Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies, University of Detroit Mercy \u2014 School of Architecture, Macomb Community College, Wayne State University, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University, Wayne State University, Detroit Receiving Hospital, Children\u2019s Hospital of Michigan, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\r\n\r\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph, Storyboard, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes, techniques, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath\u2019s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\r\n\r\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities, as well as its narrative possibilities. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration, social in-visibility, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. By offering portraits of minorities and their stories, Nunez-Regueiro\u2019s goal is to create supportive communities for those who need to feel rooted in their geographical space and their present time. \n\nN\u00fa\u00f1ez-Regueiro work is closely related to her experiences of living abroad \u2014 the impermanence, the precarious construction of one's present and even less of one\u2019s future. It is about the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. He often finds inspiration in his grandmother\u2019s stories of the Kamba people, a Bantu ethnic group of eastern Kenya. On the Courtyard pillar, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich\u2019s famous \u201crock\u201d to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form. \n\nSally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock\nSentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950\u2019s, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest, creativity, and ritual, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as \u201cFordite\u201d (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called \u2018Detroit agate\u2019), Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed, sculpted, sealed, assembled, and macro-photographed, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice. \n\nKim Karlsrud: What Amasses\nWhat Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement, expression, coherence, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged, photographed, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial. \nArtist Statements\/Bios\n\nSally Clegg \nSally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham, Massachusetts. Discontinuities in transport and local potential flattening observed by Kelvin probe microscopy are consistent with a compressible, hydrodynamic flow that breaks the electronic sound barrier, opening a path to intrinsically nonlinear devices that exploit shocks.\n\nIn the second experiment, I will discuss how we can affect superconductivity by engineering a material\u2019s electromagnetic environment. Using a \u201cdark\u201d hyperbolic cavity formed by hexagonal boron nitride interfaced with the molecular superconductor \u03ba-(BEDT-TTF)\u2082Cu[N(CN)\u2082]Br (\u03ba-ET), we realize resonant coupling between hBN hyperbolic modes and a molecular vibration implicated in pairing. We use magnetic-force microscopy to detect the Meissner response at the interface of the two materials. We observe a marked suppression of superfluid density at the interface\u2014an effect absent in non-resonant controls.\n\nBio: Abhay Pasupathy is a professor in the physics department at Columbia University (since 2009), and is also a group leader in the Condensed Matter and Materials Science Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory (since 2020). Stable phenomena had appeared earlier, in examples like singular cohomology. But through later developments that used generalized cohomology theories to reduce deep geometrical problems to computations in stable homotopy (like K-theory, or Thom\u2019s work on cobordism), the subject established its centrality. There was a need for a topological setting in which stable phenomena could be systematically studied.\nIn this talk, I will introduce the stable homotopy category from two complementary points of view. First, I will describe how attempts to stabilize the homotopy category of spaces naturally lead to spectra, using the sphere spectrum as a guiding example. Second, I will explain how spectra arise more importantly as representing objects for generalized cohomology theories, beginning with singular cohomology and K-theory.\n\nI hope to place emphasis on building intuition from concrete examples rather than formal foundations. Although we would like to have lasers capable of probing Schwinger-limit fields or accelerating large plasma volumes to relativistic speeds, current laser technology cannot be scaled much beyond the ten-petawatt level without prohibitive cost. Plasma physics offers a solution: plasma can tolerate light intensities far beyond the damage thresholds of solid-state optics. In principle, the use of plasmas as optics allows the construction of compact ultra-high-power lasers, but a range of plasma physics and engineering problems must first be solved. We will discuss how gases and plasmas can be shaped into precision optics suitable for our most powerful and energetic lasers, providing ultra-high damage thresholds and resistance to the neutron and debris fluxes that would be present in an inertial fusion plant. We will show experimental, computational, and analytic results on the performance of gas and plasma diffraction gratings and lenses, including demonstrations of efficiency and stability comparable to standard solid-state optics. We will then discuss designs for plasma-based laser systems and how plasma optics could enable compact lasers with multi-petawatt to exawatt peak powers.\r\n\r\nAbout the Speaker: \r\nMatthew Edwards is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. He received BSE, MA, and PhD degrees from Princeton University in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. From 2019 to 2022 he was a Lawrence Fellow in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
