathogens into the surroundings. The plantocratic elite systematically shirks responsibility for these excesses\, using legal contracts\, scientific conventions\, and standards of trade to frame them as “external” to their supply chains. However\, plantation management is regularly proven wrong in its assumption that the things they try to push downstream will not double back to haunt them. Everyday actors on the plantations’ peripheries transform the devices designed to work against them into openings for intervention. Their efforts implore critical scholars of the environment and of global economies to take seriously the possibility that Big Ag’s increasingly frequent failures to reproduce itself are more than just minor inconveniences to business-as-usual. In this series of lectures\, I trace the afterlives of the externalities that commodity production obscures\, disguises\, or otherwise erases from its ambit of accountability. In so doing\, I offer an ethnographic model for turning the commodity studies model\, inherited from generations of anthropologists\, inside-out.”\n\nRappaport lectures will take place on the following fall Fridays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in 411 West Hall. They are free and open to the public. \n\nFriday\, Sept. 12\nElses and Externalities: The Un/Making of Plantation Capitalism \n\nFriday\, Oct. 10\nRejects: Food Cosmetic Standards and the Geopolitics of Waste\n\nFriday\, Nov. 14\nEffluent: Living Downstream of Yourself on the Mindanao River\n\nFriday\, Dec. 5\nForce Majeure: The See-Through Plantation\n\nVIRTUAL PARTICIPATION LINK: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91475190155\n\nIf you need accommodations in order to attend\, please email anthro.exec.secretary@umich.edu.\n\nABOUT ASSISTANT PROFESSOR ALYSSA PAREDES\nAlyssa Paredes is an environmental and economic anthropologist with research interests at the intersection of industrial agriculture\, transnational supply chains\, and social mobilization between the Southern Philippines and Japan. Her book manuscript\, tentatively titled “Bananapocalypse: An Ethnography of the Commodity for the 21st Century\,” is under contract with the University of California Press. Additionally\, her work appears in journals in anthropology\, history\, geography\, food studies\, and Asian studies. She is also co-editor of “Halo-Halo Ecologies: The Emergent Environments Behind Filipino Food” (University of Hawaii Press 2025). She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Yale University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: Local Positivity
DESCRIPTION:Seshadri constants provide a fundamental numerical measure of the local positivity of line bundles. In this talk\, I will discuss their interpretation via blow-ups\, jet separation\, and asymptotic multiplier ideals\, highlighting how these invariants encode the geometry of base loci. Finally\, I will present examples on surfaces and on blow-ups of \mathbb{P}^2 that illustrate how these ideas appear in explicit calculations and connect to conjectures such as Nagata’s.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Matthew Kohn
DESCRIPTION:Leucogranites (highly felsic intrusive bodies with <3% Fe-Mg minerals) represent small fractions of granitic rocks overall\, but often have unusual chemistries and structural settings. The Himalayan leucogranites are the most well-studied worldwide\, are abundant at the crest of the Himalaya\, and are associated with Earth’s largest continental normal fault system– the South Tibetan Detachment System (STDS). These sheet-like bodies have crystallization ages from ≤~15 to ~24 Ma\, range from undeformed to highly sheared\, and have newly-discovered economic resources\, especially in Li (spodumene) and Be (beryl)\, but also Nb-Ta\, and W-Sn. Trace element and isotope geochemistry link Himalayan leucogranites to partial melting of underlying\, high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Greater Himalayan Sequence (GHS).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NERS Colloquium: Reactor Core & System Design Research at UW-Madison
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This talk will give an overview of a few different projects at UW-Madison on reactor technology and integrated energy systems. Firstly\, an irregular design of PWR assembly is introduced\, which allows the number of pins to be increased while maintaining backward compatibility\, hence facilitating core uprates. Secondly\, an overview of our work on integrated energy systems will be presented. In an increasingly volatile electricity market\, there are opportunities for nuclear energy to maximize economic value through flexible dispatch. This can be facilitated by integration of thermal energy storage which can be discharged at periods of high demand. Thermal energy storage also presents opportunities for tight integration of nuclear and solar thermal energy\, providing synergistic benefits and increasing project value. Finally\, integration of low temperature cogeneration\, for example seawater desalination\, can again increase revenue\, and thermal energy storage presents opportunities for maximizing the value of the integrated system.\n \nBio: Dr Ben Lindley is an Assistant Professor in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics at UW-Madison. His current research focusses on the computational modelling\, design & development of fission and fusion energy systems. Ben holds a joint faculty appointment at Argonne National Laboratory and co-founded Realta Fusion\, a UW-Madison spinout aiming to commercialize fusion energy. Ben holds a PhD in Nuclear Engineering and MEng & BA degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cambridge\, UK (2007-2014).\n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers\, industry experts\, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students\, faculty\, and guests. Covering a wide range of topics—from cutting-edge research and emerging technologies to policy\, education\, and professional development—the weekly talks offer an opportunity to explore current issues and innovations shaping the future of the field.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology Seminar: From Mostow rigidity to singularity of stationary measures
DESCRIPTION:Given a finitely supported probability measure on a Kleinian group\, Kaimanovich showed that the Poisson boundary of the associated random walk is the boundary of hyperbolic space equipped with the hitting measure\, which is the unique stationary measure. It has been conjectured that this stationary measure is singular with respect to conformal measures of the Kleinian group (or Patterson--Sullivan measures). In this talk\, I will explain how Mostow rigidity can be generalized to show this expected singularity when the Kleinian group is not convex cocompact. If time permits\, I will also discuss corresponding results for random walks on mapping class groups and stationary measures on the Thurston boundary of Teichmüller space. This is joint work with Andrew Zimmer.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:December Movie Night - Alice
DESCRIPTION:Alice is a dramatic thriller written and directed by Krystin Ver Linden\, starring Keke Palmer\, Jonny Lee Miller\, Common\, Gaius Charles\, and Alicia Witt. Set in rural Georgia\, the film follows Alice\, an enslaved woman living on a plantation under the cruel control of her owner\, Paul Bennet. After a harrowing escape into the surrounding woods\, Alice discovers that it is\, in fact\, the year 1973\, not the antebellum South as she had been led to believe her entire life.\n\nStunned by the revelation and determined to understand her new reality\, Alice is taken in by a truck driver named Frank. Inspired by 1970s Blaxploitation films and determined to reclaim her stolen life\, she sets out on a quest for freedom\, justice\, and empowerment. Blending historical drama with modern themes\, Alice is a powerful and provocative reimagining of American history\, exploring resilience\, self-discovery\, and the enduring fight for liberation.\n\nThis movie night is brought to you by the Ginsberg Student Advisory Board\, whose support of the Ginsberg Center’s work helps to create a culture of community and civic engagement.\n\nPlease note: The movies selected for screening do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Ginsberg Center or its affiliates\, and their inclusion does not constitute an endorsement of any particular viewpoint.
