DESCRIPTION:Flyover Country brings together physical reproductions of ephemera and other media from the underground and independent music scenes of the lower Great Lakes region\, spanning from the early 1980s to today. \n\nIn an era when both paper ephemera and digital creations are increasingly fragile and often fleeting\, this exhibit invites viewers to encounter materials not only as sources of information\, but as rare\, expressive artwork shaped by the people\, places\, and moments that produced them.\n\nThe exhibit documents how youth in rural and suburban Midwestern communities have used the tools available to them to build connection\, resilience\, and creative identity\, particularly among artists and musicians from marginalized or underrepresented groups.\n\nYou're invited to take part in drop-in art events to create your own collage-based artwork. Art supplies\, as well as some light refreshments\, will be provided during the drop-in events. SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stamping and Stomping: community inspired relief prints
DESCRIPTION:Currently based in Ann Arbor\, Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker born in Lima\, Peru. Paloma attended art college in Mexico\, where she came face to face with printmaking during her first year at the Facultad de Artes Plásticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa\, Veracruz. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers\, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997\, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration\, social in-visibility\, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. By offering portraits of minorities and their stories\, Nunez-Regueiro’s goal is to create supportive communities for those who need to feel rooted in their geographical space and their present time. \n\nNúñez-Regueiro work is closely related to her experiences of living abroad — the impermanence\, the precarious construction of one's present and even less of one’s future. It is about the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. She is an incessantly positive artist and she profoundly believes in art as a tool to create the social change that can lead us to thoughtful actions\, and the bettering of ourselves and our communities.

DESCRIPTION:Kaloki Nyamai is a multidisciplinary artist based in Nairobi. His practice explores Kenya's histories and collective memory\, blending Kamba traditions with contemporary narratives. Using acrylic paint\, rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, his free-hanging immersive works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation. For his U-M project\, Nyamai will present one large unstretched piece and two framed paintings at the Institute for the Humanities\, as well as a second free-hanging work at the U-M Museum of Art.\n\nThe physicality of his complex constructions inspire wonder in the viewer. The works are vast in scale\, embedded with stories\, where past and future merge both poetically and conceptually. In each composition\, the artist proposes a powerful alternative to the flatness of singular narratives of Kenyan history and identity presented as the definitive postcolonial account. He likens the formal act of stitching to symbolically unifying a wounded or fractured community.\n\nNyamai founded the Kamene Cultural & Research Center in Nairobi\, a creative and collaborative hub dedicated to the preservation\, promotion\, and innovation of African cultural practices.\n\nAbout the artist:\nKaloki Nyamai (*1985 in Kitui\, Kenya) is a multidisciplinary artist working with installation\, painting\, and sculpture based in Nairobi. From an early age\, his mother introduced him to painting and taught him to draw\, fostering an ever-lasting interest in art throughout his life. He often finds inspiration in his grandmother’s stories of the Kamba people\, a Bantu ethnic group of eastern Kenya. Using materials like acrylic paint\, sisal rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, Nyamai’s free-hanging pieces evoke the healing of historical wounds and a collective yearning for renewal. His works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation\, creating cohesive\, immersive experiences where past\, present\, and future converge poetically.\n\nNyamai studied Interior Design at the Buruburu Institute Of Fine Arts (BIFA) and then pursued painting after working in other creative fields. His large-scale paintings and mixed-media installations intricately explore historical narratives\, examining their resonance in the present. Nyamai has shown his work across the globe in solo exhibitions at the Norval Foundation\, Cape Town (2024)\; James Cohan Gallery\, New York (2024)\; Galerie Barbara Thumm\, Berlin (2023 and 2022)\; SEPTIEME Gallery\, Paris (2019)\, and other venues. In 2023\, he featured part of his series Dining in Chaos in the “Unlimited” section at Art Basel in Basel. He has participated in group exhibitions and biennials\, most recently at the Sharjah Biennial 16\, Sharjah (2025)\; The Völklinger Hütte\, Völklingen (2024)\; the Kenyan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale\, Venice (2022)\; and the Dakar Biennale (2022). His works are part of numerous private and institutional collections around the world\, such as the Dallas Art Museum\, the Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art\, and the Arthur Primas Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Opening December 8\, 2025 and running through January 2026\nGalleryDAAS| Haven Hall| G648| Monday - Friday 10-4pm\n\nThis exhibit showcases stories of resistance\, resilience\, and hope\, in the face of mass incarceration\, police violence\, immigrant detention\, and systematic racial criminalization. Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. The work presented in this exhibit represents only a sliver of the extensive research\, art\, advocacy\, public engagement\, and other products generated by the Carceral State Project over the years.

DESCRIPTION:Description: The causes of biodiversity patterns at the largest scales of time and space remain poorly understood. In this talk\, I examine the relationship between these dynamic patterns of biological diversity and rates of evolutionary diversification\, and I evaluate progress in linking microevolutionary processes to speciation and extinction at macroevolutionary scales. I argue that biodiversity dynamics across space\, time\, and clades reflect an underlying causal unity shaped by ecological modulation of diversification. However\, further progress will require much deeper integration of traditional microevolutionary biology with population ecology and paleobiology.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Rapping Minority-ness: Rap as Vernacular Theory in China
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to recognize ethnic minority rappers as cultural theorists in China? This talk approaches minority rap\, with a particular focus on Tibetan rap\, not merely as music but as a vernacular theory of life emerging from the margins. Caught in a paradox\, ethnic minorities are hyper-visible as objects of state governance\, yet rarely heard in shaping the terms through which they are understood and represented. Drawing on lyrics\, artist interviews\, documentaries\, and audience commentary\, Dr. Tso will show how rappers reconfigure marginality into epistemic advantage\, producing alternative vocabularies and frameworks for understanding minority experiences\, aspirations\, and social relations. In this reconfiguration\, minority-ness is reimagined as immediate\, relational\, and generative. By foregrounding the analytical insights of these vernacular thinkers\, this talk illuminates new ways of thinking about power\, voice\, and belonging in China.\n   \n   Bendi Tso is a sociocultural anthropologist whose work focuses on borderlands\, nationalism\, ethnicity\, and oral traditions in China. Her research draws on ethnographic methods to examine China’s ethnic minorities beyond the dominant analytical lens of ethnicity. She is currently developing a book project that explores how disparate Tibetan subgroups on the Sino-Tibetan borderland negotiate essentialized notions of Tibetanness in a landscape marked by ambiguity and transition. She is a postdoctoral fellow at the Kenneth G. Lieberthal and Richard H. Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan.\n   \n   In-person talk only.

DESCRIPTION:Meghan Wysocki & Joe Antrim perform on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\n\nIn 1618\, colonial Mexican officials established a city called Córdoba along the highway between Mexico City and Veracruz to secure silver shipments from attacks by African maroons. Strikingly\, they described the city as both a “frontier” and a “frontier fort.” This talk reads the new city as a translation of the technologies of war from the frontier to the center and traces a discursive shift from just war to economic circulation that accompanied it.\n\nDaniel Nemser is a 2025-26 John Rich Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and  Associate Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis talk will describe research examining how parents and neighborhood disadvantage are related to brain function. The talk will focus on a population ecological neuroscience approach to understanding how poverty “gets under the skin” to impact brain development. Specifically\, the talk will describe research linking parenting and neighborhood risk to neural function in emotion and regulatory regions of the brain using representative samples with enrichment for exposure to disadvantage. Additionally\, the talk will cover current and future directions using novel designs (experimental\, twin) to get closer to causal models.\n\nBio:\nLuke Williamson Hyde is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan. He received his PhD in Clinical and Developmental Psychology with a concentration in cognitive neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hyde’s research focuses on how adversity and inequality impact the developing child from the preschool years through early adulthood\, as well as how these experiences shape brain and behavioral development. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Derived Fun: Towards Homotopical Algebra
DESCRIPTION:Derived functors play a central role in commutative algebra\, organizing algebraic computations through exact sequences and homological methods. This talk begins with a brief conceptual revisit of derived functors in homological algebra\, and then examines Kähler differentials of commutative rings as a motivating example for why we want derived functors beyond abelian categories. \n\nTo address this problem\, we trace Dan Quillen’s insight that homotopical methods provide an ideal framework for defining derived functors in nonabelian settings. Along the way\, we encounter his definition of model categories\, which have since become central tools in modern homotopy theory. From this perspective\, the cotangent complex arises as a derived replacement for Kähler differentials. We will outline the construction of the cotangent complex and discuss some of its powerful applications to deformation theory. Time permitting\, I will say something about how the homotopical viewpoint reconciles with homological algebra.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Topology\, graphs\, and data
DESCRIPTION:This talk will be an introduction to the emerging area of discrete\nhomotopy theory\, which applies intuitions and techniques from the\ncontinuous setting to discrete objects such as graphs. It has found a\nbroad range of applications\, both within and outside mathematics\,\nincluding to matroid theory\, hyperplane arrangements\, and data analysis.\n\nI will discuss two of my own contributions to discrete homotopy theory\,\none more theoretical and one more applied. The first is a proof\, joint\nwith D. Carranza (Compos. Math.\, 2024)\, of the conjecture by E. Babson\,\nH. Barcelo\, M. de Longueville\, and R. Laubenbacher that discrete\nhomotopy groups can be topologically realized. The second\, joint with N.\nKershaw (arXiv:2506.15020)\, builds on this result and introduces a new\nmethod of data analysis\, which we call persistent discrete homology. We\nshow that in addition to its utility for clustering\, it can detect other\ngeometric features of a data set. It is furthermore highly noise\nresistant\, and as such provides a powerful alternative to the usual\nmethods of (unsupervised) machine learning\, especially in areas subject\nto high uncertainty\, such as seismology or crime linkage.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series | Private Violence and the Law in Late Chosŏn Korea
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person and virtually on Zoom. The webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/QwX2k\n\nThis lecture examines how the Chosŏn State addressed the problem of private violence\, focusing on adultery-related homicides. While the State criminalized adultery under legal codes\, the law allowed a notable exception that justified private violence: if a husband killed his wife and her lover when caught in the act\, he could be exempt from punishment. By the late eighteenth century\, the exception was more broadly interpreted\, extending leniency to other kin\, such as sons and brothers-in-law\, and loosening the requirement that the killing occur immediately at the scene. Did these developments reflect a weakening of state authority\, or a different logic of governance? The lecture argues that they embodied the state’s effort to reconcile centralized legal authority with Confucian ideals of familial honor\, thereby illuminating how Chosŏn Korea negotiated the boundary between public governance and private moral obligation.\n   \nHa-kyoung Lee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the Academy of Korean Studies. Her research investigates the intersections of law\, authority\, and governance in premodern Asia\, with a particular emphasis on the legislative processes and legal practices of Chosŏn Korea (1392–1910). She is currently working on two projects: Confucian Moral Ethics\, Moral Crimes\, and the State in Chosŏn Korea (funded by the National Research Foundation\, 2025-2027) and Koreans’ Legal Literacy: Its Historical Formation and Development (supported by the Institute for Legal Studies at Yonsei University\, 2025-2031). Her recent publications include “Roles and Challenges of Legal Officials During King Chŏngjo’s Reign\,” The Journal of Korean Studies (forthcoming in Vol. 31\, no. 2\, 2026). DESCRIPTION:As a global polycrisis continues to impact modern day life\, perhaps no other institution is experiencing the impact of rapid change more than the American museum. In this talk\, Dr. Moore will identify and name the challenges to museums and the impact on visitors\, communities\, and museum professionals. What is the value of the museum in the 21st century? How can those who love museums fight back to preserve the positive benefits of museums as these institutions work hard to preserve memory\, archive human activity\, and work to tell inclusive\, truthful\, and powerful stories? Dr. Moore will outline the promise of cultural institutions and discuss how we need museums now more than ever to help us make meaning of our lives\, create places of respite and refuge\, and foster welcoming for all communities\; especially those with histories of oppression and marginalization.\n\nDr. Porchia Moore is the Associate Director of the Center for Arts\, Migration\, and Entrepreneurship and Associate Professor and Director of Museum Studies at the University of Florida. She is the Co-Director of the international collaboratory\, The Incluseum\, and the co-founder of the Visitors of Color Project. Her scholarship examines the relationship between digital technologies\, race\, identity\, and communities.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Quantitative Methods in the Social Science (QMSS) Program for a resume-building workshop with a special focus on highlighting & marketing your data-related skills from QMSS (and other!) courses. \n\nIn the first half of the workshop\, students will receive general advice on how to structure a data-centric resume and some dos and dont's/tips and tricks for creating stronger application materials. In addition\, students will get specific advice for how to market data and analytical skills taught in QMSS courses including QMSS 201\, 301\, and 451 that goes beyond a basic \"skills\" section. In the second half of the workshop\, students will work in real-time on their own resumes to edit their skills and experience sections based on the previous content and ask questions one-on-one with the presenter about their specific resume\, experiences\, and/or goals.\n\nFollowing the workshop\, participants will have an opportunity to send their resume in and receive written feedback from the presenter and/or senior QMSS Peer Mentors as well as make one-on-one appointments with the presenter or QMSS Peer Mentors to discuss further.\n\nStudents are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet to take notes\, work on (or create!) your current resume\, and/or ask specific questions during the workshop. Rabbitology is the project of (University of Michigan student) Nat Timmerman—a world that was pulled from her odd-running mind. \n\nStrange but charming\, you’ll find these songs bundled in capes of star-dusted moss\, grounded in the natural world\, propelled by the raw and the real. If a song takes place in the woods\, then the woods the song will become\; the percussion is the stomping of the leaves\, the synth is a warped fox’s cry. Thus arise the stories of dread-grey skies\, writhing vines\, and shivering pines—stories of a magically real folk horror. The dark and ugly become beautiful here\, and vice versa. In this world\, there is no such thing as “black or white\,” instead\, everything exists together at once.\n\nThis world is for the souls who never quite fit in\, who found themselves like ghosts\, drifting between realms\, never finding anywhere to settle. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. \n\nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation\, and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band Davina and The Vagabonds in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA\, which she now describes as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” She was adopted by her much older stepfather when he was in his 80s\; he passed away when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says.\n\nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player where she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath\, and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom.\n\nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school\, which morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail\, and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band\, and worked [her] ass off every day since.” \n\nDavina and the Vagabonds shine every time they play. To date\, they’ve performed in forty-five states\, twelve European countries\, and two Canadian provinces. Not to mention\, they’ve earned feverish acclaim from the Chicago Tribune\, NPR\, and more in addition to performing on BBC’s international favorite late-night program Later… With Jools Holland and appearing on PBS’s Bluegrass Underground.

DESCRIPTION:Melding the sounds of America with the sounds of Uganda\n\nFor Jon Muq\, a singer-songwriter born in Uganda and now living in Austin\, Texas\, music is part of a larger conversation he’s having with the world and everybody in it. Drawing from African as well as western musical trends and traditions\, he devises songs as small gifts\, designed to settle into everyday life and provoke reflection and resilience. “These days the world is sad\,” he explains\, “so I wanted to make happy songs. I wanted to write songs that connected with the listener in a very personal way. When someone listens to my music\, it’s not just about me and what I’m singing. It’s about how they understand the songs individually. I think these songs can speak many languages\, depending on what you want from them.”\n\nMuq’s experiences as a child in Uganda and as a man in America give him a unique perspective on the world he’s addressing. “I grew up in a very different life\, where so many people pass through hard times just because they don’t have much. Our biggest issue was food scarcity. Then I came to a different world\, which gave me a picture of how to write a song that can find balance with everyone wherever they are\, whether they have a lot or not much.” With his May 31st debut album with producer Dan Auerbach and tours with Billy Joel\, Norah Jones\, Mavis Staples\, Amythyst Kiah\, Corinne Bailey Rae\, and others\, Muq is expanding the scope of his music to speak to more and more people.

DESCRIPTION:“an American original – a product of the musical melting pot and one of the absolute best singer-songwriters in the world.” –Associated Press\n\nBorn in Miami\, during World War II\, Chris Smither grew up in New Orleans where he first started playing music as a child. The son of a Tulane University professor\, he was taught the rudiments of instrumentation by his uncle on his mother’s ukulele. “Uncle Howard\,” Smither says\, “showed me that if you knew three chords\, you could play a lot of the songs you heard on the radio. And if you knew four chords\, you could pretty much rule the world.” With that bit of knowledge under his belt\, he was hooked. “I’d loved acoustic music – specifically the blues – ever since I first heard Lightnin’ Hopkins’ Blues In My Bottle album. I couldn’t believe the sound Hopkins got. At first I thought it was two guys playing guitar. My style\, to a degree\, came out of trying to imitate that sound I heard.”\n\nIn his early twenties\, Smither turned his back on his anthropology studies and headed to Boston at the urging of legendary folk singer Eric von Schmidt. It was the mid-’60s and acoustic music thrived in the streets and coffeehouses there. Smither forged lifelong friendships with many musicians\, including Bonnie Raitt who went on to record his songs\, “Love You Like A Man” and “I Feel the Same. (Their friendship has endured as their career paths intertwined over the years.) What quickly evolved from his New Orleans and Cambridge musical experiences is his enduring\, singular guitar sound – a beat-driven finger-picking\, strongly influenced by the playing of Mississippi John Hurt and Lightnin’ Hopkins\, layered over the ever-present backbeat of his rhythmic\, tapping feet (always mic’d in performance).
