This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan, led by Professor William Lopez, and the University of Iowa, led by Professor Nicole Novak, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites, spoke to advocates, detainees, their families, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. Paloma attended art college in Mexico, where she came face to face with printmaking during her first year at the Facultad de Artes Pl\u00e1sticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa, Veracruz. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration, social in-visibility, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. Despite substantial analysis of the intergenerational mobility of income, large gaps in our knowledge of the distribution of housing assets and their transmission over time remain, as housing is generally not reflected by income flows. Using novel linked data that combines survey responses with administrative tax data and information on ownership and valuation from property tax records for over 3.4 million families, we provide new evidence on the intergenerational transmission of housing capital. We find that housing capital is more persistent across generations than labor income. We document important disparities between average housing outcomes for White and Black children. These differences persist even conditional on parent rank in the distribution of housing assets, with the gap growing throughout the parental housing capital distribution. A decomposition shows that average differences in children\u2019s labor market outcomes associated with parental assets explain about half of the observed intergenerational persistence (a \u201clabor income channel\u201d), and that there is also a substantial \u201cdirect channel\u201d \u2014 conditional on children having the same earnings, children of parents with more housing assets have more assets themselves on average. The direct channel is also important for explaining the intergenerational gap in outcomes of Black and White children. Finally, we present quasi-experimental evidence that local housing supply constraints help explain spatial differences in intergenerational persistence across US counties. Our results establish the importance of housing markets, both independently from and jointly with labor markets, in shaping the intergenerational persistence of economic resources.\u201d", In this talk, I will first discuss the hybrid light-matter band topology of the monolayer graphene whose electrons can be coupled to both left and right circularly polarized vacuum fluctuations, and time-reversal symmetry is broken due to an asymmetry between the two polarizations. This discussion will show how the quantum nature of photons affects the topology of the correlated light-matter hybrid wave function. A central finding of Ref. [1] is a relation between the Berry phase and the properties of exchanged photons with matter at light-matter hybridization points in the Brillouin zone. This physics turns out to be generic, as it also emerges in stacked graphene layers [2]. I will then introduce a quantum optics model to capture the properties of the topological light-matter hybridization gaps and show the presence of chiral edge modes in these gaps [3]. This enables us to show that global minima with small weight norms exhibit strong generalization guarantees that are dimension-independent. In contrast, local minima that are \u201cflat\u201d can generalize poorly as the input dimension increases. We attribute this gap to a phenomenon we call neural shattering, where neurons specialize to extremely sparse input regions, resulting in activations that are nearly disjoint across data points. This forces the network to rely on large weight magnitudes, leading to poor generalization. Our analysis establishes an exponential separation between flat and low-norm minima. In particular, while flatness does imply some degree of generalization, we show that the corresponding convergence rates necessarily deteriorate exponentially with input dimension. poliomyelitis, acute flaccid paralysis, and myocarditis. These viruses have conserved cloverleaf-shaped RNA secondary structures at the extreme 5\u2032 end of their genomes, which are crucial for assembling viral and host proteins, such as 3CD and PCBP2, into functional ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes required for genome replication. However, the high-resolution structures and mechanisms of these cloverleaf RNAs have largely remained unknown. Recently, we determined the crystal structures of five cloverleaf RNAs from different enteroviral species, revealing a highly conserved H-type four-way junction fold that positions the 3CD and PCBP2 binding sites far apart. The conserved features observed in these structures, including a long-range A\u2022C\u2022U base triple, enabled us to predict structural models for other enteroviruses via homology modeling, yielding models similar to the experimental structures. Our structure-guided binding analyses, using recombinantly purified full-length human PCBP2 and viral 3C proteins, along with the crystal structures of the cloverleaf-3C complexes, offered further insights into how these viruses assemble RNP complexes for their genome replication within host cells. Moreover, we demonstrated that antisense oligonucleotides could block high-affinity PCBP2-binding sites, highlighting the potential to develop therapeutics targeting this replication platform for enteroviral infections. He\u2019s always been that way, and he has never understood the whole phenomenon of smiling in pictures, although he is a very happy guy. One night in middle school he stayed up under the covers with a flashlight and a DiscMan, listening to Reba McEntire\u2019s 'That\u2019s the Night that the Lights Went Out in Georgia' on repeat until the DiscMan ran out of batteries. That night he became a songwriter, although he didn\u2019t actually write a song until years later. After high school he spent a few years distracting himself from having to gather up the courage to do what he knew he had to do.\r\n\r\nEventually he found his way to a writing degree, and then a teaching degree. He wrote most days like his life depended on it, all sorts of things, not just songs, but songs too. He fell in love with teaching high school English, which was fantastic because he never thought he\u2019d actually come to truly love it. His students were fierce and unstoppable forces of noise and curiosity, and for all that they took from him in sleep and sense, they gave him a hundred times back in sparks and humility. \r\n\r\nAll the while he was also playing truckloads of music. There was one weekend where he flew to LA while grading essays on the plane, played two shows, and then flew back home, still grading essays, and woke up to teach at 5 am on Monday morning. It was around this time he started wondering if such a life was sustainable.\r\n\r\nAlas, music, the tour life, was a constant raccoon scratching at the back door. Jeffrey spent nights on end sitting up in bed, and then sitting on the front porch, staring off into the dark, wondering if he could bear to leave teaching to go on tour full time. Eventually his brain caught up with what his guts had known for months. With tears in his eyes he announced to his students that he wouldn\u2019t be back the following year, and that he didn\u2019t feel right hollering at them to chase their dreams at all cost if he wasn\u2019t going to do the same.\r\n\r\nJeffrey Martin tours full time now. He is always making music, and he is always coming through your town.
