SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. It was curated by Abigail Staub\, PhD Candidate\, Interdepartmental Program in Mediterranean Art & Archaeology.\n\nAnna Bonnell Freidin\, U-M associate professor of history\, will talk about \"Healing the Womb: Uterine Amulets in the Roman World\" (https://events.umich.edu/event/142418) on January 16.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Aristo Sham Piano Master Class
DESCRIPTION:Pianist Aristo Sham\, winner of the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition\, will present a guest artist master class for talented piano students from the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. Presented in association with the Ann Arbor Symphony.\n\nGUEST ARTIST BIO\n\nPianist ARISTO SHAM exudes astounding intellect and a deep emotional resonance\; a cultivated sophistication and an immediately engaging presence\; a penchant to take on the great monuments of the piano repertoire and a natural\, infectious spontaneity. This makeup is fueled by a fascination with the world and its rich cultures: he was an international prodigy\, is a voracious student of wide-ranging interests\, and currently splits his time between three continents. \n\nAt the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition\, Aristo found his breakthrough moment\, taking home both the gold medal and the audience award. And the critics showered him with imaginative praise\, calling him “a marvel of deft characterization\,” “consistently authoritative\,” “a card-carrying risk taker\,” “a dapper\, aristocratic figure on stage\,” “a pianist I look forward to hearing again” (*The Dallas Morning News*\, *Gramophone*\, *Texas Classical Voice*). In just two months’ time\, he was mentioned in more than 800 news articles\, and his Cliburn performance videos were streamed 2 million times across 125 countries.\n\nAristo was featured in the 2009 documentary *The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies* on Channel 4 (UK)\, has performed for royalty including King Charles\, and was hailed by The New York Times in 2020 as an artist “whose playing combines clarity\, elegance and abundant technique.” He has concertized across Asia\, Europe\, and the United States\, with major highlights including the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle\, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under Edo de Waart\, English Chamber Orchestra under the late Sir Raymond Leppard\, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne\, and Minnesota Orchestra. His 2025–2026 debut season as Cliburn winner includes a major tour of Asia through South Korea and China\, and U.S. recitals for Aspen Music Festival\, La Jolla Music Society/The Conrad\, UCSB Arts and Lectures\, and the Skyline Piano Artist Series at Northwestern University.\n\nRecently\, he recorded and hosted the complete Brahms solo piano music on RTHK4\, Classical Radio in Hong Kong. Upcoming seasons will see the release of two albums on Platoon: a Cliburn live release\, as well as his debut studio album.\n\nAristo Sham’s mother taught piano in their Hong Kong home\, so he says: “I was enveloped in the environment of the piano even before I was born.” His parents recall his immense curiosity towards the instrument when he was a toddler and started him in lessons when he was 3. At the age of 10\, he began competing and concertizing. But he also went to regular schools\, never making the conscious decision to focus solely on the piano or his other studies\; this made the dual degree program at Harvard and the New England Conservatory a perfect fit when he went to college. He finished his Bachelor of Arts at Harvard in 2019 and master’s at NEC under Victor Rosenbaum in 2020. He then went to the Ingesund School of Music in Sweden to study with Julia Mustonen-Dahlkvist before returning to the States to earn an artist diploma at The Juilliard School with Robert McDonald and Orli Shaham. In addition to the Cliburn\, he’s a laureate of international competitions\, with first-prize wins at Young Concert Artists\, Ettlingen\, Gina Bachauer\, and Monte Carlo Music Masters.

SUMMARY:Performance:Martha Graham Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:The Martha Graham Dance Company celebrates its 100th anniversary season with three unique programs.\n\nMartha Graham is recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th century\, alongside Pablo Picasso\, Virginia Woolf\, Igor Stravinsky\, and Frank Lloyd Wright. She radically expanded the dance vocabulary\, rooting it in social\, psychological\, and sexual ideas\, and forever altering the art form. Her company\, celebrating its 100th season since its 1926 beginnings in a small studio at Carnegie Hall\, exemplifies its founder’s timeless and uniquely American style of dance.\n\nIn addition to her astonishing and groundbreaking choreography\, Graham was known for her collaborations with visual artists whose set designs took her works to a completely different level. For these three different performances\, the company will bring some of its original sets by the Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi\, who partnered with Graham in over 20 works including Appalachian Spring and Cave of the Heart. Together\, their choreography and set design captured the complexity of the uniquely American experience.\n\nLooking for free student tickets? All U-M undergraduate students are eligible to receive a FREE ticket to a UMS performance per academic year through the Bert’s Ticket program (a $20 value)!

SUMMARY:Performance:G. Love & Special Sauce - Lemonade 20th Anniversary Tour with Special Guest MAKUA
DESCRIPTION:G. Love & Special Sauce is an American Hip-Hop Blues band known for its unique fusion of hip-hop\, blues\, funk\, and soul. Formed in 1993 in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, the band originally featured Garrett Dutton\, aka G. Love\, as the lead vocalist and guitarist\, Jeffrey Clemens on drums\, and Jim Prescott on bass. The trio quickly gained attention for their laid-back\, groovy style and G. Love’s unique vocal delivery\, blending rap-like spoken word with bluesy singing.\n\nTheir debut self-titled album\, G. Love & Special Sauce\, was released in 1994 on Epic Records and included the hit single “Cold Beverage\,” which became popular on alternative radio stations and MTV\, solidifying their presence in the music scene. The band’s style has been described as\na mix of “slacker blues” and “alternative hip-hop\,” as they frequently incorporate elements of 90s hip-hop beats with classic blues rhythms.\n\nOver the years\, G. Love & Special Sauce has released numerous albums\, including Coast to Coast Motel (1995)\, Yeah\, It’s That Easy (1997)\, The Electric Mile (2001) and the GRAMMY nominated The Juice (2020). Their sound evolved to include more soul\, R&B\, and rock influences\, though they retained their laid-back vibe and clever lyrical play.
