SUMMARY:Exhibition:CAS Exhibit. Making Armenian Americans - Project Save Photograph Archive/Archive Alive Project
DESCRIPTION:Making Armenian Americans \nCurators: Michael Pifer (U-M| MES) and Kathryn Babayan (U-M|History)\nProject Save Photograph Archive/Archive Alive Project\n\nMaking Armenian Americans invites viewers into a moment of possibility in the early 20th century\, when Armenians fleeing violence at the end of the Ottoman Empire came to reinvent themselves in the promise of America. Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LACS Exhibition. Back in Bahia: The Repatriation Journey of Afro-Brazilian Art from Detroit to Salvador
DESCRIPTION:*Back in Bahia: The Repatriation Journey of Afro-Brazilian Art from Detroit to Salvador*\nCurator: Ryan B. Morrison | Curatorial Assistant: Isabella H. de Lemos\n\nFebruary 2-26\, 2026\, International Institute Gallery\, 547 Weiser Hall\n\n*Back in Bahia: The Repatriation Journey of Afro-Brazilian Art from Detroit to Salvador* traces one of the largest repatriation efforts of Afro-Brazilian art to date. Led by the Detroit-based nonprofit Con/Vida: Popular Arts of the Americas\, the initiative is returning more than 750 works of Afro-Brazilian popular art to Salvador\, Bahia\, where they will enter the collection of the National Museum of Afro-Brazilian Culture (MUNCAB). Built over three decades through sustained relationships with artists\, families\, and workshops across Northeastern Brazil\, the collection reflects the creative ingenuity\, community memory\, and diasporic traditions that define Afro-Brazilian popular art.\n\nThis exhibition highlights selected works from the broader repatriation effort\, recognizing the artists and cultural stewards in Brazil and Michigan who made this historic return possible. Featured are woodcut prints by João Francisco Borges\, Nilo dos Santos\, Givanildo Francisco da Silva\, and José Miguel da Silva\, alongside examples of *literatura de cordel*—popular printed booklets that combine social commentary\, folklore\, poetry\, and song.\n\nFurther reading and details are available in Portuguese and English at https://myumi.ch/61G23.\n\nPresented by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Institute for the Humanities

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Alex Quizon Dissertation Defense
DESCRIPTION:Stable oxygen isotope measurements (δ18O) are important tools in studies of climate\, oceanography\, and hydrology of today and the past. δ18O in fossil marine carbonates (δ18Ocarb) is used to reconstruct past ocean temperatures\, and seawater δ18O (δ18Ow) tracks with salinity and is thus used to interpret hydrological variability. However\, δ18Ocarb-temperature estimates rely on assumptions of how δ18Ow varied in the past\, which remains uncertain. ‘Clumped’ isotope thermometry (Δ47) measurements are independent of δ18Ow\, allowing us to circumvent this uncertainty and to simultaneously reconstruct past ocean temperatures and δ18Ow when combined with δ18Ocarb. This dissertation explores innovations in the utility of these isotopic tools. First\, we investigated the viability of Δ47 paleothermometry in marine gastropods - an archive largely unexplored for Δ47-paleotemperature reconstructions (Chapters 2 & 3). Second\, we explored the utility of δ18Ow and Δ47-derived paleo-δ18Ow as tracers of ocean currents (Chapters 4 & 5) and ice sheet melt (Chapter 6).\n\nChapter 2 documents Δ47-T’s from a suite of modern marine gastropods collected from localities spanning the globe. Our findings suggest that many gastropods precipitate in isotopic equilibrium and accurately record environmental temperatures. However\, some gastropods - notably Caviturritella/Turritella (turritellids) and Campanile - appear to precipitate out of equilibrium (“vital effects”) and thus exhibit Δ47-T’s cooler than actual environmental temperatures.\n\nChapter 3 expands on the finding from Chapter 2 that turritellids appear to exhibit a vital effect-induced cold bias of ~6°C\, reporting Δ47-temperatures from 2 modern and 7 fossil (Mid-Miocene\, ~18-14 Ma) turritellids from Colombia. The Δ47 data from the modern turritellids corroborate the previous finding of a ~6°C cold bias. After a +6°C adjustment is applied to Mid-Miocene Δ47-temperatures\, adjusted Δ47-temperatures align with previous paleotemperature estimates in the region from other studies\, highlighting the potential of vital effect-based corrections.\n\nChapter 4 explores the utility of δ18Ow as a tracer for the Labrador and Gulf Stream boundary currents in the North Atlantic. We collected 358 new salinity and δ18Ow measurements along the Eastern Seaboard\, doubling the number of existing data in the region. Our paired salinity and δ18Ow data show distinct signatures for the Labrador Current and Gulf Stream roughly separated at Cape Hatteras\, North Carolina\, creating the framework for using δ18Ow as a tracer of these currents.\n\nChapter 5 expands on the findings from Chapter 4\, as we discuss the ability of Δ47-derived paleo-δ18Ow to track the Labrador Current and Gulf Stream in the past. We measured fossil quahogs (Mercenaria sp.\, ~130-115 ka and ~80 ka) from localities along the Eastern Seaboard and found that\, despite temporal differences\, paleo-δ18Ow latitudinal trends generally align with the modern δ18Ow latitudinal gradient. Thus\, these findings showcase the potential of Δ47-derived paleo-δ18Ow to track water masses from the past.\n\nChapter 6 builds on the framework of using Δ47-derived paleo-δ18Ow to interpret paleohydrological variability\, as we infer substantial ice sheet melt at Nantucket\, Massachusetts during the Last Interglacial (~130-115 ka). We measured 7 Mercenaria across 2 units at this locality and observed paleo-δ18Ow values significantly depleted relative to modern values\, which is consistent with substantial freshwater input (i.e.\, ice sheet melt).\n\nAltogether\, this dissertation builds on the existing framework of Δ47 and δ18Ow as paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic tools by investigating the viability of marine gastropods for Δ47-paleotemperature reconstructions and exploring Δ47-derived paleo-δ18Ow as a tracer of ocean circulation and ice sheet melt in the past.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lynn Galbreath Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. By utilizing abstract forms\, Galbreath encourages an engagement that goes beyond mere observation\, seeking to provoke thought about how aesthetic choices influence understanding and meaning.\n\nOn the other hand\, Storyboard is a series of image-driven installation paintings that vary greatly in size\, showcasing Galbreath’s versatility and creative ingenuity. The titles of the works draw inspiration from the years spent creating visuals for TV commercials and public service announcements\, illustrating how commercial art often intertwines with societal messages. This series emphasizes the profound impact visual narratives have on consumer culture and public perception\, underscoring the artist's belief in the potency of imagery to shape narratives. The installations weave a complex fabric of storytelling that challenges viewers to reconsider their relationship with media and the messages they consume daily.\n\nWorking Hard for a Living pays tribute to our sustainable and unsustainable resources\, shedding light on the individuals who toil diligently within these economic frameworks. This series highlights the hard-working suppliers of essential products\, including Farm Market Managers\, Fishmongers\, and Beach Vendors. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. The layered narratives present in this series open a dialogue about the value we place on labor and the often unseen struggles that support our day-to-day lives. Through these explorations\, Galbreath establishes a multifaceted narrative that intertwines art with activism\, compelling audiences to engage both aesthetically and ethically with the realities depicted in the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. It was curated by Abigail Staub\, PhD Candidate\, Interdepartmental Program in Mediterranean Art & Archaeology.\n\nAnna Bonnell Freidin\, U-M associate professor of history\, will talk about \"Healing the Womb: Uterine Amulets in the Roman World\" (https://events.umich.edu/event/142418) on January 16.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stamping and Stomping: community inspired relief prints
DESCRIPTION:Currently based in Ann Arbor\, Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker born in Lima\, Peru. Paloma attended art college in Mexico\, where she came face to face with printmaking during her first year at the Facultad de Artes Plásticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa\, Veracruz. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers\, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997\, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration\, social in-visibility\, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. By offering portraits of minorities and their stories\, Nunez-Regueiro’s goal is to create supportive communities for those who need to feel rooted in their geographical space and their present time. \n\nNúñez-Regueiro work is closely related to her experiences of living abroad — the impermanence\, the precarious construction of one's present and even less of one’s future. It is about the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. She is an incessantly positive artist and she profoundly believes in art as a tool to create the social change that can lead us to thoughtful actions\, and the bettering of ourselves and our communities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Terence Swafford Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition showcases a decade of artist Terry Swafford’s work in Detroit\, marking the culmination of years spent composing scenes from the untamed edges of urban communities. These paintings serve as a visual record of Detroit’s transformation\, capturing humanity’s impact on the environment alongside nature’s persistent efforts to reclaim these spaces. As the city continues to change\, many of these depicted scenes are vanishing\, no longer visible in the landscape today. The significance of this documentation goes beyond mere nostalgia\; it invites viewers to reflect on the dynamic interplay between urban development and ecological restoration\, prompting a deeper understanding of how cities evolve while retaining traces of their history.\n\nSwafford’s paintings are created on location and in one session. The natural conditions\, including light\, shadow\, and atmosphere\, change dramatically from hour to hour and day to day\, forcing the artist to respond quickly and decisively. This approach\, born of a direct engagement with the subject and the fleeting nature of the scene\, along with his wet-on-wet technique\, keeps the work fresh and immediate. By immersing himself in the environment\, Swafford captures the diverse textures and vibrant colors that characterize Detroit’s landscape\, imbuing his work with a sense of urgency and spontaneity. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. He has shown his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago\, Kansas City\, and New York State. Each exhibition serves as a testament to his commitment to his craft and his ability to engage diverse audiences\, offering them an opportunity to explore the complex narratives woven into each landscape.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tukilile Vaa
DESCRIPTION:Kaloki Nyamai is a multidisciplinary artist based in Nairobi. His practice explores Kenya's histories and collective memory\, blending Kamba traditions with contemporary narratives. Using acrylic paint\, rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, his free-hanging immersive works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation. For his U-M project\, Nyamai will present one large unstretched piece and two framed paintings at the Institute for the Humanities\, as well as a second free-hanging work at the U-M Museum of Art.\n\nThe physicality of his complex constructions inspire wonder in the viewer. The works are vast in scale\, embedded with stories\, where past and future merge both poetically and conceptually. In each composition\, the artist proposes a powerful alternative to the flatness of singular narratives of Kenyan history and identity presented as the definitive postcolonial account. He likens the formal act of stitching to symbolically unifying a wounded or fractured community.\n\nNyamai founded the Kamene Cultural & Research Center in Nairobi\, a creative and collaborative hub dedicated to the preservation\, promotion\, and innovation of African cultural practices.\n\nAbout the artist:\nKaloki Nyamai (*1985 in Kitui\, Kenya) is a multidisciplinary artist working with installation\, painting\, and sculpture based in Nairobi. From an early age\, his mother introduced him to painting and taught him to draw\, fostering an ever-lasting interest in art throughout his life. He often finds inspiration in his grandmother’s stories of the Kamba people\, a Bantu ethnic group of eastern Kenya. Using materials like acrylic paint\, sisal rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, Nyamai’s free-hanging pieces evoke the healing of historical wounds and a collective yearning for renewal. His works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation\, creating cohesive\, immersive experiences where past\, present\, and future converge poetically.\n\nNyamai studied Interior Design at the Buruburu Institute Of Fine Arts (BIFA) and then pursued painting after working in other creative fields. His large-scale paintings and mixed-media installations intricately explore historical narratives\, examining their resonance in the present. Nyamai has shown his work across the globe in solo exhibitions at the Norval Foundation\, Cape Town (2024)\; James Cohan Gallery\, New York (2024)\; Galerie Barbara Thumm\, Berlin (2023 and 2022)\; SEPTIEME Gallery\, Paris (2019)\, and other venues. In 2023\, he featured part of his series Dining in Chaos in the “Unlimited” section at Art Basel in Basel. He has participated in group exhibitions and biennials\, most recently at the Sharjah Biennial 16\, Sharjah (2025)\; The Völklinger Hütte\, Völklingen (2024)\; the Kenyan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale\, Venice (2022)\; and the Dakar Biennale (2022). His works are part of numerous private and institutional collections around the world\, such as the Dallas Art Museum\, the Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art\, and the Arthur Primas Museum.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Solving the Biggest Problems: Problem-Solving Sociology and American Populism”
DESCRIPTION:Join the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Monica Prasad\, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Economic and Political Sociology at Johns Hopkins University. Monica will present\, “Solving the Biggest Problems: Problem-Solving Sociology and American Populism.”\n\nAbstract: “Recently several groups of scholars have independently argued that sociology should attempt to solve problems\, from the community around “problem-solving sociology\,” to “solution oriented sociology\,” to scholars arguing that sociologists should attempt to solve inequality\, to the “positive turn” in economic sociology. But many of the biggest problems that sociologists examine cannot be solved in the course of a scholarly career. This talk discusses the sociology of knowledge questions raised by trying to solve the biggest problems\, and then tries to solve one of the biggest problems: American populism and its protectionist turn\, which is unusual in comparative perspective. I show that even when problems cannot be solved\, trying to solve them is worthwhile for the insights it generates.”\n\nMonica Prasad’s areas of interest are economic sociology\, comparative historical sociology\, and political sociology. Her books The Politics of Free Markets\, The Land of Too Much\, and Starving the Beast examine American political economy in comparative perspective\, and argue that progressive policies are most effective when they are embedded in a broader political economy that is favorable to business interests.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RESET Demonstration Project: Overview and Technical Background
DESCRIPTION:The seminar will provide an overview and technical background for the Re-Engineering Statistics using Economic Transactions Demonstration Project (RESET DP). This project proposes a new architecture for building official measures of inflation and spending from granular\, item-level transactions data\, offering internally consistent measures of real expenditures and inflation. The RESET architecture aims to replace the existing 20th century infrastructure for official statistics\, which relies on disparate surveys and enumerations\, with one built upon 21st century information systems. The RESET DP will release real-time monthly indices of inflation and sales covering most retail goods in the United States—accounting for almost ten percent of GDP.\n\nItem-level transactions data yield cost-of-living indices that can account for quality change and consumer substitution. Transactions data require confronting the rapid turnover of items because prices of new and existing products are interrelated in equilibrium. The attached paper “Quality Adjustment at Scale: Hedonic vs. Exact Demand-Based Price Indices” evaluates multiple approaches to measuring quality change at scale. It shows that a hedonic superlative approach—using econometrics or machine learning for hedonic estimation combined with index formulas that require simultaneous observation of item-level price and expenditure—yields improved measures of the cost of living. Accounting for ubiquitous quality change and for consumer substitution yields lower measures of inflation than traditional\, official methods.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series: Context-dependent collaboration and conflict in microbial mutualisms
DESCRIPTION:Description: Resource context often has a large effect on the ecology and evolution of nutritional mutualisms\, such as the symbiosis between leguminous plants and rhizobium bacteria. Increased soil nitrogen\, for example\, causes rhizobia to become less mutualistic\, but this may be due to direct or indirect effects. I experimentally evolved soil microbial communities to disentangle three possible drivers of reduced mutualism-- soil nitrogen\, light\, and host availability-- as well as whether mutualism quality would recover after fertilization cessation. Additionally\, I investigated possible non-additive effects of adding a second symbiont\, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi\, to the legume-rhizobium system\, because mycorrhizae are an additional carbon sink for plant hosts.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Legitimizing Painting as a Livelihood for \"Gentlemen\" (shi 士) in 10th–13th Century China
DESCRIPTION:One of the most paradigmatic frameworks in Song dynasty (960–1279) art history is a division between high-status\, avocational “literati” or “gentleman” (shi 士) painters and low-status\, occupational “artisan” (gong 工) painters. This presentation situates that symbolic boundary within a specific discourse of artistic appraisal\, and contrasts it with a growing acceptance of painting as a legitimate livelihood for respectable “gentlemen” in the 10th–13th centuries. By tracing the coexistence of these two conflicting perspectives on occupational painting\, and their impact on occupational painters\, it offers a new understanding of how social and symbolic boundaries were negotiated in Song art worlds.\n \n Zach Berge-Becker is a Postdoctoral Fellow and Lecturer at the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. His research examines practices and processes of identity construction and social distinction in middle period China\, by focusing on fields of action that served as leisure for some and livelihoods for others\, such as: painting\, making music\, fishing\, gardening\, and playing board games.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Woll Family Speaker Series Presents: Dr. Rick Hodes as guest speaker
DESCRIPTION:Medicine wrestles with a persistent question: What does it mean to care for the vulnerable when resources are scarce and suffering is relentless? In an era when global health is often reduced to short-term interventions and metrics\, the deeper moral demands of accompaniment can fade from view. Dr. Rick Hodes challenges this narrowing of vision. In his upcoming talk for the Woll Family Speaker Series\, he invites us to consider medicine not as a transaction\, but as a sustained moral commitment.\nDrawing on more than three decades of work in Ethiopia\, Dr. Hodes will share stories of children with complex cardiac and spinal conditions and of a physician who chose to stay. He explores the ethical tensions of caring for patients whose needs far exceed available resources\, and asks what obligations endure when the usual boundaries of training\, geography\, and time fall away.\nDr. Hodes is an internist who has lived and worked in Ethiopia since the mid-1980s. His work brings children to the United States for life-saving care while strengthening local medical capacity. We are honored to welcome Dr. Hodes to the Woll Family Speaker Series for a conversation that will challenge\, inspire\, and reframe how we think about moral responsibility in medicine.\n\nWe are grateful to co-sponsor this talk with Global Reach.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Afterlives of Revolution: Political Passions in Post-revolutionary Nicaragua
DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nThe Sandinista National Liberation Front\, which once led a Marxist-inspired popular revolution in Nicaragua (1979-1990)\, returned to power sixteen years later\, now in alliance with former foes in the business sector and the Catholic Church. Based on ethnographic research with contemporary Sandinistas\, this talk examines what appears to be the uncanny transformation of Nicaragua’s revolutionary left tradition during times of neoliberal hegemony and the contradictions that have arisen for grassroots organizers committed to creating lasting structural change.\n\n*Luciana Chamorro is a 2025-26 Hunting Family Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and Assisstant Professor of Anthropology.*

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Getting Better All the Time: Metadata Enhancements in the ICPSR Catalog
DESCRIPTION:ICPSR is enhancing our metadata – the information we provide about each study\, like its title\, time period\, and subject – to make our data easier to find\, use\, and share. These improvements have been designed as part of ICPSR’s Research Data Ecosystem (RDE) platform\, supported by the National Science Foundation\, and are now being introduced to some live ICPSR data collections. \n\nEnhancements include:\n * addition of persistent identifiers (PIDs) for people and organizations\, to support connections across systems\;\n * improved controlled vocabularies to search by data characteristics such as format and collection method – like survey\, panel\, or GIS data\;\n * new required fields to clearly indicate where\, when\, and what each data collection is about\;\n * better handling of geographic coverage and new fields that help users find data from small towns to entire continents\, including nationally representative data.\n\nIn this presentation\, members of ICPSR’s metadata team will show these enhancements\, which are already live in some ICPSR data collections. We’ll also share practical tips for attendees who deposit data with ICPSR or support people who do – ideas to help depositors prepare to make the best use of these new fields as they roll out to more collections within ICPSR.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MICDE – NERS – MIPSE Joint Seminar: Brian Haines\, Los Alamos National Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe xRAGE radiation-hydrodynamics code is a state-of-the art simulation tool for modeling inertial confinement fusion experiments. xRAGE is one of only three radiation-hydrodynamics codes developed in the U.S. with sufficient physics to credibly model both capsule implosions as well as the high-Z cylindrical hohlraums used to convert laser energy into an X-ray drive for the capsule. xRAGE solves the equations for hydrodynamics and other physics in an Eulerian reference frame and features adaptive mesh refinement\, which makes it uniquely well-suited to accurately modeling capsule defects and engineering features that are important factors limiting capsule performance. In the first half of this talk\, we will discuss the physics modeling capabilities and algorithms available in xRAGE with an emphasis on those relevant to high-energy-density physics and inertial confinement fusion. In the second half of the talk\, we will discuss the successful application of xRAGE to provide pre-shot predictions for seventeen high-yield capsule implosions on the National Ignition Facility. This will include the modeling methodology\, how we establish prediction uncertainties\, and how we have learned from prediction failures to improve the methodology. Our predictions have exhibited a 67% success rate thus far\, which is much higher than other pre-shot predictions over the same set of experiments.\n\nBio: \nBrian M. Haines is a Senior Distinguished Scientist in the Eulerian Codes group in the X-Computational Physics division at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He is currently the lead for the Ignition Applications project\, which includes the THOR and BrassOwl experimental campaigns on the National Ignition Facility. Brian leads the effort to produce LANL xRAGE pre-shot predictions and post-shot analysis of high-yield implosion attempts on the National Ignition Facility. Brian led the decadal effort to develop the xRAGE radiation-hydrodynamics code into a state-of-the-art tool for modeling inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and high-energy density physics experiments and has pioneered the use of xRAGE to perform large-scale high-resolution full-physics three-dimensional simulations of ICF implosions to understand the impacts of hydrodynamic instabilities and engineering features. Prior to his current position\, Brian was a Metropolis postdoc in the Methods & Algorithms group from 2011-2013 and did various internships as a student with Argonne National Laboratory\, LANL\, the National Security Agency\, and the Institute for Defense Analyses’ Center for Communications Research. Brian received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Penn State University in 2011 and a B.A. in mathematics and physics from New York University in 2006. Brian has co-authored 100 peer-reviewed publications that have received over 3\,400 citations and has been awarded a Secretary’s Honor Award from DOE\, four distinguished performance awards from LANL\, five defense program awards of excellence from NNSA\, an ICF program award from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)\, and a Director’s Science and Technology Award from LLNL.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Water@Michigan Coffee Talk: Data Centers\, Energy\, and Water Systems: Modeling the impacts on infrastructure\, environment\, and affordability
DESCRIPTION:Event Logistics:\n\n📅 Date: Tuesday\, February 10\, 2026\n\n🕑 Time: 3:00-4:30p\n\n📍 Location: Michigan League\, Hussey Room [911 N University Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109]\n\n\nTalk Description: Data Centers\, Energy\, and Water Systems: Modeling the impacts on infrastructure\, environment\, and affordability\n\nAs data centers rapidly expand across the U.S. and globally\, they are reshaping communities\, resource consumption\, and sustainability. In Michigan alone\, there are at least 16 proposed datacenter sites in 10 counties across the Lower Peninsula. Access to land\, electricity\, and water\, as well as favourable regulations and tax incentives are driving the data center boom. However\, there are concerns over the sustainability of data centers and their impacts on both the natural and built environment. Data centers already make up 4% of total electricity consumption in the U.S.\, and are expected to consume 6-12% by 2030. Both the load growth and corresponding uncertainty present a challenge to utility companies: how do we plan for unprecedented levels of load growth? How do we accommodate uncertainty in load forecasts? How do we ensure affordable and reliable access to electricity and water? This talk will share findings from an ongoing project on Data center Energy and Water Systems (DEWS). Through a literature review and expert interviews with stakeholders and companies involved in data center development and operations\, we are exploring the impacts of data centers on infrastructure\, environment\, and affordability. \n\nAbout the Speaker: \nRabab Haider\, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering\n\nDr. Rabab Haider is an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan. Her research is centered on designing future energy systems that provide green\, reliable\, and affordable energy for All. Her group develops optimization and AI algorithms that advance energy system operations\, planning\, and market under deep decarbonization. Dr. Haider’s portfolio also includes engagement with multiple global organizations to enable widespread access to STEMM education\, mentorship\, and leadership training. She received her Ph.D. and S.M. degrees at MIT\, and B.A.Sc in Engineering Science at the University of Toronto. She was previously named a MIT Energy Fellow and MathWorks-MIT Mechanical Engineering Fellow. Dr. Haider is also an Affiliate Faculty at the Georgia Institute of Technology and NSF AI Institute for Advances in Optimization (AI4OPT). \n\nYou can register for the event here: https://graham.umich.edu/wateratmichigan/coffee-talks\n\nAbout Coffee Talks: Coffee Talks provide a monthly opportunity for U-M faculty\, staff\, and students interested in water\, and water-interested people in southeast Michigan to connect with colleagues\, learn about pressing and/or emerging water-related issues\, and meet new partners. This academic year\, we are excited to explore the intersection of water + energy and what this nexus means to U-M researchers\, institutes\, and external partners. Coffee Talks are in-person convenings designed to build connections as part of the U-M Water Center's mission and programs\; we are not recording sessions at this time.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Folk Democracy in Postwar Czechoslovakia
DESCRIPTION:During the Second World War\, Czechoslovakia’s political leaders rejected the liberal democratic system of the interwar period and sought to renew their state’s independence on a new basis of national unity\, social equality\, and political participation. Upon liberation in 1945\, members of the antifascist resistance worked at the local level to reestablish national sovereignty and lay the foundations of this new order — *lidová demokracie*\, which might be translated as “folk democracy” rather than the traditional “people’s democracy.” Like folk songs or folk art\, folk democracy was understood to represent the creative efforts of the common people\, unmediated by party elites or state institutions. In the remote\, rural region of Moravian Wallachia\, a stronghold of the Czech partisan movement under Nazi occupation\, folk democracy promised both material benefits and symbolic recognition. Local Communists appealed to this vision first to win support among Wallachians and then to consolidate one-party rule after their leaders’ seizure of power in February 1948. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series | Reply 1997: K-Dramas and Conjunctural Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person and virtually on Zoom. The webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/JPJAe\n\nSouth Korean serials (aka K-Dramas) are increasingly understood as a new paradigm of global media production on content streaming platforms. South Korean content industries have established a repertoire of narrative and character tropes that inventively combine multiple genres of popular storytelling\, including zombie thrillers: All of Us Are Dead\, Kingdom\, Sweet Home\; survival games: Physical 100\, Hellbound\; corporate/gangster noir: Vincenzo\, Little Women\; school bullying and revenge: The Glory\, Extracurricular\, Weak Hero\; and romantic comedy: Crash Landing on You\, Business Proposal\, and many others. How did the Korean media ecosystem become so adept at anticipating globally resonant narratives and integrating local productions into the transnational infrastructures of new “television” consumption? This talk revisits the South Korean television series Reply 1997 (Ungtap hara 1997\, tvN\, 2012) as a crucial piece of the “K-content” puzzle\, though it may seem at first glance to be an entirely different type of media object than the more recent streaming sensations mentioned above. Cho contends that the series and the broader cultural currents to which it gave form uniquely illuminate the transformative encounters\, uneven entanglements\, and overdetermined desires and aspirations that signify the “global” in “global media.” In this talk\, she'll contextualize the show in the trajectory of Korean television’s increasingly platform-mediated mission to become a representative global media industry and popular narrative form\, and analyze its novel approach to periodization. Cho will foreground the overdetermining impact of the late 1990s historical conjuncture to interpret the gesture of rewriting the memory of this period through the figure of the fangirl as an exemplary late-capitalist subject.\n \n Michelle Cho is assistant professor of Korean Media and director of the Centre for the Study of Korea at the University of Toronto. Her work explores South Korean genre cinemas\, Korean television\, digital platforms\, and mediations of race and gender in K-Pop and its fandoms. She is co-editor of Bangtan Remixed: A Critical BTS Reader and Mediating Gender in Post-Authoritarian South Korea and author of the forthcoming monograph *Genre Worlds: Global Forms and Millennial South Korean Cinema*. Her public-facing writing appears in such venues as The Los Angeles Review of Books\, and she regularly contributes to the CBC’s daily culture show Commotion. She’s also a frequent commentator on Asian media in outlets ranging from NPR to CNN to The Washington Post.\n\n*Accommodation: If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at ncks.info@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Film Screening:WCEE Film Series on Ukraine. *Erase the Nation* (2023\, 56 min)
DESCRIPTION:\"Erase the Nation\" is a documentary war film that sheds light on the tragic chapter of Russian war crimes committed against Ukraine’s national and multicultural heritage. This powerful film highlights the devastation inflicted on museums\, monuments\, archaeological sites and sacred places such as the cathedral in Odessa\, all ruthlessly destroyed by Russian forces who are trying to rewrite history in the name of the chauvinist ideology of “Great Russia''.\n\nHowever\, \"Erase the Nation\" doesn't just capture the destruction. It also reveals the resilience and determination of individuals from the world of culture who are working hard to preserve our common heritage or choose to stand up and join the fight for their homeland. The film pays tribute to these brave souls\, emphasizing that those who perished in the conflict would never have the chance to compose new songs\, direct new films\, or craft new poetry.\n\n\"Erase the Nation\" is a testament to the enduring power of culture\, which proves stronger than the hatred of barbarism. It underscores how even in the face of devastation\, the spirit of art and heritage can shine through\, offering hope and a path toward restoration.\n \n Free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come\, first-served basis.\n \nTrailer: https://myumi.ch/612M1\n \n Tomasz Grzywaczewski is a war journalist\, documentary filmmaker\, and author of nonfiction books with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe. Since February 2022\, he has been serving as a correspondent for the Chief Evening News Service on TVP1\, reporting from Ukraine’s frontline\, adding to his coverage of conflict zones like Donbas\, Kurdistan\, and Nagorno Karabakh. Grzywaczewski has collaborated with numerous media outlets\, including CBS News and Foreign Policy. His recent documentary\, “Erase the Nation\,” has been screened at international forums such as OSCE and UNESCO\, as well as in cities worldwide e.g. Stockholm\, New York\, and Kuala Lumpur.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at gosiak@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:When Hebrew Met the Machine
DESCRIPTION:What happens when an ancient language meets modern technology? This lecture will discuss the role played by media technologies—such as the phonograph\, typewriters\, the telegraph\, and computers—in the revitalization and modernization of Hebrew since the end of the nineteenth century. After lying dormant for two millennia as a mainly written language\, Hebrew awoke from its literary slumber and became a living modern vernacular. The revitalization of Hebrew is unique and unprecedented in world history\, and it has been studied in various fields\; but the role of modern media technologies in mediating this revival has not yet been considered. This lecture will delve into questions such as: what was the role of sound recording technologies in shaping the reemerging modern Hebrew speech? And how did the Hebraized typewrite pushed for the modernization of writing in Hebrew?. It will show how these media\, whose emergence ran in historical parallel to the revitalization of Hebrew\, were an active force in shaping the language as a modern communicative medium. Hebrew was a historical media lab: written from right to left and in unique script\, it posed technical as well as conceptual challenges to media which were originally designed for Latin script and Western writing systems. The adaptation of these technologies to Hebrew required various adaptations that shaped lingual mechanisms\, which had social and political ramifications on the emerging Hebrew culture. \n\nIdo Ramati is a senior lecturer at The Noah Mozes Department of Communication and Journalism and the Program in Cultural Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He studies the relation between media technologies\, language and culture\, from historical and philosophical perspectives. Ramati is the author of Lingua Ex Machina: Media in the Revitalization of Modern Hebrew\, out now in University of Pennsylvania press. His current project is on AI voices\, focusing on the shaping of the human voice by historical and contemporary machines.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:II Cineforum
DESCRIPTION:II Cineforum: Italian Classics on Campus Film Screening Series\n\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!\nFilm in Italian with English subtitles\n\nLocated in North Quad Space 2435\n\nTuesday\, February 10 @7pm\, Ladri di biciclette\, Vittorio De Sica\, 1948.\n\nFilm synopsis: Hailed around the world as one of the greatest movies ever made\, the Academy Award–winning Bicycle Thieves\, directed by Vittorio De Sica\, defined an era in cinema. In poverty-stricken postwar Rome\, a man is on his first day of a new job that offers hope of salvation for his desperate family when his bicycle\, which he needs for work\, is stolen. With his young son in tow\, he sets off to track down the thief. Simple in construction and profoundly rich in human insight\, Bicycle Thieves embodies the greatest strengths of the Italian neorealist movement: emotional clarity\, social rectitude\, and brutal honesty.\n\nTuesday\, March 17 @7pm\, La strada\, Federico Fellini\, 1954. \n\nFilm synopsis: There has never been a face quite like that of Giulietta Masina. Her husband\, the legendary Federico Fellini\, directs her as Gelsomina in La Strada\, the film that launched them both to international stardom. Gelsomina is sold by her mother into the employ of Zampanò (Anthony Quinn)\, a brutal strongman in a traveling circus. When Zampanò encounters an old rival in highwire artist the Fool (Richard Basehart)\, his fury is provoked to its breaking point. With La Strada\, Fellini left behind the familiar signposts of Italian neorealism for a poetic fable of love and cruelty\, evoking brilliant performances and winning the hearts of audiences and critics worldwide.\n\nTuesday\, April 7 @7pm\, Il bell'Antonio\, Mauro Bolognini\, 1960. \n\nFilm synopsis: In the lush city of Catania\, Sicily\, Antonio (Marcello Mastroianni) is regarded as the ultimate lover of women\, a title he holds dear. Yet not long after marrying the beautiful Barbara (Claudia Cardinale)\, Antonio’s new obligations begin to weigh on him\, and soon he is faltering in the bedroom. In short order\, his impotence is the talk of the town\, and Antonio is a laughingstock. As he tries to repair the damage to his marriage\, Barbara considers her options for leaving.

SUMMARY:Performance:Pieta Brown & The Taken
DESCRIPTION:“Her artistry combines folk\, country and dusky swamp in a graceful\, supple and elegant genre of their own.\" –American Songwriter\n\nHailed as a “self-styled poetess\, folk goddess\, and country waif” by the BBC\, Pieta Brown first came to international prominence with the release of her self-titled debut in 2002. Since then she has released multiple highly critically acclaimed albums\, EPs and singles\, with much attention being paid not only to her distinct sound and style\, but also the power of her singing and songwriting.\n\nAlthough the Alabama-bred\, Iowa-based Brown’s quietly riveting tunes and gritty\, charismatic performing style resist easy categorization\, they’ve helped her to win a fiercely loyal international fan base that extends to many of her fellow artists.\n\n“When Pieta sings you’re aware of something effortless and natural\, like rain on earth\,” Mark Knopfler observed\, while Don Was called her “a great singer-songwriter who possesses major star-power magnetism\,” and Iris DeMent described her as “the best poet I’ve heard in a long damn time.”\n\nBon Iver frontman Justin Vernon says Paradise Outlaw is “probably my favorite record ever made at our studio.”\n\nPieta has toured extensively since her first release\, and has performed at festivals in the US\, Canada and around the world\, including Bonnaroo\, Mountain Jam\, Calgary Folk Fest\, Edmonton Folk Music Festival\, Portfairy Folk Festival\, Celtic Connections\, and more. Pieta’s songs and music have been heard in various TV Shows and indie films\, and her albums Paradise Outlaw and Mercury both reached #1 on various radio charts. Pieta has also made guest appearances on National Public Radio shows including World Cafe\, KCRW\, Mountain Stage\, E-Town\, Folk Alley\, and Weekend Edition.\n\n“In her hands the blues hover with cloudy foreboding and old-time songs become billowy dances.” ~ Chicago Reader
