SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. It was curated by Abigail Staub\, PhD Candidate\, Interdepartmental Program in Mediterranean Art & Archaeology.\n\nAnna Bonnell Freidin\, U-M associate professor of history\, will talk about \"Healing the Womb: Uterine Amulets in the Roman World\" (https://events.umich.edu/event/142418) on January 16.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stamping and Stomping: community inspired relief prints
DESCRIPTION:Currently based in Ann Arbor\, Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker born in Lima\, Peru. Paloma attended art college in Mexico\, where she came face to face with printmaking during her first year at the Facultad de Artes Plásticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa\, Veracruz. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers\, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997\, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration\, social in-visibility\, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. By offering portraits of minorities and their stories\, Nunez-Regueiro’s goal is to create supportive communities for those who need to feel rooted in their geographical space and their present time. \n\nNúñez-Regueiro work is closely related to her experiences of living abroad — the impermanence\, the precarious construction of one's present and even less of one’s future. It is about the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. She is an incessantly positive artist and she profoundly believes in art as a tool to create the social change that can lead us to thoughtful actions\, and the bettering of ourselves and our communities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tukilile Vaa
DESCRIPTION:Kaloki Nyamai is a multidisciplinary artist based in Nairobi. His practice explores Kenya's histories and collective memory\, blending Kamba traditions with contemporary narratives. Using acrylic paint\, rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, his free-hanging immersive works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation. For his U-M project\, Nyamai will present one large unstretched piece and two framed paintings at the Institute for the Humanities\, as well as a second free-hanging work at the U-M Museum of Art.\n\nThe physicality of his complex constructions inspire wonder in the viewer. The works are vast in scale\, embedded with stories\, where past and future merge both poetically and conceptually. In each composition\, the artist proposes a powerful alternative to the flatness of singular narratives of Kenyan history and identity presented as the definitive postcolonial account. He likens the formal act of stitching to symbolically unifying a wounded or fractured community.\n\nNyamai founded the Kamene Cultural & Research Center in Nairobi\, a creative and collaborative hub dedicated to the preservation\, promotion\, and innovation of African cultural practices.\n\nAbout the artist:\nKaloki Nyamai (*1985 in Kitui\, Kenya) is a multidisciplinary artist working with installation\, painting\, and sculpture based in Nairobi. From an early age\, his mother introduced him to painting and taught him to draw\, fostering an ever-lasting interest in art throughout his life. He often finds inspiration in his grandmother’s stories of the Kamba people\, a Bantu ethnic group of eastern Kenya. Using materials like acrylic paint\, sisal rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, Nyamai’s free-hanging pieces evoke the healing of historical wounds and a collective yearning for renewal. His works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation\, creating cohesive\, immersive experiences where past\, present\, and future converge poetically.\n\nNyamai studied Interior Design at the Buruburu Institute Of Fine Arts (BIFA) and then pursued painting after working in other creative fields. His large-scale paintings and mixed-media installations intricately explore historical narratives\, examining their resonance in the present. Nyamai has shown his work across the globe in solo exhibitions at the Norval Foundation\, Cape Town (2024)\; James Cohan Gallery\, New York (2024)\; Galerie Barbara Thumm\, Berlin (2023 and 2022)\; SEPTIEME Gallery\, Paris (2019)\, and other venues. In 2023\, he featured part of his series Dining in Chaos in the “Unlimited” section at Art Basel in Basel. He has participated in group exhibitions and biennials\, most recently at the Sharjah Biennial 16\, Sharjah (2025)\; The Völklinger Hütte\, Völklingen (2024)\; the Kenyan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale\, Venice (2022)\; and the Dakar Biennale (2022). His works are part of numerous private and institutional collections around the world\, such as the Dallas Art Museum\, the Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art\, and the Arthur Primas Museum.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Jian Kang\, Professor & Associate Chair for Research\, Biostatistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Deep generative models\, such as Variational Autoencoders (VAE) and diffusion probabilistic models\, have transformed high-dimensional data modeling. However\, these approaches often rely on variational approximations or computationally intensive ordinary differential equation (ODE) solvers\, trading exact Bayesian inference for scalability. In this talk\, I present the Bayesian Deep Noise Neural Network (B-DeepNoise)\, a framework originally developed for density regression that possesses inherent yet under-explored generative capabilities. Unlike standard Bayesian neural networks that place priors only on network weights\, the B-DeepNoise framework injects stochastic noise into every hidden layer of a deep architecture. We show that this construction is mathematically equivalent to a deep hierarchical latent variable model\, yielding rich conditional distributions through layer-wise noise propagation. By exploiting piecewise-linear activation functions\, specifically ReLU function\, we derive a closed-form Gibbs sampling algorithm that enables asymptotically exact posterior inference\, avoiding the approximation errors commonly associated with variational methods. I will demonstrate how this framework unifies three closely related tasks: (1) uncertainty quantification in regression\, (2) density regression for complex conditional distributions\, and (3) extensions to generative modeling\, where layer-wise noise injection enables flexible sample generation and data imputation. These results bridge flexible deep learning architectures with rigorous Bayesian inference and computational statistics\, providing a principled approach to density learning and generative modeling.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 2): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 2 Curatorial Statement\n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Sally Clegg (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Kim Karlsrud (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtists Sally Clegg and Kim Karlsrud wrap the Division Street pillars in highly site-specific ornament unearthed from the overlooked margins of Ann Arbor. On the Courtyard pillar\, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road\, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar\, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich’s famous “rock” to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form. \n\nSally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock\nSentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950’s\, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest\, creativity\, and ritual\, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as “Fordite” (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called ‘Detroit agate’)\, Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers\, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed\, sculpted\, sealed\, assembled\, and macro-photographed\, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems\, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice. \n\nKim Karlsrud: What Amasses\nWhat Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed\, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution\, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement\, expression\, coherence\, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged\, photographed\, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial. \nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nSally Clegg \nSally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham\, Massachusetts. Her studio practice is rooted in sculpture and expanded printmaking\, stemming from a fascination with human efforts to make meaning from our relationships to objects. Clegg integrates history\, popular culture\, literature and philosophy as material for artmaking\, leveraging personal anecdote and humor to reveal the complexity\, absurdity\, and theoretical richness at play in our connections to things and to ourselves. \n\nClegg holds an MFA in Art from The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design\, and a BA in Art & English from Goucher College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally\, and her work can be found in permanent collections at Yale University\, The New York Public Library\, and elsewhere. Her artwork and writing has appeared in ASAP/Journal\, BOMB Magazine\, Sculpture Magazine\, and Hyperallergic. She is a lecturer in Art & Design at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\n\nKim Karlsrud \nKim Karlsrud is the co-founder of Commonstudio\, a collaborative creative practice that develops socio-ecological and spatial interventions\, installations\, and initiatives working with and within urban landscapes. Her work explores the space between art and design\, and is grounded in the concept of the “commons\,” that which is shared\, as well as that which is ordinary\, banal\, and commonplace.\n\nKarlsrud completed her undergraduate degree in Product Design from Otis College of Art and Design and an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan. She is currently an Assistant Visiting Professor in the College of Design at the University of Oregon\, teaching across Art and Landscape Architecture departments. She jointly received the 2014-15 Prince Charitable Trust Rome Prize in Landscape Architecture\, was a 2017 resident at the Headlands Center for the Arts\, and is the 2025-26 Fuller Fieldscape Fellow. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Beyond “better tech”: Why the bow spread (or didn’t) in North America
DESCRIPTION:The adoption and spread of bow and arrow technology in North America reflects a complex interplay of ecological and social factors: While environmental variables such as wood availability and prey diversity / behavior were surely important\, demographic and cultural variables were equally or more influential. Parsing the relative effects of these factors and understanding interactions among them requires a clear view of the timing and nature of bow use across North America’s diverse geography. This talk explores adoption of the bow in North America from two perspectives. First\, I’ll present evidence for the bow’s earliest appearance\, use in conjunction with other projectile technologies\, and effects on economic and other systems in several North American ecoregions. Second\, I'll present a novel model of technological investment (uptake) that considers effects of people’s social roles: Whether people are craft specialists or do-it-yourselfer tool producers–users affects rates of adoption. This hypothesis has global-scale implications\, which I’ll demonstrate through regional case studies. I’ll argue that adoption depended not just on the bow's inherent utility but also on how the technology was produced\, shared\, used\, and valued in different economic systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Determinants of Norm Compliance: Moral Similarity and Group Identification
DESCRIPTION:What determines whether someone complies with a social norm? The social identity approach offers a mechanism for norm compliance: a person who feels similar to a group identifies more with that group and\, in turn\, complies with the group’s norms. Using an experiment\, we test whether similarity in values increases identification and adherence to a group rule. To do so\, we varied the similarity/dissimilarity between the values of an individual and members of a social group and measured group identification and rule compliance. We find that similarity in values increased group identification\, and group identification increased rule compliance. We show that this behavior change was due to increased group norm sensitivity rather than changes in norms to follow rules when they come from similar or dissimilar groups. We advance the study of social identity by establishing a causal pathway between group identification and behavior change. We also contribute to the management literature by showing that aligning organizational values with those of the workforce is a viable and implementable mechanism for increasing policy and guideline adherence.

SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:QMSS Winter 2026 Welcome (Back) Lunch with Family Feud Trivia!
DESCRIPTION:Join the Quantitative Methods in the Social Science (QMSS) program for a fun welcome back for the Winter 2026 semester with free food from Pita Way and a chance to win some U-M-themed prizes in the form of a casual\, bar trivia-style Family Feud game to spark conversation (no participation in the trivia is required to attend!)! First\, you can participate by completing a survey full of fun questions about being a college student at the University of Michigan (https://myumi.ch/15e7r). Then\, join us for free food\, music\, and a chance to win some Michigan-themed prizes with friends and peers at your tables in a casual\, bar trivia-style version of Family Feud!\n\nThis version of Family Feud is a little different from the classic game show with Steve Harvey. In our event\, we will drop questions off at your tables\, and all tables can work together to come up with what YOU think the most popular answers from the survey were (keeping in mind what you responded if you filled out the survey beforehand!). Then\, you'll submit your responses to our host\, and points will be awarded to teams who guess the correct responses\, with more points for their correct order. The team(s) with the most points by the end of all rounds will get a chance to win U-M-branded gear! Fun\, easy\, and a great way to get to know your QMSS community over free food! (Also\, no participation in the Family Feud trivia is required! You can simply drop in whenever you can for the free food and QMSS company!)\n\nThis event is open to all U-M students\, regardless of their affiliation with QMSS! Please feel free to share this event (and the questionnaire: https://myumi.ch/15e7r!) with your friends - we simply ask that you RSVP by Wednesday\, January 14th so we can get a proper estimate for our food and prize orders!\n\nIf you have any questions\, please don't hesitate to reach out to Caitlin at qmss.program@umich.edu! SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Exterior Cyclic Polytopes and Convexity of Amplituhedra (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:We introduce a new polytope called the exterior cyclic polytope. Our motivation comes from particle physics\, and in particular from a semialgebraic set called the amplituhedron which lives in a Grassmannian Gr(k\, r) and appears in calculations of particle scattering. \n\nThe exterior cyclic polytope is defined as the convex hull of the amplituhedron in the ambient Plücker space of Gr(k\, r). We describe its face structure and facets\, which in the case k=2 are controlled by a matroid called the hyperconnectivity matroid. Furthermore\, we describe the dual of the k=2 and r=4 polytope in terms of the twist map of Marsh and Scott\, and use this to define a notion of dual amplituhedron. This is joint work with Elia Mazzucchelli.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Metric lines in Carnot groups
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Among nilpotent Lie groups\, Carnot groups form a particularly important subclass\, with the Heisenberg group being the most well-known example. Carnot groups admit a sub-Riemannian structure. Thus\, to broaden the context\, a sub-Riemannian geodesic is a local arc-length-minimizing curve. A natural question is: What are the conditions for a geodesic to be a global minimizer? A curve is called a metric line if it is a globally minimizing geodesic\; an alternative term is “an isometric embedding of the real line.” The talk is devoted to presenting the results and ideas that inspired me to formulate a conjecture classifying metric lines in Carnot groups\, as well as the results obtained in this direction. \n\nContact: AIM Seminar Organizers

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Beyond Documentary Art: Russian Poetry and Radical Regimes of Truth
DESCRIPTION:In the contemporary era of post-truth politics\, documentary art forms that seek to redefine the meaning and authority of truth have acquired renewed significance. This lecture examines the development of documentary poetry in Russian literature.\n\nIn the 2000s and 2010s\, Russian poetry saw an intensive turn toward documentary forms based on interviews with real people\, court records\, media quotations\, and historical documents. Such poetry has typically adopted a pronounced anti-totalitarian stance\, aiming to expose the narratives of Kremlin propaganda as well as entrenched clichés of public consciousness. A comparable surge of interest in documentary and reportage-based writing occurred in the 1920s\, when left-wing writers after the Bolshevik Revolution—including Vladimir Mayakovsky and Nikolai Aseev—sought to record society’s movement toward communism through what was known as the “literature of fact.” At the same time\, unofficial poets\, excluded from publication\, depicted the darker dimensions of Soviet life and human experience.\nThis lecture argues that contemporary documentary poetry is genealogically closer not to Soviet “literature of fact\,” but to the unofficial poetic traditions of the Soviet era. It also proposes a new theoretical framework for understanding documentary poetry as a form that resists stable definition. This framework draws on Michel Foucault’s concept of “regimes of truth” and rethinks documentary poetry as a site where competing truth claims are produced\, contested\, and revisited.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Healing the Womb: Uterine Amulets in the Roman World
DESCRIPTION:Anna Bonnell Freidin\, U-M associate professor of history\, talks about a class of largely hematite and red jasper amulets known as \"uterine amulets\,\" contextualizing them in the daily lives of Roman women. The university holds one of the most extensive collections of uterine amulets in the world\, and a diverse selection are highlighted in the exhibit Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World (https://events.umich.edu/event/142417).\n\nFreidin's expertise centers around gender\, daily life\, and science and medicine in the Roman empire. Her 2024 monograph\, \"Birthing Romans: Childbearing and Its Risks in Imperial Rome\,\" examines how pregnancy and childbirth were understood\, experienced\, and managed in ancient Rome during the first three centuries of the Common Era. Materiality and the multisensory are key features of her dynamic and innovative scholarship.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: William Guenthner
DESCRIPTION:Zircon (U-Th)/He (ZHe) thermochronology has been extensively used to study the timing and rates of cooling associated with rock exhumation in active orogenic belts\, sedimentary basin evolution\, and hydrothermal fluid migration. More recently\, the ZHe thermochronometer has been used\, at times in concert with other low- to medium-temperature systems\, in Precambrian rocks to resolve “deep-time” thermal histories that span billions of years and provide insights into mid- to upper-crustal geological processes occurring at temperatures below 350 °C. Most prominently\, this deep-time approach has been used to investigate the erosional origin of the Great Unconformity surface\, a continent-scale nonconformity that separates lowermost Paleozoic strata from underlying Precambrian basement. However\, to continue extracting useful deep-time thermochronologic information with the ZHe method requires a more robust understanding of the kinetics of 4He diffusion in zircon. In this talk\, I will present results from a study of the deep-time thermal history of basement rocks in the US Upper Midwest cratonic interior. Here\, we have further investigated the origin of the Great Unconformity surface\, and the long-term (in)stability of the Laurentian craton. I will also show ongoing work to improve our understanding of the kinetics of the ZHe system with a multiple pathway approach to modeling 4He diffusion in zircon.

DESCRIPTION:The Martha Graham Dance Company celebrates its 100th anniversary season with three unique programs.\n\nMartha Graham is recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th century\, alongside Pablo Picasso\, Virginia Woolf\, Igor Stravinsky\, and Frank Lloyd Wright. She radically expanded the dance vocabulary\, rooting it in social\, psychological\, and sexual ideas\, and forever altering the art form. Her company\, celebrating its 100th season since its 1926 beginnings in a small studio at Carnegie Hall\, exemplifies its founder’s timeless and uniquely American style of dance.\n\nIn addition to her astonishing and groundbreaking choreography\, Graham was known for her collaborations with visual artists whose set designs took her works to a completely different level. For these three different performances\, the company will bring some of its original sets by the Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi\, who partnered with Graham in over 20 works including Appalachian Spring and Cave of the Heart. Together\, their choreography and set design captured the complexity of the uniquely American experience.\n\nLooking for free student tickets? All U-M undergraduate students are eligible to receive a FREE ticket to a UMS performance per academic year through the Bert’s Ticket program (a $20 value)!

SUMMARY:Performance:Django Reinhardt Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The third annual event!\n\nJoin Djangophonique and special guest Harmonious Wail for the third annual Ann Arbor Django Reinhardt festival as we celebrate the legacy of his music as it evolves.\n\nDjangophonique is an award winning band led by guitar player Andrew Brown. With over a decade of national touring experience\, Brown is no stranger to the stage and delivers every performance with personality and enigmatic charm. A true disciple of the style\, Brown has spent countless hours immersing himself in the language of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche\, and he’s joined on stage by bandmates that match his skill and passion for the material. The core group includes Tyler Rindo on clarinet\, Nick Martin on rhythm guitar\, and Jorian Olk-Szost on upright bass. In 2023\, Djangophonique began collaborating with vocalist Katie Smith\, whose playful charm and soulful delivery channel the mystery and appeal of an unplaceable era of aching and entrancing nostalgia. Djangophonique\, having already achieved the tricky feat of bringing an instrumental style of music to large stages and events\, is excited to reach even broader audiences\, bridge generational gaps\, and find greater musical heights and depths with the addition of Katie's effortlessly light yet deeply expressive voice. The result is a sound that’s unmistakable to fans of the music\, and alluring to the uninitiated—a sound that can bring the lively energy of a parisian dance hall to the quietest listening room or captivate a buzzing festival audience with a shimmering ballad. With respect for the tradition and a fearless creativity that bends the conventions of the style\, Djangophonique is keeping the Hot Club revival alive and well.\n\nHarmonious Wail hosts the wildly crazy and successful Midwest Gypsy Swing Fest held twice a year in Madison\, Wisconsin\, and is super pleased\, geeked and excited to be part of the Ann Arbor Django Reinhardt Festival and to share the stage with Djangophonique! Harmonious Wail is\;\nMaggie Delaney-Potthoff - vocalist extraordinaire and cardboard box virtuoso\, Sims Delaney-Potthoff - award-winning mandolinist and tenor guitarist from the Jethro Burns school of Django on the mandolin\, Scott Hlavenka - gypsy jazz guitar wizard from Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, and Tom Knific - internationally famous and in demand bassist.

SUMMARY:Performance:Chris Knight w/sg Matt Woods
DESCRIPTION:“a storyteller in the best traditions of Mellencamp and Springsteen” –USA Today\n\nAfter 23 years as a recording artist\, singer-songwriter Chris Knight remains boldly empowered to make music that always delivers the unflinching truth. In fact\, the man raised in Slaughters\, Kentucky uses a simple\, direct barometer to regularly check his muse: “If I can’t believe myself\, I won’t sing the song.”\n\nWhat Knight writes about is what he knows. He was raised in mining country\, so it’s no surprise that he would earn a degree in agriculture from Western Kentucky University and then work as a mine reclamation inspector and then miner’s consultant. But eventually his passion for writing songs and playing guitar\, both inspired by his musical hero\, the late John Prine\, led him to chronicle his surroundings in words and music.\n\n“I came from a big family and grew up in the woods six miles from two small towns\, so there were a lot of stories\,” he says. “There were always a lot of ideas to write about.”\n\nIt’s no wonder that Knight has single-handedly scraped a reputation as one of America’s most uncompromising and respected singer-songwriters through 23 years and nine studio albums. He’s done this minus fanfare and artifice. The native son of Slaughters\, Kentucky (population: 238) only sings songs he believes. He also speaks only when he has a potent message.

SUMMARY:Performance:Stories & Songs: An Evening with Radney Foster & Kelly Willis
DESCRIPTION:Radney Foster first gained attention as half of the duo Foster & Lloyd\, who with “Crazy Over You” became the first duo in history to top the Country charts with their debut single. He then established himself as a solo artist in the early 90’s with his critically acclaimed release Del Rio\, Texas 1959. \n\nKnown as a songwriter’s songwriter\, his songs have been recorded by everyone from Keith Urban and the Chicks to Hootie & the Blowfish and George Benson. His own hits like “Just Call Me Lonesome\,” “Nobody Wins\,” and “Texas In 1880” continue to be played on radio and by bands around the world.\n\nHis most recent project For You To See The Stars is in two parts\, a book of short fiction\, and a collection of songs to go with it. He is currently working on another book of fiction\, as well as developing film and TV projects.\n\nSinger-songwriter Kelly Willis captured critical acclaim from her first release\, with a distinctive voice that conveys both tender heartache and smoldering heat. Born in Oklahoma\, she moved often as a kid with her Army Colonel dad. She started singing professionally at 16\, fronting the rockabilly band “Kelly and the Fireballs” in the DC area\, but it soon became clear she was more of a country singer. After high school\, she moved to Austin and It wasn’t long before she got on the radar of MCA’s Tony Brown\, who signed her after an introduction by Nanci Griffith.\n\nKelly’s recording career began at a time when Nashville was experiencing a creative resurgence with the likes of Lyle Lovett\, Steve Earle\, Foster & Lloyd and The O'Kanes. She recorded three albums for MCA that were critical hits\, but it wasn’t until she left the major label restrictions behind that she came into her own with 1999’s What I Deserve for Rykodisc.\n\nThe albums Willis has made since What I Deserve have only burnished her reputation as Austin’s reigning queen of Americana\, including being inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame. When not performing her own music\, Kelly tours with Brennan Leigh and Melissa Carper as Wonder Women of Country\, in support of their 2023 self-titled EP.

SUMMARY:Performance:Mark Jewett & The Strategic Advisors w/sg Jackamo
DESCRIPTION:Country-tinged roots rock\n\nMark Jewett is an insightful Michigan native storyteller who writes songs that push the boundaries of Americana into an uncommon blend of folk\, rock\, blues\, and prog rock. In them\, listeners will hear and feel honesty\, gratitude\, and thoughtful introspection\, with doses of humor and drama to vary the pace. His songs betray the effort he makes to find just the right words\, taking cues from the likes of Randy Newman\, John Prine\, and Nick Lowe.\n\nMark assembled the band known as The Strategic Advisors to record his 2nd full length album\, “The Lucky One\,” released in 2021. The band is comprised of some of SE Michigan’s finest musicians\, including Billy Harrington (drums & vocals)\, Michael Harrington (pedal steel\, electric & acoustic guitars)\, Ken Pesick (bass)\, Amy Petty (vocals & guitar) and Dale Grisa (keyboards). The band is extremely versatile and sonically\, they make Mark's tunes span the wide space between classic folk and epic soundscapes you might expect to hear from Pink Floyd. Somehow\, it all fits together to provide an attention grabbing extravaganza.\n\nDetroit-based indie-folk band Jackamo opens. Led by sisters Alison and Tessa Wiercioch (vocals) and Jimmy Showers (guitar)\, and known for their blood harmonies\, acoustic textures\, and lyric-driven storytelling\, their sound is intimate\, nostalgic\, and always evolving.
