Students play the part of executives responding to the issues as they unfold\, while leveraging the expertise of communication coaches\, faculty\, and a board of directors made up of esteemed U-M alumni\, to prepare for a press conference attended by real members of the media.\n\nThis year's LCC will be held on January 29-30 and is open to ALL U-M students. SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stamping and Stomping: community inspired relief prints
DESCRIPTION:Currently based in Ann Arbor\, Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker born in Lima\, Peru. Paloma attended art college in Mexico\, where she came face to face with printmaking during her first year at the Facultad de Artes Plásticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa\, Veracruz. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers\, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997\, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration\, social in-visibility\, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. By offering portraits of minorities and their stories\, Nunez-Regueiro’s goal is to create supportive communities for those who need to feel rooted in their geographical space and their present time. \n\nNúñez-Regueiro work is closely related to her experiences of living abroad — the impermanence\, the precarious construction of one's present and even less of one’s future. It is about the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. She is an incessantly positive artist and she profoundly believes in art as a tool to create the social change that can lead us to thoughtful actions\, and the bettering of ourselves and our communities.

DESCRIPTION:Opening December 8\, 2025 and running through January 2026\nGalleryDAAS| Haven Hall| G648| Monday - Friday 10-4pm\n\nThis exhibit showcases stories of resistance\, resilience\, and hope\, in the face of mass incarceration\, police violence\, immigrant detention\, and systematic racial criminalization. Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. The work presented in this exhibit represents only a sliver of the extensive research\, art\, advocacy\, public engagement\, and other products generated by the Carceral State Project over the years.

Despite substantial analysis of the intergenerational mobility of income\, large gaps in our knowledge of the distribution of housing assets and their transmission over time remain\, as housing is generally not reflected by income flows. Using novel linked data that combines survey responses with administrative tax data and information on ownership and valuation from property tax records for over 3.4 million families\, we provide new evidence on the intergenerational transmission of housing capital. We find that housing capital is more persistent across generations than labor income. We document important disparities between average housing outcomes for White and Black children. These differences persist even conditional on parent rank in the distribution of housing assets\, with the gap growing throughout the parental housing capital distribution. A decomposition shows that average differences in children’s labor market outcomes associated with parental assets explain about half of the observed intergenerational persistence (a “labor income channel”)\, and that there is also a substantial “direct channel” — conditional on children having the same earnings\, children of parents with more housing assets have more assets themselves on average. The direct channel is also important for explaining the intergenerational gap in outcomes of Black and White children. Finally\, we present quasi-experimental evidence that local housing supply constraints help explain spatial differences in intergenerational persistence across US counties. Our results establish the importance of housing markets\, both independently from and jointly with labor markets\, in shaping the intergenerational persistence of economic resources.”

DESCRIPTION:Tiffany Ng & Sarah Penrose perform on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:Strongly coupling materials to cavity fields can affect the material’s electronic properties altering the phases of matter. In this talk\, I will first discuss the hybrid light-matter band topology of the monolayer graphene whose electrons can be coupled to both left and right circularly polarized vacuum fluctuations\, and time-reversal symmetry is broken due to an asymmetry between the two polarizations. This discussion will show how the quantum nature of photons affects the topology of the correlated light-matter hybrid wave function. A central finding of Ref. [1] is a relation between the Berry phase and the properties of exchanged photons with matter at light-matter hybridization points in the Brillouin zone. This physics turns out to be generic\, as it also emerges in stacked graphene layers [2]. I will then introduce a quantum optics model to capture the properties of the topological light-matter hybridization gaps and show the presence of chiral edge modes in these gaps [3]. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: What Kinds of Functions Do Neural Networks Learn? Low-Norm vs. Flat Solutions
DESCRIPTION:This talk investigates the fundamental differences between low-norm and flat solutions of shallow ReLU networks training problems\, particularly in high-dimensional settings. We sharply characterize the regularity of the functions learned by neural networks in these two regimes. This enables us to show that global minima with small weight norms exhibit strong generalization guarantees that are dimension-independent. In contrast\, local minima that are “flat” can generalize poorly as the input dimension increases. We attribute this gap to a phenomenon we call neural shattering\, where neurons specialize to extremely sparse input regions\, resulting in activations that are nearly disjoint across data points. This forces the network to rely on large weight magnitudes\, leading to poor generalization. Our analysis establishes an exponential separation between flat and low-norm minima. In particular\, while flatness does imply some degree of generalization\, we show that the corresponding convergence rates necessarily deteriorate exponentially with input dimension. These findings suggest that flatness alone does not fully explain the generalization performance of neural networks.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Exploring the structural biology of enteroviral genome replication
DESCRIPTION:The Enterovirus genus comprises RNA viruses associated with various illnesses\, including the common cold\, poliomyelitis\, acute flaccid paralysis\, and myocarditis. These viruses have conserved cloverleaf-shaped RNA secondary structures at the extreme 5′ end of their genomes\, which are crucial for assembling viral and host proteins\, such as 3CD and PCBP2\, into functional ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes required for genome replication. However\, the high-resolution structures and mechanisms of these cloverleaf RNAs have largely remained unknown. Recently\, we determined the crystal structures of five cloverleaf RNAs from different enteroviral species\, revealing a highly conserved H-type four-way junction fold that positions the 3CD and PCBP2 binding sites far apart. The conserved features observed in these structures\, including a long-range A•C•U base triple\, enabled us to predict structural models for other enteroviruses via homology modeling\, yielding models similar to the experimental structures. Our structure-guided binding analyses\, using recombinantly purified full-length human PCBP2 and viral 3C proteins\, along with the crystal structures of the cloverleaf-3C complexes\, offered further insights into how these viruses assemble RNP complexes for their genome replication within host cells. Moreover\, we demonstrated that antisense oligonucleotides could block high-affinity PCBP2-binding sites\, highlighting the potential to develop therapeutics targeting this replication platform for enteroviral infections. The notable structural conservation among enteroviral cloverleafs observed in our studies underscores opportunities to develop universal therapeutics that target this viral RNP platform across multiple enterovirus infections.

DESCRIPTION:Food Literacy for All is a community-academic partnership course at the University of Michigan supported by the Sustainable Food Systems Initiative\, Program in the Environment\, School for Environment & Sustainability\, and our Michigan-based community partners. \n\nFrom January to April 2026\, Food Literacy for All features dynamic guest speakers each Tuesday evening (6:30-7:50 PM) to address the challenges and opportunities of diverse food systems. The sounds he makes take him places that he might not even predict\, but once there\, greatness always follows.\n\nEcho Dancing is an experiment in how to use the past to shape the future. By recording completely new and repurposed versions of songs from his past\, Escovedo actually gets a chance to rewrite his own history. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate a midwestern songwriting icon\n\nBeloved\, legendary songwriter\, Michigan’s own Dick Siegel\, has performed his iconic songs across the country\, from New York to Texas\, and internationally\, since he exploded on the Detroit/Ann Arbor music scene in the 1980s with the release of his critically acclaimed first album\, SNAP!  Celebrating his nearly 50 year musical career\, Dick will be honored tonight by his musical friends and family with tributes and performances of some of his most well-known songs on the stage of The Ark\, where Dick has performed countless times over the years. The lineup will be announced soon. Per Dick and his family’s request\, all proceeds from this concert will go to support The Ark.

DESCRIPTION:Masters of mandolin and guitar\n\nMike Marshall is one of the world’s most accomplished and versatile string instrumentalists and a three-time Grammy nominee. A master of mandolin\, guitar\, mandocello\, and violin\, he blends American roots with classical\, jazz\, pop\, and Brazilian music. At 19\, he joined the David Grisman Quintet and has since produced over 40 recordings while collaborating with Bela Fleck\, Edgar Meyer\, and Chris Thile. Deeply committed to education\, Mike directed the Acoustic Music Seminar at SMF and teaches globally. With his wife\, German mandolinist Caterina Lichtenberg\, he co-founded the Mandolin World Retreats and continues to tour internationally\, inspiring musicians worldwide.\n\nBorn in Piracicaba\, Brazil\, Alessandro Penezzi is one of the great virtuosos of Brazilian guitar. He graduated in Popular Music from Unicamp with a specialization in Creative Processes from Faculdade Souza Lima\, and has been teaching courses\, workshops\, and seminars at various music festivals in Brazil and abroad. Penezzi is a multi-instrumentalist and prolific composer and has toured extensively worldwide. He plays the seven-string guitar\, tenor guitar\, cavaquinho\, mandolin and flute\, and has received numerous honors and nominations for his performances as an instrumentalist and composer. He has also been highlighted in the Visa MPB Instrumental\, Tim de Música Brasileira\, and Shell de Teatro and Prêmio da Música Brasileira awards.

DESCRIPTION:“Music\, poetry\, and observations aimed directly at your soul” –Melissa Clarke Americana Highways\n\nAs a babe Jeffrey Martin sought out solitude as often as he could find it. He’s always been that way\, and he has never understood the whole phenomenon of smiling in pictures\, although he is a very happy guy. One night in middle school he stayed up under the covers with a flashlight and a DiscMan\, listening to Reba McEntire’s 'That’s the Night that the Lights Went Out in Georgia' on repeat until the DiscMan ran out of batteries. That night he became a songwriter\, although he didn’t actually write a song until years later. After high school he spent a few years distracting himself from having to gather up the courage to do what he knew he had to do.\n\nEventually he found his way to a writing degree\, and then a teaching degree. He wrote most days like his life depended on it\, all sorts of things\, not just songs\, but songs too. He fell in love with teaching high school English\, which was fantastic because he never thought he’d actually come to truly love it. His students were fierce and unstoppable forces of noise and curiosity\, and for all that they took from him in sleep and sense\, they gave him a hundred times back in sparks and humility.  \n\nAll the while he was also playing truckloads of music. There was one weekend where he flew to LA while grading essays on the plane\, played two shows\, and then flew back home\, still grading essays\, and woke up to teach at 5 am on Monday morning. It was around this time he started wondering if such a life was sustainable.\n\nAlas\, music\, the tour life\, was a constant raccoon scratching at the back door. Jeffrey spent nights on end sitting up in bed\, and then sitting on the front porch\, staring off into the dark\, wondering if he could bear to leave teaching to go on tour full time. Eventually his brain caught up with what his guts had known for months. With tears in his eyes he announced to his students that he wouldn’t be back the following year\, and that he didn’t feel right hollering at them to chase their dreams at all cost if he wasn’t going to do the same.\n\nJeffrey Martin tours full time now. He is always making music\, and he is always coming through your town. He misses teaching like you might miss a good old friend who you know you’ll meet again.
