SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stamping and Stomping: community inspired relief prints
DESCRIPTION:Currently based in Ann Arbor\, Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker born in Lima\, Peru. Paloma attended art college in Mexico\, where she came face to face with printmaking during her first year at the Facultad de Artes Plásticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa\, Veracruz. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers\, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997\, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration\, social in-visibility\, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. By offering portraits of minorities and their stories\, Nunez-Regueiro’s goal is to create supportive communities for those who need to feel rooted in their geographical space and their present time. \n\nNúñez-Regueiro work is closely related to her experiences of living abroad — the impermanence\, the precarious construction of one's present and even less of one’s future. It is about the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. She is an incessantly positive artist and she profoundly believes in art as a tool to create the social change that can lead us to thoughtful actions\, and the bettering of ourselves and our communities.

DESCRIPTION:Kaloki Nyamai is a multidisciplinary artist based in Nairobi. His practice explores Kenya's histories and collective memory\, blending Kamba traditions with contemporary narratives. Using acrylic paint\, rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, his free-hanging immersive works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation. For his U-M project\, Nyamai will present one large unstretched piece and two framed paintings at the Institute for the Humanities\, as well as a second free-hanging work at the U-M Museum of Art.\n\nThe physicality of his complex constructions inspire wonder in the viewer. The works are vast in scale\, embedded with stories\, where past and future merge both poetically and conceptually. In each composition\, the artist proposes a powerful alternative to the flatness of singular narratives of Kenyan history and identity presented as the definitive postcolonial account. He likens the formal act of stitching to symbolically unifying a wounded or fractured community.\n\nNyamai founded the Kamene Cultural & Research Center in Nairobi\, a creative and collaborative hub dedicated to the preservation\, promotion\, and innovation of African cultural practices.\n\nAbout the artist:\nKaloki Nyamai (*1985 in Kitui\, Kenya) is a multidisciplinary artist working with installation\, painting\, and sculpture based in Nairobi. From an early age\, his mother introduced him to painting and taught him to draw\, fostering an ever-lasting interest in art throughout his life. He often finds inspiration in his grandmother’s stories of the Kamba people\, a Bantu ethnic group of eastern Kenya. Using materials like acrylic paint\, sisal rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, Nyamai’s free-hanging pieces evoke the healing of historical wounds and a collective yearning for renewal. His works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation\, creating cohesive\, immersive experiences where past\, present\, and future converge poetically.\n\nNyamai studied Interior Design at the Buruburu Institute Of Fine Arts (BIFA) and then pursued painting after working in other creative fields. His large-scale paintings and mixed-media installations intricately explore historical narratives\, examining their resonance in the present. Nyamai has shown his work across the globe in solo exhibitions at the Norval Foundation\, Cape Town (2024)\; James Cohan Gallery\, New York (2024)\; Galerie Barbara Thumm\, Berlin (2023 and 2022)\; SEPTIEME Gallery\, Paris (2019)\, and other venues. In 2023\, he featured part of his series Dining in Chaos in the “Unlimited” section at Art Basel in Basel. He has participated in group exhibitions and biennials\, most recently at the Sharjah Biennial 16\, Sharjah (2025)\; The Völklinger Hütte\, Völklingen (2024)\; the Kenyan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale\, Venice (2022)\; and the Dakar Biennale (2022). His works are part of numerous private and institutional collections around the world\, such as the Dallas Art Museum\, the Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art\, and the Arthur Primas Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Opening December 8\, 2025 and running through January 2026\nGalleryDAAS| Haven Hall| G648| Monday - Friday 10-4pm\n\nThis exhibit showcases stories of resistance\, resilience\, and hope\, in the face of mass incarceration\, police violence\, immigrant detention\, and systematic racial criminalization. Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. The work presented in this exhibit represents only a sliver of the extensive research\, art\, advocacy\, public engagement\, and other products generated by the Carceral State Project over the years.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  Dynamic treatment regimens (DTRs) are sequential decisions over one or more stages that tailor treatments to individual characteristics and their intermediate outcomes. For many chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes (T2D)\, benefit-risk tradeoff is usually an important concern for decision making in the sense that treatments with a higher benefit may lead to an increased risk of adverse outcomes (e.g.\, more intensive insulin treatment may lead to more hypoglycemia events). It is thus desirable to learn the optimal DTRs while constraining the risk to be within a tolerable range. In this talk\, we propose a learning framework for this purpose.  The framework allows the risk constraint to be imposed either at each stage for an acute risk outcome\, or cumulatively over all the stages for a long-term risk outcome. Using surrogate loss functions in empirical risk minimization\, the optimal DTRs are obtained by solving a sequence of weighted support vector machine problems in a backward fashion.  Theoretically\, we show that the estimated DTRs are Fisher consistent and we further provide the convergence rates for the value and risk functions associated with the estimated DTRs. Lastly\, the proposed method is demonstrated via simulation studies and an application to a two-stage clinical trial for treating T2D.

Opinions range from the view that oak species hybridize relatively rarely to the view that related oaks form syngameons\, near-freely interbreeding complexes of species. Understanding species boundaries and gene flow in oaks is essential to conserving the ca. 425 global oak species on which humans and hundreds to thousands of arthropod\, fungus\, vertebrate\, and plant species depend. In this talk\, I provide an overview of how our understanding of oak species boundaries and hybrids has grown from the early 19th Century to today. Molecular data from the past two decades show that individual oaks exhibit a wide range of mixed-species ancestry\, with as many as 20% of individuals averaged across studies admixed at a level of 10% or higher. This means that hybridization is quite common in many oak species\, and some of the resulting gene flow may play a role in population adaptation and species migration. Nonetheless\, oaks form genetically distinct species\, and that species diversity is crucial to the function of forests\, savannas\, and other oak-dominated forests across much of the northern hemisphere. The lecture will include both historic and recent research.

DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 2 Curatorial Statement\n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Sally Clegg (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Kim Karlsrud (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtists Sally Clegg and Kim Karlsrud wrap the Division Street pillars in highly site-specific ornament unearthed from the overlooked margins of Ann Arbor. On the Courtyard pillar\, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road\, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar\, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich’s famous “rock” to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form. \n\nSally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock\nSentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950’s\, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest\, creativity\, and ritual\, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as “Fordite” (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called ‘Detroit agate’)\, Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers\, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed\, sculpted\, sealed\, assembled\, and macro-photographed\, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems\, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice. \n\nKim Karlsrud: What Amasses\nWhat Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed\, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution\, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement\, expression\, coherence\, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged\, photographed\, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial. \nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nSally Clegg \nSally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham\, Massachusetts. Her studio practice is rooted in sculpture and expanded printmaking\, stemming from a fascination with human efforts to make meaning from our relationships to objects. Clegg integrates history\, popular culture\, literature and philosophy as material for artmaking\, leveraging personal anecdote and humor to reveal the complexity\, absurdity\, and theoretical richness at play in our connections to things and to ourselves. \n\nClegg holds an MFA in Art from The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design\, and a BA in Art & English from Goucher College. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Predicting RNA Secondary/Tertiary Structure: Thermodynamic and Bioinformatic Approaches
DESCRIPTION:Predicting RNA structure and stability from sequence requires a deep integration of experimental thermodynamics with computational modeling. Research in the Znosko lab has systematically quantified the energetics of fundamental RNA motifs (hairpins\, internal loops\, mismatches\, and non-canonical pairs) using optical melting. These data have expanded and refined nearest-neighbor parameters\, improving the accuracy of RNA secondary-structure prediction. Complementary algorithmic development and computational studies have enabled the incorporation of these parameters into predictive tools.  Bioinformatic analyses have evaluated sequence–structure relationships across large datasets and identified sequence families that exhibit similar structural features\, informing both modeling and design. Together\, these efforts bridge experiment and computation to advance a more predictive framework for RNA folding\, with implications for understanding natural RNA function and engineering RNA-based systems.

DESCRIPTION:Vinson Lam performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ASC Event.  Big Text Analysis in IsiXhosa: Religion\, Politics\, and Nationhood in the IsiXhosa Press\, 1870-1890
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores how African language digital archives and new methods of computational text analysis can bring fresh insights for reconstructing African intellectual lineages and tracing historical developments.\n\nThe talk details the creation of a digital archive of the earliest African language newspapers in South Africa and shows how Xhosa language computational text analysis can be used to bring a ‘distant reading’ to this archive. Where much previous work has focused on individual African thinkers\, this approach allows us to see a collective intellectual community co-creating foundational ideas that grounded new intellectual and political responses to colonialism. I demonstrate this by examining changing discourse among early Xhosa intellectuals\, journalists\, and political activists writing in these papers. I examine how early discourse from missionary-educated Xhosa communities shifted from a focus on spiritual concerns to political engagement\, revealing a surprisingly early reorientation from ‘other worldly’ to ‘worldly’ concerns and sources of power. I also examine how competing conceptions of nationhood emerged in the Xhosa language\, and trace how these conceptions rose and fell in these early years.\n   \nJonathan Schoots is a historical and political sociologist specializing in the study of colonialism and empire\, political movements\, and knowledge production\, with a particular focus on South Africa. His research employs both qualitative and computational methods to explore conditions that facilitate the emergence of new political frameworks. His work has focused on the intellectuals\, organizations\, and newspapers that played a pivotal role in shaping political thought and practice during the emergence of African nationalism in South Africa.\n   \nSchoots is a lecturer (assistant professor) in the Department of Sociology at Wits University. He has published work in theory and society\, poetics\, development in practice and other venues. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (2021).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Specialization\, the Division of Labor\, and Explorations in Property Distribution
DESCRIPTION:Specialization is a process where individuals\, groups\, or organizations focus on one task or area of knowledge. It drives economic development\, organizational growth\, and increases in social complexity\, capacity\, and heterogeneity. Discussions of specialization in the social sciences contain an undocumented but significant ambiguity. The term specialization is used to refer to both the division of labor\, in which tasks are divided into complementary processes or components\, and differentiation\, in which units choose tasks that are different from each other. Despite a long history in which the two types of coordination are used interchangeably under the term ‘specialization\,’ we demonstrate that the division of labor and differentiation thrive in opposite social conditions. Using computational models\, we found that variation in basic social conditions had opposite effects for the two different coordination processes: increasing social density encouraged the division of labor and inhibited differentiation and increasing the number of specializations encouraged differentiation and inhibited the division of labor. Since specialization is central to economic development\, there is value in understanding the conditions that foster it. We show that encouraging specialization requires disambiguating the two distinct types of coordination.

DESCRIPTION:Okada and Stembridge's Pfaffian formula for the enumeration of families of nonintersecting paths with fixed starting points and unfixed ending points has been widely used to resolve many challenging problems in enumerative combinatorics. In this talk\, we present a new formula that complements Okada and Stembridge's Pfaffian formula. The combinatorial interpretation of the new formula gives a reflection principle for nonintersecting paths. It implies that the enumeration of families of nonintersecting paths with unfixed ending points can be resolved by enumerating families of nonintersecting paths with fixed ending points instead. Using this formula\, we also show that the enumeration of lozenge tilings of a large family of regions with free boundaries can be deduced from those without free boundaries and present several applications of this result.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar:  Relativistic Initial Data Sets with Prescribed Asymptotics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  In General Relativity\, Einstein's equation may be viewed as a second-order system of nonlinear PDE's for the Lorentzian metric on (n+1)-dimensional spacetime that admits an initial value formulation. The required initial data is comprised of a (usually complete) n-dimensional Riemannian manifold equipped with a symmetric (0\,2)-tensor\, respectively representing a spatially global \"instant in time\" and the \"initial velocity\" of the metric. The Gauss-Codazzi equations imply that not every such pair is admissible\, however\, and a working initial data set must satisfy certain nonlinear elliptic PDE’s dubbed the constraint equations. In this talk\, I will discuss recent work with several collaborators on the construction of working asymptotically flat initial data sets in which various asymptotic features of physical interest can be prescribed.\n\nContact:  AIM Seminar Organizers

At the same time\, thousands of Balkan Roma have emigrated westward due to deteriorating living conditions\, racist threats and increased violence. In this heightened atmosphere of xenophobia\, entrenched stereotypes have arisen amidst deportations and harassment. Roma\, as Europe’s largest minority and one of its quintessential “historic others\,” face the paradox that they are revered for their music yet reviled as people. DESCRIPTION:The CFT data -- scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients -- of high dimension operators contains valuable information about the theory and its deformations\, but is traditionally unobtainable outside of integrable models. We will review how the fuzzy sphere regulator allows numeric access to much of this data in the 3d Ising model\, and show how to exploit the emergent conformal generators of the theory to significantly improve it.  We discuss some of the applications of this data\, including tests of the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis and the spectrum of masses of the QFTs in the vicinity of the critical point.

DESCRIPTION:Mobility of tectonic plates has resulted in amalgamations of supercontinents every ~700 million years for at least the latter half of Earth history.  Prior to Pangea (300-150 Ma)\, the preceding giant landmasses of Rodinia (1000-700 Ma) and Nuna (1600-1300 Ma) have been increasingly resolved in recent years by the combined efforts of chronostratigraphy\, paleomagnetism\, and kinematic synthesis.  An earlier supercontinent Kenorland (ca. 2600-2200 Ma) has been postulated but heretofore only visualized in general aspects.  As reconstructions progress deeper in time\, one must be increasingly cautious of standard assumptions such as an axial-dipolar geomagnetic field\, the total inventory of continental crust\, and even whether plate tectonics existed.  Mindful of these caveats\, I present a viable kinematic model of Kenorland’s assembly\, tenure\, and breakup through the Archean-Proterozoic interval that also witnessed the Great Oxidation Event\, possible Snowball Earth ice ages\, and eukaryotic development.

Leonard is a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and an associate professor of Native American Studies at the University of California\, Riverside. Drawing from his training in linguistics and experience in community-based language programs\, he works to build capacity for Native American language reclamation\, a community-driven and decolonial form of language work that includes but goes beyond what is widely referred to as language revitalization. He also co-developed the Natives4Linguistics project\, which promotes Native American research protocols and intellectual tools for doing linguistic science.\n\nColloquium Title: Indigenous Peoples\, Ethics\, and Linguistic Data: Approaches to Decolonizing Linguistics\n\nAbstract: Despite the increasing focus on justice\, equity\, diversity\, and inclusion in the discipline of Linguistics\, members of Native American and other Indigenous communities remain underrepresented––and often report feeling unwelcome. A recurring concern is that Linguistics is not accountable to Indigenous histories\, protocols\, and ways of engaging with language communities and linguistic data. A wider issue is that colonization is endemic\, and disciplinary norms have developed accordingly.\n\nWhat changes when Native American and other Indigenous intellectual approaches serve as the baseline from which linguistic research and pedagogy are approached? Drawing from my professional experiences as a linguist\, Miami tribal member engaged in community language efforts\, and co-founder of the Natives4Linguistics project\, which aims to reimagine Linguistics through Native American ways of knowing\, I engage with this question and offer several interventions.

Dubbed “deepfakes” to reflect fake media that is difficult to distinguish from the real thing\, these technologies span the entire spectrum from political misinformation to personal harassment\, posing new challenges for individuals and society alike. How do these systems work? What risks do they introduce for trust\, safety\, and democracy? And what tools - technical\, legal\, or educational - can help us defend against their misuse? Join us for a conversation with experts in AI and sociotechnical systems as we discuss the growing impact of deepfakes and explore strategies to respond to them.\n\nWhen: January 23\, 2026\, 6:30pm - 7:30pm\nWhere: Ann Arbor District Library\, Downtown location\nRoom: 1st Floor Lobby\n\nPanelists: Rada Mihalcea\, Khalid Malik\, Cliff Lampe\n\nRada Mihalcea is the Janice M. Jenkins Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan and the Director of the Michigan Artificial Intelligence Lab. Her research interests are in natural language processing\, with a focus on multimodal processing and computational social sciences. She is an ACM Fellow\, a AAAI Fellow\, and served as ACL President (2018-2022 Vice/Past). She is the recipient of a Sarah Goddard Power award (2019) for her contributions to diversity in science\, and the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers awarded by President Obama (2009).\n\nDr. Khalid M. Malik is a Professor of Computer Science and Director of Cybersecurity at the College of Innovation and Technology\, University of Michigan–Flint\, and the co-founder of ProbeTruth. His research focuses on the integrated areas of AI\, healthcare\, and information security to design secure\, intelligent\, and decentralized decision support systems by employing multimodal\, federated\, trustworthy\, and neuro-symbolic AI. In cybersecurity\, his work emphasizes developing forensic examiners for assessing the authenticity\, integrity\, and veracity of audio\, video\, and image content\, including deepfake detection. In healthcare\, his focus includes predicting cerebrovascular and cardiovascular events using clinical text and multiple medical imaging modalities (e.g.\, DSA\, MRA). Dr. Malik’s research is supported by multiple National Science Foundation awards\, the Brain Aneurysm Foundation\, the Department of Defense\, the Department of Energy\, the Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization Innovation Hub\, and various local and global industry partners. He is the recipient of numerous accolades\, including Oakland’s Young Investigator Research Award (2018)\, the SECS Outstanding Research Award (2019)\, and the Distinguished Associate Professor Award (2021).\n\nCliff Lampe is a professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan\, where he also serves as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. His research explores the social and technical structures of large-scale technology-mediated communication\, with projects that range from the harms and benefits of social media to the use of information technology to help cities engage with the people who live in them. DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed Telegraph Quartet\, now in residency at the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, performs a recital.\n\nKnown for their technical prowess and appreciation for the history behind music\, the members of the Telegraph Quartet bring their fluid synchronicity and refined artistry to a program titled *From Countryside to Concert Hall*  – a concert that showcases how three composers adapted\, adopted\, or fully embodied folk music\, bringing the rustic and unassuming spirit of that idiom into the bright light of the concert stage. The program includes Franz Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in C Major\, op. 54\, no. 2\; Derrick Skye’s *American Mirror\, Part 1*\; and Béla Bartók’s String Quartet no. 2.\n\nHaydn’s Quartet in C Major evokes a spirit of ambition and experimentation with musical form. The intricacy and deeply expressive nature of the melodies across its four movements reflected Haydn’s engaging instincts as a composer. Composer Derrick Skye says\, \"*American Mirror* reflects on the coming together of cultures in our society\, which consists of many generations and descendants of refugees\, immigrants\, and slaves\, and how intercultural collaborations are essential to the well-being of American society.” The piece infuses influences from West African\, North African\, and Eastern European vocal techniques and ornamentations with open harmonies commonly found in Appalachian folk music. Bartók’s second quartet exhibits his immersion into what he called the “purest music” – that of the remote Hungarian countryside – a style he sought to absorb and recreate as a new form of highly complex concert music.\n\nABOUT TELEGRAPH QUARTET\nErin Chin & Joseph Maile\, violins\nPei-Ling Lin\, viola\nJeremiah Shaw\, cello\n\nThe TELEGRAPH QUARTET formed in 2013 with an equal passion for standard and contemporary chamber music repertoire. Described by the *San Francisco Chronicle* as “…an incredibly valuable addition to the cultural landscape” and “powerfully adept… with a combination of brilliance and subtlety\,” the Telegraph Quartet was awarded the prestigious 2016 Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Grand Prize at the 2014 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. A fervent champion of 20th- and 21st-century repertoire\, the Telegraph Quartet has premiered works by Osvaldo Golijov\, John Harbison\, Robert Sirota\, and Richard Festinger.\n\nIn 2023\, the Telegraph Quartet released *20th Century Vantage Points: Divergent Paths*\, the first in a trilogy of recordings on Azica Records exploring the string quartets of the first half of the 20th century – an era of music that the group has felt especially called to perform since its formation. *Divergent Paths* features two works that (to the best of the quartet’s knowledge) have never been recorded on the same album before: Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major and Arnold Schoenberg’s String Quartet no. 1 in D minor\, op. 7.
