SUMMARY:Exhibition:CAS Exhibit. Making Armenian Americans - Project Save Photograph Archive/Archive Alive Project
DESCRIPTION:Making Armenian Americans \nCurators: Michael Pifer (U-M| MES) and Kathryn Babayan (U-M|History)\nProject Save Photograph Archive/Archive Alive Project\n\nMaking Armenian Americans invites viewers into a moment of possibility in the early 20th century\, when Armenians fleeing violence at the end of the Ottoman Empire came to reinvent themselves in the promise of America. Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lucas Gomes Dissertation Defense
DESCRIPTION:Past extinction events throughout Earth’s history have arisen during periods of major environmental change\, offering unique lessons about how ecosystems function and respond to environmental pressures. By studying the environmental mechanisms that forced extinction and ecological change in the geologic record\, we can better prepare for and mitigate biodiversity loss in the face of present-day global environmental crises. Shallow marine ecosystems on the Florida Platform underwent a dramatic transformation over the past ~4 million years\, part of a “regional mass extinction” documented broadly around the Plio-Pleistocene West Atlantic. In this dissertation\, I resolve major gaps in the marine environmental record of the Plio-Pleistocene Florida Platform using stratigraphic\, paleontological\, and geochemical approaches\, enabling clearer evaluation of the environmental perturbations responsible for this regional extinction event.\n\nThe oxygen isotope composition of water (δ18Owater) is a useful tracer of the hydrological cycle and a critical parameter in carbonate-based (δ18Ocarb) paleotemperature studies. In Chapter 2\, I examine the controls on coastal δ18Owater variability along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard by mapping salinity–δ18Owater mixing relationships in estuaries from Maine to Florida. Relatively invariant marine δ18Owater signatures primarily track the prevailing coastal water mass\, while freshwater δ18Owater varies widely in response to regional gradients in precipitation (δ18Oprecip) signatures and evaporative intensity. Additional triple oxygen isotope (Δʹ17O) measurements of Florida river waters indicate a remarkable degree of evaporative isotope enrichment. This modern isotopic framework can be used to constrain assumptions about ancient δ18Owater compositions across this region and better interpret fossil δ18Ocarb records from coastal marine paleoenvironments.\n\nIn Chapters 3 and 4\, I present two new study sites containing fossil-rich Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary exposures in southwest (Florida Shell Quarry) and eastern Florida (Beeline Quarry)\, respectively. Detailed lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic characterization through each of these sections enable the detailed reconstruction of local depositional paleoenvironments and relative sea-level fluctuations. The development of these new sections and their careful integration within the historical Plio-Pleistocene stratigraphic framework of peninsular Florida establishes a foundation for renewed study of Florida’s paleoecological evolution over the past ~4 Myr. At Beeline Quarry (Chapter 4)\, I further apply clumped isotope (Δ47) thermometry to fossil shells to reconstruct water temperatures and δ18Owater compositions during deposition of the Nashua Fm. (Early Pleistocene) and Fort Thompson Fm. (Late Pleistocene). Surprisingly cool temperatures and depleted δ18Owater values in both units relative to modern coastal waters likely reflect persistent influence of submarine groundwater discharge along the Atlantic Coast of Florida.\n\nIn Chapter 5\, I reconstruct parallel records of marine climates and planktonic productivity across the six major Plio-Pleistocene formations of southwest Florida and use them to evaluate longstanding hypotheses that the regional extinction event was driven by (i) cooling marine climates and/or (ii) declining primary production. Marine climate seasonality and planktonic productivity were quantified by measuring Δ47 and Ba/Ca ratios\, respectively\, along the growth axes of fossil mollusk shells. The Δ47-temperature record reveals that remarkably cool Pliocene marine climates (similar to present-day North Carolina) warmed rapidly in the Early Pleistocene\, directly contradicting earlier cooling hypotheses and suggesting that rapid warming may have instead contributed to faunal turnover. Independently\, the Ba/Ca-derived productivity record indicates that high productivity persisted until the Early–Middle Pleistocene\, after which it collapsed\, broadly supporting the productivity-driven extinction hypothesis. Altogether\, this work greatly refines our understanding of the co-evolution of life and environments on the Plio-Pleistocene Florida Platform.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lynn Galbreath Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. By utilizing abstract forms\, Galbreath encourages an engagement that goes beyond mere observation\, seeking to provoke thought about how aesthetic choices influence understanding and meaning.\n\nOn the other hand\, Storyboard is a series of image-driven installation paintings that vary greatly in size\, showcasing Galbreath’s versatility and creative ingenuity. The titles of the works draw inspiration from the years spent creating visuals for TV commercials and public service announcements\, illustrating how commercial art often intertwines with societal messages. This series emphasizes the profound impact visual narratives have on consumer culture and public perception\, underscoring the artist's belief in the potency of imagery to shape narratives. The installations weave a complex fabric of storytelling that challenges viewers to reconsider their relationship with media and the messages they consume daily.\n\nWorking Hard for a Living pays tribute to our sustainable and unsustainable resources\, shedding light on the individuals who toil diligently within these economic frameworks. This series highlights the hard-working suppliers of essential products\, including Farm Market Managers\, Fishmongers\, and Beach Vendors. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. The layered narratives present in this series open a dialogue about the value we place on labor and the often unseen struggles that support our day-to-day lives. Through these explorations\, Galbreath establishes a multifaceted narrative that intertwines art with activism\, compelling audiences to engage both aesthetically and ethically with the realities depicted in the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. It was curated by Abigail Staub\, PhD Candidate\, Interdepartmental Program in Mediterranean Art & Archaeology.\n\nAnna Bonnell Freidin\, U-M associate professor of history\, will talk about \"Healing the Womb: Uterine Amulets in the Roman World\" (https://events.umich.edu/event/142418) on January 16.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stamping and Stomping: community inspired relief prints
DESCRIPTION:Currently based in Ann Arbor\, Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker born in Lima\, Peru. Paloma attended art college in Mexico\, where she came face to face with printmaking during her first year at the Facultad de Artes Plásticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa\, Veracruz. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers\, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997\, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration\, social in-visibility\, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. By offering portraits of minorities and their stories\, Nunez-Regueiro’s goal is to create supportive communities for those who need to feel rooted in their geographical space and their present time. \n\nNúñez-Regueiro work is closely related to her experiences of living abroad — the impermanence\, the precarious construction of one's present and even less of one’s future. It is about the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. She is an incessantly positive artist and she profoundly believes in art as a tool to create the social change that can lead us to thoughtful actions\, and the bettering of ourselves and our communities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Terence Swafford Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition showcases a decade of artist Terry Swafford’s work in Detroit\, marking the culmination of years spent composing scenes from the untamed edges of urban communities. These paintings serve as a visual record of Detroit’s transformation\, capturing humanity’s impact on the environment alongside nature’s persistent efforts to reclaim these spaces. As the city continues to change\, many of these depicted scenes are vanishing\, no longer visible in the landscape today. The significance of this documentation goes beyond mere nostalgia\; it invites viewers to reflect on the dynamic interplay between urban development and ecological restoration\, prompting a deeper understanding of how cities evolve while retaining traces of their history.\n\nSwafford’s paintings are created on location and in one session. The natural conditions\, including light\, shadow\, and atmosphere\, change dramatically from hour to hour and day to day\, forcing the artist to respond quickly and decisively. This approach\, born of a direct engagement with the subject and the fleeting nature of the scene\, along with his wet-on-wet technique\, keeps the work fresh and immediate. By immersing himself in the environment\, Swafford captures the diverse textures and vibrant colors that characterize Detroit’s landscape\, imbuing his work with a sense of urgency and spontaneity. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. He has shown his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago\, Kansas City\, and New York State. Each exhibition serves as a testament to his commitment to his craft and his ability to engage diverse audiences\, offering them an opportunity to explore the complex narratives woven into each landscape.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tukilile Vaa
DESCRIPTION:Kaloki Nyamai is a multidisciplinary artist based in Nairobi. His practice explores Kenya's histories and collective memory\, blending Kamba traditions with contemporary narratives. Using acrylic paint\, rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, his free-hanging immersive works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation. For his U-M project\, Nyamai will present one large unstretched piece and two framed paintings at the Institute for the Humanities\, as well as a second free-hanging work at the U-M Museum of Art.\n\nThe physicality of his complex constructions inspire wonder in the viewer. The works are vast in scale\, embedded with stories\, where past and future merge both poetically and conceptually. In each composition\, the artist proposes a powerful alternative to the flatness of singular narratives of Kenyan history and identity presented as the definitive postcolonial account. He likens the formal act of stitching to symbolically unifying a wounded or fractured community.\n\nNyamai founded the Kamene Cultural & Research Center in Nairobi\, a creative and collaborative hub dedicated to the preservation\, promotion\, and innovation of African cultural practices.\n\nAbout the artist:\nKaloki Nyamai (*1985 in Kitui\, Kenya) is a multidisciplinary artist working with installation\, painting\, and sculpture based in Nairobi. From an early age\, his mother introduced him to painting and taught him to draw\, fostering an ever-lasting interest in art throughout his life. He often finds inspiration in his grandmother’s stories of the Kamba people\, a Bantu ethnic group of eastern Kenya. Using materials like acrylic paint\, sisal rope\, photo transfers\, and stitched yarn\, Nyamai’s free-hanging pieces evoke the healing of historical wounds and a collective yearning for renewal. His works blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and installation\, creating cohesive\, immersive experiences where past\, present\, and future converge poetically.\n\nNyamai studied Interior Design at the Buruburu Institute Of Fine Arts (BIFA) and then pursued painting after working in other creative fields. His large-scale paintings and mixed-media installations intricately explore historical narratives\, examining their resonance in the present. Nyamai has shown his work across the globe in solo exhibitions at the Norval Foundation\, Cape Town (2024)\; James Cohan Gallery\, New York (2024)\; Galerie Barbara Thumm\, Berlin (2023 and 2022)\; SEPTIEME Gallery\, Paris (2019)\, and other venues. In 2023\, he featured part of his series Dining in Chaos in the “Unlimited” section at Art Basel in Basel. He has participated in group exhibitions and biennials\, most recently at the Sharjah Biennial 16\, Sharjah (2025)\; The Völklinger Hütte\, Völklingen (2024)\; the Kenyan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale\, Venice (2022)\; and the Dakar Biennale (2022). His works are part of numerous private and institutional collections around the world\, such as the Dallas Art Museum\, the Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art\, and the Arthur Primas Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 2): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - April 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (May 12 - August 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 2 Curatorial Statement\n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Sally Clegg (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Kim Karlsrud (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtists Sally Clegg and Kim Karlsrud wrap the Division Street pillars in highly site-specific ornament unearthed from the overlooked margins of Ann Arbor. On the Courtyard pillar\, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road\, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar\, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich’s famous “rock” to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form. \n\nSally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock\nSentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950’s\, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest\, creativity\, and ritual\, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as “Fordite” (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called ‘Detroit agate’)\, Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers\, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed\, sculpted\, sealed\, assembled\, and macro-photographed\, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems\, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice. \n\nKim Karlsrud: What Amasses\nWhat Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed\, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution\, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement\, expression\, coherence\, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged\, photographed\, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial. \nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nSally Clegg \nSally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham\, Massachusetts. Her studio practice is rooted in sculpture and expanded printmaking\, stemming from a fascination with human efforts to make meaning from our relationships to objects. Clegg integrates history\, popular culture\, literature and philosophy as material for artmaking\, leveraging personal anecdote and humor to reveal the complexity\, absurdity\, and theoretical richness at play in our connections to things and to ourselves. \n\nClegg holds an MFA in Art from The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design\, and a BA in Art & English from Goucher College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally\, and her work can be found in permanent collections at Yale University\, The New York Public Library\, and elsewhere. Her artwork and writing has appeared in ASAP/Journal\, BOMB Magazine\, Sculpture Magazine\, and Hyperallergic. She is a lecturer in Art & Design at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\n\nKim Karlsrud \nKim Karlsrud is the co-founder of Commonstudio\, a collaborative creative practice that develops socio-ecological and spatial interventions\, installations\, and initiatives working with and within urban landscapes. Her work explores the space between art and design\, and is grounded in the concept of the “commons\,” that which is shared\, as well as that which is ordinary\, banal\, and commonplace.\n\nKarlsrud completed her undergraduate degree in Product Design from Otis College of Art and Design and an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan. She is currently an Assistant Visiting Professor in the College of Design at the University of Oregon\, teaching across Art and Landscape Architecture departments. She jointly received the 2014-15 Prince Charitable Trust Rome Prize in Landscape Architecture\, was a 2017 resident at the Headlands Center for the Arts\, and is the 2025-26 Fuller Fieldscape Fellow. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Firefighter Health: Examining the links between occupational exposure and cancer
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Goodrich's research interests combine toxicology\, epidemiology and epigenomics with the goal of identifying environmental exposures and their mechanisms that contribute to disease susceptibility at various life-stages (in utero\, early childhood\, and adulthood). Epigenetic modification by environmental factors is one mechanism that can link exposures to toxicity and disease outcomes. Dr. Goodrich is assessing the impact of exposures from the workplace (e.g. firefighting) or the broader environment (e.g.\, lead\, phthalates\, PFAS) on epigenetic modifications (DNA methylation) in epidemiological cohorts from around the globe using both candidate gene and epigenome-wide approaches. She integrates data on exposures\, DNA methylation\, and health outcomes to better understand disease risk from exposures at vulnerable life-stages. Dr. Goodrich is a co-Leader of the DoGoodS-Pi environmental epigenetics laboratory. She is also co-Leader of the Pan Omics and Data Sciences Core of the Michigan Lifestage Environmental Exposures and Disease (M-LEEaD) Center.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Maximizing the Interaction Strength
DESCRIPTION:QCD remains intractable in the high-energy soft regime\, where all standard methods break down. This regime governs total hadronic cross-sections\, which have long been observed to grow with energy\, a phenomenon that is still very poorly understood today. In this talk\, I will argue that the modern S-matrix bootstrap provides a systematic way to tackle this regime of QCD. I will derive an upper bound on the total cross-section at finite energy and present the strongest interacting amplitude that the bootstrap outputs. I will compare these results with proton–proton experimental data.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Strong Terahertz electrodynamics in emergent 2D materials
DESCRIPTION:Terahertz (THz) sensing and imaging are critical in both quantum information technology and biomedical sensing because THz frequencies (0.1-10 THz) resonate with key low-energy information carriers (e.g.\, coherent phonons and magnons) in quantum materials and molecular vibrations in biological matter (e.g.\, skin tumor tissues and blood cells). In addition\, materials with THz response are essential building blocks for the next generation telecommunication technology. However\, the widespread use of THz technology has long been hindered by a lack of materials with strong THz light-matter interactions for high-performance devices.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present our recent advances in two-dimensional (2D) quantum materials to overcome these limitations by leveraging their unique topological properties and exploiting the resulting strong light-matter interactions. One remarkable example is the recently discovered nonlinear Hall effect (NHE) in 2D topological semimetals\, mediated by their diverging quantum geometrical properties [1-3]. In the first part of the talk\, I will report how we use this new notion to demonstrate the long-sought THz sensing metrics [4]. Specifically\, we have experimentally studied the unique interplay among the quantum geometrical properties\, gate-tunable electron correlation and THz electrodynamics in atomically thin topological semimetals TaIrTe 4 . Building upon the nonlinear Hall effect as a new mechanism for THz rectification\, we have observed a large zero-bias responsivity (~ 0.3 A/W)\, ultralow NEP (~pW/Hz 1/2 )\, broadband THz response (0.1 to 10 THz) and ultrafast intrinsic speed (~ ps) at room temperature. The device performance can be further enhanced by introducing gate-tunable electron correlations. Thanks to the new topological physics and strong electron correlation\, the demonstrated device metrics show tremendous advantages over the attainable THz detectors based on other 2D materials and conventional technology. Beyond light probing\, the rich interplay physics in this platform also allows using light to induce more exotic order. If time permits\, I may present our ongoing efforts along this way.\n\nDetecting terahertz waves is only one half of the equation\, in the second half of the talk\, I will introduce our report of colossal THz emission from a van der Waals (vdW) ferroelectric semiconductor NbOI 2 [5]. Using THz emission spectroscopy\, we observe a THz generation efficiency that is an order of magnitude higher than that of ZnTe. We uncover the underlying generation mechanisms tied to its substantial ferroelectric polarization by investigating the dependence of THz emission on excitation wavelength\, incident polarization and fluence. Leveraging the long-lived coherent ferron-mediated THz emission\, we further demonstrate the ultrafast coherent amplification and annihilation of the THz emission and associated coherent ferron oscillations by using an ultrafast double-pump scheme.\n\nReferences:\n\n[1] Q. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning seminar in algebraic combinatorics: Torsion classes realize the Tamari lattice in type A
DESCRIPTION:The protagonist of this talk will be the oriented quiver of Dynkin type A. We will introduce its (finitely many) indecomposable representations\, use them to classify all quotient-closed subcategories of rep A_n\, and discover which among these constitute torsion classes via \"bracket vectors\". The torsion classes ordered by inclusion recover the Tamari lattice\, a beloved combinatorial lattice encoding a variety of known objects. This talk follows the paper \"The Tamari lattice as it arises in quiver representations\" by Hugh Thomas.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CANCELLED - Department Colloquium | Is there Another Earth?
DESCRIPTION:Most stars in our galaxy have one or more planets orbiting them. Their diversity is astounding\, with observed bulk densities ranging over a factor of 100. Yet there is only one planet that is confirmed to sustain life as we know it: our own. Current searches for life on planets around other stars planned with next generation ground- and space-based telescopes seek identical twins of Earth. How likely is it that we will find one and detect unambiguous signs of life around it? Perhaps the only thing harder than proving a planet hosts life is proving that it doesn’t. We are beginning to understand which aspects of the Solar System make Earth a suitable place for the biochemical origins of life\, as well as assessing how common such systems are. With new instruments such as the CGI on NASA’s Roman Space Telescope (launching this year)\, as well as METIS on the European Southern Observatories 39-meter ELT (with first light planned for 2029)\, we can detect small planets in both reflected light as well as thermal emission around stars like the Sun. This enables resolution of the radius-albedo ambiguity\, determination of its energy budget\, and the search for an active greenhouse effect\, with the possibility of identifying the responsible molecules in the spectra of its atmosphere. Doing this for even a small sample of systems will yield fundamental insights into these diverse atmospheres\, confronting our theories of planet formation and evolution. These could be necessary steps to understanding potential biosignatures in these atmospheres and ultimately help answer the question “Are we alone?”.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Resonance Chains for Hyperbolic Surfaces with Large Funnels via Dynamical Zeta Functions
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will quantitatively relate the resonance sets of certain hyperbolic surfaces to the resonance sets of certain metric graphs via the spine graph construction. Resonance sets of metric graphs are known to contain structures known as ‘resonance chains’\, and so as a corollary I will show the existence of approximate resonance chains in resonance sets of these surfaces as specific geometric parameters become large. In the language of zeta functions\, these results can be restated in terms of the Selberg zeta functions of these surfaces degenerating to polynomials under an asymptotic limit.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brewing a Revolution: How Coffee Transformed the Early United States
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 11\, 2026\n\nCoffee is among the most common goods traded and consumed worldwide\, and so omnipresent its popularity is often taken for granted. But even everyday habits have a history. When and why coffee became part of North American daily life is at the center of the recently published book\, Coffee Nation: How One Commodity Transformed the Early United States\, by Michelle Craig McDonald. Using a wide range of archival\, quantitative\, and material evidence\, McDonald follows coffee from the slavery-based plantations of the Caribbean and South America\, through the balance sheets of Atlantic world merchants\, into the coffeehouses\, stores\, and homes of colonial North Americans\, and ultimately to the growing import/export businesses of the early nineteenth-century United States that rebranded this exotic good as an American staple. The result is a sweeping history that explores how coffee shaped the lives of enslaved laborers and farmers\, merchants and retailers\, consumers and advertisers.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: Error Recovery in Shannon-Whittaker Sampling
DESCRIPTION:The Shannon-Whittaker sampling theorem provides an exact digitization of an analog signal (a scalar function of a single variable). It is not immediately obvious that this digitization is robust against error in the sampled signal values. We will present an algorithm which shows that for certain types of sample error\, the Shannon-Whittaker sampling formula can be modified to recover a signal exactly even in the presence of error. We will also present several extensions of the Shannon-Whittaker sampling formula which make error recovery more stable in practice. Along the way\, we will also discuss aspects of frame theory\, which extend the idea of a basis for a vector space. Frames allow for information redundancy\, making them much more robust against noise than an ordinary basis.

SUMMARY:Performance:Chance Huiet\, tuba
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join the Tuba & Euphonium Studio for a recital by guest artist Chance Huiet. He will be joined by collaborative pianist Zhihua Tang\, an associate professor in collaborative piano at the Michigan State University College of Music.\n\nGUEST BIO\n\nCHANCE HUIET is currently the Assistant Professor of Euphonium and Tuba at Michigan State University. Prior to his appointment\, Chance was the replacement Principal Tuba with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra for several seasons. He also held the Principal Tuba position with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic from 2016-2024. Chance has performed with the orchestras of Cleveland\, Melbourne (Australia)\, Utah\, Detroit\, Kansas City\, Iceland\, and Malaysia\, and Kalamazoo\, Michigan based New Orleans-style group\, the Kanola Band.\n\nAs a soloist\, Chance has performed recitals around the country including a guest artist recital at the 2018 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference held at the University of Iowa. Chance performed the John Williams Tuba Concerto on a subscription series with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic in February 2022\, his first solo appearance with the orchestra. In March 2019\, he had the privilege of premiering Viet Cuong’s Concerto for Tuba and Wind Ensemble with the Purdue Fort Wayne Wind Ensemble.\n\nIn the last few years\, Chance has been interested in learning about birds and loves exploring the native birds in places he gets to travel. Most recently\, he saw the critically-endangered Helmeted Honeyeater in Healesville\, Australia. In the 1980s\, its population had dropped to fewer than 60 breeding pairs in the wild\, but is slowly growing due to diligent work at sanctuaries like in Healesville. Though not explicitly bird related\, he recorded and self-produced an album of original folk songs released in January 2021 called\, “For the Birds.” The album is on Spotify and all listening sources.\n\nHis primary teachers\, who deserve much gratitude\, include Orcenith Smith\, Jacob Cameron\, and Philip Sinder.

QMSS Community Hours are a supplement to traditional office hours during which students can come to chat with QMSS Peer Mentors\, make friends in the QMSS program\, and work independently or in groups on problem sets\, projects\, and/or exam studying.\n\nDuring Community Hours\, 1-2 GSIs from each QMSS 201 and QMSS 301 course will be present for at least 1 hour for potential student questions\, and there will be plenty of open space to work on your own or with friends without a GSI if that's what you prefer. QMSS Peer Mentors will always be present for the entire event to chat about navigating the QMSS minor\, finding\, applying for\, and getting offers for summer internships that utilize QMSS skills\, life as a student at the University of Michigan\, or anything else they've been thinking about lately and seeking additional support or resources for!\n\nOpen to all students! Light snacks will be provided & soft coffee house-style background music will be played during the events.\n\nThe image alt-text of the Winter 2026 QMSS Community Hours schedule is as follows:\n- Wednesday\, January 14 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Tuesday\, January 20 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Wednesday\, January 28 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Tuesday\, February 3 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Wednesday\, February 11 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Tuesday\, February 17 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Wednesday\, February 25 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Tuesday\, March 10 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Wednesday\, March 18 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Tuesday\, March 24 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Wednesday\, April 1 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Tuesday\, April 7 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Wednesday\, April 15 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm\n- Tuesday\, April 21 | QMSS 201 GSIs: 6-8pm | QMSS 301 GSIs: 6-8pm

SUMMARY:Performance:Dave Simonett
DESCRIPTION:New solo music from the Trampled By Turtles lead singer and songwriter\n\nDave Simonett has spent almost two decades as the lead singer\, guitar player and songwriter for the widely popular and beloved roots band\, Tramped By Turtles. He also fronts Dead Man Winter\, a bull-bodied\, emotionally resonant brand of Americana-infused indie rock band. He now boldly steps forward with a shining collection of new solo material for the first time under his own name called Red Tail. While Dead Man Winter's Furnace was a much-needed cathartic experience for Simonett during a dark time\, he is not connecting these songs on Red Tail to his own life as he prefers to allow listeners to develop their own interpretations. The conversational and poetic style in which Simonett writes lends itself to this perfectly\, inspired by the spacious and stark Northern woods of Minnesota\, where he's from. Drawing from the outdoors\, Simonett uses light\, weather and imagery to paint introspective\, cinematic scenes that are easy to lose yourself in.
