SUMMARY:Exhibition:Consequence - Group Art Exhibition - Art as Environmental Activism
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition is an in-depth exploration of the role of art as a powerful catalyst for environmental activism. At first glance\, these works each possess striking beauty. However\, a closer inspection reveals a profound and often unsettling depth that challenges one’s perceptions. \n\nThe artworks are imbued with many layers of meaning\, inviting us to engage critically with the themes presented and encouraging us to reflect on our often-fraught relationship with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and techniques\, these works prompt us to confront uncomfortable truths about climate change\, habitat loss\, and the disappearing biodiversity around us. \n\nCampbell’s captivating “Heatscape” series transforms what is often an intangible concept into the tangible realm by visually translating heat distribution data to depict the impact of urban design on climate. This series offers a profound exploration of the intriguing phenomenon known as \"urban heat islands”\, a term that describes urban areas that absorb and radiate significantly more heat than their surrounding rural landscapes due to human activities and infrastructure.\n\n“Heatscape” invites us to engage in a deeper reflection about the profound impact that human ingenuity has wielded over the natural world\, serving as a visual reminder of our responsibility to urban design that is considerate to the environment and communities it impacts. This work challenges us to recognize the interplay between our lifestyles and the environment\, urging a dialogue about sustainable practices that could mitigate the effects of these heat islands.\n\nSnider’s work powerfully illustrates the remnants of industrialization\, capturing the unsettling essence of its aftermath. In his art\, we encounter an urban landscape that is strikingly devoid of human presence\, creating an almost haunting atmosphere. This absence of people amplifies the eerie feeling and serves as a warning about the enduring consequences of industrial progress. It prompts viewers to reflect on the environmental impact and the transformations that society has undergone\, urging us to consider what aspects of our world will persist in the wake of such change. Ultimately\, Snider’s poignant depictions challenge us to confront the stark reality of a landscape altered by human activity\, inviting contemplation on both the beauty and the desolation that can coexist in our modern environments.\n\nSandra Osip’s sculptures delve deeply into the juxtaposition of decay and destruction alongside the concepts of life and growth. Through her abstract structures\, she illustrates the profound effects climate change has on our urban landscapes and the planet as a whole. These pieces serve as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human impact\, while Osip’s imaginative flowers evoke a sense of nostalgia and loss\, symbolizing the beauty of what has been irretrievably diminished in our world. By celebrating these natural forms\, she not only honors the richness of biodiversity but also raises awareness about the environmental crisis we face.\n\nCassells’ work not only celebrates a profound connection to nature and sustainable practices but also serves to illuminate the significant impact that climate change has on vulnerable communities. Through her art\, she investigates the intricate relationships between different environmental systems\, emphasizing how they are all interconnected. \n\nBy delving into these themes\, Cassells sheds light on the challenges faced by communities that often bear the brunt of climate change despite contributing the least to the problem. Her exploration encourages a deeper understanding of how environmental changes affect social structures and the lives of people in marginalized areas. In doing so\, she advocates for greater awareness and action to address these issues\, ultimately promoting a more sustainable and equitable future for all. \n\nShanna Merola’s photo-collages are informed by the stories of environmental justice struggles past and present. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Researching\, wandering\, photographing\, and creating together while interrogating the interconnectedness of environmental degradation\, and global corporatism\, and community response.\n\nSobel takes a more straightforward approach by helping us begin to grasp the reality of living in a world affected by climate change. Her work described as “wilderness-based\, science-inspired”\, serves as a bridge\, connecting viewers to experiences that might seem too distant or unfolding too slowly for most people to comprehend firsthand. In doing so\, she not only raises awareness but also encourages dialogue about the pressing challenges our planet faces. Through her work\, Sobel facilitates a deeper understanding of the interconnection between humanity and the environment\, compelling us to reflect on our role in addressing these urgent issues.\n\nThese diverse approaches to creating art serve as powerful connections to the most critical and pressing environmental issues of our time. This engagement serves to deepen our understanding of these challenges from multiple perspectives\, including cultural\, social\, and scientific viewpoints. \nFurthermore\, these approaches are not only meant to inform but also to inspire. They challenge us to reconsider our relationship with the planet and encourage us to take actionable steps toward sustainability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Brothers and Uncles\, Kings and Typecutters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the evolution of the printed page through the prism of one remarkable family of scholar-printers. \n\nPrinting changed the speed and scale at which information circulated. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. View nineteen examples chosen to show the breadth of the Michigan Estienne collection in an era of amazing change.\n\nImage: Detail from \"Polemōnos\, Himeriou\, kai allōn tinōn meletai\,\" by Henri Estienne\, Paris 1567. The Olive tree device is the best-known emblem of the Estienne house\, surviving in over a dozen forms. First used by Robert I in 1526\, it refers to a passage in Romans 11 that praises humility in the face of divine will.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cathy Barry Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem.\n\nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it.\n\nRecently\, Cathy has embarked on a new adventure: creating art directly from plant materials. By collecting\, drying\, and weaving leaves\, she has developed an exciting rhythm in her process. Through simple weaving\, twining\, and basketry techniques\, she has deepened her enthusiasm for and connection to the plants surrounding her in her yard and neighborhood. This integration of materials with form and subject in her work evokes a serene wholeness that reflects nature's inherent wisdom. Additionally\, her journey has sparked a curiosity to explore the historical uses and roles of plants throughout history.\n\nCathy Barry is an artist and instructor living and working in Ann Arbor\, Mi. She is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan (UM) Stamps School of Art and Design\, the UM Program in the Environment and the UM Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Summer Institute Course - December 2025- Health and Retirement Study (HRS) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:December 2025- Health and Retirement Study (HRS) Workshop\nDecember 8-10\, 2025\n10:00am-3:00pm EST\nLive Online via Zoom\n\nThe Health and Retirement Study (hrsonline.isr.umich.edu) Summer Workshop is intended to give participants an introduction to the study that will enable them to use the data for research. HRS is a large-scale longitudinal study with more than 20 years of data on the labor force participation and health transitions that individuals undergo toward the end of their work lives and in the years that follow.\n\nDisability Data in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) is a 3-day online (Zoom) workshop intended to give participants an overview of the disability data resources in the HRS. Content lectures delivered by HRS co-investigators and content area experts will cover a range of topics including:\n\n● The various ways that disability\, disabling conditions\, health\, and functioning are measured in the HRS\;\n● How measures of disability have changed as the survey has evolved\;\n● How the HRS captures disability benefit receipt in the survey and through and linkage with data from the Social Security Administration\;\n● How disability-related topics like employer accommodations\, assistive technology and personal assistance are measured in the survey.\n\nIn addition to presentations on these topics\, the workshop will feature labs focused on working with work disability measures in Section M and disability spell data in the RAND HRS.\n\nStudents will have the opportunity to present research ideas and receive feedback from the workshop faculty and other students.\n\nThe course is designed for those with experience using HRS data or for those who have taken the introductory HRS workshop. The data training portion assumes some familiarity with STATA.\n\nAmanda Sonnega is a Research Scientist in the Survey Research Center of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan (UM)\, where she directs communication\, outreach\, and education efforts for the Health and Retirement Study. She received her Ph.D. through the Department of Health\, Behavior & Society at the Johns Hopkins University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship within the ISR program in Social Environment and Health. She has lectured in the UM School of Public Health\, teaching Psychosocial Factors in Health-related Behavior. Her research focuses on life course trajectories of physical and mental health\; institutional and personal factors associated with vulnerability and resilience in aging individuals\; and work transitions and their broad effects on health and well-being.\n\nThe Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques provides rigorous and high quality graduate level training in all phases of survey research. The noncredit courses are open to all. The courses are live online via Zoom. Registration and payment are required. Course fees are based on the total number of hours assigned to each course\, the hours are listed on the course description. The 2025 schedule lists additional courses. If you have any questions regarding the application process\, please use the online contact form or email the Summer Institute at isr-summer@umich.edu .\n\nThe program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design\, implementation\, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948\, and has offered such courses every summer since. The Summer Institute uses the sample survey as the basic instrument for the scientific measurement of human activity. It presents sample survey methods in courses designed to meet the educational needs of those specializing in social and behavioral research such as professionals in business\, public health\, natural resources\, law\, medicine\, nursing\, social work\, and many other domains of study.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MIDAS AI Sandbox
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the AI SandboxThe AI Sandbox is a weekly\, hands-on learning space where faculty\, researchers\, and staff across campus can explore and experiment with real AI tools. Each session introduces models used in research\, from image segmentation to text classification\, and walks you through how to run them in your browser\, step by step. No prior experience is required\, just bring your laptop and curiosity! These are not lectures or office hours. You’ll follow guided demos\, test out pre-trained models\, and have time to explore either with example datasets or your own research material. Each week focuses on a different theme\, with support provided throughout.Due to popular demand\, registration is now required. Sessions are small to ensure everyone gets guided support\, but you’re welcome to bring along colleagues\; groups of up to five can attend together.\n\nNext Session: Introduction to Natural Language Processing AI models do more than read text. They can summarize\, translate\, compare\, and classify it.In the upcoming AI Sandbox sessions\, you’ll see how modern language models work and how they can support common research tasks\, from reviewing abstracts to analyzing interview transcripts. You’ll get hands-on practice with:EmbeddingGemma-300M for measuring how similar two pieces of text are\, useful for clustering\, deduplication\, and alignment checksBART-Large-MNLI for classifying text into your own categories without extra trainingMADLAD-400 for straightforward translation across languagesBART-Large-CNN for turning long passages into concise summariesThe Green Court building at 3520\, Green Ct.\, MI 48105. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships: Richard Gonzalez
DESCRIPTION:Rich Gonzalez of the University of Michigan joins RCGD's Fall Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships.\n\nCheck back for details about this talk.\n\nAbout the series:\nHumans are social animals and from the earliest days of life\, are dependent on the quality of social relationships with significant others: family\, kin\, friends\, and a growing social network of online acquaintances. But\, how do we conduct research and come to understand the social processes transpiring in these significant social connections with others? What are the consequences for individual development and mental health outcomes of having close intimate relationships in one’s life? There is also a darker side to some relationships in the form of violence\, aggression\, and conflict. How do we study these processes? Social media and artificial intelligence have opened up new ways of thinking about “what is a social relationship?” and how many of these “friends” can one truly have.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on different types of social relationships\, spanning family and parent-child relationships\, friendships\, peer networks\, romantic relationships\, attachment relationships\, and the use of online media to maintain social connections. Although several speakers are senior scholars with extensive research backgrounds in the field\, many are junior scholars who are traversing new paths into the science of social relationships. Please join us Mondays to learn more about the exciting field of social relationships!\n\nThese events are held Mondays from 3:30 to 5.\nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrganized by Brenda Volling and Richard Gonzalez.\nAs permissions allow\, seminars are later posted to our YouTube playlist.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Adapted Optimal Transport in Mathematical Finance: Structure\, Stability and Transport Inequalities
DESCRIPTION:The Wasserstein distance is an important instance of an optimal transport cost. Its numerous mathematical properties as well as applications to various fields such as mathematical finance and statistics have been well studied in recent years. The adapted Wasserstein distance extends this theory to laws of stochastic processes\, making it particularly well suited for analyzing stochastic optimization problems in mathematical finance.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present our study on the quantitative and structural aspects of adapted optimal transport. We provide quantitative comparisons between adapted and classical Wasserstein distances\, characterizing compact sets in the adapted Wasserstein space. I will then discuss how the concentration of measure phenomenon is connected to transport-entropy inequalities in the adapted setting. These results yield explicit quantitative bounds and stability estimates that are useful for applications in mathematical finance. I will also discuss some ongoing and prospective research directions.\n\nThis talk is based on joint works with B.Acciaio\, J.Blanchet\, M.Larsson and J.Wiesel.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Connection formulas for the Heun equation from Painlevé theory
DESCRIPTION:Heun equation is the second order differential equation with 4 regular singularities and it plays important role in theoretical physics. Unlike the hypergeometric equation\, which has 3 regular singularities\, the connection formulas for Heun equation don't have expressions in terms of elementary functions. Recently they were written in terms of semiclassical conformal blocks by Bonelli-Iossa-Lichtig-Tanzini. We derive these formulas using the interplay between Heun equations and Painlevé equations. This computation in particular provides the expression for the semiclassical conformal blocks within the Painlevé theory. This is the joint work with Harini Desiraju\, Promit Ghosal\, and Oleg Lisovyy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Algebraic Number Theory & Lattice-Based Cryptography
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Classical algebraic number theory\, developed throughout the 1800s\, has found an exciting new application in the 2000s: cryptographic systems with attractive features like high efficiency\, 'post-quantum' security\, and the ability to compute on encrypted data.\n\nThis talk will recap some of the foundational ideas and results in this area\, like the connection between \"Ring-LWE\" and problems on \"ideal lattices\" (i.e.\, ideals in number rings)\, and how they give rise to encrypted computation. The speaker will also share some of his favorite open problems.\n\n(A basic understanding of number fields\, their rings of integers and ideals\, and how these give rise to lattices\, will be very helpful but not absolutely necessary.)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Gromov Boundary of the Grand Arc Graph
DESCRIPTION:In 1999\, E. Klarreich found a very intriguing correspondence between the Gromov boundary of the curve graph for closed surfaces (a very GGT object) with the space of ending laminations on the surface (a very geometric object). Since then\, Hamendstädt\, Schleimer and Pho-On have thought about various proofs for this result\, and generalizations to the arc graph / the arc-and-curve graph for finite-type surfaces. The grand arc graph is a type of arc graph associated with certain infinite-type surfaces\, which is also an infinite-diameter hyperbolic graph. In this talk\, we shall talk about a couple of ways to define “laminations that should correspond to points on the Gromov boundary of the grand arc graph”. This work is joint with Carolyn Abbott and Assaf Bar-Natan.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HSL Numbers of Toric Face Rings
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Hartshorne-Speiser-Lyubeznik numbers (HSL numbers) are a measure of nilpotency of the action of Frobenius on the local cohomology modules of a commutative Noetherian ring of positive characteristic. By the Hartshorne-Speiser-Lyubeznik theorem these HSL numbers are finite\, but in general an explicit upper bound for these numbers is not known. In this talk we present an explicit upper bound for the HSL numbers of toric face rings and semigroup rings\, and discuss the differences in these two bounds.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Integrated Product Development: In-Person Product Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2025 IPD Online Product Launch runs from December 2 at 12 p.m. through December 5 at 12 p.m. During this time\, members of the public are invited to explore a virtual marketplace by visiting the IPD Voting Website. Each participant is given a hypothetical budget to allocate across products based on personal preferences.\n\nThe challenge concludes with an in-person Product Launch on December 8\, from 5:30–7:30 p.m.\, in the Ross School of Business Winter Garden. Guests will have the opportunity to interact directly with student teams\, experience the products in person\, and vote for their favorites. The evening will culminate with the announcement of the winning team.\n\nTHE CHALLENGE\nThis year’s theme\, “Material Matters\,” asks students to design products that weave sustainability into outdoor products and experiences. Student teams employ sustainably-oriented textiles in physical\, digital\, or hybrid “phygital” products that support engagement with the outdoors – from balconies to backyards to ballparks to beaches to bayous and beyond.\n\nTHE COURSE\nThe University of Michigan’s Integrated Product Design (IPD) program brings together interdisciplinary teams of students from business\, engineering\, information\, and design. Students collaborate in cross-functional teams to operate as independent companies competing in a specific product market.\n\nEach semester\, IPD focuses on a unique design challenge\, and asks teams to operate as independent firms competing in that market. The curriculum combines lectures with hands-on work\, guiding teams through critical stages such as customer discovery\, concept generation\, technical development\, production planning\, pricing\, and marketing.\nThe IPD Challenge is more than a classroom project. It’s a hands-on experience that pushes students to create solutions that could shape industries. By integrating business strategy with technical feasibility and user-centered design\, the competition mirrors the real-world product development process. Students don’t just build prototypes—they develop go-to-market strategies and refine their concepts based on real feedback.

SUMMARY:Performance:Over The Rhine
DESCRIPTION:A holiday show and more\n\nOver the Rhine\n2025 Christmas Tour Thoughts\n\nOne December\, not long after Over the Rhine began recording and touring\, we were invited to perform some seasonal songs on a public radio station in Cincinnati. It was Christmastime and apparently they thought we were up to the task. We worked up a few carols and traditional tunes and Karin even read a poem by Thomas Hardy called\, The Oxen.\n\nIt actually felt really good and conjured up an unusual mix of feelings from childhood: innocence\, loss\, wonder\, joy\, sadness. I think we were surprised.\n\nPeople must have tuned into the radio broadcast\, because we began receiving inquiries as to whether we had recorded any of our Christmas songs. I don’t think we had considered it at the time\, but any young\, struggling songwriter is open to the suggestions of the marketplace\, and people were persistent.\n\nIn December of 1996 – can it really be almost 30 years ago? – we recorded and released our first song cycle of some of the Christmas carols that still haunted us. We included a few original tunes and called our wintry mix The Darkest Night Of The Year. We played a special “darkest night” release concert on winter solstice in an old 1300-seat theater in Cincinnati. Every last seat was full. Folks began snatching up copies and seemed to agree that they hadn’t heard anything quite like it.\n\nWe began playing concerts around the Midwest every December and found that the rooms were usually packed full of people who had bundled in out of the cold with prized compatriots. Hats and scarves abounded. If you stepped outside during intermission\, you could make ghosts with your breath in the crisp night air. And it was dark – oh so dark: a time of year with its own music.\n\nA decade later\, in 2006\, we released our first full collection of original Christmas/holiday songs called Snow Angels. What is it about Christmas music and the undeniable gravitational pull it exerts on some songwriters? So many Christmas songs have already been written. I think we are genuinely curious about the ones that haven't yet been written.\n\nWe continued to tour every December and these special year-winding-down concerts began to feel like an annual tradition – gatherings of extended musical family\, without whom\, we’d be homeless.\n\nBy the time we released our third holiday album of original songs\, Blood Oranges In The Snow\, in December of 2014\, Karin suggested we had discovered a new genre of music: Reality Christmas.\n\nIt’s true: if you’ve buried a loved one\, or lost a job\, or battled a chronic illness\, that stuff doesn’t go away during the holidays. It can be a complicated season for many of us.\n\nAnd then there’s family.\n\nWhen Karin and I make the annual holiday pilgrimage home to visit family and pull into the driveway and turn off the car\, one of us inevitably looks over at the other and says\, “Tie a rope around my waist\, I’m goin’ in.”\n\nIn 2025\, just shy of 30 years after releasing our first holiday CD\, we are still at it. This year\, we will be leaning into some harmonies and making an intimate but hopefully holy ruckus. It won’t be all Christmas music: we’ll certainly mix in tunes from many of our records along the way. But hopefully it’s still true: hopefully you haven’t heard anything quite like it.\nMaybe a midnight snow will fall and turn each streetlight into its own private snow globe.\n\nMaybe\, regardless of whatever reality Christmas brings\, we’ll hear a faint echo of a song once rumored to have been sung by angels\, a song of peace on earth\, goodwill toward all…\n\nWe’ve never heard anything quite like it.\n\nWe hope you’ll join us\,\n\nLinford Detweiler\nWith Karin close by\nNowhere Else\nClinton County\, Ohio

DESCRIPTION:Kenneth Kiesler\, conductor\nAna María Otamendi and Elena Lacheva\, piano\n\nPROGRAM\n\n*Don Giovanni Overture*\, Mozart \n*Don Juan*\, Strauss\nConcerto for Two Pianos\, Mozart \n*Tannhauser Overture*\, Wagner \n\nJoin the University Symphony Orchestra for its final concert of 2025 featuring brilliant and dramatic music from three centuries\, and journeys from passion and desire to transcendence and redemption. International artists and SMTD faculty members Ana María Otamendi and Elena Lacheva are the special guest soloists in Mozart’s witty and elegant Concerto for Two Pianos. \n\nMozart’s *Don Giovanni Overture* introduces the legendary libertine whose tale blends danger\, seduction\, and moral reckoning. The program continues with one of the most virtuosic and electrifying works in all of orchestral music\, *Don Juan*\, Strauss’s brilliant\, vivid\, and virtuosic tone poem which reimagines the same archetypal figure: bold\, impulsive\, and ultimately striving for transcendence.\n\nThe evening and the USO’s fall season come to a grand finale with Wagner’s *Tannhäuser Overture*\, another orchestral showpiece centered on the powerful tensions between earthly desire\, longing\, and spiritual redemption. \n

SUMMARY:Performance:Joy Clark & Kate Peterson
DESCRIPTION:Authentic\, soulful folk from two dynamic songwriters\n\nJoy Clark’s songcraft\, paired with sophisticated progressions\, and themes of freedom\, love and self-acceptance gained her notice on the national folk and Americana scenes just a few years ago with appearances at Americanafest. She caught the attention of Grammy-winner Allison Russell and was offered a regular spot in her backing band The Rainbow Coalition\, earning her the chance to jam with superstars Brandi Carlile and the Indigo Girls. Talking to The Tennessean\, Russell described Joy as a “a brilliant artist\, writer and singer.”\n\nLansing’s homegrown friend and folksinger describes herself as “raspy\, emo acoustic soul-folk with a touch of optimism and a lot of humanness.”\n\nBeginning in 2005\, Michigan-based singer songmaker and multi-instrumentalist Kate Peterson has traveled the US and Europe winning the hearts of vulnerability lovers everywhere. For 10 years\, she spilled her heart onto hundreds of stages\, opened for her heroes and sparked thousands of laughs (and almost as many tears) with her folk duo\, Nervous but Excited. These days\, in between adventure travel\, Kate is a home-makin’ hobbyist who swaps her wood-working tools for a microphone for only the most special of occasions.\n\nThe roots of her music are still planted firmly in the Pleasantly Aggressive Folk sound that long time fans will find familiar\, but they will quickly notice a depth in her sound that only time and patience can cultivate.

Her latest album Acadia\, released on Nonesuch Records\, showcases her evolution from solo performer to collaborative artist\, featuring partnerships with notable musicians like Aoife O'Donovan and Immanuel Wilkins.\n\nWilliams' distinctive creative process involves \"ruminating\" on single notes until compositions naturally emerge. Beyond traditional fingerpicked guitar\, she demonstrates mastery of multiple instruments including kora\, harp guitar\, banjo\, and electric guitar. Williams' approach emphasizes sustained tones and intricate articulation\, creating music that balances technical precision with ethereal\, floating melodies.

SUMMARY:Performance:Willy Porter
DESCRIPTION:Dazzling finger-style guitar and rich\, compelling songwriting\n\nSome folks are lucky to find what they love to do at an early age and quietly settle in for the long haul expanding and developing their work over the arc of a lifetime. Willy Porter is one of those artists. He has followed his own path to explore the sacred language that music truly is. Thirty years after his solo recording debut\, he continues to reach further into his guitar & pen while stretching the form of what his own music can be. His live shows are guitar driven events—equal parts grit\, soul\, and muscle—that are electrifying\, dynamic\, and wholly original in the way that his voice blends and fuses with his virtuoso fretwork.

SUMMARY:Performance:Vance Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:“If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child\, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife\, the results might be something close to the great Vance Gilbert\" –Richmond Magazine\n\nVance was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. Starting out hoping to be an R&B and jazz singer once at college\, there he discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of the acoustic singer-songwriter thing. Word spread like wildfire about Gilbert's stage-owning singing and playing\, and Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her 1992 Fat City tour where he took much of America by storm and by surprise. “With the voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god..” wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.\n\nMost recently he’s been the opener of choice for Mad About You/Stranger Things star Paul Reiser’s stand-up shows (50 +) for the last 7 years\, along with his own busy acoustic music touring and coaching schedule. \n\nVance's most recent album\, \"The Mother Of Trouble”\, features Grammy winner Lori McKenna on background vocals\, Juno award recipient and Bonnie Raitt Grammy hit song co-writer Joey Landreth on guitars\, and Americana-Roots master mandolinist Joe K. Walsh.
